The CERAMEC pressure filter is used for the filtration of fine materials whose cake moisture cannot be achieved with vacuum. Development work has been carried out to achieve a well-controlled cake forming and cleaning of the filter media as well as an efficient solids discharge system. Operating costs are low due to low energy input and negligible consumption of pressurized air.

Western Oklahoma, with an estimated 48 billion tons of minable gypsum, has one of the largest reserves of high-purity stone in the United States (Figure 1). Gypsum beds of the Permian Blaine Forma¬tion are 10 to 30 feet thick in the southwest and northwest regions, and the Permian Cloud Chief Gypsum is 20 to 90 feet thick in the west-central region (Ham, 1962; Ham and Curtis, 1958; Scott and Ham, 1957). Republic Gypsum Company, in the southwest part of the State, is Oklahoma's second-largest gypsum producer. Since opening its plant in 1964, the company has steadily increased production and now accounts for about 15 percent of the State's annual output. The plant and quarry are 15 miles west of Altus at Duke, a small commu¬nity on the Hollis and Eastern Railroad in northwestern Jackson County.

Gravity concentration has been the main method for tin ore beneficiation, based on the significant difference of density between cassiterite and gangue in the tin ore. However, with the exhaustion of rich and coarse reserves, the proportion of tin distribution in slime be-comes as high as 50 to 70% and has a size range of -19 urn. In some sulfide tin ore, most of the tin is of the minus 10-urn size fraction, and thus slime processing has gained importance in tin ore processing. Some innovations are being developed, such as the centrifugal cone separator, belt concentrator, slime table, B-M separator, and slime flotation. Direct flotation with tolyl arsonic acid has been practiced with success.

"Rotary percussion" implies two types of energy, rotary and percussion. Into these categories fall rock' drills of varying sizes. The larger ones drill above 6" diameter holes; the medium size, 2 3/4" to 4 1/2" holes; and the smallest, 1 1/4" to 2" holes. Essentially, the larger holes are drilled with doom-the-hole drills using tri-cone bits. Percussion energy evolves from the drill piston and rotation power from the rotary table or overhead drive, using drill collars or pull down mechanism to preload the bit.

Finely-ground hematitic ore, too high in silica (quartz) to be commercially viable, was treated by emulsion flotation. A three-component emulsion mixture was used at temperatures ranging from ambient (22° C) to 30° C, 40° C, 49 °C, 59° C and 68° C. The optimal emulsion dosage and composition at ambient temperature were used to determine that dosage for higher-temperature flotation tests. The crushed ore (100%, -8 mesh) was repeatedly washed with tap water, and the filtrate's ionic content was analyzed. The separation efficiency values (a measure of the selective separation and concentration of hematite from gangue minerals) demonstrated temperature dependence, with marked increases at temperatures above ambient. The optimal separation efficiency occurred within the range from 30° C to 60° C. The improved separation efficiencies at temperatures exceeding ambient are explained by quartz depression. This depression is attributed to: • the precipitation of quartz-activating cations, principally calcium and magnesium, at increasing temperature; and • temperature's effect on the collector's solubility and attachment to the aqueous hematite surface.

In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT) is part of Sound Transit’s $3.7 billion, 14-mile light rail transit system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington, to the cities of Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Redmond. The tunnel was the first Sound Transit East Link project and posed significant construction risk. This paper discusses implementation of design changes to the soft ground tunneling method, implementation of several technologies such as the use macro-synthetic fiber initial shotcrete lining, use of spray-applied waterproofing, and use of shotcrete for the final tunnel lining. These efforts allowed for significant time and cost savings to the project.

The design of an ore-processing plant requires a high degree of cooperation among the geological, mining and metallurgical engineers. The purposes of this section are to provide mill design information most commonly needed by the mine planners and management, and to summarize the kinds of information that must be supplied to the mill designer to enable him to provide a suitable plant. 28.1-BASIS OF DESIGN NORMAN WEISS 28.1.1-SIZE OF PROJECT The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect, a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd without major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding and processing. Hours per shift also are an important factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the percentage lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into account. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure. but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as 10 yr, or as a specific daily capacity over the first 2 yr, next 4 yr, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 mi southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent.' where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. 28.1.2-EXPECTED LIFE The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis which, in turn, is based on many factors.' From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-yr project may be wasteful for a 5-yr operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grinding-the former may be found more economical for a 5-yr operation, and the other, more costly, method more economical for a 15 to 20-vi- life.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

The importance of a power economy that is efficient both in technological and economic terms has been clearly recognized in recent years. In 1977 the German Federal Government therefore introduced its Energy Research and Energy Technologies Program 1977-1980, which consolidates the government activities in the field of nuclear and non-nuclear energy research. The priority objectives of this program can be summarized as follows: safeguarding the medium- to long-term energy supply in the Federal Republic of Germany at reasonable overall macroeconomic cost, taking into account the requirements of environmental protection and the safety of the population. In the field of coal mining technologies, about 200 research projects are currently under way. A total of DM 1.7 billion is earmarked for research to be conducted in this area between 1977 and 1980.

Electrothermal production of elemental phosphorous (P4) generates substantial amounts of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorous contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations. To date, the sludges are stored in ponds or above ground in special containment vessels at various locations around the country. Two samples of electric furnace phosphorous sludge (obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, AL and FMC Corporation in Pocatello, ID) were investigated using physical separation techniques to recover the elemental phosphorous and to render the residual material nonhazardous. The techniques tested include sizing, froth flotation and dispersed air oxidation. Flotation and sizing produced concentrates containing 69% - 90%P4, with recovery in the range of 60% - 87%. Dispersed air oxidation of the fines and tailings products was effective in the removal of an additional 10% - 15% of the P4 in the sludge.

For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in terms of decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year and includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2,348 meters (7,700 feet), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) of development drifting and stope preparation, was initially concieved in the Fall of 1979. This duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is a testimonial to what can be accomplished when a progressive mining company and an innovative contractor work together as a team rather than developing into two warring camps as often happens.

"Ongoing research is being conducted to evaluate secondary support performance in longwall ventilation entries. In a three-entry longwall gateroad, secondary supports are applied in the #2 entry to maintain a functional airway for the entirety of second panel mining. This airway represents a pathway for contaminated mine air to travel from the longwall tailgate to the mine bleeder system. The ground response curve concept may be used as a design basis for selection of appropriate secondary support in these ventilation entries. Two types of secondary supports are monitored for load and convergence in this project. These monitored supports are pumpable crib supports and interlocking wood crib supports. To evaluate the effect of support density, two installation patterns are monitored for each support type. Both a single-row, protected airway pattern and double-row, full entry support pattern are monitored for each support type. Load and displacement data is collected for all support patterns as second panel mining retreats past instrumentation sites. Data is collected for approximately 200-feet inby the second panel face or as long as safely possible. Load and convergence data collected will be used to calibrate numerical models that will simulate ground response curves for the #2 entry inby the second panel face.INTRODUCTIONWhen a bleeder ventilation system is used, the #2 entry of a three-entry longwall gateroad system is designed to function as a pathway for contaminated air from a longwall face to the bleeder system during second panel mining. The #2 entry is subject to substantial ground movement and loading during its function as an air course because it is a single entry between two longwall gobs. Secondary support is regularly applied in this entry to maintain air course functionality during second panel mining.Research on performance and design of secondary supports has been conducted extensively over the last 30 years (Barczak and Gearhart, 1993; Barczak and Gearhart, 1994; Mucho, Barczak, and Dolinar, 1999). This research has focused heavily on the application of secondary support in longwall tailgate, with little research on the application of secondary support in bleeders or other ventilation entries (Mirabile and Westman, 2018). Secondary supports in #2 entry are likely to experience similar loading and ground movement as those applied in the tailgate entry. However, the designed lifespan of the mine entry and the definition of acceptable ground conditions differs from mine entries where more extensive research has been conducted."

There is no doubt, if any existed, that the commercial minerals world has now moved into a new era of unprecedented challenges in the sourcing, mining, processing, trade and use of industrial minerals. Industrial (nonmetallic) minerals remain the often unsung workhorse of mineral commodities and specialist raw materials that frankly keep the world’s manufacturing industries ticking over, and everyday products we use in sound availability. They are also very much present among the so-called “critical minerals” necessary to advance cutting-edge developments in growing high-tech markets such as in energy transition: for example, lithium, rare earths, graphite and fluorspar. Indeed, in the United States during 2024, industrial minerals again accounted for the majority share of total sourcing, and, yes, geopolitics. The last few years have witnessed a series of geopolitical issues that have impacted and continue to impact international trade in industrial minerals. Above all, it has been the threat and implementation of recent trade tariffs between countries that have been most damaging in creating a potential trade war. mine production by value at $72.1 billion, or 54 percent, followed by metals, 25 percent, and coal, 21 percent, according to the latest data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). According to accident statistics (l, 2), roof fall accidents occur quite frequently at the intersections of underground? openings and account for up to 30% of the roof fall fatalities. But this figure will certainly go up considerably if roof falls not associated with any fatal accident are included in the analysis. Unfortunately, nonfatal roof falls are seldom documented. In the underground coal mines, there are two types of entry intersections. One is the three-way (V type) and the other is the four-way (T type) intersections. A three-way intersection occurs whenever the mainline track haulageway turns at an angle into a section haulageway. The four-way intersections by far the most common type in the U.S. under-ground coal mines are formed by the intersections of two entries which are oriented perpendicular to each other or by the intersections of entries and crosscuts. However, crosscuts are frequently driven at an angle to the entry to facilitate machine movements. The four-way intersections formed by this method of crosscut development are angled. At the intersection of two underground openings, the diagonal roof span is wider than the width of each individual opening. This is one of the major reasons why roof falls occur more likely at the intersections than in the entry between pillars. Consequently, special intersection support plans are usually employed (Figs. 1 and 2) for intersections. The most popular practices are to decrease roof bolt spacing 1 ft. less than or to increase roof bolt length 1 to 2 ft. longer than those employed in the entry between pillars (3). The increase in bolt length or decrease in bolt spacing can be applied to all of the bolts in the intersection or employed only for the strategically located bolts depending on the individual mine practices. These rather generalized practices seems to be adequate for some areas but in many cases inadequate for others. Occasionally, the neighboring two lines of chain pillars are staggered such that the crosscuts in one row of chain pillars face the centers of the chain pillars in the neigh-boring rows. This layout forms T-type three-way intersections which are also inadequate for most weak roofs (3, 4). A study was therefore initiated to develop special techniques for intersection supports. The first phase of the study was the analysis of the stress fields for the underground entry intersections. A three-dimensional stress analysis was necessary for this purpose. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional problems of complicated boundary conditions are beyond the existing analytical methods. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was therefore employed in this study. In the analysis, square pillars of 40 feet wide and an entry height of 8 feet were assumed while entry widths varied at 14, 20 and 26 feet. This model was selected to simulate the mine where roof falls data were collected. The second phase of the study was the collection of field data. The sizes of the roof falls including heights, lengths and widths were collected and analyzed. In the third phase study, the results of the first and second phases were compared and discussed. The analysis of field data revealed an arching zone within which roof falls occurred. The arching zone above an entry obtained empirically was compared with the calculated stress contours. Assuming that the bolts must be anchored in the rock strata outside the arching zone, the preferable systems of bolting were proposed. Also the amount of pretension required to inhibit sliding between layers was discussed.

A critical component of implementing autonomous systems is the ability to use information from a robust sensory and information system to make sound, predictable, and repeatable decisions to assure safety. This means that any such system would need to evaluate what objects (people, equipment, boulders, etc.) of interest exist in that environment (with relevant data about identity, trajectory, characteristics, etc.), project a future continuum of those objects (including considerations for variabilities), and make control intervention choices to minimize risk due to exposures in the present operational area. The components of an overall system would include: a) sensor and data fusion, b) probability projection of future states, c) generation and evaluation of alternate futures, and d) implementation of best course of action to reduce risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is studying this framework for applications for autonomous mining equipment. This paper focuses on using information from the sensor fusion engine to generate a continuous projection of future and alternate states (b and c above) incorporating the factors of confidence, accuracy, tolerance, and other variabilities. We refer to this as Machine Situational Awareness (MSA).

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.

With a growing number of mines reaching closure and seeing closure costs materialize, regulators, lenders, and banks are observing projects that fail economically by miscalculating these costs. Mine closure costs are often categorized as a type of liability which is defined as the money owed by the company to offset effects from the project, and the money available to pay for those debts (e.g., bond). Often, decisions made before Day 1 of mining (e.g., co-disposal, dry stack tailings, waste segregation) can significantly change the bond calculation. Once the bond is calculated and funded, operators are encouraged to conduct closure research and use applied science for progressive bond release prior to final closure. However, this author has observed few instances of financially significant progressive bond release, as there are typically no robust procedures for bond return, either before or during closure activities. As a result, many companies decide that entering a state of Care & Maintenance (C&M) is less risky than attempting to fund closure activities with an unknown bond return mechanism. Although perhaps less risky in the short-term, the primary long-term risk with entering C&M is that it increases the chances of the bond not covering the cost of closure and the chances of the government/regulatory agency inheriting the mine closure. Bonds are typically reevaluated on a regular cycle (e.g., five years) so every mining company goes through this financing challenge eventually.
