Refratários de alta alumina apresentam boa refratariedade, elevada resistência mecânica em altas temperaturas, boa resistência à variação bruscas de temperatura sem se romper sendo utilizados em revestimento de panelas e válvulas siderúrgicas devido sua propriedade anfótero e ter aplicações sobre à ação de escórias básicas. Neste trabalho procurou-se avaliar o efeito de adições de 1,5; 3,0 e 4,5%p. de Nb2O5 em refratário de alta alumina, estes obtidos a partir de uma mistura de diversos tipos de alumina, 5,0 %p. ZrO2 nanométrica (TZ-8Y) e agregado de mulita, sinterizados em temperaturas de 1400 e 1600 °C. Como nestes refratários a ZrO2 não surte o efeito de microtrincamento, a formação de fase vítrea a partir de Nb2O5 e a incorporação de agregados ao refratário foram fundamentais nas propriedades obtidas. Foram avaliadas propriedades tecnológicas como densidade e porosidade aparente pelo método de Arquimedes, formação de fases por difração de raios-X e análise microestrutural por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e resistência ao choque térmico.

B. F. TiLLson*— The manifold difficulties of accurate anemometry in irregular sections of mine passageways, the irregular distributions of velocities in cross sections of the same, and the disturbing influence of the observer upon the air flow, all indicate an undesirable inaccuracy of results obtainable by any standardized method of traversing the section by an anemometer. It seems obvious that another, and simpler, method should be used to determine the volume of air flow in mine passages, namely: 1. At appropriate locations cement or calked framework rings should be installed permanently to equalize the irregularities of sectional contour and provide a place and means of attachment for a temporary cloth brattice which bears a rigid orifice. 2. The measurement of the velocity of air flow through the orifice may then be by anemometer or, preferably, by Pitot tube measurements of the differential pressures on both sides of the orifice in accordance with the standard practices available in engineering 1iterature. † The constants may be determined for various measuring positions in relation to the resulting "vena contracta." 3. The position of the person who makes the measurements is behind the brattice out of the air stream. The Pitot tube does not offer as disturbing an obstruction as the anemometer. A recording gauge may be employed to integrate fluctuations in air flow through that portion of the mine. No traverses are required because the reading may be at a single central point. An anemometer can be used with an orifice flow. The orifice will increase the air velocity at the measuring point, with correspondingly more accurate measurements where the normal air velocity through the passageway is low. Portable brattices might be devised with the cushioning rims which would seal against irregular rock surfaces where permanent rings were not available or feasible. The development by the Ventilation Committee of standard procedures and devices for the orifice measurement of the flow of mine ventilating air might be a desirable project for this coming year. C. M. Smith (author's reply)—Thank you for your discussion of my paper on underground anemometry. Your suggested method of measuring underground air flow is a novel one which might be applicable in some situations. It should be tested along with other suggested methods in any investigation of this subject. G. E. McElroy*—In spite of the adverse publicity that vane-anemometer methods of air measurement have had in the past and that contributed by the present paper, I endorse Mr. Erickovic's statement that anemometer traversing "has proved to be widely applicable, expeditious and simple" and add that available methods are accurate enough for the purposes for which they may be used. The fact that the great majority of minor mine officials assess relative changes in rates of air flow by comparison of crude vane-anemometer measurements, known to average 20 to 30 pct high, has no important bearing on this subject, because state inspection standards were based originally on such methods of air measurement. Federal inspection standards are based on actual rates of flow as determined by traversing, and interest in traversing methods is rapidly increasing. In considering traversing methods, three aspects are of major importance: (1) the absolute accuracy of calibrations; (2) the degree of interference with normal flow conditions introduced by traversing methods designed for accurate measurement by shaft-mounted instruments; and (3) the proper "method" factor to use for approximate measurements by hand-held instruments. With respect to absolute accuracy of calibrations, we have always placed reliance on calibrations made by the National Bureau of Standards, with which manufacturers' calibrations have usually agreed very closely. It is therefore particularly disturbing to find7 that calibrations made previous to June 1947 are presumably about 5 pct in error because of excessive registry caused by the thin flat plates on which anemometers were mounted for calibration. Velocities corrected for calibration have therefore averaged about 5 pct low in all probability. In this connection, it is interesting to note that an anemometer calibrated against Pitot-tube measurement by a single-point method in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal nine in 1923 indicated this same difference of about 5 pct and that the same instrument calibrated by a traversing method in a metal mine some months later indicated a difference in the same direction of about 4 pct. These results are reported by the Bureau of Mines.8 Regarding the degree of interference, or changes in velocity distribution, caused by the position of the observer's body in traversing operations, misconceptions seem to be especially prevalent, resulting in increasing advocacy of methods, such as the "clear section" method outlined in this paper, that cause just the type of interferences that they are designed to avoid. The degree of interference for any method may be gauged easily by a few experiments with a velocity-pressure gauge connected to a Pitot tube or with an indicating velocity meter such as the Velometer. In an experiment cited by McElroy and Richardson,# a decrease of 5 pct was noted at ten widths upstream from a 6-in. plank, whereas an observer's body at about the maximum practical distance of 6 ft downstream from the instrument is only about four widths away. In the Bureau of Standards paper previously mentioned, it is recommended that supports used in calibrations be at least 16 widths downstream. In practice, therefore, a downstream position of the observer is ruled out as far as accurate measurement is concerned. Operation of the anemometer by rigid shaft support from a point outside the section is seldom practicable; however, accurate results can be obtained, with the anemometer rigidly attached to a short shaft and held at arm's length, by an observer advancing across the traversed section while he faces the opposite wall and stands sideways to the current, provided that he keeps the instrument at least 3 ft away from his body at all times and traverses the entire section with it. If the traverse can be started with the observer in a side recess, the entire section can be covered in one operation. Normally, it would be covered in two half-sections. The presence of the observer's body does not, as is commonly supposed, increase the average velocity throughout the remaining part of the section. Rather, the velocities 1 to 2 ft on either side of his body are increased, but the distribution of velocities throughout the rest of the cross section remains normal, and a traverse made as stated gives a true average velocity for normal-flow conditions. Regarding the proper "method" factor for accounting for interference in the approximate methods of traversing with hand-held instruments, here again confusion prevails, for which the writer must assume some of the blame. This report describes Bureau of Mines investigations of a low-grade scheelite-bearing granodiorite intrusive situated on Henderson Creek, Granite County, Mont. The intrusive is in a narrow, V-shaped valley at the head of extensive placer workings. Since May 1943 the H. & R. Mines Co. of Portland, Oreg., has recovered scheelite sand and gold from the placer workings. A modified Yuba, 4?cubic foot bucket dredge was used in the operation. By February 1947 this operation had recovered and marketed over 215,000 pounds of scheelite concentrates containing 63 percent WO3. The scheelite in the placer was found to be derived principally from erosion of the granodiorite intrusive. The intrusive is one of a series of four similar, dikelike masses of granodiorite whose outcrops are aligned along a 10-mile zone of weakness trending N. 60° E. The intrusive has a triangular outcrop exposed over an area of 57 acres. Trenching and sampling by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that scheelite is sparsely distributed throughout the granodiorite. This work delimited the outcrop of the intrusive and indicated a large submarginal reserve of low-grade tungsten mineralization. The deposit is ideally suited for exploitation by large-scale, open-pit mining operations; it would be easily available in a national emergency. Additional exploration would be necessary, however, before large-scale production plans could be made efficiently or accurately.

The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size.

"The use of the finite element method (FEM) for studying the plastic behavior of metals has become a common practice over the past few years, because it has been proved to be a good means of evaluating processes parameters, and predicting and improving processes, avoiding the traditional trail and error technique. FEM was used via a commercial package (Abaqus) to create two dimensional models to simulate uniaxial tensile tests for a galvanized low carbon steel. The aim of the work was to analyse the plastic behaviour of a distribution of grains on the zinc cover of a set of galvanized low carbon steel samples. A mesh with lines 2 mm apart was drawn on one of the faces of the samples that were deformed at room temperature, at constant crosshead speed, stopping the deformation at different times. Before and during the stops the deformation measurements were recorded for further calculations in an image analyser in order to compare these with computational predictions, as well as validate the numerical model. The results of this study can be extended to other testing conditions, besides the model can be used for obtaining constitutive equations of the materials.INTRODUCTIONThe use of the finite element method has been widely spread during the last two decades in most engineering areas, it is a good means of obtaining approach values at a first try [1-4]. Thanks to the software and hardware developments it is now possible to run huge problems within hours or minutes, making the technique more accessible and useful for the industry.The aim of this work is to create a finite element model for the uniaxial simple tension test, and compare the results with some experimental results, and asses the validity of the model.The plastic behaviour of the materials with FEM has been studied for a long time [5] and there is always something new to learn about this behaviour of the metals in particular, as well as to characterized new materials and alloys [6,7]. The tension test has been used since XIX century to get knowledge of the materials [5,8], it is the test that has been used the most and the only that is fully standardized, although it has the limiting of low strains, it is still the most widely used, especially in the industry.Two different finite element models in two dimensions (2D) have been developed, one called the mesh model and the other one the grain model, attention was focused on the geometry and strain prediction. The model is validated with experimental test, by using the data and directly comparing it with the numerical predictions. All the tests were carried out at the same constant crosshead speed at room temperature. An analysis of the grid distortion using FEM and analytical methods has been carried out."

"Function of High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) in production of oxidized pellets from magnetite concentrate as raw material was systematically studied. It was found that bentonite dosage decreased from 1.3% to 0.8% if specific surface area of magnetite concentrate pretreated by HPRG was up to 2553.41cm2.g-1. The green ball quality improved obviously due to the increase of specific surface area and fine particles content, and the improvements of size distribution and the ballability of pretreated materials. However, the decrease of pellet porosity accelerated the primary solid phase reaction and oxidation reaction, which made the pellets surface form compacted layer that handicapped the diffusion and migration of oxygen, promoting the formation of double layer structure of finished pellet. Consequently, the compression strength of preheated and roasted pellets was not markedly improved by HPRG.IntroductionWith the increase of proportion of pellets in the BF recently, the technical-economic index of BF has obviously been improved. Consequently, the production and the quality of BF pellet are given more attention [1]. However, with the decrease of the quality of iron ore concentrate, the problems such as poor ballability, high bentonite dosage, high preheating and roasting temperature are becoming the great challenges to not only the quality of finished pellets, but also the energy consumption [2, 3]. In order to overcome these problems, mechanical pretreating technologies such as the High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) and Damp-grinding are widely applied. HPRG has a number of advantages such as low energy consumption, high productivity and easy-maintaining. It is more economic and environmentally friendly than the Damp-grinding technology [4, 5]. A great number of experiments have revealed that HPRG can improve the quality of hematite pellets. Although there are some studies of function of HPRG in the magnetite oxidized pellet production, they are not comprehensive and systematic, especially to the preheating and roasting system [1, 2, 6, 7]. Accordingly, the influence of HPRG on the pelletizing system and the preheating and roasting system are systematically studied in production of magnetite oxidized pellets in this article."

We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was mode under a co¬operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior.Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub¬mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.SUMMARYA comparison of certain properties of the commercial aviation gasolines produced in the United States during 1950, 1951, and 1952 is presented in table 1, the 1952 data being average values from tables 3 through 7 of the present report. Trends in certain characteristics of these fuels may be seen in figures 1 through 5 which also indicate the minimum and maximum values. As may be observed, the properties of commercial aviation gasolines have not varied greatly during recent years. A list of aviation-fuel survey reports published by the Bureau of Mines is given on page 7.Table 2 presents a summary of data from table 8 and compares properties of aviation jet fuels of 1952 with summarized data on jet fuels of October 1951."

Roof bolting in the Pittsburgh Coalbed takes many forms today: coupled partially grouted bolts, fully grouted rebar, passive cable bolts, tensioned cable bolts, and torque tension rebar. The Federal No. 2 Mine of Peabody Energy has recently made a significant advance in longwall headgate primary roof support, with the change fiom an 8 ft long coupled partially grouted bolt to a 6 ft long torque tension system. The coupled partially grouted bolt consists of a 4 ft long 0.804 in diameter rolled deformation bar thread coupled to a smooth 718 in headed bar. The coupled partially grouted bolt is anchored into a 1 318 in borehole with 4 ft of high speed resin. The 718 in diameter smooth bar is tensioned by rotation into the treaded coupler, upon setting of the resin, compressing the immediate roof. The change was initially driven by occasional failure of the coupled partially grouted bolt at the threaded coupler, due to lateral movement caused by horizontal stress. A fully grouted % in diameter torque tension bolt, in a 1 in borehole, was proposed as a cost effective primary bolting for the high horizontal stress conditions. The upper 2 112 ft of the rebar is anchored in fast set, medium viscosity resin and the bottom 3 K ft is anchored in slow set, special low insertion force resin. The lower end of the rebar is threaded with a nut that permits the counter clockwise spinning of the bolt to mix the resin, at maximum rotational torque. Upon setting of the high speed top resin, the nut is spun clockwise to tighten the nut against a metal dome plate. The plate is forced against the roof to compress the immediate roof, A complete headgate entry has been successfully supported with the torque tension system. The mining of the adjacent longwall panel was completed in September 2004. The torque tension system provided a 25% savings over the previously employed coupled partially grouted bolt system.

An experimental investigation was carried out to -study the rates of reduction of pellets containing iron oxides by carbon dissolved in liquid iron, at temperatures ranging from 1720 K to 1973 K. Several different pellet types were employed; the materials used in the pellet's manufacture were pure hematite, two kinds of commercial iron ores, and mixtures hematite/silica and hematite/lime: Reaction times were determined employing the constant volume pressure increase technique (CVPI). It has been observed that the reaction rate increases as the temperature and the pellet's specific surface area increases. The reaction rate is also affected by the oxide type: pellets made from commercial ores or from mixtures hematite/silica or hematite/lime show reaction rates lower than those made from pure hematite.

Health and safety of workers in mineral industry in the U.S. is still a vey important issue as Mining along with Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Construction industries have contributed most of the fatal occupational injuries ill between 1980 - 1995 (Worker Health Chartbook, 2000). Health and safety issues, especially for the mining or related excavation industries, arise either from exposures of the human workers to the contaminants liberated or generated by mining operations that have adverse effects on human health (for example coal dust etc.) or from the exposures of the human workers to hazardous working environment that constitutes mining operations (for example blasting etc.). One of the biggest challenges is to understand the combinatorial effect of numerous work-condition (e.g. exposure to dust) and human-factor (e.g. smoking habit) variables on a health or safety-condition variable (e.g. incidence rate of a disease). This paper uses an example dataset on Coal miners' cough problem to illustrate the applicability of Generalized Linear Modeling (GLM) in understanding the relation between cough and other response variables, such as, age, height, smoking habits, time of underground exposure etc.

To construct the accessing railroad line to the northern portal of Seikan Undersea Tunnel, nine tunnels amounting 7.4km in their total length were excavated through soft mudstones of young- er tertiary era with use of smaller-sized mechanic al excavators. Rocks were classified in four classes to which the tunnel support was designed respectively. Of several combinations of driving equipments stu- died comparatively, the method using the mechani- cal excavators was estimated to be the best choi- ce. The efficiency of the excavator was traced in every construction section and the data colle- cted was reviewed numerically. The result showed that the efficiency of the excavator dropped wh- ere the rocks were as hard as over 200kg/crif for compressive strength. And a few technigues in tunnelling i.e. contr- olling dusts in shotcreting, lattice arch, evaluati- ng measured deformations were tested and review- ed too.

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. RÉSUMÉ La conception des fosses ainsi que l'évaluation des ressources géologiques et des réserves minières sont désormais réalisées entièrement à l'aide d'outils informatiques spécialisés. Cependant, plusieurs analyses, pourtant essentielles à l'évaluation de la viabilité du projet, sont réalisées en parallèle sans véritable optimisation ni synergie avec l'ensemble des données disponibles. Cet article présente deux approches permettant d'intégrer certains types d'analyses aux modèles de blocs miniers. Ces approches permettent de quantifier la broyabilité du massif rocheux ainsi que d'étudier la stabilité des pentes minières à même les outils d'optimisation et de planification minières. Cette méthode permet dès l'étude de faisabilité d'un projet minier de maximiser les données disponibles, menant ainsi à une approche plus intégrée en conception minière. De plus, ces approches sont flexibles et permettent d'évaluer rapidement plusieurs scénarios, tout en laissant la possibilité de bonifier le modèle et de revoir la conception tout au long du projet minier.

The process for which it is to be used is too often the only consideration in the design of a vessel. A de-sign allowing for practical manufacture and erection, as well as for proper maintenance, can often give over-all economies. Most platework in-stalled today is of welded construction. Therefore, metallurgical control is important in its manufacture. Also, because many concentrating and re-fining processes tend to be corrosive, the subject of protective coatings as a part of the manufacturing process is extremely important. The plant de-signer should know how to evaluate and specify controls for the metallurgy and for the coatings. Mining operations are becoming more sophisticated in the field of mechanical engineering. More and more emphasis is being given to preventive maintenance. The first step in any maintenance program, however, is good inspection service. This paper will suggest methods for the inspection of platework, and outline methods for repair and replacement.

Foi iniciado um estudo de patologia das estruturas de concreto, com uma empresa especializada em recuperação estrutural para conhecer as causas e recomendar a melhor terapia estrutural a ser realizada. Após o estudo, definiu-se a terapia adequada das estruturas. Esta atividade foi classificada como de grande risco e teve foco na segurança da equipe e operação do sistema, de modo que todo o serviço fosse executado sem quaisquer incidentes as pessoas, ao meio ambiente e ou interrupções de energia elétrica. Havia desafios como realizar manutenção nas proximidades da linha viva, serviços em altura com utilização de andaimes, período de chuvas e ventos, trocas de equipes e anomalias. As estruturas tratadas foram Pórticos com 17 metros de altura, postes e suportes para isoladores, TPs, TCs, Seccionadoras e Transformadores. A atividade durou 04 meses e contabilizou 5.752 horas de trabalho. Os resultados foram significativos e dentro do esperado, sem ocorrência de incidentes, prolongamento da vida útil e aumento considerável da segurança da equipe e do sistema de distribuição.

"The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China. The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture rone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrurn in stage I and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to rone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."
