The Southwest Antioch Oil Field located in T2&3N - R2&3W, Garvin County, Okla., was discovered in February, 1946, by The Globe Oil & Refining Co. and The Vickers Petroleum Co. at their Melinda Gibson No. 1. Oil production was encountered at a depth of 6,525 ft in 14 ft of lower Pennsyl-vanian sandstone. The producing sand, locally called the ."Gibson" or "Third Deese," is a sand bar deposit strung along the west flank of the Pauls Valley uplift in a northwest-southeast direction. The oil reservoir is defined to the east by the edge of sand deposition along the uplift and to the west by the gradation of sand into shale. Within the Antioch Unit, the sand dips from 150 to 400 ft per mile southwesterly and has a pay thickness varying from 10 to 55 ft and averaging 28 ft. Several areas of Gibson production have been developed, including the Katie pool on the south, the Elmore Area of the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool. the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool proper, the Southwest Maysville pool and the New Hope pool on the north. Production extends over a belt 22 miles long by about two miles wide and is continuous except into the Katie and New Hope pools. It appears that drilling will soon prove these intervening areas productive. To March 1, 1950, approximately 18,000 acres have been developed with 450 Gibson wells. It is likely this count will ultimately reach 32.000 acres with 800 wells. RESERVOIR The natural production of oil from the Gibson reservoir is primarily due to solution gas expansion though gravity also plays a part. There is no indication of water drive or evidence that an initial gas cap existed. Gibson oil has a stock tank gravity of 43" API and was saturated at the original reservoir pressure of 2.925 psi. It contained 1,3440 cu ft of gas per bbl in solution and had a high shrinkage of 70 per cent. Connate water amounts to 15 per cent. Reservoir temperature is 130°F. Porosity averages 15.5 per cent and permeability ranges from less than one md to over 1.000. Based on meacurement of 400 core plugs from 15 wells, 78 per cent of the permeabilities fell within the 10 to 1,000 md bracket and averaged l67. This study, of the liquidus temperatures and densities of molten alloys of zinc and aluminum was made as part of a broader investigation on refining of scrap aluminum. One of the methods of refining involves the separation of liquid and solid phases by gravity segregation and by filtration. More accurate data were required on the liquidus temperatures and the densities of molten' mixtures of the metals than were available in the technical literature. New data on the liquidus curve were obtained by thermal analysis. The new temperatures are, for the most part) somewhat higher than those reported previously by other investigators. The density of molten mixtures of zinc and aluminum were found to be less than would be calculated by assuming that the two metals occupy the same respective molal volumes in solution as they do as pure metals.

Robertson Diasol have developed a spectral gamma-gamma tool fully able to withstand borehole conditions. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

The glass insert stressmeter, or photoelastic stressmeter, is an instrument designed to determine stress changes occurring in rocks. It has several potential advantages over other such devices in that it is a biaxial device, it is simple and it is cheap to make. The object of this study was to assess the behaviour of the meter under biaxial loads and to examine some of the problems associated with measurement and interpretation of the fringe pattern. This assessment has been carried out by comparing theoretical and laboratory behaviour of the meter. It has been shown that: a) There are certain optimum measuring points in the meter at which measurements should be made for best accuracy. The position of the points depends on the ratio, n, of the biaxial stresses. b) The meter&apos;s sensitivity can be assumed to be independent of the rock modulus E provided that the rock modulus is < 2.5 x 106 psi and not, as previous workers have assumed, if E < 5 x 106 psi. c) There are several methods of separating the principal stresses; some of these are unsatisfactory. A new method is proposed and discussed. d) The meter sensitivity decreases as the ratio of the biaxial stresses approaches unity; the accuracy thus also decreases. e) The axes of symmetry of the fringe pattern give an excellent indication of applied stress direction. f) Laboratory calibrations are in good agreement with theory. The glass insert or photoelastic stressmeter is an instrument designed to determine stress changes occurring in rocks. This stressmeter has been described in detail.l,2 Basically it is a hollow glass cylinder that has at one end a light source and filters producing circularly polarized light. The glass cylinder and source are grouted into a borehole in rock and the face of the cylinder is viewed through a quarter wave plate and an analyser. If, after installation, a stress change occurs in the rock, then a distinct colored isochro-matic fringe pattern is seen in the meter. The fringe order at any point in the meter can be determined by counting the fringes and measuring the fractional fringe orders by the Tardy compensation method. The relation between the fringe order at any point and the applied stress change can be determined either by calculation or by calibration. The object of this study was to assess the behavior of this stressmeter under biaxial loading conditions and to examine some of the problems of interpretation of the fringe pattern. THEORY Hiramatsu et a14 have determined the stress distribution in a hollow cylindrical inclusion in an elastic host material when subject to uniaxial stress. Using this solution, the biaxial case of stress p in the x direction and stress q in the y direction (Fig. 1) can be solved by superposition. This has been done in Appendix 1. On-land waste rock dumps at BHP Billiton Base MetalsÆ Island Copper Mine (ICM) near the northern end of Vancouver Island, B.C. continue to discharge ARD. These waters, which amount to approximately five million cubic metres each year, are injected into a three-layer, meromictic pit lake for treatment. The top layer is brackish water, replenished by each yearÆs rainfall (amounting to nearly 2 m/year). This top layer of water must meet effluent permit limits for heavy metals. This water eventually exfiltrates through a æbeachÆ waste rock dump, which is 93 per cent submerged along the north shore of Rupert Inlet. The middle and bottom layers of the Pit Lake are saline and currently oxic (2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) and anoxic (0.03 mg/L dissolved oxygen), respectively. Spreading of a liquid fertilizer every ten days throughout the top layer results in plankton and bacterial blooms that scavenge zinc, copper and cadmium out of this layer eventually to become mineral sediment in the bottom of the pit lake. Adsorption on planktonic skeletons and mineral precipitates also scavenges these dissolved metals from the middle and bottom layers to form bottom sediment. Sulfate reduction has recently begun in the bottom sediments. Diagenetic processes in the bottom sediments will eventually transform most of the dissolved heavy metals into insoluble sulfides. Cycling of ferric iron between the sediment and the water column and back seems to contribute dramatically to the biogeochemical metal removal processes. This biogeochemical system serves to maintain the top-layer water well within permit limits for discharge to the environment.

At 5:30 p.m. a social hour was held for all RMCMI registrants on the lawn area south of the Gondola Lift House. This was followed by a western steak fry and dancing to the country western band, "The Cat&apos;s Night Out". MORNING SESSION Tuesday, June 29,1982 RMCMI golfers came out in force for a shot-gun start of the Championship Golf Tournament at Vail Municipal Golf Course which began its first session at 7:30 a.m. followed by a second at 1:15 p.m. The tournament was headed by William Carpender, chairman and his committee members Gary Bennewitz, Jr. and Gene Christmann. RMCMI members were treated to early morning rolls and coffee in the Conference Center preceding a showing of the RMCMI slide/tape program on enhancing the image of coal mining, by telling the story of the Institute. Following this, the meeting was called to order by President McKeever at 8:30 a.m. when he introduced Mr. Carl Terzian who presented a workshop entitled "Sure You Have an Image - But What Kind?". MR. McKEEVER: Good morning Carl. I see you&apos;re ready to address this bright and busy tail audience. One of the things that I really want to point out this morning and I knew we would have a second chance with Carl Terzian but Carl is someone that will leave a good lasting impression on you and what he will hopefully be talking about, as I remember, is that what he&apos;s saying here can be used personally, or for company, or for the Institute, or anything else on image. Carl is Chairman of the Board of Carl Terzian Associates. He is a prominent author, lecturer and consultant. He is headquartered in Los Angeles and he&apos;s nationally known: governmental affairs, man¬agerial development and executive speech training and has served nearly four hundred clients since 1969. Each year he travels nearly 300,000 miles to address conventions, conferences and sales and management meetings as a motivational speaker. Carl has been speaking professionally for more than twenty-five years. He was graduate magna cum laude 1957 from the University of Southern California where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and student body president. He later served as State Department goodwill ambassador for President Eisenhower; public relations director for Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California; dean and professor of political science and speech at Woodbury University and public affairs director for architect Charles Luckman. He has been honored for his civic and philanthropic and professional accomplishments by the Congress and State Department, California Assembly and Senate, City and County of Los Angeles, Her Majesty the Queen of England, and six times by the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge. An educated man is distinguished neither by his clothes nor by his knowledge; he is replarkable not for the things he says, but for the way he says them. You cannot even stand with him under an archway in the rain without finding him out. He may talk only of the weather. His words and his phrases alike may be simple. -at distinguishes him is the arrange- ment of his words; however desultory his talk, it will be method- ical; he has habituated himself to foreseeing the part to be played by each word he uses and the place to be taken by each sentence he utters. On the other hand, the uneducated man, though shrewd and well-informed, will relate facts and events as they recur to him, generally in disorder; in his effort to recollect and in his attempt to rectify forgetfulness he will pause irregularly, filling the intervals with meaningless phrases, such as "and then ", "and: so ", or &apos;said he to me", "said I to him"; and even the contipuous parts of his story will be told confusedly-because he has not learned the proper use of words.* My own experience as an editor of technical manuscripts has taught me that the misuse of &apos;that&apos; and &apos;which&apos; is a fruitful cause of obscurity and confusion. The relative pronouns have distinct functions, and no writer can express himself clearly until he has learned to discriminate between these I functions. For example:

Os rolamentos da máquina de lingotamento contínuo de placas foram inspecionados após campanha do segmento. O tempo de operação foi de uma campanha (1,5 ano ou 1,5 milhão de toneladas produzidas). Nos mancais centrais dos rolos longos, foram inspecionados 14 rolamentos, sendo 2 deles SKF com microestrutura bainítica e os demais 12 de outro fabricante, com microestrutura martensítica. Os rolamentos SKF eram de classe de desempenho Explorer e aprimorados, ficando evidenciado modo de falha seguro, diferentemente dos demais rolamentos, que apresentaram fadiga subsuperficial acentuada (descascamento), fraturas por fadiga e superaquecimento. A aplicação de lingotamento contínuo é bastante crítica para rolamentos, pois contempla sobrecarga, cargas de choque, contaminação por água e particulado sólido e altas temperaturas de operação. Ainda assim, a vida em serviço dos rolamentos com microestrutura bainítica foi estendida.

I. LOCATION. THE Mojave mining district is situated in a group of small hills centering around Soledad peak, in the Mojave desert, Kern county, Cal. These hills are about 4.5 miles SSW. of Mojave, a railroad town at the junction of the Santa Fé and Southern Pacific railroads. The town of Mojave is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, to which it is connected both by telegraph and by rail. The distance on the Southern Pacific railroad is 102 miles, covered in 3 hr. and 45 min. by express train. A sketch-map of this region is shown in Fig. 1. The Mojave district is relatively isolated. The only other mining towns in this section of California are Randsburg and Johannesburg, in a district (containing the well-known Yellow Aster mine) at the northern end of a low ridge of hills, which begins about 20 miles NE. of Mojave, runs nearly N. for 35 miles, and varies in width between 3 and 6 miles. As will be seen later, the origin and formation of these hills are not the same as those of Soledad peak. II. CLIMATE AND VEGETATION. The climate and vegetation of the Mojave district are typical of the arid regions of the southwestern United States. During the winter and spring there is some rainfall, and the tempera-ture is generally from 60° to 70° F. in the day-time. The rainfall in the spring is often very considerable for short spaces of time, and cloud-bursts are not infrequent. In summer there is continual sunshine, with temperatures, as a rule, exceeding 100° F. in the day-time, while 115° F. in the shade of a house is not at all unusual; but at night the temperature falls considerably. ?ORE? is defined as ?mineral/s that can be mined at a profit?. So, what is ORE at 2,000 m water depth? Is it 5% Copper or 1.8% Nickel/Cobalt? One of the key factors that determine what is ORE, profitable or not, is the cost of mining and extraction. Therefore a determination of ORE requires a commercial and technical appreciation of both sea bed mining equipment and mining options. Perry Slingsby Systems (PSS) have built more remotely operated submarine work vehicles, including 900HP trenching machines, than any other company. With Nautilus Minerals, PSS have been studying a range of deep ocean mining solutions. This paper discusses the commercial and technical issues of various extraction techniques applicable to deep ocean mining from 1,500 m to 5,000 m water depth. Issues such as the rate of extraction, (i.e. tons per hour) is a key economic component and is often constrained by the design and horsepower of the miner. Likewise the design itself of the mining machine and cutting heads can determine the size of material produced which impacts on methods of lifting the ore to surface. Issues such as overburden, sea floor conditions, style of mineralization and physical properties of the ore, obviously affect the selection of appropriate mining machine configuration.

"This paper presents the final wall blasting practices at Eldorado Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Benchmark and improved wall control designs were explained in detail. Kisladag Mine has been implementing a high quality slope stability program on-site. The quality of pit walls is generally considered excellent, with very few wall failures being evident and with presplit hole barrels prominent in most areas of the pit. However, a minor scale slope failure occurred recently at the north-east section the pit. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls. Final wall blasting practices and geotechnical designs were evaluated. The work presented in this paper showed that changes to the blasting and geotechnical parameters are required atthe north-east section of the pit. Geotechnical design changes were 10 m bench heights with 70 ° slope face angle at that specific area. Having implemented several geotechnical and blast design changes (elimination of the subdrill for the catch bench, appropriate primer location, more favorable blast tie-up and delays), the crest loss was minimized significantly (<1.5 m) (<5 ft)."

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs&apos; scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than I km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defmed as 'all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated form and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system offluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: I. sources ofthe mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources ofthe metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. "Since Ag wires have similar hardness and bonding properties to Au wires, they can be applied in some pads. In the present study, the annealing effect (at 225°C~275°C for 30min) on the tensile mechanical properties of silver wires with f=23µm was investigated. In addition, the micro-structural characteristics and the mechanical properties before and after an electric flame-off (EFO) process were also studied. Experimental results indicate that with annealing temperatures of more than 250°C, the silver wires possessed a fully annealed structure, the tensile strength and the hardness decreased, and the elongation was raised significantly. Under the thermal effect of EFO, the necks of the Ag balls underwent recrystallization and grain growth was induced, and the annealed Ag wires had a shorter zone of HAZ (220µm). The bonding strength and the neck-strength of the Ag wires were more than 7gf and possessed excellent bonding properties.IntroductionThermosonic ball bonding is one of the preferred processes for electronic packaging to connect a semiconductor chip and a lead frame by a thin metal wire. At present, gold wire and copper wire are the preferred interconnect materials to bond with the aluminum metallized wafer pads [1, 2]. Since gold is expensive and the reliability of copper is poorer [3], the study of silver wire has attracted a lot of attention already. In addition, the inherent properties of high ductility and low hardness of silver as well as its workability effectiveness compared to gold, have made it a preferred alternative .[4, 5]"

The article by Benavides and Schuster provides an in-depth study of this transportation alternatives for a four-mine complex in western Kentucky. The examination of aerial tramways was not undertaken as an alternative solution. We feel this is an oversight since industrial ropeways are competitive with both belt conveyance and overland truck hauling. In fact, there are aerial tramway system, operational today, which are 100 years old and operating with some original components. Maybe unfortunately, there are no fixed rules or guidelines whereby the most cost-effective means of transporting and handling material for a given situation may be selected. Each situation must be evaluated m the variables that influence the selection of the desired alternative can be clearly defined. However, there are in-place industrial ropeway system that have proven economically feasible over a range of 1.6-50 km (1-31 miles). The more difficult the terrain, the greater the cost efficiency.

THE pyrites used in making sulfuric acid in the United States have been largely imported from Spain and Canada, the Spanish imports amounting to nearly 1,000,000 tons per annum in the pre-war period. The greatly increased use of sulfuric acid and the cutting off of these Spanish imports, incident to war conditions, brought about a threatened shortage of sulfur supplies during the war period. The bituminous-coal mines of certain districts have, for many years, furnished a small tonnage of pyrite in the form of coal brasses. A mechanical concentrator at Danville, Ill., for a number of years, has been treating hand-picked lump pyrite and coal from the picking belt and from the mines and a small plant near Gillespie, Ill., for a few months has been recovering pyrite from washery refuse. Many mines throughout Illinois, Indiana, Western Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have shipped an occasional car of the hand-cleaned lump pyrite. Only a very small percentage of the available pyrite has been recovered in this way, however, as usually the miners throw such lumps into the gob with slate and other impurities. It has been estimated that the western Indiana coal field could furnish more than 100,000 tons of pyrite per annum. The present production is very small. The possibility of furnishing the domestic trade with pyrites recovered as a byproduct from coal-mining operations appears attractive but there are certain features difficult to overcome. Pyrite, to be used in acid making, must meet with certain requirements as to size and purity. Lump ore for grate burners should be under 3 in. (7.6 cm.) and over 1 in. (2.5 cm.) in diameter. Fines for use in mecnanical roasters should be under quarter mesh. The material should be high in sulfur, free from arsenic and phosphorus, and as low in carbon as possible. A high-temperature stage has been used to study precipitation and dissolution in thin foils of Al-20pct Ag alloy directly in the electron microscope. The results show that the aging characteristics are similar to those observed for bulk materials, and in addition, direct evidence is presented for clustering at the solid solution temperature. The limit of solubility of G. P. zones is-350°C. The heterogeneous precipitation, the growth and dissolution of ?&apos;have been studied in detail. Growth of ?&apos; parallel to the basal planes, occurs by continuous motion of inter -facial partial dislocations. Growth stops at intersecting particles due to formation of sessile a/6 <110> interfacial dislocations. Growth normal to the habit plane occurs by the spontaneous nucleation of partial dislocations on alternate (111) planes and the thickening rate is --10-3= times the lengthening rate. The precipitates dissolve in layers and the final product is a whole a/2 <110> dislocation . The nucleation -growth -dissolution processes are thus completely reversible. Kinetic data obtained from the dissolution rates of ?&apos;particles enable the diffusion coefficient to be determined and the activation energy is found to be 37.5(±4) kcal mol-1, which is that expected for dzffusion of silver in aluminum. The velocity of the interfacial dislocations is thus dependent solely on the rate of diffusion of silver atoms. RECENTLY it was demonstrated that a high-temperature stage could be effectively used in the electron microscope to follow directly the processes of precipitation and dissolution in thin foils of A1-4 pct Cu alloy.&apos; These experiments also provided kinetic data which enabled the diffusion coefficient to be estimated. This new development of electron metallography opens up many fruitful areas of research and it was decided to investigate the aging behavior in thin foils of A1-20 pct Ag alloy, particularly the mechanism of heterogeneous precipitation (i.e., precipitation on lattice defects). This system was chosen because the aging characteristics of bulk specimens are now well known,2"7 and because we wished to obtain more details of the role played by partial dislocations and stacking faults in the nucleation growth and dissolution of the hcp ?&apos; phase. This is of interest for the general case of fcc-- hcp transformations. Part of the A1-Ag phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The use of a high-temperature stage also enables a study to be made of the clustering process (formation of G. P. zones) and to determine the structure of the solid solution prior to the usual quenching and aging procedures. It is also possible to obtain kinetic data from measurements of the rates of dissolution of precipitate particles. Unlike the results of previous experiments on A1-4 pct CU 1 where much of the initial precipitation occurred on the foil surfaces, the results on the A1-20 pct A1 alloy were identical to those reported for bulk specimens6,7 and no surface precipitation was ever observed. Thus, it was possible to follow the aging sequence: G.P. zones — ?&apos; — ? directly in the thin foils. This paper is concerned with the formation and dissolution of zones and the ?&apos; phase, and no attempt has been made so far to follow the mode of discontinuous precipitation of ?. I) EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The high-purity A1-20 pct Ag alloy was prepared by the Aluminum Co. of America in the form of 0.001-in.-thick sheets. The purpose of the present study was to arrive at a better understanding of the stress fields developed within drill bits under dynamic loading and the influence that these stress fields could have on the failure of the drill bits. Particular emphasis has been given to the influence that bit shape has on the establishment of highly localized, potentially destructive stress inhomogeneities within the bit. This paper covers one phase of a broad study involving three velocity regimes: impacts at very low velocities, 0 to 20 ft/sec, a velocity range in which dynamic effects are just beginning to be found; impacts at velocities ranging from 20 to several hundred ft/sec, arange commonly encountered in practical drilling operations; and impulsive loading through the detonation of explosives, a velocity range in which the dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and made more identifiable. Specifically, fracturing which develops at the end of a cylindrical bar undergoing a shock produced by impact was experimentally investigated, the impacted area being the face of a truncated cone terminating the cylindrical bar. Fracture characteristics were looked at as a function of impact velocity, area of impacted face and cone angle — parameters of considerable importance in the design of drill bit. EXPERIMENTS The specimens were made of Plexiglas, which enabled the fracture pattern to be easily observed. In Plexiglas, the velocity of a longitudinal wave is about 8,700 ft/sec, and the velocity of the transverse wave about 4,200 ft/sec. The specimens were impacted by a steel cylinder whose lower face was parallel to the terminal face of the experimental bit, as shown in Fig. 1. The impacting mass was shifted up and down on two steel rods, dropping from a maximum height of 11 ft, with the velocity varied between 0 and 6.5 m/sec. The initial mass of the cylinder was 4.1 kg, which could be increased by steps up to 8.8 kg by addition of steel plates. The velocity of the steel cylinder was determined by using an electric circuit; as the cylinder dropped, it contacted two steel wires, the first one starting and the second one stopping an electronic counter. Two similar counters connected in parallel were used to corroborate each other. The velocity was checked at each drop as it had been observed to vary somewhat from drop to drop. The two contact wires were located just above the top of the specimen so as to give a value of the instantaneous velocity of the steel cylinder at impact. The distance between the wires was 40 ± 0.5 mm and the discrepancy between the counters was never more than 0.1 m/sec. Thus the velocity was known to within 3.25 per cent. This precision was sufficient with respect to the precision of the machining of the specimens. A very small lack of parallelism between the face of a specimen and that of the impacting hammer resulted in an oblique impact which required a much lower velocity to break the specimen.
