Current-voltage relationships for air at high temperature in negative corona are compared with relationships predicted by theory. Deviations are discussed. Eased on the latest theoretical concept of electron detachment from negative ions and recent findings in basic research on free electron gases, results of applied research show the existence of free electrons in air at high temperature and high field strength-to-pressure ratios.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

Reliable fire detection is essential for both safe evacuation and containment or extinguishment. In order to increase reliability by reducing the number of nuisance fire alarms in underground mines that use diesel-powered equipment, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a diesel-discriminating fire detector (DDD). It was designed to discriminate between smoke produced by a fire and the smoke-laden exhaust of a diesel engine. Experiments were conducted by the Bureau to compare the smoke detection capabilities of the DDD with those of conventional fire detectors in response to smoldering coal and conveyor belting. A comparison was made among the alarm times of a carbon monoxide (CO) detector with an alarm threshold of 5 ppm, a smoke detector with an optical density alarm threshold of 0.044 of', and the DDD with an alarm threshold of 0.025 V. The results show that the DDD will reliably detect developing coal and conveyor belt fires. The average time delay separating the DDD alarm from the first detector to alarm was 76 s for smoldering conveyor belt and 65 s for smoldering coal. The longest time delay between the response of the DDD and the first detector to alarm was approximately 120 s.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

The operation of intelligent coal mining in complex geological environment is still unable to realize automation. In order to realize the autonomous cutting of fully mechanized mining equipment and improve coal production, a mining and transportation equipment dynamic advancement path planning method based on spatial kinematics coordinate deduction prediction and real-time correction prediction of coal-rock state identification of equipment cutting current index are proposed. Firstly, the spatial motion law of the mining and transportation equipment is analyzed, and the mathematical model of the spatial motion of the mining and transportation equipment is established. The relationship between the adjustment of the shearer rocker arm and the pose change of the scraper conveyor is determined, and the coordinate deduction model of the spatial advancement position of the equipment is determined, which provides a theoretical basis for the advancement path planning of the mining and transportation equipment. Then, on the basis of the mathematical model construction, combined with real geological data and equipment information, the three-dimensional dynamic planning of the advancement path of the mining and transportation equipment is carried out from the two dimensions of the horizontal advancement direction and the shearer walking direction. At the same time, the relationship between the cutting current index of shearer and the state recognition of coal-rock mass is analyzed, and the coal-rock mass state identification of cutting current and the adjustment of rocker arm model is constructed, and the real-time dynamic correction of three-dimensional path is carried out, so that the planned path can better adapt to the sudden change of real geological environment. Then, using the unity3d virtual reality technology, a simulation system for the horizontal advancement path planning of the virtual mining and transportation equipment is constructed, which simulates the real advancement operation process of the mining and transportation equipment and conducts advancement training. Finally, the dynamic advancement scheme update prediction based on the existing actual cutting but ahead of the actual cutting is realized in the virtual scene, and the optimal scheme is transmitted into the existing prediction cutting system to guide the actual physical equipment mining. The path planning method can control the coordinate position error of the advancing cutting path within 15 mm, which provides ideas for the research on the advancing path planning of fully mechanized equipment.

This paper is in three parts. Part I discusses the various types of cement clinker coolers now in full-scale operation. Part II is a detailed study of the criteria for selection of the type of cement clinker cooler best suited for a given installation. Part III covers a number of cooling problems and their solutions in some of the metals industries. The large and world-wide problem of cement clinker cooling has motivated much study and development and the coverage here of this work is somewhat detailed. In contrast the cooling problems of the metals industries are quite varied between industries and often quite different from plant to plant in the same industry because of basic differences in the requirements of the particular material being processed. Therefore the coverage of metals industries coolers is somewhat more general. It is believed that all of the technology covered here may be of interest to those working with the problems of cooling hot materials.

"IntroductionWestar Mining Ltd. is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal for the export market. It currently operates two mines, the Balmer Mine at Sparwood, British Columbia producing 6 000 000 tonnes per year and the Greenhills operation at Elkford, producing 2 100000 tonnes per year. Approximately 1600 people are employed between the two mines which operate independently but share common administrative services.Like most mining companies in Canada over the past three or four years, Westar has faced rising production costs along with flat or declining prices and demand for its products. In order to survive under these conditions it has become necessary to strive for decreased costs in any way possible. Over the past two years there has been a widespread introduction of microcomputers across the company. In order to satisfy increasing demand for accurate and pertinent information while at the same time increasing productivity, the microcomputer has become an invaluable tool.This paper describes some of the problems faced by a mine maintenance department in this operating climate and how they were solved with the help of a microcomputer. It also describes some of the problems that may be encountered both with equipment and people and recommends some ways that these might be minimized or avoided. Finally, an assessment of whether or not the move to microcomputers was a current and economical one, and a brief description of future plans and projects is given.The Maintenance OrganizationIn order to appreciate fully the role that microcomputers are playing within the Maintenance Department at Westar Mining, a little background on the organization and operating philosophies is in order. Most of the comments apply directly to the Balmer operations, however, the Greenhills operation is similar in concept.The mine maintenance organization operates on a fleet based concept with these departments reporting to the maintenance superintendent: haulage trucks, shovels and drills, loaders and Caterpillar equipment, maintenance services, and rebuild services.Each of these departments is headed by an assistant superintendent and is responsible for all maintenance on the equipment on the respective fleet. Shift foreman, planners, specialists and clerical staff are assigned to each fleet. A central engineering and administrative group consisting of one engineer and three clerical positions is responsible for maintenance engineering and centralized administrative services"

Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. It highlights how the best short-term ventilation infrastructure upgrades can be selected when considered in isolation but highlights that long-term production planning can have an effect on the decisions made in the short-term.CITATION:van den Berg, L, Podreka, M and Merry, P, 2013. The investigation of the nickel - gadolinium phase diagram was undertaken to determine the alloying behavior of these two metals . The data from meltingpoint determinations , thermal analyses , metallographic examinations , and X- ray diffraction analyses revealed a phase diagram with three eutectic points and seven intermetallic compounds . Very limited solubility of the phases in each other was observed . The five phases , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , Ni Gd , Ni, Gd , and NiGd¸ , melted incongruently at about 1,300 ° , 1,270 ° , 1,180 ° , 1,070 ° , and 775 ° C , respectively . Ni Gd and NiGd melted congruently at approximately 1,550 ° and 980 ° C , respectively . Four of the compounds were determined to crystallize in the hexagonal system : Ni Gd , Ni Gd , Ni , Gd , and Ni Gd . Ni Gd was determined to be cubic and NiGd , orthorhombic . The crystal system of NiGd was not determined . The eutectic points occurred at 13 , 67 , and 85 wt pct gadolinium , and the isotherms at 1,290 ° , 890 ° , and 700 ° C , respectively .

In an investigation of the microstructure of shock-loaded metal specimens1 C. S. Smith found that there was little distortion of grain boundaries or change in external dimensions, although the hardness corresponded to that produced by severe rolling. Furthermore, the hardness of individual grains was independent of the deformation structures present; grains with no markings were as hard as those heavily populated with markings. These markings which resemble twins do not appear in copper until high shock-loads of the order of 200 kb are applied. It appears that due to the high velocity of a shock wave and its sharp front, heavy deformation takes place on a submicroscopic scale. In this work an attempt was made to examine this deformation, particularly at a load below which macroecopic markings appear. The broadening of 200 and 400 diffraction peaks was examined from the face of a poly crystalline sample normal to the direction of the shock wave. These peaks were chosen because the elastic constants in copper are such that residual strains would be greatest in the <100> directions; hence, the strain-broadening contribution to these peaks would be large in comparison to other sets. Also the broadening due to stacking faults and microtwins would be greatest with this set.2 A complete Fourier analysis of these peaks was made, as described by warren,&apos; using the Stokes correction with peaks from an annealed sample.3 With the aid of the U. S. Army Ordnance Corps EDVAC computer and a curve matching program, sixty sine and sixty cosine coefficients were obtained for each peak. The last of these was about 1.5 pct or less of the largest coefficient, indicating good representation. Transverse sections from a 1.5 in. rod of as-drawn electrolytic tough-pitch copper were reduced in cross-sectional area about 50 pct by cross rolling. Disks 1.5 in. in diam were recrystallized at 275 °C for 30 min and then at 300°C for the same time. The faces were polished and deeply etched in nitric acid to remove 25 mils. The grain size was 0.02 mm. Laue back-reflection patterns indicated the sample was well recrystallized. The two diffraction peaks from this sample were recorded on a Norelco diffractometer using filtered copper radiation. Peak intensities were kept less than 600 cps to assure linearity of the counter and circuitry. This sample was then placed between two rods of the same material and diameter. Geophysical borehole logging is a valuable and inexpensive tool for coal deposit evaluation, development, and production. In addition to the usual determinations of depth and seam thickness, geophysical borehole logs can effectively and accurately determine the coal ash, moisture, and heat contents in situ. Location and evaluation of the partings can be done quickly and accurately. Overburden character determination, such as roof competence, dewatering parameters, ripability, trace element content of the coal and overburden, and sulfur content can be done with existing tools and techniques. The quality of such determinations depends upon the quality of planning and calibration.

THE UTILIZATION by the Bureau of Mines of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in connection with coal research has led to some basic improvements in methods, including a calibration method, a quantitative assessment of infrared spectral energy sources, and the development and perfection of infrared filters and cells. The adoption of a micropipet method to flush organic samples into absorption cells permits the investigation of vapors from organic liquids and the identification of volatile organic compounds. The spectral method has been used to investigate the infrared spectra of metal chelates, the charge-transfer complexing properties of aniline and nitrobenzene, an infrared method for determining the presence of methane in coal-mine air that has been adopted for use in enforcing the regulations of the National Coal Mine Safety Act, and atmospheric pollution including smog and odor-causing oxidation and decomposition of organic materials. Correlation of spectra and structure of organic compounds, particularly aromatics, was studied.

"Abstract -The Orostar and Scadding were two small gold mines owned and operated by Orofino Resources Limited. Conventional statistical treatment indicates an identical arithmetic mean grade of 0.22 oz/T Au for both mineable reserves. Further, the deposits are both shown to have cut weighted average reserve grade of 0.21 oz/T. Orostar mined out at 0.206 oz/T and Scadding at0.156 oz/TAu . The combined exploration and development database contained 1394 fire assays, more than enough for statistical confidence in a normal distribution. Therefore this study was initiated to determine, if possible, why the mill head grades were lower than the averages and to experiment with several methods to determine whether a reliable statistical mill head grade estimation method would emerge. Despite the identical reserve grades, distinct differences in the grade distribution histograms are present. By studying the arithmetic and log-normal grade distribution s, with some attention to South African practices, this paper reports on those differences which may account for the considerable divergence in the mill head grades. Furthermore, this study casts considerable doubt on the industry standard method of cut weighted averages.The global mill head grades of the two deposits have been derived from the arithmetic average grades by graphic means. This precise method of mill head grade prediction, if applied to complex orebodies, could permit selective grade control and result in direct cost savings by allowing the operator to detect false value stopes, benches or levels and emphasize reliable regions of not only gold mines, but also uranium or base metal deposits."

A comprehensive flotation study has been conducted on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The results are compared with those for a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4% to 5% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity than the concentrate produced by up to six stages using a conventional mechanical cell. The results also show that the packed-column flotation process is particularly suitable for the recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

"There&apos;s no such thing as quality assurance; only quality control ... by inspection. "(1) A common misunderstanding in the procurement and construction of custom designed, fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems is that quality assurance can be achieved by simply referencing codes, standards, ISO 9002, QMS or other such programs in the contract documents. In the authors&apos; experience, nothing could be further from the truth, not detrimental to the performance of the equipment than the exclusion of inspection activities and reliance upon warranties and "fit-for-purpose" clauses. Likewise, the expectation that fabricators, suppliers, or third party inspectors can provide such assurances is also unrealistic where they have limited knowledge of the process, material selection criteria, or limited technical resources. The development and successful execution of a quality assurance program is a collaborative effort by engineers, designers, material suppliers, equipment fabricators, and field inspectors with the full understanding and support of the end user.This paper presents an outline of the quality control activities undertaken by the authors for several recently completed and on-going hydrometallurgical projects. The activities include: prequalification of fabricators and sub-vendors, shop audits, material validation testing, material source control and verification, positive material identification of weld metal overlay, specialised welding inspection, contamination control for titanium and titanium-clad fabrication, eddy current and mass spectrometer (helium) leak testing of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, hot cycle testing of titanium clad equipment, tolerance verification for refractory lined equipment, final inspection and cleaning.

Chrysotile asbestos occurs in many counties in California, and a small production had been reported at times, but development of deposits had been disappointing. A reconnaissance survey by the Bureau of Mines indicated that several deposits in the serpentine belt in Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou Counties might contain enough asbestos of filler grade to supply the growing demand on the west coast. Accordingly from 1956 to 1958 parts of the Mount Eddy and Shasta View deposits were investigated by trenching and diamond drilling to determine their potential. The work comprised construction of roads, bulldozer trenching, excavation of areas for diamond drilling, sampling, and upping. The trenches were excavated to expose the surface extent of some of the asbestos-bearing areas, To determine the downward continuation of asbestos-bearing sections and to secure samples for test purposes, six diamond drill holes, totaling 1,738 linear feet, were drilled in two selected areas. The trenching and core-drilling indicated that the asbestos-bearing material occurs as ribs and lenses of varying thicknesses in a broad belt of serpentine, about 600 feet wide and several miles long,
