"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with mediumsized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in the present study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. IntroductionSurface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1 percent of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples).• 5.8 percent of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (nine out of 155 samples).• 7.3 percent of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 41 samples).• 7.5 percent of blasters/shotfirers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 40 samples)."

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

This article discusses the evolution of U.S. laws and policies towards environmental remediation at mine lands over the last 20years, the opportunities that these changes present for reuse, and the remaining challenges associated with community capacity for effective reuse planning and implementation. Emerging initiatives by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Interior for addressing these challenges are discussed.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) undertook an exploratory feasibility study to one of the most ambitious tunneling projects in the United States. HNTB Corporation was retained to perform the study, deemed the Atlanta North-South Tunnel, which is approximately 7 miles long and consisting of four lanes (or six lanes) starting at the southern terminus of SR 400 extending to the south connecting with the northern terminus of I-675, providing substantial relief to the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85), the most congested portion of Atlanta?s freeway system. This paper summarizes the analysis performed during the first phase of this challenging assignment which, if constructed, would be one of the longest roadway tunnels ever built in the United States.

The Meikle Mine is a high grade, underground goldmine utilizing primary-secondary longhole open stoping with delayed backfill to produce 2700 tpd(3000 stpd) of ore. Hot and reactive ground conditions were encountered early on in the mine life. Ground temperatures up to 166°C (330°F) were measured. In the early stages of mining, the mine experienced premature detonations using different explosive products. The learning curve to safely mine this high-grade gold deposit in hot and severely reactive ground was indeed very steep. Currently, the Meikle Mine uses a special buffered bulk emulsion in all blasts to address hot and reactive ground concerns. In addition, exacting procedures are also followed to ensure safe work with explosives. The combination of new explosives technology and strict loading procedures permits high mine productivity with the highest degree of safety.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. As mining operations progress toward tele-mining and autonomous procedures, the need for machine performance monitoring increases. Presently, through a combination of vision, sound, and other subjective observations, an operator attempts to optimize the mechanical excavator’s operation. As the operator is moved away from the face in the case of tele-mining or completely removed for autonomous operation, the qualitative sensory input is lost. This lost information must be replaced with quantifiable sensory input. Chip formation detection may be a suitable replacement sensory input. Chip formation can be predicted with high confidence (>80%) through the analysis of the load waveform associated with the bit/rock interface.

The present work explores the reutilization of red mud, an industrial waste arising from the production of alumina, as a component of isolation technologies for hazardous substances. The work involved the study and optimisation of the geotechnical properties of red mud in conjunction with adsorption experiments of As(V) and Hg(II). The results from both types of experiments were integrated in a dispersion-diffusion model to calculate migration curves and minimum thickness of the red mud compacted layer. The geotechnical studies showed that compaction increased the stability and decreased the hydraulic conductivity of red mud barrier. Red mud sorbed high amounts of As (up to 44 mmmol kg-1) and Hg (up to 9.2 mmmol kg-1). The calculated minimum thickness of the red mud barrier was 1-10 cm for As and 2-19 cm for Hg, for an operation period of 35 years. The results obtained let to conclude that the reuse of red mud as a component of isolation systems of hazardous substances represents a viable alternative use of this residue.

Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.

A process was developed to treat an ammoniacal leach liquor containing zinc using Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the extractant. The objective of this work was to develop a process package for the treatment of complex sulfide leach liquors. Zinc extraction could not be carried out directly from the ammoniacal solution in mixer-settler units because of crud formation and low extraction efficiency. After neutralizing the free ammonia with H2SO4, the extraction efficiency was only about 40%, due to the high concentration of (NH4)2SO4. To decrease the (NH4)2SO4 concentration, the free NH3 was steam stripped, and the resultant liquor was subjected to zinc solvent extraction. An extraction efficiency of 98% could be achieved by controlling the equilibrium pH. Stripping studies were also optimized after removing ammonia from the zinc-loaded organic. A continuous 100-hr operation that included extraction, scrubbing and stripping, was carried out successfully.

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

The last time Mining Engineering presented an issue with a special focus on Canadian Mining (ME, August 2008 pp. 28 to 40) things were going well. A feature story took a look at Xstrata?s Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury and the booming Canadian oil sands were discussed at length. Potash prices were soaring, large diamonds were being found and British Columbia was launching plans to find more workers. How things have changed in six short months. What began as a mortgage crisis grew into a credit crisis, then mutated into a financial crisis, that has taken its toll on the value of bonds, loans, stocks, real estate and commodities. Miners that were flying high on unprecedented commodity prices six months ago have begun scaling back with delays, shut downs and layoffs as they struggle to survive this most recent economic downturn.

Considerable amounts of the world's known reserves of elemental sulfur are found near the surface in areas of volcanic activity both active and inactive. Because such deposits cannot in general-be mined by the well-known Frasch process, and because other methods of recovery have not proven to be economically competitive except in isolated instances, at present these reserves remain relatively undeveloped. However, projections of world sulfur demand indicate that new sources of marketable sulfur will be needed in future years 2/, 19/. For this reason, recovery of elemental sulfur from these near-surface deposits is of continuing interest. Solvent extraction as an approach to recovery of elemental sulfur from open pit-mined ores of these non-Frasch deposits has received considerable attention particularly at the research and development level 3 /, 7/, l l /, 16/, 21/,23/, 29/ This method has been and continues to be attractive because it presents the potential of high sulfur recovery and purity of product coupled with a relatively simple process flowsheet in which low energy requirements and reasonable operating costs are thought to be possible. However, the physical and chemical characteristics of the native-sulfur ores, of elemental sulfur, and of the known solvents, have presented difficulties in the development of solvent extraction processes. Up to the present time, viable processes have not been realized within the framework of sulfur marketing conditions.

The subject of surface mine development is large. This section covers the fundamental concepts involved in both the open pit mining of thick or steeply dipping deposits as well as the strip mining of thin, shallow, and relatively flat-lying seams or beds. Design involves the marrying of geometries, ore and waste characteristics, equipment, and economics so that the desired result is achieved. Generally, there are many possible combinations from which to choose. For example, extraction over a short time period requires one strategy while quite another is applied for longer times. Variations in supply and demand require some flexibility of operation. Customer requirements impose certain constraints regarding the set of possible designs. Over recent years, planning and operating considerations for surface mining imposed by environmental requirements have increased markedly. There have, at the same time, been enormous advances made in the design aids available to the mine planner. Computer simulation of the various options, whether it be for mine design or equipment selection, provides detailed information for decision making in real time. A significant challenge to the engineer/planner is how to best use the aids avail-able. Because of the widespread use of commercially available and in-house computer software by industry, this section does not deal with the details of planning (for basic coverage of mine development, see Section 7). Rather, some of the basic concepts are stressed. The principles involved in equipment sizing and selection are discussed. A highly important but sometimes over-looked aspect of planning, haul road design, is also covered. For surface mining operations of the future, in-pit crushing and conveying will become even more important. Some of the considerations for application evaluation are included. The section concludes with some future concepts for surface mining.

ISO 9000 is a system of quality standards that originated in Europe in the 1980s and has since been widely adopted by manufacturing companies throughout the world. The ISO 9000 standards have received less attention in the minerals industry. But, in part as a result of customer pressure, a trend is beginning to emerge for minerals producers to seek ISO certification. This is especially true among producers of industrial minerals. In early October 1994, SME's Industrial Minerals Division held a conference "ISO 9000 - uniting industrial mineral producers and consumers into quality partnerships," in Nashville, TN to bring people from the industry together to talk about their experiences with ISO 9000. William J. Miles, of Bentonite Corp. Inc., and A. Frank Alsobrook, of Alsobrook and Co., were cochairmen of the meeting. In his introductory remarks, Miles noted, "ISO 9000 is more than a quality program. It is a quality philosophy. Appropriately imple-mented, it is a contract between the supplier and the customer. It leads to continuous quality improvement and reduced manufacturing costs."

What decision making tools and methods are available to a project owner when there is no clear differentiator between construction alternatives? A team led by a joint venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff and PGH Wong Engineering (PB/Wong) has been providing preliminary engineering services to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The SFMTA and PB/Wong team developed several alternative construction methods for the tunnels and stations of the San Francisco Central Subway Project, none of which could be judged clearly better than another using traditional approaches and metrics. The team employed a risk assessment and analysis frame-works as a means of comparative analysis, drawing upon the knowledge of industry experts in the geotechnical, tunneling and construction fields to assist in the effort. This paper presents the approach and results of a cost and schedule risk analysis for two such analyses designed to answer two different questions regarding the advisability of different construction approaches. These assessments paved the way for key decision making in the preliminary engineering phase of the project and formed the foundation for continuing risk management efforts on the project. The focus of this paper is primarily the first two stages of risk management?identification and assessment?and some of the organizational dynamic issues that arise in such efforts.

INTRODUCTION Virtually every sector of society in our country feels the impact of tunnels, either through the transportation of water, commodities, or people. The economic implications are staggering. The Committee on Rapid Excavation (1) reported that during the near future, 1968-1975, underground excavation activity will comprise 946 miles of tunnels (subways: 85 miles; underground urban highways: 123 miles; intercity highway tunnels: 210 miles; water supply tunnels: 528 miles) and 5,119 million tons of crude ore; metals: 874 million tons; nonmetals: 899 million tons; and coal: 3,346 million tons. It is estimated that the cumulative demand for underground excavation in the decade 1970-1979 will be 13 billion dollars for construction-oriented demand and 16 billion dollars for mining-oriented demand. The respective figures for the decade 1980-1989 are estimated at 22 billion dollars and 18 billion dollars. Of the many advantages claimed for tunnels (2, 3, 4, 5) the environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important. Transportation tunnels particularly for rapid transit systems, offer reductions in noise pollution and air pollution while improving aesthetics and optimizing land use (fewer problems of right-of-way and disruption of utilities). Considerable interest has been shown recently in sub-surface construction and mining (6, 7, 8). Recognizing the future demands for tunnels has led to considerable study of methods to improve rates of tunnel advance per day, safety, and the overall economics.
