The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1978 and 1979 was 8831.8 million and $336.4 million, respectively. In 1978, nearly all commodities registered an increase in production and value; unit value increased for all commodities, with the exception of native asphalt and sand and gravel. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite, third in masonry cement, kaolin, native asphalt, and oyster shell, and fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, fire clay, and scrap mica. Trend; and Developments.-The Alabama State Docks at the Port of Mobile handled more than 10 million tons of bulk material in fiscal year 1978; volume dropped slightly to 9.8 million tons in fiscal 1979. Bulk materials comprise the major activity at the facility, with iron ore and bauxite being two of the major materials handled. The movement of these ores is vital to the operation of many heavy industries in the State.

The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. The Brierleys are being recognized for their true scientific partnership with parallel achievements in academia and in business development. Nicholas is being recognized as the co-founder of Call & Nicholas and for his noted expertise in mining geotechnical engineering. Shields is being recognized for his innovative work with GPS integration and for playing a key role in laying the foundation for autonomous mines of the future. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Patrick E. Connor, ?Father of Utah Mining,? for pioneering mineral exploration efforts in Utah; Earl Tappan Stannard, president of Kennecott Copper Co., for transforming Kennecott in to one of the largest U.S. copper producers; Arthur Barrette Parsons, mining editor and author, for his book ?The Porphyry Coppers in 1933,? a seminal work detailing the history and technical information regarding major porphyry copper deposits and Ernest R. "The recovery of manganese from the Boleo project of Baja Mining is via an acid oxidation and acid reduction process in seawater. Manganese as manganese dioxide is leached into solution as manganese sulphate with the addition of sulphur dioxide gas as a reductant and then precipitated as a manganese carbonate. The use of the manganese carbonate intermediate to produce electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) has been extensively studied. The manganese carbonate can be used in place of natural (MnC03) or reduced ores (MnO) of manganese as a feed to the EMM plant. Manganese carbonate can be dissolved in spent electrolyte from manganese plating, followed by purification using ammonium sulphide precipitation of minor elements and then electrowinning in a selenium free process. The results of small cell testing of manganese electrowinning are reported.IntroductionThe Boleo Project of Baja Mining is a greenfields development currently under construction approximately 5 km north of the town of Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The Boleo property is held by the Mexican company, Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo S.A. de C. V. (MMB). MMB is owned 70% by Baja Mining Corp. and 30% by a consortium of Korean companies consisting of KORES - Korea Resources Corporation, LS Nikko Copper, Hyundai Hysco, SK Networks and lljin Copper.The Boleo deposit has Measured and Indicated resources of264.7 million tonnes grading 1.50% copper equivalent (CuEq) & Inferred resources of 159.9 million tonnes grading 1.15% CuEq. The calculation of copper equivalent is based on a combination of metal prices and predicted metallurgical recoveries (Table I). The metallurgical recoveries have been confined by extensive bench and pilot plant testing. Proven and probable reserves are available at Boleo to provide for more than a 30 year mine life. Initially, 25 years of mine life and 23 years of process plant operation have been scheduled in the February 2010 Technical Report Update (www.sedar.com)"

"During the calendar year 1925 the Bureau of Mines received from the operators of several hundred mines and quarries complete accident records covering deaths, permanent disabilities, and “lost time” temporary injuries. Some of the companies, - those that participated in the National Safety Competition-also furnished information showing the number of man-hours of work performed during the year. With these two types of information it was possible to calculate the accident-frequency and accident-severity rates of the different plants. Complete and comparable reports of accidents and Man-hours of “exposure” were received from 34 underground metal mines, 59 underground coal mines, 15 underground mines producing other nonmetallic minerals, and 102 open quarries or open-pit mines. The figures in the table appended to this report show the accident severity rates and other data for each of the 34 underground metal mines and for the group as a whole. It is proposed to publish similar figures for the other classes of mines and quarries at an early date.The 34 metal mines listed in the table are situated in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota., and Utah; they employed 5, 925 men, an average of 174 men per mine, including employees above-ground as well as underground. With but few exceptions, 50 men was the minimum number of employees in any mine. The total period of employment or “exposure” at the 34 mines was 14,612,607 man-hours, an average of 2,466 hours per man, or the equivalent of 308 work-days of eight hours for each employee. Accidents resulted in 15 fatalities, 9 permanent disabilities, and 1,950 temporary “lost time” injuries (causing disability exceeding remainder of shift). The fatal and nonfatal injuries represented 132,575 days of disability. Thus the accident frequency rate for the group was 135 accidents per million hours and the accident severity rate was 9.073 days lost per thousand hours of 1 “exposure”. The severity rates ranged from 0.227 to 88.653, while the ·range of the accident-frequency rates was from 16. 6 to 307 .4. In compiling the accident severity rates shown in the table, all accidents caused by explosives were weighted at twice the number of days actually lost, as one of the purposes of the National Safety Competition was to stress the prevention of accidents caused by explosives."

The continued decline In the production of synthetic soda ash (sodium carbonate) due to high costs and associated environmental factors, has improved the world demand for natural soda ash. The largest resource of natural soda ash is the mineable trona deposits of Southwestern Wyoming. Wyoming trona, a lacustrine evaporite of Eocene Age, is mined by five producers which process over 90% of the United States and 20% of the worlds soda ash. Total world consumption of soda ash is forecast to grow 1% annually. Increased expansion into foreign market's is absorbing the domestic overcapacity.

"Risks from political instability and government policies restricting equity ownership, local operations and transfers of payments affect the profitability of foreign mining ventures. More than seat-of-the-pants judgments and old-boy networks are required to anticipate these risks and to take actions appropriate to offsetting them. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risk s to a production of key minerals will be presented.IntroductionFirm s with extractive operations outside their home country do not have to be told that political stability and government decisions play a big role in the success o f their operations. The takeover of copper firm s in Chile during the Allende administration in 1971 and the recent decision by Venezuela to reduce Reynolds Metals equity share in a smelting operation from 50% to 28% are two examples of hundreds of events that have determined the profitability of extractive operations over the past decade. Both risks and opportunities for international firms seeking to produce and market raw materials are heavily affected by political conditions. While news of political events travel much faster than in the past and host governments are more clever in shaping the risks as well as the opportunities, politics has always been part of the mining business.What has changed is the need to be more systematic in approaching the assessment of political conditions and how it affects business. The increasing costs of extractive operations, the need for long-range planning, the importance of financial arrangements and the world-wide scope of man y firm s' activities require that the assessment be updated continuously and be comparable across different countries and different types of investments. Political risk analysis, the assessment o f macro-political changes and specific governmental decision s on the operations of extractive industries needs to become as systematic and integrated into corporate decision -making as economic analysis has become over the past two decade s."

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engine in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. Mathematical models of the dilution and dispersion of diesel exhaust contaminants can be useful only if these models can be validated. In this research report, experiments that were specially designed for the above purpose are described. These experiments were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Safety Research Coal Mine, in Bruceton, Pa. On the basis of this study, the data collected, and further review of available literature, it is concluded that mathematical models of dilution and dispersion are useful tools for mine ventilation planning. Additional objectives of this study about which conclusions and recommendations are reported here include: (a) evaluation of mine atmosphere contaminant monitoring systems; (b) optimum sampling site locations; (c) model sensitivity and error analyses; (d) computer coding of mathematical models; and (e) development of a diesel bibliography. While an extensive bibliography on diesels is provided in this report, Volume II of this final report has 511 references.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1985 was $405.9 million, a slight decrease from the record high of 1984. With the exception of clays, output of most nonfuel minerals increased over that of 1984. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of crushed marble and bauxite; third in firre clay; fourth in masonry cement and kaolin; fifth in portland cement and lime; and sixth in ferroalloys and recovered sulfur, Alabama ranked 20th in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced, but ranked 13th in value of industrial minerals. Valuewise, Alabama produced 2.4% of the Nation's industrial minerals.

In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

"MgO was chosen as an As(V) immobilization agent and a series of immobilization experiments was performed to obtain insights into the behavior of As(V)and MgO during leaching tests. Our experimental and modeling results demonstrated that As(V) immobilization by MgO consists of the following steps: (i) an increase in soil pH, (ii) desorption of As(V) from the soil, and (iii) the re-immobilization of As(V) by MgO/Mg(OH)2particles. Regarding the behavior of MgO, the modeling results showed that when the MgO dosage was 25 mg MgO/4g-drysoilor less, the majority of MgO was used to increase pH, and less than 1% of MgO was used to sorb As(V), which was consistent with the result of leaching tests showing that a high level of As(V) was leached at the MgO dosages. On the other hand, when the MgO dosage was above 25 mg MgO/4g-drysoil, the percentage of MgO used for As(V) sorption increased up to 35%, and correspondingly, the As(V) leaching level decreased to below 0.01 mg/L As at an MgO dosage of 75 mg MgO/4g-drysoil.INTRODUCTIONOne of the major arsenictransport pathways causing groundwater contamination is the migration of arsenicfrom artificially or naturally contaminated surface soils. Therefore, in this study, the immobilization of arsenate (As(V)) in soils was investigated using commercial-grade magnesium oxide (MgO) as a potential cost-effective measurement to prevent the occurrence of groundwater contamination with As(V).With respect to the use of MgO for remediating As(V)-contaminated environmental media, MgO has been used in several studies to remove As(V)from water(Yu et al., 2011; Jia et al., 2013; Tresintsi et al., 2014). Although these studies demonstrated that MgO effectively removes As(V)from water in water-MgO systems, the behavior of As(V)in water-soil-MgO systems has not been evaluated in the literature, and several questions remain to be answered to comprehensively evaluate the use of MgO as an As(V)immobilization agent in soils. For instance, as is well-documented in the literature(Ford, 2002; Lenoble et al., 2002; Zeng et al., 2008), iron oxy-hydroxide (FeOOH) is one of the important adsorbents for As(V)in both natural and engineered systems. Therefore, it is anticipated that the presence of FeOOH in soils significantly influences the behavior of As(V)in water-soil-MgO systems and consequently, the immobilization performance by MgO. Another important question to be answered is the behavior of MgO during the immobilization treatment. In our previous studies (Suzuki et al., 2013a, 2013b), commercial-grade MgO was demonstrated to effectively immobilize lead and fluoride, and the immobilization effectiveness was indicated to last more than 100 years against the exposure to acid rain (pH 4.0). However, these studies focused on the behavior of contaminants. As a result, little is known about the behavior of MgO during the immobilization treatment. The lack of understanding of the behavior of MgO during immobilization treatment is one of the main concerns leading to relatively low public confidence in immobilization treatments."

Mr. Le Fevre pointed out, as the pictures were run off, the dangers of the various operations, and the precautions that should be taken to avoid or minimize these dangers. . After the exhibition of pictures, the members adjourned to the University Club, where dinner was served. At the close of the dinner and an impromptu recital by Mr. Weeks, the meeting was adjourned. "This paper traces the introduction and use of fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems at underground mines in British Columbia. Reasons are given for the decision to make compulsory the use of such fluids in underground mines after January 1, 1975 by provincial government legislation. Examples are quoted of fires caused, or supported by, mineral oils which have resulted in loss of life and property.The basic principles of hydraulic systems are reviewed in order to present the effects of changing a system operating on mineral oils to one which must operate on FR fluids. Approximations of the cost of system conversions are given for certain machines and a brief survey is made of the various pieces of underground equipment which contain hydraulic systems operating on FR fluids.IntroductionIn 1948, Admiral Ben Moreel , who was then president of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the United States , wrote:""Although safe and healthful working conditions can be justified on a cold dollars-and- cents basis, I prefer to justify them on the basic principle that it is the right thing to do. ""(1)This paper will outline the introduction and use of fire resistant fluids at mine operations in the Province of British Columbia. That it was the right thing to do in enhancing the safety and well-being of every person employed at the mines was the prime consideration. That it may be justified on a cold dollars-and-cents basis is left for the reader to judge. The prime purpose of this paper is not so much to trace the efforts made by the individual mines to successfully introduce and use fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems, but to present an over-all picture of what occurred, in a collective sense, at the majority of mines which have ended up with a working FR fluid system. The problems attendant to the introduction of an FR fluid will be recounted in a manner which, it is hoped, will prove useful to those contemplating system conversions. Because the predominant fluid now in use is an invert, or water-in-oil. emulsion, this will be the FR fluid considered.Fluid Loss from SystemsThe quantities of various fluids required for use in hydraulic systems are extremely high. This statement in itself may appear to be redundant in that the capacities of the various systems should demand that a fixed amount of fluid is required for the initial filling of a system, with a further amount of fluid scheduled for use during subsequent fluid changes, i.e. at the recommended change intervals . If only this were the case!"

In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

As nations advance through various stages of economic development, the patterns of demand for minerals change. For example, as a nation develops from a subsistence economy through industrialization and into a service based economy, the use of minerals is at first low, then grows rapidly, and finally stabilizes. The past trends in the use of agricultural minerals by the currently advanced nations provide a pattern that the world as a whole may follow as it progresses through the stages of economic development. Future needs for agricultural minerals are estimated using this approach.

This report describes bench-scale studies and pilot-plant development of the Bureau of Mines process for roasting iron ores with a ferrous scrap reductant, such as discarded automobile hulks, to yield artificial magnetite. Quality magnetic concentrates containing about 66 percent iron and 6 percent silica with iron recoveries of over 90 percent were obtained after roasting fine-grained oxidized or nonmagnetic taconite with unburned, sheared automobile hulks in a rotary kiln. The relatively complete oxidation of the lighter gage metal in the automobile during roasting resulted in a metallic byproduct consisting of the unconsumed heavier gage metal scrap. This residual or tailored scrap is potentially useful as heavy melting stock and has more value than the original automobile hulk.

This paper discusses the challenges encountered in drilling and blasting of a small diameter shaft underneath a parking garage in historic Gastown, Vancouver, BC. This project involved drilling in a restricted headroom area, blasting in a confined space environment, and excavating using a novel vacuum technique. The 1.2m x 1.2 m x 8.5m deep shaft was required for installation of a hydraulic piston for a show lift. The project called for very accurate drilling through inter-bedded sandstone and siltstone within the water table. Development of a unique blast design was required for blast vibration control on a historic structure located just 15.8 meters away. The shaft was successfully completed without damage to any of the surrounding structures.

A textura cristalográfica e a densidade de discordâncias têm um papel importante nas propriedades de vários metais, podendo ser modificada de acordo com os processamentos mecânicos e tratamentos térmicos realizados, além disto, também é influenciada pela estrutura cristalina e energia de falha de empilhamento (EFE). O presente trabalho buscou observar a influência da EFE na textura cristalográfica e na densidade de discordâncias de metais CFC submetidos a laminação a frio. Os materiais usados foram o latão a, cobre e uma liga de alumínio 1050, que possuem baixa, média e alta EFE, respectivamente. Pode-se observar que diferentes níveis de EFE propiciaram, para a mesma redução da espessura após a laminação a frio, distintas texturas nos materiais utilizados e diferentes densidades de discordâncias.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) which contain Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, and Pb have been interested in as a target of commercial mining these 15 years. Japan has large potential of SMS and a national R&D project for the mining has been active these 5 years. However, the economy of SMS mining is very bad, because the waste tailing disposal cost is very expensive in Japan. A slurry flushing method is experimentally examined in this study for the improvement of the economy. During the flushing, because of density difference between the metal-rich ore and the waste rock, a kind of gravity separation is possible. The results suggest a possibility of the actual application.

The Bureau of Mines developed and evaluated a detector-sorting device to separate the copper-bearing portion from the barren portion of native copper ores. Small-scale sorting tests were run on minus 1-inch plus 1/2-inch size materials from the following Michigan samples: Winona, Kingston, and Centennial ores, and "poor" rock from the Champion mine dump. Results showed that 60 to 85 pct of the copper was recovered in 9 to 19 wt-pct of the sorted fraction. About 90 pct of the copper recovered was obtained in the first pass through the sorter. For the Kingston and Centennial ores, combinations of sorter concentrates and fines generated during crushing, resulted in recoveries of 93 and 94 pct, respectively, of the total copper in the samples. The combined products constituted about 66 wt-pct of the total sample and allowed the balance to be discarded with only a 6 to 7 pct copper loss.

MANY grindability tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory since the tabulated results were last published.1 The lists of standard ball-mill and standard rod-mill grindability tests are brought up to date in this paper, and considerable new material is added. This includes a tabulation of open-circuit grinding tests, with impact and compression-crushing tests. The standard ball-mill grindability tests (Table I) were made in a standard laboratory ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, running at 70 rpm, with a charge of 285 iron balls ranging from 1 1/2 to 3/4 in. in diameter and weighing 20,125 grams. Seven hundred cubic centimeters of minus 6-mesh stage-crushed dry feed was used, and the circulating load was maintained constant at 250 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 28 to 200, and the grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 479 tests. It has been calculated that the ball mill does 52.3 joules of useful work on the ore per revolution2 with 93 joules input to the mill. The standard rod-mill grindability tests (Table 2) were made in a laboratory tilting rod mill, 12 in. in diameter by 24 in. long inside, with a wave-type lining, running at 46 rpm. The grinding charge consisted of six 1 1/4-in. diameter and two 1 3/4-in. diameter steel rods, all 21 in. long and weighing 33,380 grams. The mill was rotated level for eight revolutions, then tilted up 5° for one revolution, down 5° for one revolution, and returned to level for eight revolutions. It was discharged by tilting downward at 45° for 30 revolutions. Feed consisted of 1250 cc of minus 1/2-in. stone and the circulating load was maintained constant at 100 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 3 to 65, and the rod-mill grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 105 tests. The impact and compression-crushing tests (Table 3) are given in a table that is an extension of a previous publication3 in which the method of testing was described in detail. Two equal hammers weighing about 30 lb each were arranged to strike simultaneous blows on opposite sides of the test specimen. Broken pieces of rock passing a 3-in. square and retained on a 2-in. square were set up with the smallest dimension between the hammers, and this distance was measured. The height of the hammers was increased slightly before each blow until the specimen broke, and the foot-pounds per inch of thickness was calculated. Ten pieces
