This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

"The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

"Addressing a current operating and environmental concern, this paper first presents an overview of the design program for an underground radioactive waste storage vault. It then reviews the construction, operational and thermal-mechanical aspects of such a project. The relevant experience from major underground construction projects is reviewed and the paper concludes with brief comments on the design-oriented research and development requirements . 1. IntroductionA program to develop techniques for the ultimate disposal of high-level radioactive waste into geologic formations was announced by AECL in 1975 (Tamrnernagi, 1976), and is discussed more fully in a later document (Boulton, 1978). Our paper summarizes the studies caried out, as part of the AECL waste management program, by the authors and associates on the development of design concepts for a vault situated in crystalline rocks of the type present in the Canadian Shield.The design studies have been carried out in three phases, the elements of which are described in Section 2.1 (also see Fig. 1). The general vault designs are presented in Section 2.2. These provide for emplacement of either immobilized fuel or solidified reprocessing wastes in a room-and-pillar facility at a depth of 1,000 m.Section 3 reviews the principal design considerations from the construction, operation and thermal-mechanical response aspects. The concepts have been studied in both temporal and spatial domains, and the requirements and responses assessed in each as appropriate.Section 4 briefly reviews the availability of relevant experience from previous major underground construction projects. Finally, in Section 5, brief comments are given regarding design-oriented research and development requirements."

The author maintains that selectivity in flotation depends in part on differences in rates of flotation. The rate of flotation should be directly proportional to the frequency of particle-bubble collisions. In this paper, it is suggested that floatable particles of the mineral must be distinguished from nonfloatable particles. Success in flotation is entirely a matter of selectivity. All minerals can be made to float. The problem is to make one mineral float and leave the others in the tails. For a typical ore, with all minerals naturally hydro-philic, a collector which is adsorbed by only one mineral and not at all by the others would give perfect separations. The hydrophobic, collector-coated mineral would separate cleanly from the remaining minerals. In practice, no such highly specific reagents are known. All standard collectors adsorb on most minerals to some extent, and selectivity then becomes a matter of extent of adsorption rather than adsorption on some minerals and not on others. Flotation is therefore a compromise process: if enough reagent is used to float all the desired mineral, the concentrate will be low grade; conversely, high grade concentrates can be attained only at low recovery. With many minerals coated with collector to varying degrees, selectivity appears to depend in part on each mineral floating at a different rate. The study of flotation kinetics is therefore a basic requirement to quantitative understanding of the process. Step 4: Selection of explosives and initiation system Various types of explosives are manufactured in India and a wide choice is available among them that include nitroglycerin based explosives, slurries, emulsions, ANFO (ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil) and heavy ANFO. The choice is also available between cartridged and bulk loading systems. In Indian mines, much importance is unduly given to the cost of explosives alone which is not conducive to optimization of blast design parameters. The concept of energy per meter of blasthole and the way in which the total explosive energy is partitioned between shock and heave is not considered in the prevailing practices. Besides, very little efforts are made to objectively evaluate the performance of explosives for a given site condition. Tailoring explosives is limited to changing the density of the bulk explosives. Cartridged explosives are still being extensively used in large operations where bulk explosives should be the preferred choice.

It is paramount that the stability of rock slopes be correctly accounted for under diverse operating and environmental conditions. Owing to different sources of uncertainty entailed in such stability problems, conventional deterministic approach through the calculation of a factor of safety (FOS) cannot reflect quantified uncertainties explicitly and sufficiently. Thus it is highly desirable to invoke the reliability approach to consider uncertainties in a systematic manner. Nowadays, the current design standards have an increasing tendency to ensure rock slope stability by pre-defining a target reliability index (or target probability of failure), viz., the reliability level of a rock slope is pre-set as a target to be satisfied. In such a situation and considering the fact that the FOS used as an indicator of slope performance still has a very wide acceptance, we focus on proposing an inverse-reliability-based methodology which aims at developing a two-fold indicator strategy, i.e., using the FOS and reliability together to deal with slope stability problems. The basic idea behind it is to utilize a so-called inverse first-order reliability method (IFORM) to directly calibrate the FOS provided the target reliability index has been given. In this way, the calibration scheme relating the FOS can be rationally done by not only incorporating uncertainties, but also satisfying a desired level of the prescribed reliability. Based on this, to make the IFORM computationally feasible and also reduce its computational cost, we introduce the response surface method (RSM) to generate a surrogate for the FOS-based limit state function (LSF), considering the lengthy and complicated form of the FOS in some recognized methods (e.g., within the framework of limit equilibrium). Distinguished from the existing RSMs that potential inadequacies may arise, we present an RSM based on a hybrid approach combining support vector machine (SVM; used as a regression technique) and uniform design (UD; pertaining to experimental design). Using a representative example of rock slope stability problem, we demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the developed methodology, during which the associated sensitivity study and further discussion are also performed. By dint of such a methodology, we can establish a link between the conventional deterministic approach and the reliability approach, where a logical and realistic framework is provided, for cases achieving the specified reliability, to assist in selecting the FOS which remains adequate for rock slope stability even in the face of uncertainty.

IN twinned crystals of the face-centered cubic metals the lattice of one twin is a mirror image of the other in a common twin boundary. When several twins appear within large grain in a sheet specimen, the twin one boundaries form a set of lines at the surface of the specimen which coincide with (111) planes of the large grain. Furthermore, for twins of the same orientation, these lines are parallel. Generally, the presence of identically oriented regions with straight parallel boundaries coinciding with a (111) plane of the surrounding crystal is strong evidence for identifying the island regions as twins of the parent crystal. However, Fig. 1, which shows the macrostructure of a large grain of copper with island regions that satisfy these conditions. is not an illustration of (111) twins. Since the reverse side of the specimen has much the same appearance, it was thought at first that these regions, which appear dark in the macrograph, actually were twins. According to X-ray data, however, these regions are second-order twins of the large crystal. With regard to their formation, these second-order twins formed by secondary recrystallization in a cube texture matrix. Growth occurred in the direction of the arrow (see Fig. 1) as the specimen moved slowly into a gradient temperature furnace as described previously.' Nucleation of the second-order twins occurred, therefore, on the ends facing opposite the arrow. If the origin of the second-order twins were due to repeated twinning, some first-order twin structure should be visible on these ends. This proved to be the case, as very small twins were readily found with the aid of a microscope, and probably could have been seen, in some instances, under ideal lighting conditions without aid of a microscope. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section view taken perpendicular to both the surface and the (111) trace of the parent crystal (visible as a straight boundary in Fig. 1) at the beginning point of growth of a second-order twin and where one first-order twin was relatively thick. In the micrograph, A is the large parent grain; B is the first-order twin of A; and C, which is a first-order twin of B; is a second-order twin of A. Between A and B and between B and C the major straight portions are traces of common (111) twin boundaries. The straight portion of boundary between A and C, however, is not a common crystallographic plane to the two lattices; it is a (111) plane of A and a (115) plane of C. Without considering the mechanism of twinning itself, the origin of the second-order twins may be accounted for in terms of repeated twinning and special growth characteristics. After each nucleation, a selective growth process can be thought of as favoring growth of the first-order twin in local spots only and favoring growth of the second-order twin to an extent comparable with that of the parent grain over relatively large areas in a way similar to that described for twinning in aluminum.' It has already been pointed out that the boundary between the large grain (A) and the second-order twin (C), which is responsible for the straight boundary portions in Fig. 1, involves a (111) plane of A and a (115) plane of C. The same combination of planes is not only possible in first-order twins, but actually appears quite frequently.3 Their prevalence in first-order twins and their presence here in second-order twins, together with the necessary occurrence of a large number of common lattice sites at the boundary, is an indication that this combination produces an "energy cusp"' boundary. (Energy cusp boundaries have been described by Shockley and Read.") The configuration of atoms near a {Ill), (115) boundary in first-order twins is of course different from the configuration near the same type of boundary in second-order twins. References 1 M. A novel sol ? gel (SG) synthesis procedure utilizing varying ratios of glycine and ethylene glycol to total metal cations has been developed to create high purity nanometer sized La0.65Sr3.5MnO3 powders. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) have confirmed that the crystallite sizes of such powders are ~ 20 nm, and the aggregate particle sizes vary between 100 to 300 nm. Mixing varying weight percents of SG LSM powders with commercially available Praxair LSM in a composite LSM/YSZ functionally graded cathode has been shown, through the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), to exhibit enhanced oxygen reduction kinetics vs. at conventional cathode materials.

The typical Vibrocompaction projects undertaken in the UAE are on reclaimed Sands. These Sands which are predominantly the crushable, calcareous, carbonate sands found locally as opposed to the more common quartz or silica sands that are featured in most design literature. The famous reclamations such as the iconic Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, often have specification for mitigation of liquefaction induced settlements, bearing capacity increases and total and differential settlement requirements. Often these performance targets are achieved by the means of achieving a particular relative density that are generally measured by a defined Cone Penetration Test, CPT targeting values of cone resistance (Qc), MPa at respective depth zones. In this paper some case studies are presented, where soil suitability for deep compaction by vibratory methods was firstly assessed for suitability using the Massarsch, 1991 compactability chart prior to the application of vibrocompaction and its subsequent evaluation. One such project named the Island Development required 17 to 23m depth of penetration only to treat the lower 5 to 6m of sand above rockhead as eventually the top 15m of sand will be further excavated to allow for the construction of basement. The paper will present pre and post CPT results, the results of initial site calibration trials and evaluation of the completed works.

In this country, petroleum is a rapidly wasting asset and an occasional appraisal of the amount remaining in the ground is a simple business procedure to safeguard the general welfare and the prosperity of the republic. The rumored danger of failure, in the near future, of the foreign supply on which we depend in constantly increasing amounts makes the immcdiatc review of our available reserves the more imperative. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the graund. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, oonsulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through subcommittees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. Detailed operating results on processing seven coals having moisture ranging from 24 to 62 pct, formulas and data for calculating performance of large units, and general conclusions on the problem of drying fine coal are presented.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

In an attempt to better understand the impact that large mining shots will have on verifying compliance with the international, worldwide, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT, no nuclear explosion tests), a series of seismic and videographic experiments has been conducted during the past two years at the Black Thunder Coal Mine. Personnel from the mine and Los Alamos National Laboratory have cooperated closely to design and perform experiments to produce results with mutual benefit to both organizations. This paper will summarize our activities, highlighting the unique results of each.

This paper describes a metallographic investigation of the influence of tungsten or molybdenum additions upon the transformation and precipitation reactions occurring in Co-rich Co-Cr alloys. It is shown that tungsten has little effect upon the a-ß transformation temperature range, while molybdenum tends to raise it. Both elements tend to promote the formation of ? phase, molybdenum being more potent in this respect than tungsten. HIGH temperature alloys, that is, alloys which have load-carrying ability at elevated temperatures, have been developed at an increasing rate during the past few years. This has resulted from the requirements in the design of modern aircraft engines. Although many alloys of this type are available, they have been developed on an empirical basis. Metallurgists do not have a clear understanding of the phases or structures that are responsible for these high temperature properties. In order to determine why these alloys possess this particular ability, a project was started at Battelle Memorial Institute with the object of learning more about the fundamental factors which promote high temperature strength in alloys. This study was to include a correlation of microstructure and the high temperature properties of Vitallium, an alloy which is widely used for high temperature service. Vitallium is a complex material both from the standpoint of composition and microstructure. Consequently, it was necessary to obtain informa- tion regarding the phase relationships in this alloy. The Co-Cr binary diagram was determined as the first phase of this investigation.' A second paper described the effects of iron, nickel, or nitrogen on the reactions occurring in the Co-rich end of this system.' The present paper covers a continuation of this investigation in which the effects of tungsten or molybdenum on the reactions occurring in Co-rich, Co-Cr-base alloys were determined. Preparation of 'rest Materials Two series of ternary Co-Cr-base alloys, representing Co-Cr ratios of 80:20 and 68:32 ( Cr x 100 =20 and 32 ) , were prepared containing ( Co + Cr = up to 6 pct W and up to 12 pct Mo. Melting stock consisted of electrolytic Co, electrolytic Cr, 99.9 pct pure W, and 99.9 pct pure Mo. Table I lists the chemical analyses of these materials. Intensive exploration of the Archaean ultra mafic sequence bordering the Kambalda dome has resulted in the discovery of at least ten dis- tinct areas of nickel sulphide mineralisation subsequent to the initial drill intersection in January, 1966. Sulphide ore reserves to June 30, 1972 were 19.36 million tonnes at 3.3% nickel after mining of 3.0 million tonnes at 3:7%,nickel since production commenced in March, 1967. About 75% of contained nickel metal reserves occur in sulphide concentrations located at the base of the-ultramafic sequence, in contact with underlying meta-tholeiitic basalt. The remaining reserve occurs in concentrations of sulphides within the ultramafic sequence, usually within 100 metres of the underlying contact and typically in proximity to contact mineralisation. These hanging wall orebodies are smaller, contain significantly lower con- centrations of sulphide, and generally exhibit higher Ni:S ratios than underlying contact ore- bodies. The majority of contact sulphides concentr- ations form narrow, elongate, north north-west trending bodies, closely coincident with fault bounded depressions in the contact. Detailed study of the Lunnon Shoot ore environment in- dicates that it was a locus of crustal failure during, and subsequent to, emplacement of ultra- mafic rocks. Resultant structures parallel and

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. A description is given of the development of a process for making low sulphur steel on furnaces fired with 2 1/2 pet sulphur oil. Slag and metal are analyzed at melt. Slag weight is estimated. A simple method for calculating necessary lime additions for making 0.025 and 0.035 pct sulphur steel is given. DURING the last 15 years John Summers & Sons have been confronted increasingly by the problem of producing a low sulphur steel from high sulphur materials. The principles adopted, the processes used, the data collected on a furnace specially set aside to study this problem, and speculation on future developments are dealt with in this paper. This study is limited to two melting shops which make sheet steel only, of the following analysis: C, 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.33; S, 0.04, 0.035, 0.03, and 0.025; and P, 0.02 and 0.015. All the processes described have reference to the manufacturing of this steel and are not necessarily applicable, without modification, to other steels. The raw materials used are given in Table I. Development of Process About 1934, Schenck's work on phosphorus was applied to frame quantitative rules for the removal of phosphorus, with great success. We could however, neither in our own work nor in the voluminous literature, find any assistance to frame quantitative furnace rules to remove sulphur. Perhaps, we should have persevered with Schenck's outstanding chapter on sulphur in The Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, but we missed the importance of one (Ss) sentence on p. 478. "Evidently this ratio -------- is [S] the important quantity to be considered from the point of view of chemical reaction; it is clear that the sulphur content of the steel alone, as frequently given in the literature cannot suffice for judging the success of the reaction unless special details are given regarding the sulphur charge and the amount of slag."' We were not however very successful in getting values for Schenck's "n" that agreed with (S) arrived at by our direct analysis. [S] In addition to Schenck's work much attention was given to V value. The formula selected for V was: (SCaO) — 1.57 (2 P2O5) (S SiO2) After plotting many charges a curve was obtained, based upon the relationship between the percentage sulphur in the finished steel and V value, Fig. 1. For a long time this was used as standard with about a 60 to 70 pct success on producer-gas fired furnaces, if all uprising scrap was used and no bought scrap used. An inspection of this curve shows clearly that it is not a quantitative manufacturing process, and that it was not sure enough to go to the trouble and expense of doing stage analysis for P,O,,
