A spectrophotometric method for the determination of small amounts of copper in tungsten metal powder using the principle of solvent extraction has been developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The metallic sample is dissolved in hydrogen peroxide, tartaric acid added, the pH adjusted, and the excess peroxide destroyed by boiling. Copper is reduced to the cuprous state, and the reagent neocuproine (2,9-dimethy1-1,10-phenanthroline) is added to form a colored complex with the copper. This colored complex is then extracted into chloroform and the absorbance of the separated chloroform layer measured on a spectrophotometer. Copper contents as low as 1 p.p.m. (parts per million) can be determined. The method is limited to finely divided tungsten powder. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in developing more sensitive methods for the determination of trace impurities in high-purity tungsten prompted an investigation of the possibility of using solvent extraction-colorimetric methods. The organic reagents now commercially available make possible many extremely sensitive colorimetric methods for the determination of metallic ions. Extraction of the colored complex into a small volume of organic phase can be used to further increase sensitivity (4) .4/ This general approach has the added advantage that no special equipment beyond that normally found in an analytical laboratory is required.

This report presents depth and producing rate statistics pertaining to oil reservoirs (or fields) in each of the 14 States that produced more than 20 million bbl of oil during 1965. The combined oil production was about 2.6 billion bbl, or 96 pct of the U.S. total. Data are presented for each of the 14 States, each Texas Railroad Commission district, and four geographical areas of Louisiana. About 8 pct of the total oil produced in the 14 States was from depths of lees than 2,000 ft, 24 pct from 2,000 to 4,000 ft, 22 pct from 4,000 to 6,000 ft, 16 pct from 6,000 to 8,000 ft, and 30 pct from 8,000 ft and deeper. The average production per well in the 14 States ranged from 4.4 bopd for wells less than 2,000 ft deep to 57.6 bopd for wells 8,000 it and deeper. Data indicate that 9.5 pct of the 460,968 wells produced more than 1.2 billion bbl or 46.6 pct of the total oil. Oil production from reservoirs (or fields) not undergoing stimulative recovery operations, such as steam, air, gas, or water injection, wee about 1.1 billion bbl or 42.1 pct of the total.

THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit. That is to say, the benefits of technological progress, mass production, and low unit costs must be promptly passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices-giving more for each dollar.

"High-strength cable bolts have been used for ground support in underground coal mines for many years. Cable bolts are routinely used as secondary ground support in numerous longwall gateroad support applications, areas that possibly experience the most severe conditions in current underground coal mining. Additionally, when mining ground conditions deteriorate, engineers oftentimes recommend cable supports as a principal solution because of the established credibility for successful ground control. Nevertheless, there is still a reluctance to utilize non-tensioned cable supports as an effective primary roof support alternative.This paper provides historical and recently documented examples of non-tensioned cable supports utilized as an effective primary ground support method in a western U.S. underground coal mine, and it will continue the technical discussion between the differences of various degrees of tension in cable supports with respect to ground behavior and reactions.INTRODUCTIONResin-grouted cable supports are widely used to support difficult ground conditions throughout the world. Through the use of innovative applications and configurations they have proven to be a major paradigm shift in roof support and ground control technology in the U.S. (Tadolini and Koch, 1993; McDonnell et al., 1995; Tadolini and Gallagher, 1994; Tadolini and Trackemas, 1994)Today, the basic cable bolt support consists of a high-strength steel cable installed in bore holes that range in diameter from 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 in) depending on the strand size and drilling equipment. Cables are offered in both bright and galvanized, for corrosion protection, and range in capacity from about 30 to 60 tons. An example of a resin-grouted cable bolt and the key components is shown in Figure 1. The steel cables are flexible and the support length is not limited by the height of the opening. Lengths of up to 10 m (32 ft) have been supported with high pattern densities when standing supports were not operationally feasible. The most common lengths are 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft). An important physical characteristic is that PC-strand has an ASTM minimum elongation requirement of 4%. For comparison purposes, the ASTM 432-08 Standard Specifications for Roof and Rock Bolts and Accessories specifies elongation requirements for traditional roof bolts are a minimum of 12% for grade 40, 9% for grade 60, and 8% for grade 75 materials, respectively. Traditional roof bolts can stretch and elongate twice the length that cable bolts can, which makes design considerations challenging."

As a follow-on to previous investigations, reduced treatment levels for the optimum fire retardant/preservative system were evaluated. An impregnation of 3.5 lbs/ft3 of Fyreprufe followed by 3.5 mils of Albi 107A plus an Albi 144 top coat provides adequate flammability and flame spread protection. However, there is a significant loss in compressive strength at this retention level, particularly parallel to the grain. A pilot-size pressure impregnation cell was installed for use in treating larger quantities of wood. Based on the optimum fire retardant/preservative treatment system - Fyreprufe/ACC impregnation followed by Albi 107A/144 intumescent paint - a model treatment pro¬cess was developed, capable of handling 3 million board feet per year. Associated annualized costs per thousand board feet (K bd. ft.) for treating 12" x 12" timber were calculated to be: Impregnation: $-63.00/K bd. ft. Coating: $112.00/K bd. ft. A literature search was conducted to identify materials and techniques suitable for a localized stench warning system for heated mine timbers. Based on this review, a number of stench warning concepts were developed. Those based on surface coating were given a preliminary laboratory evaluation.

High chromium white irons can be formulated to provide required combinations of abrasion and erosion wear resistance, toughness and capability to withstand corrosion attack. As a consequence, they are used widely in casting form throughout the mining/mineral processing industry, particularly as components for slurry pumps and also as mill and crusher liners, laminated wear plates in chutes and hoppers and in valves, nozzles and cyclones. Traditional cast chromium molybdenum and high chromium white irons for wear applications are covered in ASTM A532 Classes 11 and 111 and are also available as comparable proprietary alloys. They rely on heat-treated, hypoeutectic microstructures containing a high volume fraction of very hard eutectic/secondary metal carbides and martensite to provide extremely high wear resistance. The ability to increase the carbide volume fraction and hence achieve higher wear resistance, has been limited because of severe casting difficulties encountered when carbon and chromium contents are raised and hypereutectic alloys with structures also containing coarse acicular primary metal carbides are produced. The limitation has been overcome and cast hypereutectic chromium white iron pump components have established themselves in a wide variety of mineral processing service applications. Comparisons will be made between the microstructures and wear test performance data for the various alloy types and details will be provided of the service performance improvements that have been achieved through the use of hypereutectic chromium white irons.

This paper deals with the concept of a Quality-Assurance Manual, to the ISO-9001 Level, for quarry blasting in the urban environment. A case history of the incident, which led to its development, is presented in addition to three other case histories. These case histories are related to the potential effectiveness of a well thought-out and applied Quality-Assurance Manual in the conclusions. The basic principle, behind the development of a Q-A manual, is to supply a maximum of quality assurance with a minimum of disturbance to the operation of the quarry. This requires that every intervener in the quarry blasting operations, from management to labourer, be made responsible for the quality of their work. This basic goal can be achieved with a minimum of paper work and added bureaucracy. The manual respects the ISO principle that: Q-A Manuals are not recipe books and should allow for continuing technological developments.

BRIEFLY stated, the history of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is the story of how a group of men, working for ten years as officers without salaries and stockholders without dividends, developed a small mine in Missouri into what became a large and prosperous corporation. Their courage and faith in the scattered surface deposits of lead coupled with the management's engineering vision and sound financial judgment should prove an inspiration to present-day mining operators and investors. In 1717, John Law's company, known as "The Company of the West," was formed in France and letters patent were granted, for a period of 25 years by Louis XV, for exploration in the Mississippi River Valley. One of the underlying purposes of the expedition, headed by Mr. Renault and Mr. La Motte, a French metallurgist, was development of the lead mines in the area now known as Southeast Missouri.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

"Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised.In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations:• Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie. to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits.• Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant.Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation.Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early 1980's. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill® projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product.JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry.They include:• Commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount).• Monographs (Comminution and Blasting).• Technologies (Mine-to-Mill® and flotation optimisation).• Hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift® and the Mineral Liberation Analyser).This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits."

An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of 'fossil' convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

THE presence of deformation bands in cold-worked metals is known to influence the development of deformation textures1 but has not been considered in any theoretical treatments. At the present time the most rigorous theory of deformation textures appears to be based on Taylor's concept of homogeneous deformation of a crystal within a polycrystalline aggregate.' For each crystal the Taylor theory allows the operation of several equivalent combinations of five or more slip systems. Hence deformation bands can arise from the operation of a separate combination of slips in each of several portions within a crystal. On the other hand, a second type of band may occur as a consequence of slip on systems other than those selected on the basis on homogeneous deformation. This type appears to be associated with crystals of symmetrical orientations, such as the [loo] and [lll.] axial orientations in drawn wires of fcc single crystals studied by Ahlborn.3 In this note we propose a simple mechanism of deformation banding of the second type, and compare the theoretical results for wire drawing of [loo] and [Ill] with Ahlborn's observations. In outlini the model requires that the work to accomplish a given overall shape change by banding be less than or equal to the work to accomplish the same change by homogeneous deformation. While the work by homogeneous deformation, WH = ?T ;dri, can be calculated exactly by the equivalent methods of Taylor2 or of Bishop and Hill,4 the work by banding, WB, is less certain. The latter consists of 1) Wi, work by slip within a band, 2) Wb, work associated with formation of a boundary between bands, and 3) Wc, work to correct the difference in shape change arising from banding and homogeneous deformation. The Wi term can be evaluated explicitly for a band with an assumed set of slip systems, but a satisfactory analysis of Wb and Wc has not been obtained. Since WB = Wi + Wb + Wc WH, for banding to occur, however, a necessary condition is Wi = WH . Hence it seems reasonable to choose a band with the lowest value of Wi among competing bands consistent with Wi = WH, and then minimize Wb and Wc by arranging the physical configuration of the selected band. Wc is minimized by combining neighboring bands such that their net strain matches the macroscopic strain as closely as possible, and Wb is minimized by enforcing strain compatibility across the boundary between two neighboring bands, similar to the case of a grain boundary.5 It is realized that this procedure is not completely satisfactory, but it does seem to explain Ahlborn's observations reasonably well. The procedure is now outlined for the two corner orientations. a) [l00]. Fig. 1 shows a (100) stereographic projection. The results of the Taylor analysis for axi-symmetric flow by homogeneous deformation6 show that, while [loo] itself is unstable, the rotation of the tensile axis will nevertheless be confined to within about 15 deg from [loo]. Alternatively, less work may be expended by banding with slip on a pair of systems with primary-conjugate relationship, e.g., (ll1)[10l.I + (li1.)[110]. TWINNING in magnesium is known to occur profusely under certain conditions, and when it occurs in polycrystalline materials it brings about a partial or even a complete change in the preferred orientation. The amount of research on this subject, however, has not been in proportion to its importance as a mechanism of deformation and reorientation. Much of the research has been limited to twinning in single crystals. The present study' concerns polycrystalline sheet, and is an investigation of the twinning produced by plastic deformation as a function of the following variables: I. Direction and type of deformation. 2. Amount of deformation. 3. Speed of deformation. 4. Temperature of deformation. 5. Composition and temper of the sheet. 6. Twins previously produced. 7. Twins previously produced, then annealed. By proper control of these variables it is shown that, on a laboratory scale, samples can be produced that are free from preferred orientations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The materials used were samples of commercial magnesium-alloy sheets with nominal compositions given in Table I. [ ] X-ray diffraction was used in most of this work to detect the twins and to estimate the amount of twinning. Since twinning on {102} planes causes a reorientation of the crystal lattice by 86°, it is very easy to study with X-ray diffraction patterns, particularly if one notices the diffraction ring from the basal plane the 002 reflection. By properly directing the X-ray beam, it is possible to produce 002 reflections from twinned material at, say, the 6 and 12 o'clock positions on the 002 ring, with the untwinned material reflecting to 3 and 9 o'clock positions; and by judging the relative intensity of the arcs on the diffraction ring at these positions, it is possible to judge the amount of twinned material relative to the untwinned. One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. "We have developed a technology to improve the quality of low-grade concentrates containing minerals of tantalum, niobium and tin on the basis of given conception by the way of improving selectivity and using certain reagents composition. The basic collector presents a traditional or complex-forming collector used together with organic diphilic reagents – the secondary reagents regarding the basic flotation regiment, capable of forming associates with the main collector on the surface of the mineral, thus altering the interaction energy. In the given process the main collector is the fraction of hydroxamic acids C7-C9, the reagent of the secondary action – sulphosuccinamate, which added in moderate concentrations range provides for a synergistic effect.We have determined the parameters of the process stability and necessary modifying reagents for a selective recovery of tantalum, niobium and tin minerals from refractory products. Variants have been studied where the main collector and the secondary action reagent were substituted with some more efficient flotation reagents. A possibility of a more flexible reagent compounding for the process has been shown. The flotation process is highly stable regards the saline composition of the liquid phase in the pulp. It can operate under conditions of the complete water recycling with the total salt content up to 12 kg/m3, iron up to 1.2 kg/m3.The given results consider the efficiency testing of the suggested technology for the gravitation products, which were obtained from ores of various genesis and contain large quantity of the most refractory minerals, such as topaz (80%), gamet (55%), tourmaline (30%). High selectivity of the process has been registered with the metal recovery about 92-98%, which appears to be similar to hydrometallurgical operations under certain conditions."

The Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa is the first mine in the Western World to introduce resin-in­pulp technology for the recovery of gold from a cyanide-leached slurry. Located in the Eastern Transvaal region of the country, the plant processes approximately 375 metric tons• of ore per day, of which over 90 per cent is mined in an open pit adjacent to the metaflurgical plant, while the remaining 5 to 10 per cent is trucl<ed in from two small high-grade deposits, located about 10 kilometers from the plant. The gold grade in the open pit is about 1 git, while the values m the two high-grade deposits range between 5 and 15 git. At the current treatment rate, the proven reserves m the three locations will last about another 10 years. Early testwork indicated that the ore was not well suited to conventional filtration processing or to heap leaching because of its high cfay content, and that carbon-m-pulp (CIP) would probably prove to be the most viable metallurgical route. Tcstwork to establish the feasibility of CIP for this application was carried out at Mintek in 1985. This worl<, which was based on batch-leaching and carbon-loading tests, indicated that CIP was technically feasible, but that both the rate of gold loading and the gold-loading capacity of the carbon were inferior to those obtained with Witwatersrand ores. The poor adsorption characteristics of the carbon were attributed to the abnormally high concentration of natural organic compounds (humates and fulvates) in the ore. Batch tests were therefore also carried out with strong-base resins, since resins are known (1] to be far less susceptible to organic fouling than is activated carbon. The results were very promising, and pointed to fast kinetics and a high loading capacity. (Fig. 1 ). Notwithstanding these findings, it was decided to recover gold with activated carbon at Golden Jubilee Mine because the CIP process was, by then, well established in South Africa and elsewhere in the world, whereas resin-in-pulp (RIP) was unproven technology. The r>lant was commissioned in September 1986 and, for 18 months, operated in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) configuration, i.e. with a total of . six leach tanks, the last four of which contained activated carbon. As could have been predicted from the laboratory results, the performance of the CIL plant was generally poor, low gold loadings on the carbon (less than 1500 git) and high losses of soluble gold (0.2 to 0.3 p.p.m.) bemg characteristic of the operation. El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. Mientras que el segundo está basado en técnicas de estimación paramétrica, redes neuronales y ecuaciones matemáticas obtenidas por regresión estadística, que simula el comportamiento del sistema de energía eléctrica de la fundición. "This paper details the process and methodology followed to rehabilitate a rectangular ventilation shaft, situated in the Free State region of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields in South Africa. The shaft consists of seven compartments where self-mining of the sidewalls had taken place and damage to the decayed steel work in the shaft had taken place, thus limiting access down the shaft. The paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during the project and may provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The ventilation shaft forms part of the Phakisa Mine, situated in the Welkom area of the Free State province of South Africa, and is located in the Southern part of the Witwatersrand Basin, one of the world’s largest known and richest gold deposits (Figure 1).As is typical in South African gold mines situated in the Witwatersrand basin, the shaft is 1 770 metres deep (below collar). The shaft was sunk during the early 1940’s and comprised a rectangular shape with 7 compartments, used for both rock hoisting and men and material winding, respectively, with a single lift “Mary-Anne” compartment. Early in 2003, the mine decided to change the shaft from a downcast hoisting shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft. The conveyances, ropes, winders and headgear (head frame) were removed and replaced with a high volume fan delivering 323m³/s of air at a pressure of 4.2Pa on surface. The up-cast velocity in the shaft was 6.5m/s, however this reduced significantly with the scaling of the shaft and the restrictions at shaft bottom. Although Harmony had converted the shaft from a downcast service shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft some years back, the shaft steel work in the barrel of the shaft was left intact. Over the years, the steelwork in the shaft had decayed (rust and grime) and portions of this steelwork fell down the shaft. Concurrent with the decaying steel work, portions of the shaft lining had collapsed and it was getting progressively worse."
