Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time-dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct-shear tests on mud-stoneovercored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

"The diverting of men from industry to combat in the world's war focused the attention of the operators in this country upon mechanical means of doing things. The demand for man-power -was so insistent that every available agency for multiplying it had to be employed. It was during the 1period of the war and immediately thereafter that development of the use of underground loading devices made most rapi4 progress. In all parts of the United States, mining engineers and mine managers were diligent in their efforts to develop mechanical loaders. The mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in every section of the country have secured, with the cooperation of the mine operators, data on the actual performance of the mechanical shovels in their districts, and have made them available to the author of this paper.No effort has been made to discuss exhaustively the subject of underground loading devices. It has been the object to collect together in one paper, records of the performance of all machines now in actual use. Improvements in the design of machines are constantly being made the performance records given in this paper relate to operation prior to March 1 1 1921. The records prior to 1920 cay not fully represent the work that could be accomplished with the present models of the same machine.The data secured are given exactly as reported by the mine operators. Since this data were collected there have been two underground loaders, of a different design, put into operation in the iron mines of the Lake Superior District. One is the John Mayne Sub-level loader, being tried by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Ishpeming, Mich., and the other is the Cole-Goudie shovel, being tried by the Oliver Mining Company, at Ironwood, Mich. No information has been secured regarding the performance of either of these machines."

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center,1 has developed and field tested a spatial, spectral sensor for measuring the thickness of mineral deposits. Knowledge of the dielectric constant of the material is not necessary because the electrical properties of the media are determined automatically along with the thickness or distance measurement. The technology was developed to measure the thickness of coal remaining in the roof and floor of a mine or the thickness of a coal pillar remaining between two mining entries for the purpose of guiding a mining machine. However, field tests have shown the new technique is equally valuable for measuring the thickness of each layer in a multilayer manmade structure such as highway paving or building foundations and the thickness of geological deposits other than coal, such as, salt, granite and sandstone. The noncontacting electromagnetic technique uses spatial modulation created by moving a simple dipole sensor antenna in a direction along each axes to be measured while the complex reflection coefficient is measured at multiple frequencies over a two-to-one bandwidth. The antenna motion imparts spatial modulation to the data and enables frequency domain signal processing to solve the problem of media, target and antenna dispersion. The technique overcomes the problem of multipath reflections from nearby metal structures and avoids the use of radio frequency absorbing material. In its present form the system measures material thickness of zero to over 3 m to within ±2.5 cm accuracy. The system parameters are variable to suit the application but for most applications default values of 40 cm antenna motion with measurements made at 401 frequencies from 0.6 to 1.4 GHz at each of 32 antenna positions with a power level of 0 dBm or less are more than adequate to provide a satisfactory signal-to noise ratio. In the range of 0 to 10 m the system operates in the continuous wave mode and by simply turning off the transmitter for ranges beyond 10 m the problems of time domain processing are entirely avoided. The technique can be implemented with a vector network analyzer, a servo controlled L-band antenna positioner, an IEEE488 bus controller and a process computer. An electronics package designed and constructed to operate in the harsh mining environment and providing 1, 2 or 3 dimensional image presentation is being evaluated as a replacement for the network analyzer. "COAL MINING at Canmore, Alberta, began in 1886 and continued there until July 1979. A comprehensive review of the Canmore operations is not available, but the following notes have been prepared to accompany references where more complete information about the operations and problems encountered may be found. The coal measures at Canmore occur in the Kootenay formation of Lower Cretaceous age, and at least twelve seams of varying thickness and horizontal extent have been recognized. The coal, of high quality, ranges from semi-anthracite in the lower seams to low-volatile bituminous in the upper seams. The strata of the Canmore area form an asymmetric syncline, the western limb being overturned to vertical by the Palaeozoic strata of the Mount Rundle Range. The eastern limb is more gently sloping, its dip ranging from IO to about 40 degrees. Tectonic movements have created a troubled and complex coal field. The seams were initially not regularly or uniformly deposited, and mountain-building activity folded and faulted the strata and in many places sheared and crushed the original structures of the coal(l,2,3,4,5). The lack of continuity of the seams, and changes in thickness and inclination, made longrange mine planning difficult and necessitated flexible methods of work, and the local disturbances sometimes created problems in roof support and contributed to the occurrence of sudden outbursts of coal and gas. Almost all of the coal was produced from underground operations but a few relatively small V-cut mines were worked along surface outcrops. These have all been filled in and revegetated. The basic method of underground work was by room-and-pillar, but many variations in layout and sequences were employed. Gangways were driven along the strike and pillars were formed by raises or slopes and crosscuts. Pillars were recovered to the extent that ground conditions permitted by splitting or taking 'skips' from the sides of the raises or splits or crosscuts. Because of the variety of conditions that existed in the field a considerable range of cutting, loading and support methods were employed, including hand-loading, slushers and scrapers, duckbills and shaker conveyors, mobile loaders and continuous miners. Except for the coal obtained by continuous miners most of the coal was broken out by blasting when driving narrow working places or by air picks when cutting from a face. In the early years hand loading onto cars or conveyors predominated. A continuous miner was introduced into Canmore in 1959 on a trial basis, and another was subsequently acquired, in order to minimize blasting and hand loading, but problems in operating these machines in inclining seams and difficulties in providing safe roof support for the machines and workers restricted their efficient use. Another major difficulty with the use of continuous miners was the problem of ventilating development headings in the very gassy conditions. In the early 1970s they were replaced by electric and compressed air slushers and scrapers, resulting in a general increase in productivity, roof control, safety, and flexibility of operations(1.6,7,8.9)."

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories. Tonnage Requirements, Ore and Waste Loading, transporting, and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Generally, the greater the tonnage requirements, the larger the equipment size selected. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tons (total) per month, medium size for three mil- lion tons, and small size for one million tons or less.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. Rosario Dominicana, S.A., operates a gold processing complex at Pueblo Viejo, northwest of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The plant processes approximately 10,000 mtpd of oxide gold-bearing ore with a work index of 11 kWh/mt. The ore hardness has increased to about 17 kWh/mt. Metallurgical auditing of the plant was conducted? to find ways to modify the circuit to process hard ore without sacrificing throughput. In addition, unit operations were optimized to increase recovery and reduce operating cost,. The results of modifications made in the plant are discussed in this paper.

Introduction Today, more than 50% of rail-carried commodities are mineral industry related, with coal being the most important single commodity moved by rail. In 1980, coal accounted for more than 5.7 million of the total 22.6 million carloads moved by rail. Metallic ores were third behind grain, with more than 1.4 million carloads. Crushed stone, gravel, sand, and other non-metallic minerals totaled almost 2.3 million carloads. Chemicals and allied products, including fertilizer and coke, added another 1.7 million cars, with petroleum and petroleum products totaling 300,000 carloads. Coal Several things happened in the 1970s that gave rise to increased consumption of coal-particularly western coal-and to its dominant position among rail-carried commodities. First, the Clean Air Act of 1970 required generating plants to make significant reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions. To comply, utilities could either invest in scrubbers or switch to low-sulfur western coal. Many opted for the latter. By 1972, increasing demands by the utility companies halted what had been a 25-year decline in national coal consumption. Second, the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put an end to cheap oil and gas, limiting their future as fuels for electric generating purposes and increasing the potential for coal. Third, in 1977, President Carter announced an energy program with coal as its cornerstone, calling for an annual two-thirds increase in national coal production by 1985. He also called for conversion to coal by utilities and large industrial users. Finally, he proposed a 10-year, $10 billion program to encourage domestic coal production and stimulate development of export markets. Coal bounded into world prominence. Foreign demand for steam and metallurgical coal increased tremendously, while US demand for western coal also shot up. This meant greater demands on the transportation sectors that traditionally carried coal to market. Many railroads began programs to serve the coal industry. One example is Burlington Northern's commitment to handle increased western coal tonnages. The company spent more than $1 billion in recent years to develop a system capable of moving more than 91 Mt (100 million st) of coal each year. Other leaders in this renewal were Norfolk and Western, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific railways. The importance of the rapid growth of coal traffic to the railroads is shown in the accompanying table, which gives percentages of total tonnages hauled and revenues attributed to coal. With coal providing the railroad industry with a substantial share of its revenues, there is keen competition among the rail companies themselves and among railroads and other transportation sectors for coal haulage. But there is also cooperation when more than one railroad is involved in delivering the coal from mine to market or when a combination of transportation modes is more economical. The latter is represented by Conrail's interest in working with the port authorities of New York and New Jersey to establish a new coal port that would serve not only export markets, but also utilities and industries in the northeast. Iron Ore Next to coal, iron ore (taconite) is the most important single mineral commodity handled by railroads. In Minnesota, where most iron ore is produced, rail transportation is primarily by Burlington Northern and the Duluth, Missabe, & Iron Range Railway Co. (DM&IR). The DM&IR, owned by US Steel, serves several producers on the Mesabi Iron Range. Two of the larger producers, Erie Mining Co. and Reserve Mining Co., also own railroads that operate between the mines and the ports of Silver Bay and Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior. Several iron mines and taconite plants in Michigan are served by the Chicago and Northwestern, and the Soo Line. Total 1981 shipments of taconite and iron ore are estimated at 55.9 Mt (55 million It), compared with about 61 Mt (60 million It) in 1979 the most ever shipped in one year. The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

The production of natural abrasives varied in quantity and value compared with 1976. Output of tripoli-type materials was approximately the same in both quantity and value. Special silica stone products decreased in quantity and increased in value. Garnet production decreased both in quantity and value. The production of emery increased and the production and value of manufactured abrasive material was approximately the same. Foreign Trade Imports of abrasive materials were 23% more in value than in 1976, and exports plus reexports increased in value 10%. Net imports, the excess of imports over exports and reexports, were $35.3 million. The volume and value of all abrasive materials exported varied.

"Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The results of a three month evaluation of the application of EMEW® technology at the KGHM Glogów II Smelter tank house bleed stream are presented. The current, conven¬tional electrolyte decopperization process has some limitations, including: only a fraction of its production is commercial grade cathode copper, significant operating costs, low current efficiency, low current densities resulting in low copper depletion rate, and arsine gas and sulphuric acid emission. The EMEW® cell technology developed by Electrometals Technologies Ltd. can overcome many of these limitations. Tests were performed on a pilot EMEW® installation comprising 30 cells at ambient temperature on electrolyte bleed, using current densities between 100 and 600 A/m2 , with copper concentrations between 45 and <1g/dm3. Results showed that a high grade copper can be obtained to the level of 7 g/dm3 of copper concentration in electrolyte. The use of EMEW® technology allows the direct and efficient recovery of over 85% of the copper contained in the bleed electrolyte. Glue & thiourea addition were tested in order to improve the parameters of the copper depletion process. The behavior of Arsenic and Bismuth was observed and a means for their elimination from the system proposed. On-line copper concentration monitoring is proposed to improve control and performance.

Electrochemical polarization experiments were conducted on alloy 625 in ammonia solution between 25 and 225°C and the results were compared with those of an oxygen solubility model. Results confirm that corrosion is under oxygen control, Normalized corrosion rates are determined based on the rate of oxygen diffusion to the corroding surface, and the corrosion rate at 200°C (-9.7 µA.cm-2) is roughly 24 times higher than the corrosion rate at 25°C (0.4 nA,cm-2), An oxygen-solubility model for Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) conditions was generated using the Redlich¬Kwong-Soave (RKS) equation of state, Results of the model confirm many of the experimental observations from SCWO reactors which suggest that corrosion is at a maximum at temperatures just short of the critical point, The RKS/oxygen diffusion model predicts that the corrosion rate at 365° C is ?85 times higher than the corrosion rate at 25&apos; C. Given that a normalized corrosion rate is obtained, this type of model could be useful for selection of SCWO reactor materials.

Helium was in abundant supply after August, and the informal allocation system which had been in use intermittently since 1955 was discontinued Delivery of 26 new tank cars in August and September increased the total in the tank-car pool to 163. Defense and space agencies and the Atomic Energy Commission continued to use more helium in their operations and research.
