THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

Helical piles and ground anchors were used to meet critical design and constructability requirements for an urban forest Canopy Walk at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta, GA. The 12-foot wide pedestrian walkway path was to be nestled among the treetops of a forest, extending to 600 ft. in length, and soaring 40 ft. high above the forest floor. Of particular concern during construction was that the foundation system for the temporary steel shoring system had to be non-invasive to the subsoil, could not damage the forest floor, trees, root systems, or foliage, and upon completion of the concrete walkway pour, could be removed, again without disturbing the subsoil. Accubrace, Inc. designed and installed all the helical foundation types, as well as provided steel braces, typically used in Tilt-Up building construction, for the walkway project. The braces, some extending to 43 ft. in length, were used to provide lateral support against wind loads for the walkway form. In addition, the braces acted as secondary support for lateral loads during the placement of wet concrete along the 600 ft. length of the walkway. Helical foundation products installed included vertical compression piles, ground anchors for tension rods, and ground anchors for the braces. The installation of the piles and anchors was particularly challenging since the forest floor elevation varied as much as 50 ft. due to the presence of a ravine. Information is provided on the subsoil conditions, required loads, design, installation, and acceptance criteria for each helical product type installed for the project. The results of vertical and lateral load tests on the helical piles in the pre-construction phase, conducted in conformance to project specifications are presented. Photographs to illustrate the nature and complexity of the project are included. The concrete pour for the walkway was successfully completed on December 12, 2009, and the walkway was opened for visitors in May, 2010.

A study has been made to determine the sites at which sulfur adsorption occurs on copper surfaces. measurements were made of the relative torques, Ys, at the intersection of twin boundaries with surfaces near the three low-index orientations, i.e., (100), @lo), and 011), over a range of H2S/H2 ratios. HZS concerztvations j'ro~n 3 to 1500pp)n between 830" and 1050°C were used. It is concluded that sulfur adsorption occurved preferentially though not exclusively at edge sites near the (100) and (110) surfaces in the HzS range — 700 Ppm giving rise to negative torques near these orientations. Beyond this HzS range, adsorption occurred at all sites. Near the (111) surface, 7/y little with HzS concentration up to approxiwzately 75pptn. Above this range, the results indicate adsorption is occurring OH both terrace and edge sites. SCIENTIFIC interest in surfaces and their interactions with a gaseous environment dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The scientific luminaries of that period—Faraday, Maxwell, Rayleigh, Dewar, and Gibbs—were already concerned about such processes. However, it has only been within the past several decades that adsorption on metal surfaces has been actively studied. This increased interest in adsorption has been brought about by the advent of new and improved experimental techniques and apparatus, e.g., ultrahigh vacuum, and field-emission and ion microscopes. However, most of the work done using these techniques has been carried out at low temperatures. When adsorption studies have been made at either low or high temperatures, they usually gave no indication of the particular surface orientations or type of sites on which adsorption was occurring. In the last few years, there have been a series of studies in which the surface tension, y,, and/or its derivative with respect to orientation, 7, have been studied as a function of orientation and atmosphere.'-7 Nearly all of the work on the relative torque,* ~/y, silver annealed in hydrogen and air.6 Recently Winterbottom and Gjostein" have used a modified and more accurate Mykurian method to determine the y plot of gold in hydrogen The only work in which T/~, has been measured over a range of chemical potentials for a given solute, p2, is that of Robertson and shewmon7 on the Cu-0 system. They measured T/Y, vs Po, (10"" to 10- l3 atm) at 1000°C in various mixtures of Hz0 and HZ. From this work they estimated the value of p2 at which one half of the surface sites are occupied with oxygen, pg, as being in the range 10- l6 to 10- l5 atm of oxygen. They also found that increasing Pa increased the magnitude of ~/y, near the (111) and (100) orientations. This indicates that oxygen is not adsorbed preferentially at step edges, but uniformly over all surface sites. In addition, they did one experiment on sulfur adsorption on copper surfaces, which indicated that sulfur adsorption decreases ~/y, near the (100) orientation, while not affecting ~/y, near the (111). This could be interpreted as indicating that sulfur adsorbs preferentially at step edges near the (100). In this paper the primary objective of the work has been to carry out a study of sulfur adsorption on copper surfaces over a range of temperatures and p,. In conjunction with this work, thermal grooving at grain boundaries has been examined as a method of determining the effect of sulfur adsorption on y,. METHODS Ideally, one would like to have information on the quantity of solute adsorbed on a surface and the types of sites at which it is absorbed as a function of p2. The total quantity adsorbed or the surface excess is given by the thermodynamic equation Thus data on the variation of y, with pz indicates the value of p2 at which adsorption becomes appreciable and the quantity adsorbed. The type of adsorption site is more difficult to deduce but information on this can be obtained from the variation of rz with 8, the angular deviation of the surface orientation. This is obtained from the thermodynamic equationlg Data on t and ys as functions of p2 have been obtained by the following methods. 1) Twin Boundary Grooving—By determining the effect of adsorption on the torque, 7, where T is the variation of surface energy, y,, with orientation, it is possible to obtain some indication as to the preferred sites of adsorption. Experimentally, the torque value measured is the relative torque, 7/ys The twin boundary grooving technique suggested by Mykura'' was used in this study to determine near the three low-index orientations— (loo), (110), and (111). "The creep properties of tin-based lead-free solders Sn3.0AgO.5Cu and SnO.7CuO.1Ni and lead solders 10Sn90Pb and 50Sn50Pb were investigated at temperatures between 298 K and 398 K. The creep-rupture time decreases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The analysis of the solder creep curves uses the Omega method. The creep rate E is expressed by following formula: 1n ? = 1n ?0 + O?, where ?0 and O are experimentally determined. The parameter Eo increases with increasing initial stress and temperature. The activation energy for ?0 is 108 kJ/mol for Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu and 85 kJ/mol for SnO.7CuO.INi. These energies suggest that the lattice diffusion of tin is dominant. The energy of 1OSn90Pb is 37 kJ/mol and that of 50Sn50Pb is 67 kJ/mol. The creep-rupture time is calculated using the parameters, ?0 and O. The calculated creep-rupture time is in good agreement with the measured creep-rupture time.IntroductionLead-free solders are replacing traditional tin-lead solders as part of a major trend toward protecting the earth's environment. However, tin-lead solders are currently needed for a high temperature range. Since creep is the main deformation mechanism in solder joints, understanding a constitutive model for creep and examining creep data for solders are important for reliability analysis of solder joints. A steady-state creep equation is generally used for solders [1,2], and it supposes that the secondary-, or minimum-, creep rate occupies the entire creep life. However, secondary creep accounts for only about 15 % to 40 % of the entire creep life for solders. Thus, the equation may not represent the entire creep life."

This final report summarizes the prototype development and testing of an air curtain respirotory protective device under Bureau of Mines Contract HO122087. The air curtain respiratory protective device, as part of a miner?s hat, provides protection for the underground mining machine operator against inhalation of dangerous amounts of respirable coal dust. Major components of the air curtain respiratory protective device are: 1) a modified miner hat incorporating an air curtain jet manifold from which the protective air curtain emanates, 2) a motor blower which supplies the air for the air curtain, 3) a filter element to remove the particulate material from the air used for the air curtain, and 4) the hoses and coupling used to duct the filtered air from the motor blower to the modified miner's hat.

Published X-ray mass absorption coefficients were compiled and tabulated. These coefficients are required for various X-ray analytical techniques. Values obtained from 28 authors are listed for 87 elements with both experimental and calculated points included; the wavelengths range from ~0.01 to 68 A. Representative graphs are presented for six elements (lithium, nitrogen, iron, silver, holmium, and uranium. A 37-item supplementary bibliography is also included.

The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

The extra information brought by further drilling may seem necessary to achieve control over block grades if elementary estimation techniques are used. However a geostatistical study of an Australian deposit shows that better estimation techniques at the end of the first drilling campaign are sufficient to achieve required control.Subsequent drilling would be essentially wasteful.

This report describes a project in which three structured underground coal mine equipment operator training programs were developed. The project was carried out in two parts. In the first part, a research study was conducted to determine how on-the-job training is currently conducted in industry, and to determine the overall effectiveness of current on-the-job training. In addition, the possible application of the principles of social learning theory to on-the-job training was investigated. In the second part three prototypes on-the-job training programs were developed for shuttle car operation, roof bolter operation, and continuous miner operation. These programs were carefully structured to eliminate the shortcomings of current industrial on-the-job training identified in the research study and incorporated the application of relevant principles of social learning theory. The programs are prototypes which underground coal mine training personnel can use as models to develop their own customized equipment operator training programs.

Anatolia Minerals Development Limited (AMDL) is constructing the Çöpler Gold Project in eastern Turkey and commenced mining in the fourth quarter of 2009 with gold production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The project is a 15,500 tonnes/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life approximately 40 million tones of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 tonnes of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the mine life. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

A numerical modelling approach was developed to explicitly simulate geomechanical characteristics of intact rock: mineralogy, grain size and fabric. The approach involved creating a representative constitutive model for each of three common rock-forming minerals: mica, quartz and feldspar. The constitutive models developed are valid within the low confinement realm of excavation boundaries, where tensile fracture processes dominate. The mineral types were assigned to numerical elements, which were associated with each other through an algorithm created in a finite difference model, FLAC 2D (Itasca 2007a), to simulate real crystal geometries and orientations. The numerical models were used in a parametric investigation of the geomechanical characteristics and compared with published observations of the rock yielding process in laboratory testing. This approach has allowed the explicit grain-scale investigation of the impact of geomechanical characteristics on rock yielding at low confinement, leading to an improved mechanistic understanding of excavation-scale rock yielding processes at excavation boundaries.

"Efficient use of land is constantly requiring more underground construction. Minimized execution time and disturbance to surroundings and nearby structures are essential benefits for all construction techniques. To meet the demands of a modern construction project, suppliers have to be able to provide high-quality and tailor-made products just on time. RD pile wall is a retaining wall based on drilled steel pipe piles which are connected to each other with special interlocking profiles. RD pile wall is a solution which enables penetration of overburden soil, dense fill layers including stones and boulders, and embedding into the bedrock in one single operation. Several test installations and laboratory tests have been made to develop the system and to test and improve the water tightness of the wall. Beside these tests, RD pile wall has also proven its reliability in almost 70 projects. Largest project so far has been Pasila Tripla project in Helsinki, Finland. A permanent retaining wall with surface area of 18,000 m2 (193,750 ft2), excavation depth of 21 m (68 ft) and over 17 m (56 ft) of water pressure was made with 711 mm (28”) and 406.4 mm (16”) pile sizes. Piles were delivered to site in one piece with lengths up to 33.5 m (110 ft).INTRODUCTIONExcavations in cramped city centers and in between of existing buildings and other structures are facing more and more challenges. Installation of sheet pile walls is often problematic or even impossible due to obstacles in ground from old structures and due to demand to extend the excavations to even deeper and harder soil layers. Also installations of secant pile walls are facing difficulties due to cramped construction sites and constantly tightening execution times.On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid- 1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall, was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers).PRINCIPLE AND MAIN BENEFITS OF THE METHODRD pile walls can be used in all soil conditions. Most beneficial the system is in extremely demanding soil conditions where the installation of traditional retaining walls is challenging or even impossible. The RD pile wall is a combination of drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections as shown in Fig. 1.Individual RD piles are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole (DTH) hammer using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings shown in Fig. 2."

This report presents the results of studies of Kennecott Copper Corporation's tailings embankment at Magna, Utah. The stability studies described were performed on only one cross section of the embankment, utilizing; data obtained from drilling, sampling, and testing, which was limited in nature. The main objective of the data collection was to provide background information to support the overall research effort. Because of this limited scope, it is not possible to evaluate the degree of safety or adequacy of the embankment or disposal system, and the information and data contained in the body of this report must be judged in that light. The first part of this report contains discussion of site geology and seismicity, pertinent information on the refuge disposal system, a discussion of the tailings materials characteristics, a summary of the engineering analyses, and A bibliography. The second tart (appendices) contains basic geologic and engineering data supporting the discussions in the first part of the report.

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. "Abstract - Camelback is a small (=200 000 tonnes), moderate grade (5%-7% Zn+Pb), volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, which occurs within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The host rocks are tuffaceous sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member) that overlie quartz-feldspar porphyritic tufflavas (Grand Falls member). The hanging-wall sequence comprises rhyolite of the Flat Landing Brook Formation, overlain by the Forty Mile Brook tholeiitic basalt. A dike of unaltered andesite was intersected beneath the massive sulfides, but was not found in the hanging-wall sequence in the vicinity of the deposit. The stratiform part of the deposit is made up of two, steeply south dipping, subparallel massive lenses that average approximately 4 m in thickness. Each lens is zoned, with an upper part consisting mainly of a pyrite and a basal part containing pyrite, sphalerite, and galena, with Ag values. The Au content in the massive sulfides is low (average = 52 ppb for 271 samples), but tends to be enriched in the massive pyrite near the top of each lens. Oxide facies iron formation is spatially associated with the massive sulfides, and has been traced up to 1800 m along strike. Footwall hydrothermal alteration is typical of VMS systems, and is characterized by depletion in K2O and Na2O, and enrichment in MgO and Fe2O3T with proximity to massive sulfides. The massive lenses are underlain by intensely chloritic, fine-grained, tuffaceous sedimentary rocks containing locally significant sulfide (chalcopyrite > pyrite > pyrrhotite) veins, which are interpreted to represent feeder zone mineralization. Unlike many VMS deposits, there is no evidence of silicification beneath the massive sulfides at the top of the feeder zone. The oxygen isotopic compositions (d18O = -1.5‰ to -0.3‰) of hydrothermal chlorite coupled with sulfur isotopic compositions (d34S ˜ 12‰) of the massive sulfides suggest that seawater was the dominant fluid in the hydrothermal system. Normalized rare earth element diagrams show flat Ce profiles and positive Eu anomalies, indicating that modified seawater was involved in ore formation; i.e., high-temperature (=350ºC), acidic, and reduced prior to entrainment into the hydrothermal cell. Although, seawater was the dominant fluid in the sulfide-forming system, d34S values of stringer zone sulfides (8.5‰) coupled with elevated Sn (400 ppm) in one massive sulfide sample indicate that there was at least some magmatic component in the hydrothermal cell."

Hydrometallurgical operations and many processes in the chemical industry require the separation of dissolved material from solids. One of the decisions which has to be made in designing a plant for such an operation is how this separation shall be accomplished. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth the general principles involved in such separations in order that the optimum flowsheet and equipment may be selected. Countercurrent Decantation with thickeners, or C.C.D. as it is generally known, is, of course, only one way of separating dissolved material from undis-solved. Other unit operations such as Countercurrent Filtration (C.C.F.) and Countercurrent Classification (C.C.C.) are widely used. The same principles may also be applied to centrifugally assisted decantation, as with nozzle or solid bowl type centrifugals, and to separations using screens, either gravity or centrifugal type. Another form of countercurrent washing applicable to granular materials is practiced in continuous ion exchange operations. All of these operations depend on two basic principles, or combinations of these principles. In C.C.D. type operations the solids are concentrated into the smallest possible volume of liquor in each step and the resulting pulp then mixed with a more dilute liquor and recon cen trated, the liquors separated from the more dilute stages being advanced to dilute the more concentrated liquor in a previous solids concentrate, as is shown in Fig. I. This will be termed the solids concentration-solution dilution principle, or, for short, solution dilution. countercurrent decantation- type circuits. The second principle used in washing solubles from solids is that of solids concentration-solution displacement. Here the solids are restrained from movement while wash solution is forced through the interstices in a counter-current fashion, as in Fig. 2. In the simplest application of this principle, once the "cake" has been formed, it is not disturbed until the operation is completed. In continuous filters, the cake is merely moved under the successive washes and the displaced filtrates removed as in Fig. 4. Often, however, after one or two displacement washes, a repulping step is introduced, the cake reformed and washed again. This procedure brings the solution dilution principle into play as well as the solution displacement principle. "Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo.
