A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.' The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired. The distribution of mercury in soils, rocks, and ore was studied in three areas of the Pachuca-Real del Monte District: (1) An area north of the town of Pachuca where ore veins have been found at or near the surface. The mercury content of soil samples taken near the vein zones is far above the background value. The highest value was 1900 ppb (parts per billion) mercury in a soil sample above Veta Vizcaina; the background is about 50 ppb Hg. (2) In the area north of the town of Real del Monte where only a few of the veins are known to crop-out. Regardless of exposure, soils collected over veins show anomalous mercury values ranging from 250 ppb to 1900 ppb. (3) In an area south of the town of Real del Monte. Here, although vein outcrops are lacking, mineralization is known at a depth of about 120 m. All soil samples taken at 50 m. intervals along an east-west traverse contain anomalous amounts of mercury, with peaks corresponding with the known location of the veins.

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

"The possibility of SiO2 5N production by staged purification of ammonium hexafluosilicate (NH4)2SiF6 is discussed. High-purity silicon dioxide can be obtained with fluoridation of quartz concentrate by solid NH4F at 100 °C, with further sublimation of the product at 320 °C, its dissolution, ammonia hydrolysis, filtration and drying of SiO2•nH2O. This is accompanied by regeneration of the processing reagent - NH4F.INTRODUCTIONProduction of high-purity silica-5N (SiO2 content over 99.999%) is an important and urgent task of the modern chemical industry. This material is used in the manufacture of optical glass, optical fibers for internet cables, silicon for solar power and electronics.Quartz concentrate is raw material for the production of silicon dioxide. The existing technologies of synthetic silicon dioxide were introduced in the mid-twentieth century. These methods are energy-consuming, multi-step and do not meet stringent environmental requirements. In fact, as some conventional technologies became obsolete; it became necessary to develop new methods for the production of synthetic silica. We believe that the fluoride technology of processing of quartz materials by ammonium fluoride is the most promising direction.In industry, silicon dioxide marked ""Silica White"" is obtained by liquid-phase method. The method consists of the precipitation of amorphous silica from sodium silicate solutions with acids. The resulting product is filtered, washed and dried. Depending on the deposition conditions and nature of the coagulant the ""Silica White"" is acidic, neutral or alkaline. The dry product is subjected to grinding. The degree of dispersion and porosity of the particles of Silica White depends on the nature of decomposition agent (a substance that decomposes the silicate) and coagulant, conditions of sedimentation, filtration and drying. During the drying process the silica particles are sintered into aggregates of a few millimeters."

This report surveys the efforts of six contractors to the U.S. Bureau of Mines with regard to their electromagnetic noise measurement programs. What has been done, what is planned, and evaluations and recommendations are given for each contractor. The main observation is that to date there is not sufficient knowledge of electromagnetic interference in mine environments to design a reliable communication system. This knowledge should be available by the end of June 1972 if certain planned programs are completed successfully. A major effort of this report is to establish parameters to be measured, units to be used, and workable formats for data presentation. This is given in Appendix A. Some details concerning equipment, procedures, locations, and sample data are included in Appendix B.

Thennodynamic geochemical models have been applied to assess the relative effectiveness of a variety of reagents added to aqueous waste streams for the removal of radioactive elements. Two aqueous waste streams were examined: effluent derived from the processing of uranium ore and irradiated uranium fuel rods. Simulations of the treatment train were performed to estimate the mass of reagents needed per kilogram of solution, identify pH regions corresponding to solubility minimums, and predict the identity and quantity of precipitated solids. Results generated by the simulations include figures that chart the chemical evolution of the waste stream as reagents are added and summary tables that list mass balances for all reagents and radioactive elements of concern. Model results were used to set initial reagent levels for the treatment trains, minimizing the number of bench-scale tests required to bring the treatment train up to full-scale operation. Additionally, presentation of modeling results at public meetings helps to establish good faith between the federal government, industry, concerned citizens, and media groups.

Improvements in computer technology and associated software have allowed the improvement and development of more advanced ventilation modeling software packages including those that have the ability to simulate the effects of a mine fire on the ventilation system in terms of heat, smoke and gas distribution. This ability has real applications for the mining industry in terms of emergency planning, training and response. The primary focus of this paper will be the benefits to training programs that this type of software can provide to all types of training for various personnel, from the newly hired inexperienced miner, mine rescue, atmospheric monitoring personnel and emergency evacuation drills. The results of the simulations can then be used to give miner?s more detailed information on what types of conditions they may face based on the type and location of the fire and the program itself can be used to manipulate the ventilation system in a way that emergency response personnel may (i.e. tear down stoppings to reduce airflow to the fire area) and see the effects in real-time.

The Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A, a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Mining Company, operates a copper mining facility located in southern Peru. This "mine-forleach" operation currently produces 90,000 mtpy of copper cathode from secondary sulfide ore utilizing crushing, leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes. The leach solution handling and application rates have undergone constant development over the years. This paper discusses the improvements in leach application designed to: 1) satisfy the needs of the "lixiviant request rate", which requires the use of application rates as low as 3.5 L/h/m2 and as high as 15 Llhlm2 with variable rest periods according to the leach kinetics, and 2) alleviate the poor solution distribution on the surface of the leach heaps inherent to drip emitters. Low application rates result in poor surface solution distribution and the formation of upside down cones of dry, non-leached material in the top meter of stacked ore, with heavy jarosite and iron salt precipitation; moreover, ferric iron is lost as insoluble precipitates. On the other hand, high unit flows associated with poor agglomerate quality can lead to uneven solution flow patterns within the heap leading to solution short-circuits, fines migration, and ponding with adverse effects on acid consumption and recovery.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two o f the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85 and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper, pit lakes, 110 and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated. The hydrochloric acid solution from this step is recycled back to leaching. The process yields good overall metal recoveries and expensive

The climate and location of the Red Dog Mine present several challenges to blasting operations. The mine is located north of 68º latitude, in an area of continuous permafrost. Ground temperatures are below freezing year-round and air temperatures range from -40 to 70°F (-40 to 20°C). Because there is no overland access to the mine, the entire year’s supply of bulk explosives, approximately 7,000,000lbs (3,175,000kg) is shipped in by barge during the 100 day shipping season when the port is ice-free. The first week in July is the earliest that new product arrives at the port. Emulsion usage is maximized from mid April through October when surface water fills the blastholes during drilling. This necessitates that a considerable portion of the bulk explosives are stored for 10 months or more before usage. The emulsion is routinely pumped from the ISO containers at temperatures of 20ºF (-7°C). The mine engineers conducted a testing program during the 2001-2 blasting season to identify the bulk explosives best suited for the conditions at the mine. A secondary goal was to decrease the usage of sensitized emulsion, as this is the most difficult portion of the explosives order to ship. To ensure repeatability when transferring the results to the day-to-day blasting operation, the majority of the testing was incorporated into normal blasting operations in the field. The mining methods used at Red Dog Mine make direct fragmentation analysis impractical and performance testing in the field relied primarily on VOD measurements. The products were also tested for their ability to be pumped in cold temperatures.

"INTRODUCTION Oxide manganese ore from the Sheep Mountain property was of intermediate grade (23.0 percent manganese) and contained silica as the major impurity. The deposit from which the ore was taken is known as the Sheep Mountain manganese property and is 8 miles west of Durkee, Oreg. Test work was done in the metallurgical laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, on representative samples cut from a 290-pound shipment of crushed ore submitted by the Oregon State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and reported to be typical of the Sheep Mountain deposit.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of R. A research program to evaluate the use of ceramic die inserts for ferrous diecasting was initiated by the Bureau of Mines at its Tuscaloosa Research Center. Data were compiled from the literature to characterize selected ceramic materials with respect to thermal properties, thermal-shock resistance factors, chemical reactions with molten metals, and processes required to form die components. With this information and a computer model developed for predicting temperature and stress patterns induced in ceramic materials during simulated ferrous diecasting operations, 27 candidate materials were evaluated. After evaluation, only 15 were considered for testing in an apparatus constructed to immerse the ceramic specimens in molten cast iron. Of these, 13 were tested in a modified testing unit in which cast iron was poured onto the specimens. These tests resulted in the selection of three materials for further testing: boron carbonitride (50 pct B4C:5O pct BN), boron nitride-grade M (BN-M, 40 pct BN, 60 pct Si02), and pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN). Tests in a gravity-flow die unit showed that PBN was thermal-shock resistant and could be used in diecasting of ferrous metals.

The Li-N-H system composed of LiH and LiNH2 catalyzed by titanium compound desorbs ~6 mass% hydrogen and a quite small amount of ammonia in temperature range from 150 to 250 °C under He flow atmosphere. In this work, hydrogen desorption (H-desorption) mechanism in the reaction from LiH+LiNH2 to Li2NH+H2 in a non-equilibrium condition was clarified by TDMS, TG and FT-IR analyses for the products replaced by LiD or LiND2 for LiH or LiNH2,respectively. The results suggested that H-desorption reaction progresses through two-step elementary reactions mediated by ammonia. As a next step, we carefully determined the amount of the ammonia containing in desorbed hydrogen for the Li-N-H system in a closed system from the practical point of view. The results indicated that a quite small of ammonia thermodynamically coexisted in the desorbed hydrogen in closed system, although ammonia could not be almost detected in emitted hydrogen gas by TDMS under some non-equilibrium conditions. Moreover, for understanding the role of titanium, the chemical bonding state of the titanium compounds doped as catalyst in the mixture was examined by XAFS measurement. The results indicate that the Ti atoms, which can induce catalytic effect, are in a particular chemical bonding state.

"A very conductive zone was revealed in 1977 and 1978 by magnetotelluric (MT) measurements carried out near Ste-Mathilde, 6 km northeast of La Malbaie . In order to identify the structure causing the anomaly, thirty-five MT soundings were recorded in 1980 and 1981 on and around the conductor within a radius of4 km. Results confirmed that the conductor is of limited extent (less than 2 km by 0.4 km). The proposed model is a highly conductive vertical slab, the top of which is within 200 m from the surface. At a depth of approximately 825 m this structure joins a conductive layer which extends to the northwest but not to the southeast. The large conductivities and the depths involved can only be explain ed by a fractured zone flooded with electrolytic solutions, by graphite veins or by metallic mineralization (sulphides). The former seems to be the most likely hypothesis because an EW fault running across this zone could have allowed percolation of water and the leaching of disseminated pyrite out of a mylolisthenite filling the fault.IntroductionLa Malbaie is located 130 km northeast of Quebec City on th e North Shore o f the St. Lawrence River (Fig. I). Four major groups o f rocks have been mapped in this area: charnockitic rocks to the west , granitic rocks in the north east and southeast, gneiss and pegmatites northwest and south of La Malbaie , and Paleozoic sediments in the Clermont-La Malbaie Valley and along the shore of the St. Lawrence River (Rondot, 1966). Two major features dominate the structure of the region: Logan ' s line , a major thrust fault beneath the St. Lawrence which separates the Grenville Province to the north from the Appalachian regime to the south, and the Charlevoix Crater , a large Paleozoic impact crater that created an almost perfect annula r structure centred on Mont des Eboulements (Rondot, 1970). Ste-Mathilde is a village lying 6 km northeast of La Malbaie, just outside the ring-like graben zone caused by readjustments after meteorite impact. The survey area spreads over a granite body which is more than 2 km long and 0.6 km wide, surrounded by a wide migmatite zone which is injected by many bodies of pegmatite, the latter likely related to the granite body (Fig. 2). A zone of leptynites lies west of the area. An east-west trending fault (FA1) related to the Charlevoix Crater runs mid -way across the survey area; a second parallel fault (FA2) south of FAI separates the gneissic rocks from the Paleozoic sediments. The overburden is usually thin with outcrops frequently encountered except for the centre of the survey are a where 10 m of glacial sediments are expected (E. Gaucher, 1982, personal communication)."

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining affects these properties is therefore important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. To determine the impact of mining activities on soil hydraulic properties, soils from undisturbed areas, areas of roughly graded mine spoil, areas with replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the soil hydraulic properties of the four representative areas, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content and saturated hydraulic conductivity. Using this data, Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) simulations and risk analyses were performed to investigate mining’s effects on changes in soil erosion potential. Significant differences were seen in the hydraulic properties of the soils in the representative areas due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. The WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases as a result of mining activities disturbing the soil. The simulations also indicate that the erosion potential may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

"ChairmanThis part of the discussion is intended as an exchange of information between those who have installed rubber liners in their mills and a means of others to get information that may help them decide if rubber liners would be applicable to their mills.To start the discussion and to relate it to the previous section of this symposium Mine Equipment Co. Ltd. have supplied some graphs that will give some idea of the noise suppression that may be expected from the u.se of rubber liners instead of steel. The figures used in preparing the graphs came from installations of rubber liners in Sweden.L. Strah - Mine Equipment Co.The graph, Figure 1, shows on the bottom the octave band range. The noise level generated by the steel liners is represented by the dotted line and lies within the shaded area where it is considered that hearing damage may result. The solid line represents the noise level generated by rubber liners in the same mill and you will see it is below the shaded area. Although it is not marked on the graph I think the decibel range is from 7 5 to 115. The next one, Figure 2 which shows the relative noise levels generated by steel balls and pebbles with both steel and rubber liners shows the decibel range."

I welcome the new members to the Institute and congratulate those members who have been transferred to a higher grade. COLLOQUIUM The first paper, presented by Mr S. Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.
