As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

"Abstract - Time-domain electromagnetic systems are most sensitive to highly conductive targets during the transmitter on-time. Data collected during the on-time is highly influenced by the geometric relationship between the transmitter and the receiver. Unless corrections can be applied for these geometric variations, the ability to correctly detect and identify highly conductive targets can not be fully realized. Variables affecting the relative position between the transmitter and receiver include changes in the position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter, variations in transmitter attitude, and transmitter loop deformation. The level of accuracy in the determination of the relative geometry required to permit complete removal of the effects due to geometric variations is different for each of the variables and is dependent on the depth of the target. The most influential geometric variation involves changes in the relative position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter along the direction of flight; this variable, therefore, requires the highest degree of accuracy. The accuracy required for receiver motions along the vertical direction is roughly one order of magnitude less, and in the lateral direction, several orders of magnitude less. The objective of this paper is to relate the sensitivity of the response to transmitter-receiver geometry to the ability of an airborne, time-domain electromagnetic system to resolve a highly conductive vertical target. This is achieved by a detailed analysis of the effect of the individual x, y, and z distances between the transmitter and the receiver, the transmitter attitude (roll, pitch, and yaw), and transmitter deformation.Sommaire - Les systèmes électromagnétiques en domaine temporel sont particulièrement sensibles aux cibles à forte conductivité durant le temps d’excitation. A simple model has been developed which describes the steady-state solute distribution in Ti-H type systems above the eutectoid temperature in the presence of a temperature gradient. The solute distribution is dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries. An interesting result, and one that is not observed at steady state in thermal diffusion below the eutectoid temperature, is the existence of a two-phase region. The heat of transport for hydrogen in a titanium, Q*a, over the temperature range 275" to 650.C is determined to be 4500 * 230 cal per mole. The heat of transport for hydrogen in B titanium, QB* over the temperature range 320" to 590.C is found to be 630 ± 200 cal per mole. It is also shown that thermal diffusion provides a method by which phase bounduries above the eutectoid may be determined in Ti-H type systems. IN modern technology materials are being used at constantly increasing temperatures under greater temperature gradients. Thus atomic migration in metal alloys due to a temperature gradient (thermal diffusion) may in some cases occur to an observable extent. The thermal diffusion of hydrogen in zirconium has in recent years received considerable attention1-' because of the use of zirconium alloys in nuclear power reactors. The thermal diffusion kinetics below the eutectoid (547°C) are fairly well understood. At steady state the solid solution, a, and hydride, 6, phases are completely separated with the hydride precipitating at the lower temperatures. No experimental work has been carried out in the a + B region although Droege4 suggested that a complete separation of the two phases, as observed at temperatures below the eutectoid, might not always occur. In the present investigation a simple model has been used to determine the steady-state solute distribution under a temperature gradient in Zr-H type systems heated above the eutectoid temperature. The solute distribution is shown to be dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries in the constitutional diagrams and several typical cases are discussed. The model has been applied to Ti-H. This system was chosen in preference to Zr-H because of its much lower eutectoid temperature (-300°C as compared with 547.C), thereby reducing experimental errors due to oxidation and hydriding. The heats of transport for hydrogen in the a and B phases of titanium also have been determined since they were required to compare the proposed thermal diffusion model with experiment. THEORY In the presence of a temperature gradient the atomic flux in a single-phase region of a two-com-ponent system of which the atoms of only one component are diffusing is given by:' J = - U\dx + RT3 dx) which can be written as: j-D(dn/dt +Q*n/RT2)dt/dx [11 J - -D\dT + RT2)dx [1] where D = diffusion coefficient, n = solute concentration, T = absolute temperature, R = gas constant, dT/dx = temperature gradient, and Q* = heat of transport. At steady state (J = 0) Eq. [I] leads to the solute distribution: n = noexp Q*/RT where no = a constant depending on total solute content. The heat of transport Q* can be experimentally determined from the steady-state distribution. In the present paper we shall determine the solute distribution in systems having the constitutional diagram exemplified by Ti-H shown in Fig. l.' As shown, N,(T) and NB(T) are the equilibrium solute concentrations in the a and 0 phases at temperature T. Lines AA' and CC' define the region of interest to us. The following assumptions are made: 1) Steady-state conditions prevail. 2) In a single-phase region all points on an isotherm have the same thermodynamic potential so that the composition over an isotherm is uniform. If a two-phase region exists, thermodynamic equilibrium is found only at phase interfaces. However, we assume the component of the concentration gradient along an isotherm to be small so that the composition in each phase is approximately the same as at the interface and is given by the constitutional diagram, Fig. 1. 3) There is appreciable diffusion of only one component. 4) We shall consider only the case where Qa*, QB*, and Qg*, the heats of transport for solute diffusion in the a, B, and 6 phases, respectively, are positive. This has been observed for the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in zirconium3 and titanium.10 We will show that the steady-state solute distribution above the eutectoid is primarily determined by the heats of transport and the temperature dependence of Na(T) and Np(T). The Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of fractionating lanthanide nitrates with a tertiary amine on lanthanum-cerium and thulium-ytterbium pairs. Optimum values were determined for pH, phase concentration, and percent chelation of metal ions in the aqueous phase. Percent extraction is markedly dependent on the concentration of lithium nitrate in the aqueous phase. Selective masking of the heavier element in each extraction system with DTPA or EDTA aqueous-phase chelating agents resulted in lanthanum-cerium separation factors of 8.5 and thulium-ytterbium separation factors of 3.4.

United States Steel Corporation began mining coal in southern West Virginia at the turn of the century, and until the late 40's production was confined to underground mines. Surface mining was initiated in our southern West Virginia -holdings as a means of recovering coal that could not be obtained by underground mining methods. After observing and evaluating surface mining methods employed by other companies, some of which operated on lands of U. S. Steel on a lease basis, we undertook the establishment of a surface mining operation. Our method, as, initiated in the early 50's, remains basically the same today. Variations have come about primarily by equipment modifications. The method consists' of a pioneer cut to establish the coal outcrop, a drill bench for drilling, blasting, and removal of the overburden from the top of the coal. The land is rugged except for the flood plains of some of the larger streams. The mountains have steep slopes, averaging 30 degrees, with relatively sharp ridges and very narrow valleys,. Geologically, the coals_ lie in the Pocahontas formation of the Pottsville group in the Pennsylvanian system. This means that the coals in our area of operation lie at the base of. The coal measures in the Appalachian range. The coal that we have mined is primarily the Pocahontas nos. 3 and 4 seams. We have mined negligible amounts of other seams in the Pocahontas groups above the no. 4 seam. The Pocahontas no. 3 seam, which is the lowest mineable seam geologically in this area, lies anywhere from 700 feet below: the valley floor up to 400 feet above the floor. This is occasioned by the Anticlinal formation which gives us grades Of about 9% at the anticline, decreasing to about 1 to 1-1/2% on the extreme flanks. We have the opportunity to engage in surface mining where the coal seams intercept the surface above the valley floors.

Tata Steel Limited which is Asia?s first and India?s largest integrated private sector steel company, as part of its vision to grow in related industries is also undertaking the Titania project. The project will involve mining, separation of ilmenite and other valuable minerals from the inland heavy mineral sands deposit in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The raw material will be beneficiated to synthetic rutile, titanium dioxide pigment and ultimately to titanium metal. The recently concluded feasibility study revealed that the deposit under consideration has 10.4%of total heavy mineral content and 15.2% slimes of the size below 63 µm, over an average sand thickness of 6.9 metres. The presence of about 15% slimes in ROM sand coupled with scarcity of water at the project site complicates the slimes handling/disposal system, requiring the development of an innovative, efficient and effective system for disposal of slimes. Mineral characteristics of slimes revealed the presence of kaolinite clay, which poses its own challenges in thickening/dewatering of slimes. This paper outlines the detailed studies conducted, including slime characterization, settling and thickening characteristics, and ge-technical studies to arrive at an efficient and effective slime handling/disposal system, with a view to plant saplings on the mined-out reclaimed land with species typically suitable to that environment.

Os desafios para o aprimoramento do desempenho operacional dos altos-fornos constituem um campo aberto para o desenvolvimento e aplicação de métodos de controle que promovam a otimização da operação do reator, aliada ao prolongamento da sua vida útil. O Alto-Forno 3 da Usiminas - Ipatinga, nesta sua 4ª campanha, foi projetado para 15 anos de operação, com uma produção estimada de 41 milhões de toneladas de gusa. Os resultados da campanha atual, em termos de produção e de duração da campanha, superam os dados projetados. Neste contexto, são apresentadas as principais características do Alto-Forno 3 na sua atual campanha, a evolução do seu desempenho em termos de produtividade e tempo de operação, além das principais ações direcionadas para a preservação e estabilidade do sistema de refrigeração e do cadinho, contribuindo para o prolongamento da sua vida útil. Como resultado destes esforços, a vida útil estimada do Alto-Forno 3 é de 22 anos, superando em 7 anos a duração prevista.

Using a combined fire assay-atomic absorption method, gold determinations with a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb were made on 345 samples of Early Precambrian felsic plutonic rocks collected 2 2 from intrusions ranging in size from 4 km to 88 km and in composition from syenite to granodiorite. Gold levels in unmineralized stocks are consistently below the 5 ppb detection limit of the analytical method used. In contrast, analyses of samples from stocks containing gold mines within their borders and in nearby metavolcanic-metasedimentary host rocks show a strongly skewed trace element gold population with a substantial percentage of gold values exceeding 5 ppb and ranging as high as 320 ppb. The data indicate that (1) ore-stage hydrothermal metasomatism has produced widespread Au enrichment in Precambrian intrusions that host epigenetic vein-type gold deposits, and (2) geochemical Au analysis of samples collected from 30 to 50 randomly distributed sites can be used to estimate the gold exploration potential of stock-sized bodies and to outline internal patterns of Au variation which may be useful in directing exploration to particular contacts or portions of a stock. The results do not conclusively indicate unusually high Au content in primary unaltered igneous rocks.

preparation of specification coals for the utility industry is approached from the standpoint of a cooperative effort with the power company to assure that the shipped product will be a noncorrosive coal. Selective mining, coal preparation, the use of additives, and coal blending are mine-site techniques proposed as means for upgrading corrosion-retarding constituents of utility coals (CaO and MgO) while, at the same time, reducing the concentration of those constituents of coal (Na20 and K,O) which cause corrosion. Data obtained from large-scale boiler testing in combination with bench-scale physical and chemical tests are used as a basis for the formulation of mine-site procedures to improve coal combustion utilization. Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F. In addition to causing power outages and high maintenance costs, corrosion is a continuing barrier to the future development of more efficient steam cycles which permit lower generation costs when using coal. Research methods of the past which have been directed at finding solutions which could be applied at the power plant site have been only partially successful and are generally costly. This paper contains a suggested --method of corrosion control through investigation of the problem at the source of the trouble—the coal supplier facility. It is proposed that mine-site pre-ventative procedures be considered as an effective means of cooperative corrosion control between the power company and the coal supplier. Economic justification must be applied to the individual situation. This paper is based on recent work by Combustion Engineering, Inc. and the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University under a contract from the Department of the Interior Office of Coal Research.',' Results which are of importance to this discussion may be summarized as follows: 1) The alkali minerals of coal (Na2O and K2O), as measured by an acid leaching process, can be related to corrosion rate in utility boilers. As these constituents increase in a coal product, its corrosiveness can be expected to worsen. 2) The alkaline-earth minerals contained in coal, reported as total CaO and MgO reduce corrosiveness 2s their concentration increases. 3) Naturally occuring, alkaline-earth-bearing materials, such as limestone and dolomite, may be added to a coal to reduce its corrosiveness. 4) Coals with very low iron contents tend to be less corrosive. These results provide the groundwork for examination of the system of operations which occur at the supplier facility from the seam face where mining is begun to the point of loading for shipment. The Mining System Fig. 1 is a cross section of one of the typical coal seams (designated coal A) that was boiler tested during this research program. This seam is overlain by material which consists primarily of a gray-black shale. In the lower third of this seam, there exists a thin rock parting of less than 4 in. in thickness which is consistent throughout the seam. The floor material is fireclay. Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Application to both an abandoned mine site and a newly opened mine site in Fiji showed that this approach could provide a risk-based estimate for rehabilitation cost and demonstrated potential applicable in the Fijian context.CITATION:Soro, A T, Mulligan, D R, McIlveen, G, Franks, D M, Robinson, J J and Noller, B N, ?2014. A mineralogical and geochemical characterization study was carried out on arsenic-bearing Ketza mine tailings to complement a column extraction test program with the purpose of assessing the potential of arsenic mobilization from the tailings. Two types of tailings samples (i.e., exposed tailings from the impoundment area and water covered tailings samples) were subjected to column tests under standing water cover and with no water cover but weekly flow-through flushing. The tailings have a uniform size distribution. The samples are characterized by high Fe2O3 (44.0 to 68.2 %) and As (3.7 to 4.4w%) concentrations. Ferric hydroxides are the dominant species that are mostly amorphous or cryptocrystalline. Arsenopyrite, scorodite, an Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase, an Fe-Bi-As phase and ferric hydroxides are the arsenic-bearing minerals. Arsenic is essentially contained in Ca-As goethite, Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase and scorodite. Goethite, although containing low levels of arsenic, could be a significant arsenic-bearing phase because of its high abundance. There does not appear to be any significant chemical or mineralogical difference between the original exposed tailings and the material left underwater with no flow-through for over a year. There are differences in terms of CaO, Fe2O3, SiO,, As, goethite, scorodite, calcite and dolomite concentrations between the exposed tailings and the column material after undergoing approximately two-year flow-through and aggressive leach tests. These differences are likely to be resulting from a combination of different column test conditions and sampling or heterogeneity of the material.

Foundation problems due to collapsible and expansive soils are well known throughout the arid western United States. Millions of dollars are spent annually to counteract the effects of such soils for both new foundations and existing foundations suffering from settlement or heave. Over the last 20 years helical screw piles have come into wide-spread use as a permanent deep foundation element for these problem soils, especially in the arid western United States where, in some areas, they are a standard of practice. Independent research resulting in recognition by every national building code in the United States has legitimized helical screw pile technology. Once thought of in terms of light structural underpinning, helical screw piles of today are designed to take heavy structural loads, vertical and lateral, tension or compression, including seismic loads. With proper pile grouping, design capacities for column loads over 4,500 kN (1,000 kips) are attainable. This paper discusses design considerations specifically dealing with collapsible and expansive soils: soil investigation parameters, predicted settlement and long-term creep, heave in expansive soils, downdrag in collapsible soils, shaft slenderness buckling, maintaining shaft alignment during installation, refusal condition, water migration along the shaft, lateral loading, cyclical loading for seismic loads and machine foundations, corrosion, helix durability during installation, the installation torque vs. capacity equation, and design methodology. The paper concludes with several case histories where helical screw piles were used for new structural foundations and to underpin existing failed foundations in St. George, Utah, Cedar City, Utah, and Denver, Colorado, USA, sites of some of the most expansive clay and collapsible soil in North America. Soil descriptions and performance histories are presented.

An Untapped Energy Resource As much as 20 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day are flared from remote oil fields for lack of a commercially viable means of capturing, transporting, and marketing such gas. The magnitude of these gas flares can be put into perspective from an early satellite photograph (Fig. 1) which shows lights from the major cities of Russia and Eastern Europe dwarfed by the natural gas being flared in the Persian Gulf. Together, these wasted resources contain the energy equivalent of about one-half of the gasoline consumption in the United States today (Fig. 2). Additional trillions of cubic feet of natural gas are "shut-in" because of no economically viable means of commercial recovery. Methanol and liquified natural gas (LNG) are the only two practical fuel products which can be produced economically from these gas supplies. Many of these gas supplies are less than 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, making an LNG facility uneconomic. In contrast, barge-mounted methanol plants can economically convert billions of cubic feet of gas per day into safe, clean-burning methanol. The methanol approach offers the only economical route to transform vast, known reserves of natural gas into a highly versatile primary liquid fuel. Methanol Barges: An Innovative Solution The barges will be towed to suitable offshore and upriver locations such as Alaska, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Islands, as well as fields in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea. At the offshore production site, a barge will be anchored by a single point mooring buoy that will also serve as an entry point for natural gas feedstock and an offloading point for methanol (Fig. 3). At some sites the barge would be beached. Each barge will produce methanol and store it in internal tanks with a capacity of 18 million gallons. The methanol will be offloaded into conventional tankers and safely transported directly to market. Unlike LNG, methanol requires neither specially built carriers nor specially built receiving terminals. Once a particular gas field has been exhausted, the barge will be towed to another location to continue production. Each barge will measure 320 by 500 ft, approximately the size of four football fields, and will have the capacity to produce 1 million gallons or 2800 metric tons of methanol per day, from approximately 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (Fig. 4). The barges will use the highly successful "low- pressure" design developed by the Lurgi Company of Germany, a process proven in land-based methanol plants throughout the world during the last ten years. The decision to use Lurgi technology for "sea-trans- portable" methanol plants was based on the higher efficiency and greater operability of the technology compared to other commercially proven processes. The conversion plant will be designed to accept a wide variety of feed gas compositions, and will produce chemical-grade methanol for the broadest market base (Fig. 5). To minimize costs and construction time, the barge-mounted plants will be built in the high technology environment of a domestic or foreign shipyard. Selection of the construction site for each barge will be dictated by the location of the production site and by the relative construction costs. A number of shipyards have the capacity to build several barges per year. The detailed marine engineering to integrate the design of the processing plant with the floating platform can be performed by numerous major engineering companies around the world. Production Economics The barge-mounted plant concept not only assures large volumes of methanol, but it also keeps the overall production cost low by minimizing construction cost and providing access to low cost natural gas feedstock with no alternative or a negative value. Together, these advantages make the barge-mounted methanol plants economical today. The cost structure of a new barge-mounted methanol plant differs from that of existing methanol producers around the world (Fig. 6). For example, if a U.S. Gulf Coast producer is paying $4.70/MMBtu in 1985 for natural gas, the barge plant could afford to pay about $1.6O/MMBtu for gas and be able to deliver methanol to the Gulf Coast at the same price. At some future date such as 1990, a gas cost of $6.70/MMBtu for a domestic producer would have cost parity with about $3.60/MMBtu gas cost for the barge plant. In many foreign markets, feedstocks other than natural gas are used for methanol production (Fig. 7). For example, most of Japan's capacity is based on LNG while Western Europe uses residual oil or naptha. Because these feedstocks are substantially more ex- pensive than natural gas used by U.S. producers, the barge plants will compete even more favorably in these foreign markets. As crude oil prices rise, the value of methanol in each of these markets will increase. However, the hierarchy of methanol values in these markets should remain unchanged. Furthermore, the cost advantage for using methanol in these markets will improve as world energy costs increase since the value of remote gas should not escalate significantly.

Uranium ore bodies contain elements within mineral phases that need to be disposed of responsibly. Solid waste can be placed in a tailings management facility (TMF) to contain the waste elements and limit interactions with the environment. It is important to understand how the chemistry of the tailings evolves throughout the lifetime of the operations that feed the TMF and after the site has been decommissioned. The objective of our collaboration with Orano Canada was to study how the tailings from the TMF located at McClean Lake, Saskatchewan change over time. This manuscript discusses our use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray microprobe to study the fate of Mo and Ca in the tailings. Mo is considered an element of concern (EOC) and it is necessary to determine if a stable solid Mo-bearing species forms. Thermodynamic modeling suggested that aqueous Mo would precipitate over time as powellite (CaMoO4). Comparing Mo K-edge XAS spectra from the solid tailings to the aqueous Mo concentration in the pore water showed that powellite did form and that this did result in a decrease in the aqueous Mo concentration over time. Further, it has been proposed that Ca2+(aq) can react with bicarbonate ions in the pore water and precipitate as calcium carbonate (e.g., CaCO3). This reaction would limit the aqueous bicarbonate present in the tailings that could react with uranyl ions to form soluble uranyl-carbonate complexes. We have identified several trace Ca-bearing species, including carbonates, in the tailings using XAS and X-ray microprobe.

Walker (Walker Engineering Corp., Salt Lake City)-Mr. Kinkel's article embodies, in condensed form, the results of the first detailed and complete geological survey that has ever been made of the long neglected but potentially very important West Shasta Copper-Zinc district, in Shasta County, California. In view of the difficulties of the terrain and the complexity of the geological structure, this represents a notable achievement, and it is with regret, therefore, that the writers find it necessary to differ from Mr. Kinkel's conclusions on two important points. The first has to do with the interpretation of two members of the stratigraphic column of formations in the district; for purposes of comparison, the description of these two members according to Mr. Kinkel is shown parallel to the description of these members according to the writers, see Fig. 14, Mr. Kinkel's nomenclature being used

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse. VAIONT RESERVOIR SLIDE Fig. 1 shows Vaiont Dam in Italy which is a double curvature arch, 875 ft high, located on a tributary of the Piave River, north and west of Venice. When completed in 1960 it was the highest arch dam in the world. In 1960 a sizable landslide (some 700,000 cu yd) occurred on the left abutment a short distance above the dam. Following this, the reservoir was held down for construction of a by-pass tunnel through the right valley wall to insure connection with the upper end of the reservoir in event of further slides. In October 1963 a giant landslide occurred on the left valley wall, over a width of some 14 miles (see Fig. 2). Over 300 million cu yd slid into the reservoir, displacing the water and forming a hige wave 700 ft above the top of the dam as it hit the opposite, or right, wall of the valley. The wave then passed some 500 ft over top of the dam, followed down the tortuous winding canyon and debouched into the

"Hanwha Mining Services was approached by Glencore Coal to provide a series of (trial) demonstration blasts at its Clermont coalmine. The intent of the project was to trial a bulk explosive product that would be able to provide sufficient energy for the ground type encountered without production of post-blast fume. Three blasts were loaded using the patented XLOAD bulk explosives with a density of 1.00 g/cc. XLOAD bulk products are water resistant explosives that can be loaded at densities much lower than traditional (generic) water resistant heavy ammonium nitrate – fuel oil (ANFO) or pumped blends with significantly reduced risk of fume. In addition, these products have detonation characteristics that generally deliver a higher heave partition than conventional bulk products and hence improve muck pile looseness and digability.The priority key performance measures included the absence of fume from blasting, being at least cost neutral and providing similar if not improved shovel dig rates. The design for the initial blast took a conservative approach to ensure the key blast outcomes of fume control and fragmentation were achieved.The second blast used the same pattern dimensions as the benchmark bulk product used in this area to provide a cost neutral comparison with the benchmark products that had been used over the prior six months. This resulted in a 20 per cent lower powder factor than would have otherwise been used. To test the suitability of XLOAD, this shot was slept for over two weeks between loading and firing in geology where the sleep time is typically kept to a few days to minimise the fume risk.The third blast utilised a slightly larger drill pattern to push the capabilities of XLOAD and provide a cost neutral comparison between the trial product and the traditional benchmark products. All three blasts were fired with no fume observed, no recordable incidents and good fragmentation. Shovel productivity from all three of the trial blasts was excellent with higher average instantaneous dig rates being recorded (average six per cent improvement against the instantaneous dig rates recorded for the benchmark blasts).Citation:Rock, J and Bambrook, K, 2016.
