The recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide has important implications for coal- burning power plants and nonferrous metal smelters. The thermodynamic analyses showed calcium sulfide to be suitable for recovering elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide. At the temperatures of 1023 to 1153 K under the sulfur dioxide partial pressures of 5.0 - 60.1 kPa, elemental sulfur from sulfur dioxide was recovered by its reaction with calcium sulfide. The kinetics of this reaction were measured at the same conditions using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. This reaction scheme would be attractive if the coproduct calcium sulfate can be reduced to regenerate calcium sulfide. This is the topic of another paper. At 1073 K under the sulfur dioxide partial pressure of 25.8 kPa, 48 % of the original calcium sulfide was converted to calcium sulfate in an hour. Under the same conditions, 55 % of the regenerated calcium sulfide were converted to calcium sulfate in an hour even after third regeneration.

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). Cadmium ingot and nickel powder were prepared by high-temperature distillation, solvent extraction and liquid phase reducing method with spent Cd-Ni batteries as raw material. The impacts of the temperature in the distilling stage, the concentration of H2SO4 in the leaching stage, the pH value in the extracting stage and the dosage of hydrazine in the reducing stage were discussed respectively. The as- prepared samples were characterized by the means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results showed that the recovering efficiencies of Cd and Ni reach 99.5% and 99.3%, and the purities of Cd ingot and nickel powder were higher than 99.90% and 99.80%, respectively.

The Finniss River system in tropical northern Australia has received 'acid-drainage' contaminants from the Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine site over the past 4 decades. Following mine-site remediation that began in 1981-82 the annual contaminant loads of sulfate, Cu, Zn and Mn have declined by factors of 3, 7, 5 and 4, respectively over 1990-93, compared to the 1969-74 pre-remediation loads. Comparison of the frequency distributions of contaminant water concentrations over these pre- and post-remedial periods have shown varying degrees of reduction in the highest levels following mine-site remediation, that are consistent with reductions in their annual-cycle loads. Among the three selected major metal contaminants the reductions in maximum water concentrations are most pronounced for Cu. The demonstrated reductions in the highest water concentrations of all four contaminants are also associated with previously reported ecological improvement in the Finniss River system, compared to the benchmark of environmental detriment established in 1973fl4, prior to the beginning of remediation at the mine site.

The extremely cold weather and heavy snowstorms of January and February in northeastern Pennsylvania--with frozen mining equipment, diminished preparation and lack of railroad cars--severely hampered the production and distribution of anthracite. As a result, the previous estimates for the 2 months have been revised. On March 1, 1977, at the Porter Tunnel of the Kocher Coal Company at Tower City, Pa., an underground flash flood, which apparently broke through the wall of an adjoining abandoned shaft, swept through the mine. As of March 9, 1977, four miners were reported killed, three injured, and five trapped in the wreckage. The Kocher Coal Company began operations at the Porter Tunnel in 1968 and has had no fatalities until this current tragedy. The mine employs 20 persons on the surface and 115 miners underground, producing 750 tons of coal per day. Of the 109 underground mining operations in the anthracite region, this is the one remaining large mine that employs over 100 men.

"The temperature rising characteristics and reaction of the reduction of iron oxide pellets with anthracite fines were studied using a MW-L0316V microwave oven and Leica-DM-RXP polarizing microscope. The results show that iron oxide pellets and anthracite fines have good microwave absorbing properties, and high temperature and reducing atmosphere in a relatively short time for reduction of iron oxide pellets can be achieved. The reduction reaction, which follows the unreacted core model, is rapid and the metallization increases from 13.41% to 56.57% as the reduction end point temperature increases from 850oC to 950oC. The iron is formed, fine grain crystals of iron are transferred and the contraction of metal phase occurs firstly at the surface of pellets, which hinders the reduction reaction at the center of pellets. The rate of reduction reaction increases slowly as the reduction end point temperature increases from 950oC to 1050oC.IntroductionIron ore direct reduction can be divided into gas-based reduction and coal-based reduction. Owing to the effect of the resource and the related economic benefits [1, 2, 3, and 4], the development of gas-based direct reduction technology is restricted, but the development of coal-based direct reduction supported by the relevant industrial policy has very good prospects for application.As a source of clean energy, in China microwaves have been applied in many fields [5, 6, and 7]. Chen Jin studied the reduction of carbon pellets under microwaves, and has made some progress on reduction kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Other countries also have related research in this field [8 - 15], for example, Kotaro Ishizaki and Kazuhiro Nagata have done research on the reduction reaction of carbon magnetite heated by microwaves. The research shows that Fe3O4 is deoxidized to FeO at about 800oC, and FeO is deoxidized to Fe at 1000oC-1025oC. Due to the very good heat absorbing properties of iron oxide pellets and anthracite fines, the selective and rapid heating of microwaves can rapidly raise the temperature of pellets and anthracite, and the iron oxide pellets can be rapidly reduced. In order to provide enough theoretical basis for direct reduction by microwave heating, this paper studies the temperature rising characteristics, behavior of the reduction reaction and the changes of the iron oxide pellets and anthracite in the microwave field."

The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

This circular presents the results of a survey of research on jet fuel thermal stability jointly sponsored by the National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA), Tulsa, Okla., and the Bureau of Mines. The development of supersonic planes has led to many problems that did not exist in the operation of subsonic aircraft. One of the most important of these is rapid deterioration of the fuel at the high temperatures to which it is subjected. At higher speeds, aerodynamic heating of the airframe imposes severe thermal problems, and conventional techniques of rejecting the heat to the atmosphere become impractical. The fuel is the only material present in sufficient bulk to be used as a heat sink. Thus, the fuel is subjected to aerodynamic heating and also is used to dissipate heat from lubricating oil, hydraulic fluid, electronic equipment, wheel wells, and cabin air. Consequently, the fuels may have to withstand both moderate temperatures for sustained periods in the fuel tanks and higher temperatures for brief periods during transfer from the tanks to the combustion chamber. Because of high temperatures, insoluble residue or gum may form in the fuel and contribute to heat exchanger fouling and to clogging of the fuel manifolds, nozzles, control systems, and other components of the fuel system.

The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.

Oxidised ores possess a significant share among raw materials which are treated by traditional plant technology. As usual, the chemical composition of these ores is rather simple. They can be treated by standard cyanidation. In this case, the resulting wastes have an alkaline reaction. Their toxicity (in case of ROM ores treatment) is mainly due to the presence cyanides and thicyanades. The tails are dexotified before disposal. However, chemical reagents used cannot provide a complete removal of toxic matters. In this case, this disposal poses a real problem because these tails contain a significant amount of CN and SCN and their behavior during a long disposal should be studied. A sample with a simple composition taken from cyanidation tails was studied. The sample presents itself the quartz low-grade sulfide gold-bearing ore. Sulfide sulfur content is 0.15 per cent,and heavy metals content is 0.023 per cent. Method of testing is described further. The samples were tested under moderate and subarctic climates based on the difference in temperature, moisture and the degree of oxygen saturation of air. The pH of water extract, which was prepared using distilled water, was also determined besides measuring the concentration of cyanides and thiocyanates. This demonstrates the stability of sulfide-bearing minerals in the disposed tails. The tests time was 820 days. It was found that the alkalinity of the samples tends to lower under oxygen-containing conditions in proportion to temperature increasing. Under conditions without oxygen, the pH lowering is minimal. Mineralogical and chemical properties of the ore material give positive alkaline balance during testing. The solid sample contains enough alkaline agents to compensate dangerous to the environment reactions of sulfides oxidation.pH value maintaining under alkaline conditions witnesses to the possibility of a safe disposal of this tails type. The largest amount of cyanide is removed under acid-containing conditions at positive temperatures. The higher the temperature is, the more intensive destruction is. At the moment, of finishing the tests at 20ºC temperature, the residual concentration of CN- was 0.06-0.10 mg/L, at 4ºC, the residual concentration of CN- was 0.2-0.3 mg/L and at -18ºC was 0.4-0.6 mg/L. Under conditions with the lack of oxygen, cyanides can be removed within the first 200 days. Then, this process fully stops. A stabilized cyanides concentration is 3.0-4.0 mg/L. The presence of sulfides increases the content of cyanides at the initial stage of testing. Then, the concentration of SCN at the temperatures above 0ºC decreases rapidly under oxygen-containing conditions. At the rise of temperature, a narrowing of peak at the curve and an increase of the destruction process are observed. At the end of testing, the concentration of thiocyanates in the moisture of wastes was 0.2-0.3 mg/L at the temperature of 20ºC and 0.5-0.6 mg/L at the temperature of 4ºC, respectively. The concentration of thiocyanates contained in a frozen sample and media which have the lack of oxygen stabilizes at a certain level owing to sulfides and does not practically change further. It was found that detoxification of oxidized cyanidation tailings with a simple composition which were disposed as filtration cakes can be possible. In this case, the concentration of cyanide in the moisture of disposed wastes can have a close value or equal to actual concentration during cyanidation. In order to meet the requirements of high ecological safety standards and successful detoxification process of toxic compounds in the tails under the action of natural factors, the conditions of air aeration with oxygen for the whole volume of tails are required. Thermal conditions at depths of several k.i'-.r.,etres in hydrothermal systems are a major (actor controlling gold transport into the epithermal environment. Understanding of the coupling of thermal, metal and ligand (HZZ S) sources in the root zones of hydrothermal systems therefore becomes important for the application of tectonic and igneous petrochem- ical studies to regional scale precious metal exploration. The evaluation of favourable conditions in this source zone and application to explor- ation rests on a detailed knowledge of the gases, H2S, CO2 hydrocarbons and other trace components preserved in fluid inclusions. Recent developments in analytical techniques now permit examination of these components and the recognition of complex hydrocarbons in rluid inclusions from epithermal and other lydrothermal systems appears promising for ieoosit-source correlation.

The standard heats of formation (?Hf°) of holmium trichloride and terbium trichloride were measured by solution calorimetry. Heats of solution of holmium and terbium metals and their anhydrous chlorides were measured in 4.360 molal HCI at 298.15° K. From these measurements ?Hf° for HoC13 (c) was calculated as -240,290 ±1,700 cal/mo1e, and ?Hf° for TbC13 (c) was calculated as -238,330 ±1,500 cal/mole at 298.15° K.

A wide variety of materials have satisfactory to superior insulating properties and can be used to control the flow of heat, provide energy savings, improve personal comfort and contribute to personal safety. Such materials range from completely organic products--both of natural origin and synthetics--to completely inorganic. In many cases, thermal protective systems are actually combinations of both. Obviously, those insulating materials which are principally inorganic have the inherent advantages of low to minimal combustibility as well as utility at vastly elevated temperatures. Both of these properties are highly desirable in providing not only thermal energy conservation, but also personal safety in residential and commercial applications. As the thermal insulation needs of man and industry have developed, there has been an ever-increasing demand on the minerals industry to provide the resources required to fill these needs. On a global scale, industrial minerals have become the fundamental base upon which today's thermal insulation industry has been built. The use of minerals to control heat flow range from the most unsophisticated applications to those requiring the ultimate in scientific technology. In many cases the minerals are themselves converted in- to the major insulating media; for example, fiber glass, rock wool or refractory fiber. In other cases, minerals are used as the chemical reactants to form the binder matrix which in turn provides the product strength required for adequate handling and installation; for example, calcium silicate bonded products wherein the binder is the reaction product of lime and silica. In still other cases, low density mineral products are added to a high density binder System to provide lower weight and better insulating properties; for example, the use of expanded perlite in concrete.

A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

"After being welded in the weld plant, the 100-meter heavy rails with the specification of 60kg/m are found broken during the straightening process in four planes. Failure analysis is made using the optical microscope and SEM with the result showing that the broken rail contains the imperfection of protrusion which exists at the edge of rail foot, about 1 00mm away from the rail end. When the protrusion is peeled off by deseamer from rail surface, cold scratch is generated which causes the rail to be broken during the subsequent straightening process. By adjusting the roll diameter differences between top and bottom roll of universal finishing mill and the height of pass line, it is possible to maintain the rails flat when leaving the mill. This prevents the upsweep and downsweep phenomena and, thus, the imperfection of protrusion can be eliminated. IntroductionThe development of rail transit worldwide has entered into a new era since the 1960s. The hi-tech rail transit system has gradually gained recognition over the world. In particular, the emergence of new-type passenger trains represented by TGV of France, ICE of Germany and Shinkansen of Japan and heavy haul trains as well, has revealed the charming way and more prosperous future of the modern and hi-tech rail transit system to the people all over the world. It should be pointed out that rail transit system is still the most effective solution to traffic jams among urban cities and in the central cities during the 21 '1 century, especially high-speed railway and subway which take overwhelming advantages over air transport, marine transport and road transport in terms of high speed, high efficiency, safety, comfort, environment protection and high flow. With the trend of increasing speed and heavier load of trains, higher product quality of rails is demanded. The rails for passenger dedicated lines require high cleanness, high accuracy in size, high flatness, high surface quality and large size (100-meter fixed length). The rail quality has direct influence on the operating performance of rail and railway traffic safety. The 100-meter heavy rails with the specification of 60kg/m are broken subject to the straightening process in four planes after being welded in the weld plant. This paper analyzes the reason for rails being broken and provides the theoretical proof for determining the rolling process."

Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

Who We Are Farmland Hydro (FHLP) is a Limited Partnership formed by Farmland Industries, the largest U.S. farmers’ cooperative, located in Kansas City, MO, and Norsk Hydro, a large Norwegian company engaged in fertilizer, petroleum and the specialty metals industry. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. Other uses include animal feed, vitamins, medicine, light bulbs, soft drinks, film, flame resistant fabric, optical glass, toothpaste, bone china and other consumer products.

Sindesar Khurd Mine is situated in Rajasthan, India, and operated by Hindustan Zinc Ltd, under Vedanta Group. The base metal mine is high in reserves of Lead, Zinc and silver and has been producing since 2007 with initial production of 0.3 mtpa. Recently the mine has gained prominence as a base metal underground mine in introduction of latest mining techniques and achieving high production at lowest costs. The promising Lead-Zinc reserves of Sindesar Khurd Mine (SKM) and high-tech exploration adopted by Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), (Vedanta Group), raising the reserves and resources from a meager 9 Mt (1997) to 81 Mt (2012), has prompted HZL management to ramp up the mine production from 0.3 mtpa (2006-07) to 2 mtpa by 2013-14 with ambitious plans to reach 3.5mtpa subsequently (presently largest underground metal mine in India). The complete trackless system underground mine, recently equipped with latest leaky feeder communication system (unique in India), utilize modern drilling, mucking and hauling equipment aided with various utility/service vehicles. Excavation optimization and quality recovery maximization from the open and post filled stoping methods, continual expert analysis and feedback from International consultants like AMC (Australia) and SRK (UK), and involvement of renowned bodies in management excellence, have lead the mine towards highest productivity and lowest mine operating cost, earning the mine a prominent place in the global base metal industry. The paper deals with how the various challenges in mine planning and designing, mine development, operator skill, equipment introduction and maintenance, expertise availability, provide training and exposure to officials, prompt and effective communication/service, control of ground vibrations, maintain ventilation standards etc are faced in attaining high operational excellence and thus attain a record mine output/man shift (OMS) of 14 ton/man shift with targets to reach 20 ton/man /shift. Scientific designing using 2D/3D numerical mine-modeling techniques, faster stope sequencing with introduction of paste filling ( first time in India),latest leaky feeder communication system, control ground vibration to stringent standards using electronic delay system, faster raising techniques using raise borers to enhance development and ventilation, cavity scanners to monitor large stope voids, fast shaft sinking at 100 m/month(Chinese expertise) and maintaining adequate ventilation with close software monitoring are some of the highlights discussed in the paper towards achieving the targets.
