Acid rock drainage (ARD) is a recognized environmental challenge facing mining industries. An ambient temperature ferrite (ATF) process has been investigated for treating ARD. Most nonferrous metal and calcium ions present in typical ARDs were found to be detrimental to the ATF process. Three approaches were examined, including C02 aeration, addition of complex agents and use of magnetic seeds. By introducing magnetic seeds in the ATF process, the interferences were minimized and all the precipitates formed with lime neutralization were magnetically recovered from a simulated ARD. The residual concentrations of major metal ions in the treated water were environmentally acceptable. The XRD pattern confirmed the spinel ferrite crystal structure of the products

Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, NM, area. The first four shafts sunk at International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (IMC) property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 shaft there has been extensive erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation, leading to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows. It was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be modified to reflect any new or additional information obtained during the progress of the grouting.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

Mining of Molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the orebody. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

Dragline stripping operations account for over one-half of the U.S. bituminous coal production mined by surface coal mining methods. The dragline is a popular stripping tool because of its flexibility in varying overburden depths and relatively low operating costs per cubic yard of overburden. Because of the relatively high capital costs of the machines and their use as a primary stripping tool, the selection process is an important step in the mine planning procedure.

The effect of a surfactant, designated Syntex, on the wetting and spreading of hydrocarbon oil on molybdenite surfaces (faces) has been investigated experimentally through measurements of zeta potentials and factorially designed flotation tests. These studies indicate that Syntex has a positive effect in increasing molybdenite recovery in the rougher flotation circuit at the Climax mill. The analysis of experimental data using DLVO theory shows that the controlling factor in determining the magnitude of the repulsive energy barrier preventing oil from wetting and spreading on the molybdenite faces is the MoS2 zeta potential and the vapor oil droplet size. The role of Syntex in this case seems to be related to the decrease and stabilization of MoS2 zeta potential by Syntex adsorption and also to the emulsifying action of Syntex on vapor oil to provide a more favorable oil particle size.

Estimations have been made of the tonnage of raw ores and coal treated by various beneficiation processes. The amount treated by gravity concentration is substantially greater than that treated by flotation, with coal representing the bulk of the material treated by gravity means. A discussion is given of the trends and anticipated improvements in gravity methods. Except for the concentration of iron ores, magnetic and elec- trostatic separation processes find their greatest use in the beneficiation of non-sulfide ores. Exciting new developments in magnetic materials and separation process (and, to a lesser extent, in the electrostatic process) indicate a substantial increase in the application of such processes to ores and a broad variety of non-ore uses.

In taking this approach we must, of course, by-pass the fact that plants In this Country and aborad have been automated to a greater or lesser extent. On July 20, 1990, a Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan was approved by MSHA for Jim Walter Resources, Inc. No. 5 Mine. The mine operated under the plan for twenty-nine shifts before MSHA revoked the plan. A total of fifty-five seals were constructed during the process of implementing the plan. The major difficulty in applying the control concept resulted from problems controlling leakage at the numerous seals. The number of seals was a direct consequence of attempting to merge the traditional bleeder system, used in all the Blue Creek Mines, with the bleederless system Jim Walter Resources proposed as a means of controlling the spontaneous combustion hazard. This paper discusses Jim Walter Resources experience with spontaneous combustion control and the new safety standard which applies to underground coal mines that demonstrate a history of spontaneous combustion and how this standard would apply to our No. 5 Mine. The new Ventilation Standards were published in the Federal Register on May 15, 1992, and scheduled to go into effect August 16, 1992.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. The exposure of miners to radon gas and its airborne daughter products is a serious health problem which has long been recognized in the uranium mining industry. The association of high exposure to alpha particle emitters with incidence of lung cancer is well established. There continues to be a pressing need to reduce and eventually eliminate the high incidence of occupational lung cancer among uranium miners through the development of new and improved measurement and control technologies. This paper highlights the current efforts of the Bureau of Mines radiation hazards research program. It is aimed at obtaining a fundamental understanding of the behavior and transport of radon and radon daughters, developing more accurate and reliable instruments and measurement methods and developing cost-effective control techniques. Also discussed are the most recent accomplishments and the future research plans of the program.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect drill bit wear and use that equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel software package. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Surfaces of metal sulfides react readily with selected constituents of environment. Two types of reaction products may form: (1) primary, chemisorbed and hydrophobic surface products or primary hydrophilic surface products, and (2) secondary reaction products -- produced during continued oxidation-reduction processes. For flotation, the chemisorbed surface product and the secondary reaction products, elemental sulfur or metal xanthates, must provide sufficient hydrophobicity of the surface to ensure particle-bubble attachment.

The Department of Energy is presently sponsoring the development of automated miner-bolter machines in an effort to increase production and productivity in the continuous room-and-pillar mining sections. This study is concerned with the production potential of these machines in three different mine layouts. The Underground Material Handling Simulation (UGMHS) computer model was utilized in the study. The effect of variables such as bolt installation delay, shuttle car capacity, and equipment availability on production are analyzed.

A general form of pore pressure in a saturated porous medium, which is subject to external forces it has the pressurization of a borehole in hydraulic fracturing, is derived. The pore pressure consists of two parts: the preexisting initial pore pressure and the pressure induced by fluid flow due to the pressure difference caused by pressurizing the borehole The initial pore pressure associates with the effective stresses in the stress, fields of crustal stresses and a thick hollow cylinder subjected to internal and external pressures. The pure pressure weaned by fluid flow is implied in Biot's (1941) constitutive equation for three-dimensional consolidation and proved to be the exact effective pore pressure (Nur and Byerlee, 1971). Using this general form of pore pressure, a general poroelastic model for hydraulic-fracturing breakdown (fracture-initiation) pressure was derived. This model was validated by laboratory experimental results on Indiana limestone. Three sets of tests were conducted under the conditions of preexisting pore pressures of 6, 21 and 28 MPa, respectively. The equal horizontal (confining) pressures applied in the tests ranged from 6 to 60 MPa. Hainison and Fairhurst's (1967) model appear to be applicable to rocks having microcracks or flows. Experimental results of fracture reopening pressures on Indiana limestone supported this assertion. The test results also demonstrated that, when the pressure difference between the confining and the initial pore pressure grows larger than 14 to 21 MPa, the breakdown pressures agree well with the general poroelastic model developed in this paper. This indicates that the developed model will be superior when hydrofacturing stress measurements are conducted at great depth.

Rock suitable for crushed-stone aggregate is almost entirely restricted to the Highlands region of Arkansas, mostly from Paleozoic sedimentary units, but also from a few Cretaceous igneous plutons. Reserves in the state are sufficient for local needs, and Arkansas is geographically well situated for export markets to the south, where resources for crushed-stone aggregate are lacking. A study of 423 quarries, test pits, and exploration sites in Arkansas has been completed to evaluate the relative quality of bedrock units for producing crushed aggregate. Of these, 274 sites have records of engineering tests for stone evaluation done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Of the 1,775 sample records from these sites, the most commonly reported parameters are the LA abrasion test and the Na-sulfate soundness test. Many records also have absorption and specific-gravity data, and, for some, petrographic information helps identify the potential for alkali-silica reactivity in portland-cement concrete. By determining the bedrock sources of the tested samples, comparison is made between the various geologic mapping units as to their relative quality for crushed stone.

Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.
