Improve ground control in longwall gate entries by developing a practical method for evaluating longwall pillar designs. Background Longwalls have emerged as the most important technology to be applied to underground mining since the continuous mining machine. Longwall mines currently produce more than 30 pct of all the underground coal mined in the United States, up from less than 5 pct just 15 years ago. Safe longwall mining depends on maintaining ground control in the gate entries, the lifelines that provide access to the longwall face. In multientry retreat mining as practiced in the United States, rows of chain pillars are left to protect the gate entries (see figure 1). Chain pillars are subject to severe and complex abutment loads during the process of longwall panel extraction. The design of these pillars is often the single most important element in gate entry ground control and has been the subject of intensive Bureau of Mines research.

A mine fire or roof collapse may necessitate the reversal of main fans to isolate the fire or provide an escapeway. Hence, to assist the mine operator in estimating the flow and pressure during reversal, Engineers International Inc. conducted a laboratory and field study of the reverse performance characteristics of main mine fans. Laboratory tests were performed using a 2.4-m (96-in.) diam vane axial fan to establish the forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions. Subse¬quently, a field test was conducted in a Colorado oil shale mine during which two 2-m (79-in.) diam fans were reversed. The data obtained indicate that reverse performance characteristics depend on the blade angle and the hub-to-tip ratio. The quantity in the reverse mode ranged from 30% to 65% less than in the forward mode, and the static pressure was directly proportional to the square of the quantity.

ON p. 499 of the December issue Of MINING AND METAL-LURGY plans were announced for a memorial to en-gineers who died in overseas service during the World War and a gift to the University of Louvain on behalf of the engineers of America. In this connection it is proposed to erect a memorial tablet giving the names. of engineers who died in the foreign service. Members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives, so far as they are known, are listed below. It will be much appreciated if notice be given of any omissions and also if the name of some surviving relative be supplied in each case. The effects of aeration on an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite were studied and their results correlated with flotation tests using xanthates as collectors. The effects of copper activation and of pH variation were determined and possible mechanisms postulated. PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents,3 or by starch.' The object of this work was to study the floatabil-ity of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH. Preparation of the Pyrrhotite Sample: It was desirable that the highest grade of pyrrhotite obtainable be used for this experiment, since the presence of other minerals could affect the surface properties.5 However, no pyrrhotite was available as crystals, and massive deposits of hydrothermal origin commonly contain considerable amounts of chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite concentrate was, therefore, prepared from a sulphide deposit occurring near Aitkin, Minn. The deposit is of pyrometamorphic nature consistirlg mainly of pyrrhotite and pyrite with graphite, silicates, and carbonates as gangue. The ore, already crushed through 3 mesh when received, was screened at 65 mesh and the undersize discarded. The oversize was crushed through rolls, and then stage-ground dry in an Abbe porcelain mill, the —65 mesh portion being screened out after every 15 min of grinding until all the material passed through this size. The ground product was then concentrated with a drum-type dry magnetic separator. The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and then demagnetized. The final product was split in a Jones splitter and stored in air-tight bottles. Microscopic examination of the concentrate showed that it was relatively clean and free of pyrite, locked particles, and gangue. By means of the krypton gas adsorption method," the specific surface was determined to be 3000 cm2 per g. The chemical and screen analyses of the final concentrate are given in Tables I and II respectively. It is a well-recognized fact that the oxidation of some sulphide ores during stockpiling, grinding, and conditioning affects their flotation behavior. The problem of oxidation may become serious in the case of pyrrhotite, since this is known to be more easily oxidized than many other sulphides. To ascertain the extent of oxidation, an experiment was carried out by aerating an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite with air, oxygen, and nitrogen as follows. A 300-g sample of pyrrhotite in 2700 ml of water was agitated and simultaneously aerated in a Fager-gren-type laboratory flotation machine. A Precision wet test meter was connected to the air inlet valve, the flow rate of the gas being kept constant at 0.3 cu ft per min throughout the experiment. Samples of approximately 30 ml each were taken from the cell at 0, 4, 10, 20, 35, 60, and 90 min. After the pH was taken, each sample was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed for total iron and sulphur. The iron was determined colorimetrically by the thioglycolate method using a green filter.' The filtrate was oxidized with bromine to convert all of the soluble sulphur compounds into sulphate and this was determined with a Parr turbidimeter." When aeration tests were made in alkaline circuit, calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide was added at regular intervals to maintain a constant pH. A similar procedure was followed in an experiment to determine the abstraction of copper. ion by pyrrhotite. In this case various quantities of cupric chloride were added. The filtrate from each sample taken was analyzed for copper, total iron, and sulphur. The carbamate method with a green filter was used for the copper analysis,' since this method could tolerate a considerable amount of iron in the solution. A pneumatic cell, made from a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel, was used for this experiment. The detail of the assemblage has been described elsewhere." In the present work a stainless steel baffle was inserted in the cell. This baffle overcame the tendency for the coarse pyrrhotite particles to be swirled around the wall of the cell and thus fail to collect in the froth. A 50-g sample of pyrrhotite was added to the cell which contained 260 ml of water. When pretreat-ment of the sample was desired, reagents, such as activator and pH regulator, were then added and the pulp was conditioned for a specified conditioning time. Prior to the addition of the collector approximately 15 ml of the solution were removed for pH measurement and for iron and sulphur analyses. Copper when used as activator was also determined. Collector and frother were then added and the pulp was conditioned for an additional 2 min. Air was admitted to the cell and the froth removed. The separation required from 4 to 6 min, depending on the characteristics of the froth. The float and non-float products were filtered, dried, weighed, and assayed for iron.

Novel rare earth boron icosahedral compounds are investigated as potential high temperature thermoelectric materials. REB50-type compounds and REB22C2N compounds were synthesized and the thermoelectric properties measured. Seebeck coefficients in excess of 200 V/K are observed at temperatures above 1000 K for the REB50-type compounds. Strikingly, n-type behavior was observed for REB22C2N. Up to now, non-doped B12 icosahedral compounds have all been p-type. The discovery of an n-type compound is extremely important in terms of the potential development of this class of compounds as viable thermoelectric materials. Low thermal conductivities of < 0.03 W/cm/K at room temperature was observed for these rare earth boron cluster compounds.

The nucleation process for y&apos;, Ni3Ti, is shou&apos;n to change from heterogeneous to uniform as the undercooling within the phase boundary increases. As unifornz nucleation beconres copious, (100) alignment is observed in the early stages of aging; howecer. whether or not the alignment is due to spinodal decomposition could not be determined. The presence oi a large-scale reversible segregation of titanium and not the intermediate precipitate y&apos; may be the cause of the initial strengthening in this alloy system and the discrete regions detected magnetically by Ben-Israel and Fine. Evidence is presented for the role of dislocations in the formation at long aging tines oJ the equilibrium precipitate . ThE nickel-rich portion of the Ni-Ti phase diagram consists of a terminal fcc solid solution of titanium in nickel called y.&apos; For temperatures below 1290°C if the solubility limit is exceeded and the temperature is high enough, the excess titanium will combine with nickel to form q, Ni3Ti, a four-layer hcp ordered structure with stacking sequence ABAC."~ Since a change in structure is involved, formation of q is slow and a metastable precipitate referred to as y&apos; forms. This metastable precipitate is an ordered cubic phase in the unconstrained state having a structure similar to Cu3Au (LIZ) with the composition Ni,Ti."&apos;5 From X-ray studies,8, 7 the following sequence is indicated for the precipitation reaction at low temperatures: 1) The appearance of satellites around low-index diffraction spots and splitting of high-index spots, indicating the formation of a slightly tetragonal phase in an imperfectly periodic arrangement. The tetragonal phase is y&apos; or the depleted matrix, depending on the volume fractions of matrix and precipitate (and hence, the alloy composition); tetragonality apparently arises from coherency strains. 2) The appearance of diffraction spots from the equilibrium second phase, q. Ben-Israel and Fine&apos;" used magnetic methods to measure the changes in matrix composition during aging, and to estimate the precipitate composition in a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy. They observed that the alloy, solution-treated at 1270°C and quenched, contained heterogeneities with discrete compositions which gradually vanished upon aging. It was suggested that y&apos; may initially form as a defect structure with several possible compositions deficient in titanium as compared to Ni3Ti; the composition Ni3Ti develops with prolonged aging. The initial composition was Ni6Ti which would require a very large deviation in stoichiometry for y&apos;. It was noted that at 700°C the precipitation reaction was 80 pct complete after 2 hr and that the volume fraction of second phase was 0.2 after 1 hr. Mihalisin and Decker&apos; suggested that the equilibrium precipitate, besides being nucleated at grain boundaries, could also form at stacking faults. ~errick" examined the formation of in Ni-Cr-Ti, and suggested that a collapsed vacancy cluster within y&apos; acted as a nucleus for intragranular q at high temperatures, 820" and 900°C. After long aging times at lower temperatures, 650" and 750°C, diffraction patterns taken from regions containing ribbons of stacking faults showed spots associated with q. Aging greatly enhances the mechanical properties of these alloys, even at high temperatures, and the metastable precipitate y&apos; is thought to be responsible.&apos; At 600°C the hardness of a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy increases rapidly during the first 20 hr of aging and continues to increase slowly thereafter.&apos;" At 700°C the hardness reaches a maximum at 1 to 2 hr and then decreases.l1 In this paper the kinetics of formation of y&apos; and the mechanism of transformation to in a Ni-Ti alloy are described. Evidence is presented that suggests that large-scale regions of titanium segregation are present initially and these may have an important influence on the initial strengthening of the alloy: these regions may be the heterogeneities detected by Ben-Israel and Fine. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy was prepared by vacuum melting. Its chemical analysis is given in Table I. A 0.007-in.-thick strip was sandwiched between foils of the alloy and placed in an open Vycor tube with titanium chips (to get oxygen) and solution-treated for ; hr at 1150°C in a Globar Furnace under a flowing argon atmosphere. Following a quench into an ice-brine mixture at -5" to -2"C, a sample to be aged at temperatures up to and including 700°C was sealed in an evacuated Vycor capsule before being put into a fused salt bath. Aging above 700°C was carried out on bare samples in a salt bath. Two methods were devised and evaluated for quantitatively measuring the amount of oleic acid on flotation products and in flotation waters. One method involved use of an organic solvent to remove carbon-l4-tagged oleic acid from mineral surfaces and flotation water phases with subsequent radio-metric analysis of the extracts. Studies showed this method to be slow and subject to large variations in accuracy and reproducibility. In the second procedure, tagged oleic acid was measured directly on the surfaces of dried mineral products. Oleic acid in the water phase was determined by adsorbing it on fine mineral, drying, and radiometric counting. Quantitative analysis of oleic acid on flotation products from bench-scale flotation tests with synthetic mixtures of ore minerals and quartz and with natural ores showed this method to be fast, accurate, and reproducible.

"INTRODUCTION During the 6-year period, 1940-45, 481,485,000 gross tons of iron ore was shipped from the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin mines of the Lake Superior district. Approximately 367,000,000 tons, or 76 percent, of this ore was shipped from open-cut mines. The production of this large tonnage of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the Lake Superior district during the recent war was an outstanding achievement. It is questionable whether this record-breaking tonnage of iron ore, vitally needed for the successful prosecution of the war, could have been produced without the modern equipment and mining methods used in the district, The transportation of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the district is the most important phase of the mining cycle. Although some of the mines still use rail haulage advantageously, this method of haulage has been replaced at most nines with motor-truck haulage or a combination of motor-truck and belt-conveyor haulage.SCOPEThe transportation of iron ore in this report covers (1) power shovels, (2) rail haulage, (3) trucks, (4) belt conveyors, (5) shipping pockets, (6) accident statistics, and (7) safety rules pertaining to open-cut transporta¬tion. The purpose of the report is to discuss briefly and disseminate to the mining industry the modern methods, equipment, and safety practices used in transporting iron ore at the open-cut mines of the district.The 25 open-cut mines covered herein, located in the Marquette, Cuyuna, and Mesabi iron ranges of Michigan and Minnesota, shipped approximately 44,000,000 tons of iron in 1945, which amounted to 72 percent of the open-cut iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district."

Some measurements of the rate of loss of hydrogen from cylinders of iron and steel are analyzed in terrns of a trapping theory. The apeement is encozcraging and gives rise to estimates for the density of traps in the metal. Furthermore, the results appear to be consistent with the assumption that the diffusion constant D for the steady flux of hydrogen through iron lies on the extrapolation of the linear curve (log D us 1/T) obtained at higher temperatures. IT has been shown in a previous paper1 that the literature relating to hydrogen diffusion in steels contains sufficient evidence to invalidate the application of Fick&apos;s laws to hydrogen diffusion in steel at low temperatures. To account for the deviations from simple diffusion behavior a trapping theory was developed, and the fundamental laws modified accordingly. In the present paper, new data on the evolution of hydrogen from long cylinders are presented, and together with some published data are examined in terms of the requirements of the theory.&apos; Properties of solutions of the basic equations derived previously1 and appropriate to the present experimental conditions are outlined in the first section as they determine the form in which the experimental data must be presented for a comparison of theory and experiment. Two new solutions not previously reported have been derived as described in the Appendix. The experiments and treatment of data are then given in Sections 2 and 3 and the results are discussed in Section 4. 1) THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The hydrogen-diffusion theory1 applied in this paper postulated that lattice-dissolved hydrogen at a concentration C diffuses randomly in accordance with Fick&apos;s first law, but that the lattice contains a uniform density N of traps which can capture and delay hydrogen atoms. kC atoms are trapped per second in a region containing unit concentration of vacant traps while p are released per second in a region containing unit concentration of occupied traps. On this basis it was shown (Eq. [30] of Ref. 1) that, when local changes in the lattice-dissolved concentration C are slow enough for equilibrium to be established with the traps, the system is represented in dimensionless form by the equation:

The generation and evaluation of solutions to body force problems is of extreme interest to the geotechnical profession, as all natural stress states must necessarily include some contribution from the weight of the material. In this chapter the elastic solution for the stress field around a circular, horizontal tunnel at an arbitrary depth beneath the surface of a half-space is reexamined. The influences of body force, initial stress, and free surface proximity are examined and related to in-situ cases. The solution as presented deals only with an isotropically elastic medium; this medium is further considered only in a half-space configuration. It is readily apparent that these restrictions impose severe limitations if analogies are attempted with in-situ cases where geologic discontinuities, inhomogeneities, and irregular boundaries exist. The question might be raised as to the propriety of geotechnically oriented researchers even considering such idealized conditions. There is, however, much to be gained from study of such solutions. The lack of geologic discontinuities and inhomogeneities allows the investigator to separate and leisurely examine such parameters as are included in the solution, without worry of interrelationships of a host of other parameters. Further, elastic solutions have had extensive usage prior to the development of such techniques as the finite-element solution. It is interesting to compare body force solutions with the external field solutions which in the past have been used for design purposes. Finally, the exact solution may be used to verify the accuracy of the finite-element type of solution. The mathematical solution on which this chapter is based was originally developed by R. D. Mindlin.l Because of the complexity and length of the solution, no attempt was made to determine the resultant stress fields until the advent of the present-day high-speed digital computer. How-

Service failures in brass condenser tubes are often due to corrosion. One of the commonest types of corrosion reveals a surface structure of redeposited copper.&apos; The study of the effect of alloy addition agents in preventing this kind of corrosion has received impetus from the extensive publication of Bengough and May.2 The mechanism of such inhibition gauged from immersion corrosion,2 cell corrosion,3 and electrolytic potential4 measurements is controversial. This controversy may be attributed in part to a lack of definite knowledge5 of the actual nature of the initial films formed in corrosion experiments. In our own corrosion work on copper and 70-30 brass this lack became apparent and necessitated an examination of surface films by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. The present paper is but an introduction to the subject of inhibition and reports the structure of films formed in active corrodents. Experimental Procedure The arsenical coppers and brasses used in this investigation were made by one of the writers* in the plant of the Revere Copper and Brass Co. at Rome, N. Y. Standard commercial melting practice was followed. O.F.H.C. copper and electrolytic zinc were used and all arsenic additions were made by additions of a master copper alloy. The final analyses are given in Table I. Likewise, the extrusion, cold-rolling, and intermediate anneals employed followed standard usage. Final heat-treatments were given to all materials to produce a similar grain size (0.035 to 0.045 mm. for brass and 0.015 to 0.025 for copper) for the alloys containing various percentages of arsenic. Samples 1/2 by M by 1/4 in. were cut from sheet material resurfaced and finished with 0000 metal-lographic papers. The surfaces were all degreased in alcohol and benzine before immersion. After immersion in the corrodent, they were washed gently in tap water, dipped first in alcohol and then in pure benzine and allowed to dry in the diffraction apparatus. "Over the years, the decline of high grade ores have become an increasing problem in the global mining industry. As such, techniques and chemistries must change in order to continue to meet the market demand and quality. Reverse cationic flotation of quartz and silicates is one of the most important techniques for generating the industry standard product from minerals such as iron and phosphate ores. Amine collectors are the global standard in such processes. However, as the ore quality continues to decline so must the chemistry change to meet the change in ore composition. This paper will focus on the introduction and full scale application of a novel amine collector towards a cleaner flotation process in phosphate beneficiation with Crago process. The results suggests the collector is capable of improving the phosphate recovery, in this cleaner circuit, to approximately 94% with minimal sensitivity to the everyday changes in feed grade.INTRODUCTION The days of mining high grade minerals are long gone, but the demand continues to increase. Phosphate ore, for example, is most dominantly demanded from the agriculture industry as a fertilizer component (i.e. diammonium phosphate, DAP) (FAO, 2014). Some literature suggests that global food production must increase by approximately 70% by 2050 (Cordell, 2009). It is also suggested that the peak global phosphorus production will occur around the year 2033, which is the period at which the easily accessible reserves have been depleted. Currently, phosphorus is commonly mined with a BPL (Bone Phosphate of Lime) concentration of 12-20% and a remainder typically being gangue minerals such as silica, clays, metal oxides, calcareous minerals, and carbonaceous minerals. These gangue components can lead to various negative processing and utilization consequences. Calcium, from carbonaceous minerals, is problematic due to the elevated levels of sulfuric acid required to convert the phosphate rock to the acid form (SRI Consulting, 2009). Calcium can also lead to elevated dosages of flotation reagents due to the desire of the fatty acid to coordinate to calcium minerals. Carbonate leads to increased levels of foam during the wet acid process. Silica is associated with the level of insols (acid insolubles), which must be less than 10% in the final concentrate that will be transferred to the chemical plant for acidification. Phosphate ore can generally be classified as carbonaceous or siliceous (El-Shall, 2003). Siliceous ores are commonly processed through various sizing steps followed by multi-staged flotation (Figure 1) (FIPR, 2014 & Güven, 2010). Though the higher grade phosphate pebble is declining, many mines are still able to size good enough to produce some amount of such pebble. Unlike most metal flotation processes where grinding is a necessity for an optimal process, Florida phosphate flotation does not generally require aggressive grinding and can typically operate at 0.1-1.0 mm. The rougher flotation step applies pH modification to achieve the optimal pH of 8.8-9.3 followed by conditioning with a fatty acid type collector, which builds a hydrophobic waxy layer on the surface of the particle to assist in the flotation. This generally achieves higher than 85% recovery of a product with 50-60% BPL and 15-30% insols. Unfortunately, DAP production generally requires 3.5 tons of phosphate rock containing greater than 63% BPL to produce 1 ton of phosphoric acid (ArgusMedia, 2014). Thus, further purification is required to achieve the grade by the chemical plant for fertilizer production. After the fatty acid is scrubbed off the phosphate particles using sulfuric acid (pH 2.5-3.5), the pH is generally operationally readjusted to 6.5-7.2 by washing with “fresh” water. A second collector is applied prior to the cleaner, which is a reverse cationic flotation process. This collector is typically a cationic amine based reagent, which should have an affinity for silica containing mineral"

RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

"The results of preliminary work on the modeling and measurement of the heat transfer coefficients of metal/mold interfaces is reported. The system investigated is the casting of uranium in graphite molds. The motivation for the work is primarily to improve the accuracy of process modeling of prototype mold designs at the Los Alamos Foundry. The evolution in design of a suitable mold for unidirectional solidification is described, illustrating the value of simulating mold designs prior to use. Experiment indicated a heat transfer coefficient of 2 kW/m /K both with and without superheat. It was possible to distinguish between solidification due to the mold and that due to radiative heat loss. This permitted an experimental estimate of the emissivity, ~ = 0.2, of the solidified metal.IntroductionA feature that distinguishes casting processes from welding processes is the presence of an interface with a low heat transfer coefficient between the mold and the casting. Especially when chill casting, the interface delays the start of solidification and increases freezing times significantly. By comparison welds can be assumed to have a very high heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient controls such phenomena as folds and laps on the surface of castings which can be crucial to the acceptability of a casting. The time delay for the start of solidification influences the occurrence of cold shut defects. The standard mold material for uranium casting is high quality graphite which is an excellent refractory when used in vacuum and coated with a refractory wash. Graphite is an effective chill material and has a thermal diffusivity approximately twice that of uranium. Experience has shown that practicable superheat without mold pre-heat is not sufficient for avoiding cold shut defects when casting in graphite molds.TheoryIt is possible to calculate the position of the freeze front s, as a function of time, t, the superheat and interface heat transfer coefficient, h, [1]. However, the value of h cannot be obtained explicitly. A FUNDAMENTAL investigation of the mecha-nism of the ordering reaction and of the accompanying changes in properties has been undertaken, since an extensive study of this process could well contribute to the knowledge of phase transitions in alloys. Cobalt-platinum alloys were chosen for the study since they exhibit interesting and unusual permanent magnet properties.1,2. In addition, the ordering reaction in cobalt-platinum alloys is a convenient one to study experimentally because of the high maximum ordering temperature, the large difference in the X-ray scattering power of cobalt and platinum atoms, and the relative ease with which the alloys can be plastically worked into wire and strip. In the early stages of this study, it became apparent that the published phase diagrams&apos;, &apos; of the cobalt-platinum system contained questionable features, in the region of 40 to 60 atomic pct Co, which were considered in another publication by the authors.4 That portion of the research reported elsewhere on the equilibrium states of cobalt-platinum alloys does not confirm the presence of a previously reported, high temperature disordered tetragonal phase and a low temperature body-centered cubic phase. On the other hand, the structure of the ordered phase is face-centered tetragonal with an atomic distribution analogous to that of CuAu.4 This lattice forms from the disordered face-centered cubic phase in such an orientation that the <100> directions are parallel to the <100> direc-tions of the disordered phase. At compositions other than the ideal 50 atomic pct the ordered phase can exist in equilibrium at high temperatures with the disordered phase. A Widmanstatten pattern of plate-like particles of the ordered phase parallel to (110) planes of the disordered matrix is observed when an initially disordered alloy is held at these temperatures. The temperature range of the two-phase region has been determined for three alloys by X-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic examination, and electrical resistivity measurements, and these results are incorporated with some of those of Gebhardt and Köster in the revised phase diagram of fig. 1. "Czochralski pulling has been a very widely used process for growing single crystals for electronic and optical applications. Dopant segregation can significantly degrade the quality and yield of single crystals. We have used the floating-crucible technique for segregation control in Czochralski pulling, our floating crucibles being unique in that the melt passageway is very long. As such, dopant back diffusion is suppressed, even when the cross-section of the melt passageway has to be relatively large to help the melt go through or when the pulling rate is very low. Single crystals of model materials K-doped NaN03 and Pb-doped Sn have been grown with very uniform dopant concentrations. IntroductionSingle crystals of electronic and optical materials are often doped with a small amount of impurities to develop required physical properties, e.g., P and B in Si for n-type and p-type semiconductors, respectively, and Nd in YAG lasers. Dopant segregation can result in nonuniform physical properties, thus degrading the quality and yield of the resultant crystals.Figure 1 is an illustration of the conventional Czochralski process for crystal growth. Several techniques have been developed to control dopant segregation in Czochralski pulling, including the push-pull technique (1,2), the drop-pull technique (3-7) and the floating-crucible technique (8-13). The first two techniques require precise sensing devices and feedback control systems to keep the feeding rate equal to the pulling rate. The last technique is simple since the feeding rate is automatically equal to the pulling rate."

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

In addition to classifying bulk material, vibration screens are commonly used in dewatering. However, the lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. First, in this report, the dewatering of bulk material are shown based on a physical model. Because of tile oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. A comparison between dewatering theory and practice are shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements conducted on a vibration screen demonstrated that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibility of improving vibration dewatering is described.
