The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

"Comparative surface analysis of floated and rejected free gold grains from a number of full scale benefication plants and from pilot plant testwork, has shown silver (the most common impurity in gold) and sulphur invariably in greater concentration on floated gold grains, implying that they assisted gold flotation (gold activators). Collector loading measurements on individual gold grains from concentrates of staged rougher flotation tests on a cyclone U/F product of a pyritic gold ore, revealed first progressively lower concentrations of the collector monomer on gold from each follow-up concentrate and secondly a direct proportionality between the surface concentration of silver and the collector monomer. These two observations leave no doubt that silver activates gold and that collector monomers play a significant, previously not fully recognized role in gold flotation.INTRODUCTIONGold to some degree is naturally floatable in industrial systems, which means that it can be recovered without collector addition (Marsden and House, 1992). This is due to the adsorption of hydrocarbons and deposition of sulphur, which are dependent on the metallic properties of gold, particularly its high electrical conductivity, which allows surface electrochemical reactions to occur catalytically and selectively. Cyclic voltammetry has shown that gold can be rendered hydrophobic by deposition of a surface layer of sulphur (Sº) from S2- and HS- solutions (Walker et al., 1984). Twenty monolayers of sulphur were required to produce a hydrophobic gold surface.However, no sulphide flotation plant relies solely on the natural floatability of gold for its recovery. Gold hydrophobicity is enhanced by the addition of flotation collectors such as xanthates (X), dithiophosphates (DTP), dithiophosphinates (DTPI), mercaptobenzothiolates (MBC) etc., as used in sulphide mineral flotation (Dekok, 1973: Adams et al., 1986). The mechanism invoked in enhancing the hydrophobicity of pure gold with the aforementioned four groups of collectors is similar to that of pyrite, whereby collector anions are oxidized at the gold surface to form dimers (Groot, 1987; Marsden and House, 1992; Basilio et al., 1992) As an example, xanthate ions are oxidized at the gold surface to form the neutral dimer dixanthogen (X2):"

After evaluating preceding studies and designs of lightweight supports, ESD selected the all-hydraulic and the hydromechanical concepts for detailed design and fabrication. Further analysis and testing showed that the all-hydraulic design was economically justified and met all the crucial engineering, manufacturing, and design criteria identified during the evaluation phase. Following Bureau of Mines approval of the detailed design, four all-hydraulic support models were fabricated. Once functional and structural testing was successfully completed, 40 additional units were constructed and distributed for in-mine testing. The units were very well-liked by all three demonstration mines. The wide- spread interest in supports for seam heights greater than 8 feet led to expansion of the design data package. ESD designed four basic models to cover the new height range, but no hardware has yet been fabricated for the new design.

The former Homestake gold mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The deep laboratory and associated research campus will be developed at approximately the 7700-ft level. Plans also include the development of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at the 4850-ft level. After the mine?s pumps were shut off in June, 2003, water levels rose to approximately the 4650-ft level by early 2008. Pumps in the 8150-ft deep mine were turned on again for dewatering in April, 2008. Instrumentation is being installed in the mine to measure water-level declines during pumping, for later analysis of permeability and related hydraulic properties of the formation. Pressure-sensitive transducers and data loggers will provide real-time information on water levels that will be available to interested parties. Quality of the water also will be monitored as it is pumped from the mine. I

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

"Black calcium cyanide is utilized mainly as a reagent for gold extraction. It is produced by reacting calcium cyanamide, sodium chloride and calcium carbide at temperatures in the range of 1200°C to 1400°C in a smothered arc furnace. The equivalent sodium cyanide content of the product is in the range of 45% to 50% and the calcium cyanamide conversion efficiency is in the range of 90% to 95%. Since black cyanide contains impurities such as salt and lime and also because the conversion efficiencies are below 100%, the product contains unwanted materials which significantly increase the shipping costs.The impurity content of the raw materials can not be lowered without increasing their cost and/or the processes to produce them, and therefore the present research was focussed on studying those factors which affect the cyanide grade. The major variables investigated were: the heating rate, the reaction temperature, the salt to cyanamide ratio, the nitrogen content of the calcium cyanamide, moisture additions and calcium carbide additions. It was found that each of these variables had a significant effect on the product grade. The highest cyanide content of the product was obtained for salt to cyanamide mass ratios of 0.55 to 0.60. The salt reduces the decomposition rate of the cyanide and, therefore, at low salt to cyanamide ratios and at higher temperatures, the product grade is decreased. It is likely that the salt evaporates at the higher reaction temperatures and this decreases the cyanide capacity of the melt. High heating rates minimize the residence time and thus salt evaporation is reduced and higher grades can be obtained. As expected, the cyanide content increased with the nitrogen content of the cyanamide. Calcium carbide additions resulted in an increase in the product grade. The presence of small amounts of moisture in the charge caused a significant decrease in the cyanide content of the black cyanide. An equilibrium reaction is postulated in order to explain the black cyanide process and in particular the effect of calcium carbide on the product grade."

THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

My colleague, Hugh Wilmer (who will be speaking to you a little later), and I are involved as research analysts in the research and writing of published reports containing recommendations on the buying or selling of North American and South African gold and silver mining shares. Our talk this morning will focus on the gold mining operating costs of North American and South African gold producers. However, I am not going to bore you with reams of statistics on the operating costs of large numbers of gold mining operations; how meaningful would this data be to you? Instead, I will discuss what the investor should look for, and how he should use this knowledge in making his investment decision.

Understanding the appropriate gold recovery to associate with copper recovery when assessing laboratory testing on porphyry deposits is often complicated by several factors including variable and/or complex mineralogy, and the variability contributed by the low Au content of the various flotation products. As a result, gold recovery is often underestimated and the value contributed by the gold to project economics is less than it should be, a problem that could influence overall project viability. Typically, for these types of deposits, the gold recovery is found to be lower than the copper recovery. In this unique project, having the objective of seeking a better understanding of gold recovery relative to copper recovery, mill feed samples from a selection of six operating world-class Cu-Au low-grade deposits were collected along with the mill metallurgical results for the corresponding sample periods. The samples were subjected to laboratory flotation tests, as well as the Laplante gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test, mineralogical assessment and cyanidation leaching. The aim was to better understand the copper and gold recovery relationship, the links between laboratory and plant flotation performance, the influence of mineralogical differences, and the potential for enhancing gold recovery by gravity recovery techniques. A new correlation of copper and gold recoveries based on the results is presented in the paper. The results showed that the link between copper and gold recoveries established in the best laboratory tests were maintained in the plant results, and further, that the potential for improving Au recovery by gravity or flash flotation methods is directly proportional to the amount of gold greater than 75 microns.

MANY investigations have been made concerning the nature of plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals either in the form of polycrystalline materials or in the form of single crystals. However, similar work on strip materials composed of large grains as thick as the strip and having a high degree of preferred crystal orientation has not been carried out extensively. Such materials are ideal not only for studying changes in single crystals under conditions where neighboring grains exert their influences but also for obtaining the, complete change in orientation of a grain or group of grains during the course of plastic deformation and subsequent recrystallization. It is well known that first-order twins in the form of Neumann bands may be produced during the plastic deformation of ferrite crystals, particularly silicon ferrite crystals.1-3 Furthermore, it is believe that high-stress regions exist in the vicinity of these bands4a and it has been said that these banded regions would be active in recrystallization processes.5 Evidence to that effect in silicon ferrite had already been presented with photomicrographs showing recrystallization among Neumann bands during the early stages of recrystallization.5,6 Similar evidence has been published for nonferrous metals.5 Merging of fine parallel deformation bands during annealing to form twin bands of ordinary appearance in alpha brass has been offered not only as evidence of an active role being played by mechanical twins but also as evidence that such twins existed prior to recrystallization.5 Proof that such new structures are actually first-order twins, or even twins at all, must be considered inadequate except for those cases where X-ray or optical data have been obtained to confirm the necessary orientation relationship.7,8 A. B. Greninger has obtained excellent iliustrations of annealing twins in alpha irons Since his material was previously deformed by sharp hammering, a process that generally induces Neumann bands, the existence of twins following annealing might suggest that they grew from mechanical twins. In connection with transformation twins in alpha iron, Greninger reported that grains containing. three twin orientations occurred rarely and none occurred with three sets of well-developed bands.9 The work at the Pittsfield Works Laboratory on silicon ferrite in the form of large-grained strip steel deformed a small amount and annealed to partially recrystallize the grains indicates that the deformation and recrystallization processes that lead to annealing twins involve more complex processes than the formation of Neumann bands and the growth of such bands. Some groups of annealing twins are obtained which contain not only three well-developed twin structures, but also contain more than one order of twins. It is also shown, in one case, that an interrelated group of twins did not arise within one single parent grain and, furthermore, orientations of grains in the group

All the cycle for conversion of natural and reprocessed uranium of ROSATOM’s “TVEL” Fuel Company is concentrated at the Siberian Chemical Plant. Conversion capacities are located on two sites, i.e. the Radiochemical Plant, which refines feedstock, and the Conversion Plant, which produces uranium oxides and uranium hexafluoride. Liquid radioactive waste arising in the process, after pretreatment, is transferred to a dedicated national operator for underground disposal. Environmental strategies pursued by the Fuel Company involve the introduction of process solutions intended to eliminate liquid radioactive waste and convert it into a solid phase. In the 5–7 years coming, work will be performed to refurbish and upgrade conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant that will principally change its radioactive waste management scheme. This paper describes the current waste management scheme and sets out planned schemes for management of natural and reprocessed uranium waste, which will be implemented in the refurbishment of conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant. The new technologies for the management of liquid radioactive waste from uranium conversion described in the present paper have an undeniable advantage over the current technology mainly due to significantly less environmental harm.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated a process to produce titanium powder directly from titanium salts. If successful, such a process could lower the cost and increase the use of titanium. In this study, K2TiF6, K2TiF3, and TiF3 were reduced with potassium in the temperature range of 650° to 750° C. Under certain conditions, titanium powder 1.6 to 3.3 microns in size was produced. After leaching the product with a 0.1M HCl solution, powder impurities as low as 0.04 pct potassium and 0.28 pct fluorine were obtained. However, oxygen levels of over 1 pct and the frequent formation of insoluble byproducts demonstrate the need for further research to make the powder suitable for powder metallurgy applications.

The formation of grain boundary precipitates has been studied in Ag-5.64 wt pcl Al alloys at 688°C. Large-grain specinzerzs were used and the boundary misorientation measured by X-ray diffraction. At low-angle grain boundrrries Primary sideplates form. u)hile abore a 17-deg misorientation lenticular precipitates predominate. Growth of the lenticular precipitates was studied on individual grain boundaries using a statistical technique. The thickening and lengthening rates appeared to be independent of &apos;pain boundary misorientation, indicating that grain boundary diffusion was not significant in this system. The precipitates grew urith constant shape, with both the length and thickness increasing parabolically with time. The parabolic lengthening rates were unexpected since previous theory and experimerztal results had indicated linear growth. By approximating the shape of the precipitate to that of an oblate spheroid grouling with constant shape an equivalent diffusion coefficienl was calculated. The zlalue obtained was in good agreement with nleasurements obtained fron, diffusiorz couples. IF a single-phase alloy is heated or cooled to a temperature such that the phase becomes supersaturated, there is a tendency for a second phase to precipitate from it in order to remove the supersaturation. Precipitation takes place initially on grain boundaries due to preferred heterogeneous nucleation, but subsequently Widmans kitten plates may form in the grain interiors if the grain size and supersaturation are sufficient. The type of grain boundary precipitate formed depends on the nature of the boundary. Aaronson1 and clark2 have shown that grain boundary misorientation can be characterized by the simple parameter R, where and X, Y, and Z represent the minimum rotations about three orthogonal axes required to bring the two lattices forming the grain boundary into coincidence. The maximum value for R is 60 deg. In using this parameter the orientation of the grain boundary itself is, of course, neglected. However it was found in both Fe-si3 and A1-Ag2 that the precipitate shape depended only on the parameter R. Clark found that the vast majority of precipitates formed were allo-triomorphs— lens-shaped precipitates that grew along the grain boundaries. At low-angle boundaries, however, (R < 15 deg) Widmanstatten sideplates nucleated at the grain boundaries and grew into the adjacent grains. It has been reported that the rate of growth of grain boundary precipitates is controlled by diffusion within the supersaturated phase.&apos; The theories which have been developed for growth rates have assumed the diffusion coefficient constant over the composition range of the supersaturated phase. This is a fairly good approximation if the composition range involved is not large. "INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."

Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate&apos; profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and &apos;29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

"To prevent the propagation of mine explosions, the Bureau of Mines recommends:1. That all coal and lignite mines, except anthracite mines shall be rock dusted.2. That rock dust shall be distributed upon top, bottom, and sides of all underground openings of every description, to within. at least 4o feet of all working faces and the areas not rock dusted shall be kept wet.3. That the rock dust shall be maintained in, such quantity that the incombustible material in representative samples of dust collected shall not be less than 65 percent. Where methane gas is present in the ventilating current, the minimum percentage of incombustible matter in the mine dust shall be increased 1 percent for each 0.1 percent of methane.4. That when the rock dust in any area becomes caked so thatit cannot be dispersed readily as a cloud in the air, that part of the mine shall be redusted immediately.5. That the dust to be used shall not contain more than 5 percent of combustible matter nor. more than 25 percent of quartz or free silica; all of the dust shall pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 60 percent or more shall pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the dust shall not absorb moisture from the air to such an extent as to cake and destroy its effectiveness as a dry dust.6. That rock-dust barriers shall not be regarded as a substitute for generalized rock dusting.Research and experience have shown that maintenance of an adequate percentage of rock dust in all underground openings, whether gassy or not, of bituminous and subbituminous coal and lignite mines (anthracite dust does not propagate explosions) is the best means of preventing coal dust explosions. In rare instances where all fine coal particles on the floor, ribs, roof, and timbers are in a muddy condition continuously rock dusting is unnecessary.The term ""underground openings"" refers to all unsealed openings whether they contain track or not, and includes rooms, entries, crosscuts, breakthroughs, rock tunnels, slopes, haulageways, airways, and travelingways. The sealing of unused or abandoned parts of a mine in accordance with Mine Safety Board Decision avoids the necessity of rock-dusting the sealed-off openings.The kind of rock dust to be used should have the approval of the State Mine Inspection Service. Pure limestone or pare dolomite produces the best rock dust, as these dusts have low silica content, little tendency to cake, and a light color that aids illumination. To reduce tendency to cake it is preferable that not more than 75 percent of the dust pass the 200-mesh sieve. All sieve sizes are those of the Tyler screen scale. If the mine personnel is repeatedly exposed to breathing high concentrations of the dust, the percentage of free and combined silica should be as low as possible, preferably less than 5 percent. Persons engaged in the application of rock dust should wear approved dust respirators as listed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7030 or revisions thereof."

Through the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-halance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment. to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed. Introduction With the decreasing rate of discovery of new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development, evaluation, and production of existing reserves. From the nation&apos;s viewpoint, the necessity of conserving resources is obvious. From the operator&apos;s viewpoint, the problem is to lengthen the period of profitable operation, in an attempt to increase the return on his investment. To do this the operator must take advantage of the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Natural water encroachment, the nemesis of profitable operation in the past, can be and is being harnessed to produce a greater oil recovery during the stage of flowing production. Proper evaluation of water encroachment rates and a fuller under- standing of reservoir behavior dictate the appropriate production procedures. Complacency in hit and miss production is obsolete. Oil production must and will approach the efficiency of other businesses, such as manufacturing. A manufacturer will not place an article on the market until he has fully investigated the processes involved, additional investment in equipment, costs of production, and expected profits. These may be modified by actual experience at a later date, but at least he begins with an idea of expected return. The petroleum engineer has many tools, both figuratively and literally, at his disposal. Physical data such as core analyses, electrical logs, bottom-hole sample analyses, and bottom-hole pressures are accumulated extensively. Advances in the analytics of fluid flow have kept pace with the advances in measurement of physical data. It is the purpose of this paper to show how some of these records may be analyzed to define certain phases of reservoir behavior.

Through the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-halance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment. to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed. Introduction With the decreasing rate of discovery of new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development, evaluation, and production of existing reserves. From the nation&apos;s viewpoint, the necessity of conserving resources is obvious. From the operator&apos;s viewpoint, the problem is to lengthen the period of profitable operation, in an attempt to increase the return on his investment. To do this the operator must take advantage of the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Natural water encroachment, the nemesis of profitable operation in the past, can be and is being harnessed to produce a greater oil recovery during the stage of flowing production. Proper evaluation of water encroachment rates and a fuller under- standing of reservoir behavior dictate the appropriate production procedures. Complacency in hit and miss production is obsolete. Oil production must and will approach the efficiency of other businesses, such as manufacturing. A manufacturer will not place an article on the market until he has fully investigated the processes involved, additional investment in equipment, costs of production, and expected profits. These may be modified by actual experience at a later date, but at least he begins with an idea of expected return.
