R301 is a clad aluminum alloy, composed of a core of a duralumin-type alloy clad with a magnesium silicide alloy. It differs from other well-known clad alloys in that the cladding and the core respond to the same heat-treatments, and therefore the cladding contributes appreciably to the mechanical properties of the material. In Table 1 are reported the compositions of the core and cladding alloy for the material used for the experiments. [ ] In clad aluminum alloys where the core contains copper and the cladding does not, at elevated temperatures the copper tends to diffuse from the core through the cladding. This fact is well known and many investigations have been conducted to determine the features of this diffusion.1-7 Most of those investigations cover materials clad with pure aluminum; the present investigation covers a material clad with an alloy. Since the cladding thickness on R301 varies with the gauge, as shown in Table 2, several gauges were investigated. [ ] MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used was sheet of the following gauges: 0.025, 0.040, 0.064, 0.102, 0.170. Cut in pieces approximately 3 by 5 in., it was in the cold-rolled state and was soaked for increasing times at the following temperatures: 910°F., 940°F., 970°F. A Lindberg cyclone furnace was used for the experiments. The procedure was as follows: The furnace was started empty with controlling pyrometer set at the determined temperature. After the furnace had reached that temperature, it was run for some 20 to 30 min. empty, in order to allow the temperature inside to become stabilized. Then the first samples were introduced. A load thermocouple, with recording pyrometer, was connected with the sample of the heaviest gauge. About 10 min. was required for the material to reach temperature and the soaking time was counted from that point. After 200 min. soaking, the second group of samples was introduced without stopping the furnace. After 200 min. more, the third group of samples was introduced, and so on, until the last sample had been introduced. Every time the furnace was opened and new samples were added, a drop of temperature was registered by the thermocouple connected with the material

Coal fly ash and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) sludges can be returned to mine pits, fills and revegetation zones in Virginia by regulation if (and only if) a positive beneficial use can be shown. Utilization of alkaline fly ash for control of acid drainage from pyritic coal processing waste piles, and use as a soil amendment for revegetation, are the two dominant beneficial uses proposed over time. Both applications must be controlled by the basic chemical properties of the ash proposed for utilization. Currently, public concerns over long-term As and Se leaching from various applications are increasingly driving regulatory options for mine site utilization. Many fly ash materials are relatively low in inherent alkalinity or neutralizing ability, and certain ashes are actually acidic. Failure to add sufficient total alkalinity will result in strong acidification of the ash utilization zones, stripping heavy metals like Mn, Zn and Cu from the fly ash matrix. Similarly, if alkaline ash is loaded into non-acid forming coal wastes at high rates such that leachate pH is > 9.5, significant leaching of As and Se has been documented in large scale laboratory leaching columns. Utilization of fly ash and FGD as a mine soil amendment for revegetation is based upon combined liming and water holding capacity benefits, however, levels of soluble salts (primarily sulfate and borates) limit one-time application rates to 100 Mg/ha or less.

During the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected several lots of ore' from properties in the vicinity of Winkelman, Ariz. As none of the ores would be marketable directly, an investigation was made to determine their amenability to concentration by ore dressing. The Geronimo group of claims is in Pinal County, 8 miles west of Winkelman, Ariz. The manganese oxides occur as cementing material in ore zones of conglomerate. Representative samples of a 2-ton lot of ore cut from outcrops of two lenticular deposits were laboratory-tested. Two 1-ton samples from the Benningfield property were similar in physical characteristics but differed in grade. This claim is 11-1/2 miles south of Winkelman and about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River on the south side of Putman, Wash. The manganese minerals occurred as nodules and lenses, replacing limestone, in a capping over a dark, igneous dike. The North Star group consists of five claims on the west side of the San Pedro River 14 miles south of Winkelman. The ore consists of a low-grade, manganese oxide-calcite occurrence interspersed with stringers of higher-grade material and is present as filling in a fissure zone in porphyry. Two samples were obtained by the examining engineer; one sample represented run-of-mine material, the other represented ore from the vein that could be hand-sorted or selectively mined.

The use of base grouting (tip grouting) to enhance the axial capacity of drilled shaft foundations can achieve improvements in economy and reliability for many types of projects and soil profiles. Recent experiences on a range of different construction projects in the Southeastern U.S. illustrate the most attractive opportunities for utilizing this technique and some limitations of the method. The quality assurance provided by measurements obtained during post grouting the pile toe is another important aspect favoring its use; the base grouting is shown to identify weaker piles and provide a means of remediating some deficiencies so that increased foundation reliability is achieved. This paper provides an overview of the methods used to evaluate and design for base grouted shafts along with lessons learned from several case histories.

A reasonably clear and broad definition of occupational disease as originated by the Supreme Court of Ohio is: "A disease contracted in the usual and ordinary course of events which from the common experience of humanity is known to be incident to a particular employment." An ailment does not become an occupational disease simply because it is contracted on the employer's premises. It must be one that is commonly regarded as natural to, inherent in, and concomitant of the work in question. The important distinction between accidental-traumatic injuries and occupational-disease injuries is that accidents occur at specific times, ordinarily are discovered readily, and usually leave no question as to the particular employer it whose development the accident occurred. On the other hand, occupational diseases may develop slowly, unknown to the employer and employee until disability occurs, and the injuries sustained are continuing disabilities over an extended period of time and may be incurred while the employee is working for one of several employers.

The roasting of nickel-bearing sulfides is a complex but important process which has not been adequately characterized. Combination of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy has been proved to be useful for such experiments. The leaching results of nickel, copper, iron and cobalt was analyzed by ICP methods. Process possibility of polymetallic sulfide concentrates through a three-step procedure (oxidation roasting - chlorination - water leaching) was suggested. Ammonium chloride could react with nickel/copper oxides to produce intermediate complexes. At the temperature range of 280~340 oC, these complexes further decomposed to the corresponding simple chlorides. Roasting sulfide concentrate using NH4Cl is effective for complex ores.

American Engineering Standards Committee,6 December 30, 1925 It is specified that the dust to be used is of a size that all will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and that 50 per cent or more will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch.

This paper presents analysis of environmental effects induced by cautious blasting during the construction of the Istanbul Subway 4 Levent - Ayazaga Darulsafaka Metro Tunnel Project carried out by the contractor, located at Northern Istanbul in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, for the prediction of the peak particle velocity and to determine the slope of the attenuation curves together with the maximum charge per delay for the S6-7-8 shafts of this tunnel route, ground vibration components were measured carefully by using five vibration monitors during the construction of the tunnels which required blasting. The particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighboring buildings, and structures. Also, data pairs of scaled distance and peak particle velocity obtained from 107 records belong to 51 shots were analyzed statistically. Empirical relationships with correlation at the 95 % confidence interval were established for these tunnel excavations and suggested for the test sites in order to estimate particle velocity of the ground vibrations. As a result of the studies, some practical charts are created in order to minimize the psychological effects of the shots, and simplify the authorities of shots’ job. And last but not least, make sure that the shots will be done in a controlled way.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop substitutes for critical and strategic materials for metallurgical applications, the Tuscaloosa Research Center has evaluated the effect of additives and starting materials on the sintering and strength properties of sialon (silicon-aluminum-oxynitride) compositions fabricated by conventional pressing and sintering techniques. Sintering and MOR (modulus of rupture) data were developed for sialon compositions produced from three components, Si3N4, A1203, and AIN. When doped with Y203 to aid in sintering, the highest MOR values were obtained with compositions containing between 20 and 30 mole-pet (A1203 + AIN). The effect of the crystalline phase of the Si3N4 and Al203 used in the three-component system on MOR also was investigated. Alpha-Si3N4 and ?-A1203 were found to be the best starting materials. A sialon composed of 67.4 mole-pct a-Si3N4 plus 32.6 mole-pct (?-AI203 + AIN), doped with 5 wt pct Y203, had MOR values at 25°, 1,200°, and 1,400° C of 40,300, 40,300, and 31,100 psi, respectively. Samples of this composition doped with Gd203, MgO, Zr02, and ZrSi04 also were evaluated. The ZrSi04-doped sialon had higher MOR values than Gd203-, MgO-, and Zr02-doped materials but lower MOR values than the Y203-doped sialon. The MOR values of ZrSi04-doped sialons were 25,000 and 25,900 psi, respectively, at 25° and 1,400° C.

Cell depth has been for many years a controversial question in a flotation-machine performance. In the impeller type of machine, we are really talking about impeller submergence—i.e., the depth in the pulp at which the impeller is required to produce aeration. The Flotation Machine a Compressor A flotation machine can be considered as an air compressor or blower in which the aeration mechanism takes in air under atmospheric pressure† (14.7 Ib. per sq. in.) and blows it into the pulp (the pulp being the receiver) against a head of 14.7 plus cell depth in feet times 0.4333 lb. per sq. inch. In commercial machines the impeller is submerged in the pulp to depths ranging from about 2 ft. in the smaller machines to as much as 5 ft. in some of the larger ones. In the 2-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head on the impeller is (2 X 1.25 =) 2.50 ft. (assuming a pulp density of 1.25), equal to (2.50 X 0.4333 =) 1.078 Ib. per sq. in. For the 5-ft. cell, the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must make air is (5 X 1.25 X 0.4333 =) 2.708 Ib. per sq. inch. In the small 2-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (1.078 ÷ 0.147 + 0.01078 =) 6.85 per cent and in the large, 5-ft. machine, the volume reduction is (2.708 0.147 + 0.02708 =) 15.5 per cent. It is obvious that for unit volume of free air intake the larger machine receives a lesser (8.65 per cent less) volume of aeration* than the smaller machine. The bubbles in escaping from the pulp expand and are greater in volume at the surface than at the moment of their formation in the pulp; 7.33 and 18.4 per cent larger, respectively, in the small and large machines. Just how this situation affects flotation is not known. It is interesting to note, however, that the bubbles are smaller in the zone of the coarsest particles and largest in the upper zones of the her, more easily suspended mineral particles. It would seem that the relationship might be reversed advantageously. The deep cell is at a greater disadvantage in this respect than the shallow cell. Nothing, however, presumably can be done about this situation. The shallow cell is a partial corrective. Not only does the compression ratio of aeration increase with impeller submergence but the hydrostatic head against which the impeller must operate also increases. Insofar as prevention of mine explosions is concerned, it is apparent that the coal-mining industry has profited but little from experiences during the past 15 years. The fact that explosions can be prevented if well-known preventive measures are adopted and conscientiously carried out appears to warrant the conclusion that many coal-mining people are indifferent to the hazards that may result in explosions. Although the principal burden of preventing explosions is upon the management, and much of the evident carelessness in failing to place in effect and to enforce suitable precautions, is assessable directly against management, the worker also has a very definite responsibility, and numerous explosions have resulted because of his failure to carry out his part in accepted principles of safety. The record of fatalities from mine explosions during the past 5 fiscal years has been anything but encouraging or about which coal-mining people can take pride; more men were killed by explosions (673) than were killed from the same cause during the preceding eight years combined (577). During each of the fiscal years 1942 and 1943, 152 fatalities resulted from explosions, compared to 163 during the fiscal year 1941, 206 in 1940, and only 16 in 1939.

"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. The double-track, single-tube tunnel has an inner diameter of 8.5m (about 9.8m excavated diameter, 75m2 excavated cross-section). The tunnel is inserted in a densely urbanized context."

This paper outlines the process for designing a hard rock blast in an underground coal mine. The coal mine is located in Western Kentucky and operates four continuous miner units at 7 unit-shifts per day. The mine operates in the Western Kentucky No. 11 Seam with local variations from 4.5 - 5.5 feet seam thickness. The seam has sporadic siderite deposits. Usually these deposits do not significantly interfere with the mining process. When previous siderite deposits were encountered they were small enough to drop an entry for a couple of crosscuts. The blasting plan was called for after a siderite deposit was encountered in the belt entry at about one third of the panel length. The other sides of the panel had been previously mined and sealed so the decision was made to mine through the siderite deposit with the continuous miner instead of abandoning the panel. The deposit was approximately 300 feet in length down the belt entry. Mining through the deposit with the continuous miner was expensive in both terms of production and of wear and tear on the continuous miner. A blasting plan for the siderite deposits was designed to minimize damage to the continuous miner should a similar situation occur.

With 13.7km of TBM tunneling in Atlanta’s hard gneiss well under way, drill and shoot work continues on several sites throughout the city. In order for the City of Atlanta to meet the consent decree imposed by the federal government, an aggressive construction schedule was a necessity. Construction consists of two deep, large diameter tunnels, four construction shafts, a pumping station, one overflow shaft, three large intake structures, and two connecting tunnels. Due to the multitude of blasting insensitive urban environments, a high standard of seismic and air-overpressure criteria, coupled with time restrictions, was adopted for the project. At any given time, drill and blast operations were under way at four of the seven sites requiring a certain amount of coordination between the TBM excavation, surface work, and the forces of Mother Nature. This paper addresses the challenges faced and the techniques used to safely and successfully complete the rock excavation of the West Area CSO Tunnel and Pumping Station project.

This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. "The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mining-substances; to promote health and safety, in the mineral industries; to conserve Material resources , and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other Mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. "The article describes the analysis of methods and criteria of selectivity of optimal ore preparation schemes. Traditional criteria based on study of physical-mechanical properties of ores give the comparison of obtained figures with a reference standard or statistic data and the selection of the ore preparation scheme is made on a basis of a similar scheme from the existing production.Further on estimation is given to different criteria of the crushing selectivity, the new criterion is offered, the definition of which is done by results of an optical microscopy– the estimation of a valuable mineral release degree. The final estimation of the crushing process selectivity L? is performed by a calculation of a ratio of the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a crushed material to the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a raw product.Besides, optimality assessment of using the specific crushing unit is preliminary performed according to a maximum crushing degree of a material, however, the priority is given to the maximum selectivity criterion. The check of the proposed criterion was done when comparing the crushing of niobium bearing ores of the Vishnevogorskoye deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion L? showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) has the value of the selectivity criterion lower than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). For the crusher CC the criterion L? is 0.82 – 0.87 units, whereas for the crusher CIC – 1.43-1.755 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 120°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1,420 rpm, specific energy consumption – 6.99 kW?t/t.INTRODUCTIONIt has been shown that the most efficient techniques of mineral raw materials disintegration are selective crushing enabling to produce liberation of particles at maximum use of destruction techniques by borders of minerals cleavage. These days, such techniques are usually called special disintegration techniques (Jankovic & Valery, 2015), and they are used in 3–4 crushing stages. The selection of optimal crushing techniques is performed based on the following main parameters:- degrees of crushing, calculated based on granulometric features of raw and crushed products;- selectivity criterion defined according to useful mineral release and slime ability degree; and- traditional criteria (Gazaleeva et al., 2015) of choice based on study of physical-mechanicalproperties of ores gives the comparison of obtained figures with a reference standard or statistic data and the selection of the ore preparation scheme is made on a basis of a similar scheme from the existing production."

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.
