DISCUSSION, J. R. Long presiding R. I. Jaffee (Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio)—The authors have written a fine and important paper, and are to be congratulated. I do not entirely follow their discussion of the relationship between the ductility of titanium and its crystal structure. Since high purity titanium is extremely ductile, being capable of cold reductions of ovei- 99 pct, its ductility cannot be unduly restricted by its hexagonal crystal structure. It is true that interstitial solid solutions of nitrogen and oxygen do have a restricting effect on ductility, but this would appear to be an alloying effect rather than a crystal structure effect. The point made by the authors concerning the relative ductility between forged and rolled titanium does not appear to be conclusive, either. It would appear that in the same condition forged material would have equivalent or better ductility than sheet material. The difference between the ductility reported for forged bar and annealed sheet in Table I may be the result of a greater degree of cold work in the as-forged condition. S. F. Radtke, R. M. Scriver, and J. A. Snyder (authors' reply)—We appreciate the discussion by Dr. Jaffee. His point is well taken that the hexagonal structure of titanium does not, in itself, restrict the ductility of iodide material and, therefore, should not be limiting in this case. It is true, however, that the ductility of different grades of titanium is not necessarily related to their hexagonal structure but more likely to their orientation and composition. It is also true that the presence of small amounts of foreign elements in hexagonal metals may have more pronounced influence on ductility than a corresponding quantity in cubic metals. Average values from a large number of tests might show relatively better ductility for forged titanium than is recorded in Table I. The forged bars used in this work were tested in the annealed condition; little is known concerning the effect of forging practice on ductility in titanium metal.

In the Indiana limestone district, some 50 or 60 per cent of the merchantable stone in a quarry opening is waste, and only about 40 or 50 per cent of the stone from the opening is finally sold. So long as the present system of 'quarrying is used, the wastes measured and reported in this paper will continue. Comprehensive development of an entirely different method of quarrying, using wire saws for cutting, promises great improvement. Some of the savings to be expected are pointed out in the following pages. No attempt has been made to measure losses due to variations and natural flaws in the stone, since these vary greatly in different quarries, and accurate measurement would be difficult. The wastes that have been measured account for about 30 per cent of the total ledge, which leaves 20 or 30 per cent chargeable to unmeasured sources of loss. General Causes of Waste There are four general reasons for quarry waste: (1) the structure of the deposit, such as its shape, bedding planes, solution cavities and strain fractures; (2) efforts to quarry blocks which do not contain distinct color or textural variations; (3) the trade custom which permits purchasers to specify the size of the quarry blocks which they will buy, which is a matter of competition for business on the part of stone producers; (4) quarry methods, which cause the greatest amount of waste. Wide channeler cuts, hook holes, crooked splitting and uneven breaking on quarry floors are included in this category. Waste Due to Structure of Deposits The peculiarities of structure cannot be eliminated, but a chance for saving lies in quarrying to take advantage of them. The commercial deposits of Indiana limestone are lenticular masses from 20 to 70 ft. thick, and nearly horizontal. All of these deposits of good stone are in the Salem limestone, a bed in the sub-Carboniferous. The distribution of phosphorus between solid silicon and iron-silicon melt was determined to investigate the degree of phosphorus removal from silicon by solvent refining with iron-silicon alloys. The distribution coefficient which is the ratio of the mole fraction of phosphorus in solid to that of liquid is as follows: 0.22±0.02 (1310°C), 0.29±0.02 (1260°C) and 0.33±0.02 (1210°C). The removal percentage of phosphorus is: 84.2% (1310°C), 72.5% (1260°C), and 63.7% (1210°C). The average phosphorus content of produced silicon in the proposed solvent refining process would be over two times less than that of the conventional directional solidification. The values of interaction coefficient of phosphorus on iron at different temperatures were obtained as -3460±155 (1310°C), -3595±159 (1260°C) and -3694±119 (1210°C). Self interaction parameter of phosphorus at different temperatures are as follows: 68±4 (1310 ?C), 78±10 (1260 ?C) and 103±19 (1210 ?C). The calculated values for distribution coefficient of phosphorus at infinite dilution are: 0.22±0.00 (1310°C), 0.30±0.00 (1260°C) and 0.34±0.00 (1210 °C).

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. "PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

Gold was first discovered on the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862, and soon there were over 3000 miners working on the river. It has often been called the richest river in the world. Most countries probably have one of these, but it was certainly the richest in New Zealand. In the early days some miners collected as much as 200 oz/d from a sluice box, and the early river gravels must have been extremely rich before the gold bearing terrace gravels were sluiced into the river. Otago produced about 10 Moz out of the NZ total of over 30 Moz. Most of this was alluvial and possibly one third or more came from the Shotover. The extremely cold winter and danger of flooding made it a dangerous river to work. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 ft overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. These hazards still exist and dominate the method of working. The early hand miners cleaned out much of the riverbed, and the advent of the hydraulic elevator enabled deeper parts of the river to be worked over. Extensive sluicing of high terraces also took place particularly around Skippers. Several companies have attempted operations on the Shotover. Many of these were distinctly unsuccessful, such as the suction dredge at Maori Point about 1930 and the Skippers Limited fluming in about 1934. At least two attempts were made to divert the river with the Sandhills cut above Skippers and the Oxenbridge Tunnel down near Arthur's Point.

"This year’s DFI Outstanding Project Award is for the design and construction of the foundation scheme for the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In 1993, Gefyra, SA (a French/Greek consortium led by VINCI of Paris, France) was awarded a €750 million ($1billion+ USD) Concession Contract to design, build, fi nance, operate and maintain a three-span cable-stayed suspension bridge connecting the Peloponnese, Greece’s southernmost peninsula, with the mainland across the Gulf of Corinth. The contract extends over a 42-year period, 7 years for design and construction and 35 years for operation. The project was fi nanced through a combination of public funds, private equity and bank loans. Alternative foundation concepts that were considered included traditional driven piles, deeply embedded caissons and soil improvement. PROJECT CHALLENGESThe extreme technical challenges faced included:??Weak foundation soils composed of soft alluvial deposits consisting of interbedded layers of granular and cohesive materials with thin layers and lenses of gravel and liquefi able sand pockets; rock is believed to be at a depth of 1,000 m (3,500 ft) or more.??A very deep seabed exceeding 60 m (200 ft).??The requirement to withstand the collision of 180,000-ton tankers traveling at 16 knots.??Maximum wind forces of 250 km/hour (155 mi/hour).??Design seismic forces corresponding to Richter magnitudes of 7.0+ with peak ground accelerations of 0.48 g at seabed.??Design tectonic movements of 2 m (7 ft) in any direction between any two adjacent bridge pier foundations/pylons.Considering subsurface conditions and local seismicity and water depths, foundation design and construction methods were the key drivers for this project. In large part, the success of the project is owed to the unprecedented partnering and collaboration between all partners involved fostered under the leadership of Jean Paul Teyssandier and Gilles De Maublanc of VINCI Group (France) who served as lead Concessionaire and General Contractor. The joint venture’s lead Greek partners were Elliniki Technodomiki/AKTOR and J&P/AVAX. Alain Pecker of Geodynamique et Structure (France) served as lead Geotechnical Consultant/ Designer while Buckland and Taylor (Canada) served as Design Checkers with Ralph Peck and Ricardo Dobry (U.S.) as Special Advisors on foundation issues, Langan International/Langan Engineering and Environmental Services P.C. (George E. Leventis, Gregory Biesiadecki and Diane Fiorelli) served as Technical Advisor on geotechnical, geodynamic and foundation/marine construction issues."

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is .desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

ALTHOUGH nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the dis-covery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important mine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 188.3 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficulty in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, New Mexico. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 7-8 million tons per year. The coal seam at SJCC has tested to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during feasibility for this project, it was elected to utilize a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Three-entry gateroads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC utilizes a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob. In 2004, the mine was nearing completion of its first longwall district. The next district would contain longer panels (up to 12,500 feet). Due to the liberation of methane, and to a lesser extent hydrogen sulfide, a typical wrap-around ventilation system would not be appropriate. Not only would gas concentrations likely be challenging, but the overall ventilating pressure in the mine would have to be increased beyond limits established to mitigate the potential for spontaneous combustion. Given the above-described operating constraints, SJCC determined a need for a small ventilation shaft in the back (longwall setup area) of the next district that would draw adequate air past the longwall seals to maintain low gas levels and permit the required regulatory inspections to occur. Extensive ventilation modeling and gas desorption testing indicated that the shaft would be required to handle a volume of air ranging from 40,000 cfm to as high as 185,000 cfm. This large range is driven by the position of the longwall face with respect to the shaft and the effectiveness of the SJCC degasification program (SJCC uses vertical gob vent boreholes and horizontal in-seam methods). Ventilation simulations determined an appropriate diameter for the 350-ft-deep shaft to be 5 feet. Having determined shaft size, the next decision related to the method of shaft construction. Conventional shaft sinking was ruled out, due to the small diameter. Raise boring was an attractive option but had two drawbacks: (1) development crews would reach the bottom of the shaft just a few weeks before longwall startup, leaving a compressed timeframe to install the shaft, and (2) raiseboring requires additional underground entries to be developed to stow the project’s cuttings. While raiseboring remained a viable option, the problems associated with it led SJCC to also investigate blind drilling.

Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

Marshall and Bird have published the results of a cooperative investigation by the Bureau of Mines in which they developed a procedure for measuring the agglutinating value of coal.4 As stated in their paper, the procedure outlined was suggested by the early worn of Richters5 and Campredon,6 whose procedures were hurriedly modified to meet the need of an investigation then in progress. Since the publicatien of that paper, further work has been done in an attempt to show how the variables involved affect the concordance of the results, in order that such results may be obtained in different laboratories. Briefly, Marshall and Bird's method for determining the agglutinating value of coal consists in carbonizing an intimate mixture of 10 parts by weight of sand and 1 part by weight of coal in a porcelain crucible at a uniform temperature of 950° C. in a, vertical, cylindrical, electrically-heated furnace. After carbonization, the resultant buttons are crushed in a testing machine and the breaking strengths recorded in grams. The agglutinating value reported is the average breaking strength of 10 buttons. The coal for the test is prepared by crushing to pass a 100-mesh screen. The sand used as a diluent is sized between 40 and 50 mesh sieves with openings of 0.381 icon and 0.279 millimeters, respectively.

O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o efeito da pulsação de corrente sobre a microestrutura da zona fundida de soldas dissimilares entre o aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 444 e o austenítico AISI 316L. Chapas dos referidos aços foram unidas pelo processo de soldagem TIG. As soldagens foram realizadas variando-se a frequência de pulsação de 2 a 8 Hz e sem pulsação, mantendo-se constante a energia de soldagem. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica, MEV, EDS e EBSD. Os resultados mostraram haver um efeito da frequência de pulsação sobre a homogeneidade e microestrutura final da zona fundida.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a postmining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64 degrees, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457 m wide and 3657 m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones

CONSIDERABLE experimental data has been published in recent years on a few directionally solidified aluminum base eutectic alloys. The mechanical properties of A1-Al3Ni eutectic have been studied by Lemkey, Hertzberg, and Ford1',2 and Salkind et a1.3 where the alloy has been demonstrated to behave as a whisker reinforced composite with superior properties over many aluminum alloys. It has also been shown4 that aluminum reinforced with Al3Ni whiskers R. KOSSOWSKY, Member AIME, is Senior Metallurgist, Westing-house Research Laboratories, Pittsburgh, Pa. W. C. JOHNSTON, formerly with Westinghouse Research Laboratories, is Head, Department of Physics, George Mason College, University of Virginia, Fairfax, Va. Manuscript submitted March 28. 1969. IMD__________________ possesses excellent microstructural stability to 508°C. The effect of lamellar structure in A1-CuA12 eutectic was compared3 to the rod-like structure in the A1-Al3Ni eutectic, and was found to be better in low cycle fatigue. This was rationalized3 by postulating that a lamellar reinforcement was more efficient at blocking lateral plastic flow than a rod-like rein-forcement. The purpose of this study is to explore eutectic strengthening in other aluminum base alloys. The Al-Pd system5 forms a eutectic with aluminum and the intermetallic compound A13Pd at 25 wt pct Pd, and has a melting point of 615°C. A13Pd has an orthorhom-bic structure and transforms to hexagonal Pd2A13 at 785°C. Growth characteristics, compression yield strength, creep rupture, and microstructural stability of directionally solidified and as-cast alloys are investigated. Eutectic ingots having a nominal composition of 25 wt pct Pd were prepared by first compacting 1/2 in. diam by a in. high pellets from 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.99 pct Pd powders. The pellets were then levitation cast into 1/4 in. diam by 2 in. long copper molds. IN SPITE of its widely ramified interests in manufacturing, mines, lumber, railroads, and real estate, Phelps, Dodge & Co. remained primarily interested in exporting and importing, in buying and selling, and William E. Dodge, the directing-partner, consistently styled himself a merchant. After 1849 the profits of the company mounted steadily for seven years until they approached the half-million mark, but in 1857 another severe panic ended the long period of national prosperity that had begun some fifteen years before. Extravagance, indebtedness, and inflation again took their costly toll; or, as the New York Herald of June 27,1857, declared: Governmental spoliations, public defaulters, paper bubbles of all descriptions, a general scramble for western lands and town and city sites, millions of dollars, made or borrowed, expended in fine houses and gaudy furniture; hundreds of thousands in the silly rivalries of fashionable parvenues, in silks, laces, diamonds and every variety of costly frippery are.only a few among the many crying evils of the day. ABSTRACT: This paper presents further developments of the principle of Construction Process Mechanics of rockmasses, The principle of loading variations analyses in space-time is systematically described. To demonstrate the applicability of the theory and method, the effect of the construction process of two practical engineering cases are analysed.
