Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to extract potassium from glauconitic sandstone, and the effects of important variables were studied. The reduced time plot (RTP) for all of the variables obtained from the experimental data has been quantified by this simple equation: R = 100 (1 - exp (-0.693 *(T/T50)0.605) The time required for 50% extraction (T50) has been correlated by a regression equation to variables such as acid strength, temperature, fluorite: glauconite ratio and % solids. Both of these equations were used to predict the extraction percentage at different process-variable levels. In addition, several other experiments were conducted at arbitrary levels of the variables to verify the equations developed.

The mine, recognized as arguably one of the richest rare earths deposits in the world, is at the center of Molycorps? strategic ?Mine to Magnets? plan. It aims to secure America?s future supply of rare-earth-dependent technologies by developing a strong domestic rare earth industry. Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

INTRODUCTION LKAB was formed at the turn of the century when the railways between the ore fields and harbors were built. The mines are situated north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest mine, with a pro¬duction capacity of approximately 30 Mt/a. Malm¬berget has a capacity of about 12 Mt/ a. Both are under¬ground mines. Svappavaara, the only opencast mine currently in operation, has a capacity of about 4.5 Mt/a. The ore harbors are at Narvik for the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines and at Lulea for the Malmberget mine (see Fig. 1). Production in the form of finished products is shown in Fig. 2a, b, c, and d. Due to poor ore markets in re¬cent years, production and shipments have been cut back, but there was a positive swing in 1978. LKAB has been 96% state-owned since 1957. In addition to the iron mines in northern Sweden, LKAB has subsidiaries in central Sweden which produce sulfide ores, quartz sand, and uranium (Fig. 3). The mining methods employed are opencast bench stoping at Svappavaara and sublevel caving at Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. GEOLOGY The Kiirunavaara ore body is 4000 m long and av¬erages about 90 m wide, with variations in width from a few meters to around 150 m. The ore has been ex¬plored by deep drilling down to about 1000 m, but mag¬netic measurements indicate a depth of at least 1500 m. The Kiirunavaara ore is oriented in a north-northeasterly direction with a number of ores in the boundaries be¬tween the wall rock types. The ore in Kiirunavaara is mainly a fine-grained magnetite with a varying content of fine-grained apatite. The apatite content of the ore decreases with increasing depth. The other ores are all apatite-bearing and a couple are hematite ores (Fig. 4a, b). The ores are sedimentary, tilted, and tectonically de¬formed. They have a lateral dip of 0.87 to 1.2 rad (50 to 70°). The contacts between ore and wall rock are distinct and sharp, but both the hanging wall and the footwall are brecciated and impregnated with magnetite. The footwall of the Kiirunavaara ore consists of syenite porphyry with a low quartz content and rela¬tively good strength; the hanging wall consists of quartz porphyry. Both types are known as Kiruna porphyries. The ore at the boundary with the hanging wall is often rich in kaolin. There are a few veins of syenite porphyry running through the ore, which has a few major faults (Fig. 4c, d). There are two sharply delineated ore grades in Kiirunavaara: low phosphorus ore with less than 0.1 % phosphorus (about one-third of the ore) and high phos¬phorus ore with greater than 0.5% phosphorus. The iron content is 67% in the low phosphorus ore and 60% in the high phosphorus ore. These ore types are sold as different grades and so are kept separate during mining. "INTRODUCTION Ganntas Tunnel is part of the modernization project of the railway between Alger and Oran, in Algeria. In order to double and rectify the existing line between El Affroun and Khémis Miliana, the alignment foresees the excavation of a 7 km-long twin tunnel. The excavation works started in June 2011 with the contractor CCECC, under the supervision of SYSTRA. Excavation is driven in conventional method by hydraulic hammer simultaneously on 8 different faces since excavation was started also from a junction window towards the middle of the tunnel. The minimum longitudinal distance to be respected between two contiguous tunnel faces has been set to 30 m. The tunnel cross-section is a 70 m² oval shaped profile, temporary support consists of shotcrete, bolts and steel ribs. A 30 to 50 cm thick cast in situ concrete final lining has been provided as well. When the tunnel reached a fault zone in soft clayey marls extreme squeezing occurred, works were stopped and re-profiling operations were carried out along more than 100 m. To date, works proceed at slow rate since high convergences are still monitored and completion of works is not expected before December 2016.GEOLOGY The project is located within the Tellian Atlas mountain area, including in particular the Djebel Ganntas massif in between Mitidja and Chleff plains. Djebel Ganntas is characterized by an extensive massif aligned in East-West direction with smooth slopes made of soft clays that emerge in multiple cliffs and ravines. On the top of it, along the edge, a more recent sandstone formation is found. The existing data on the geology did not allow to establish an accurate geological model at tender stage. In-situ investigations allowed at design stage to identify a Quaternary alluvial cover of clays and gravel, followed by a Miocene stratum divided in a sandy top layer and a lower clayey layer. From a structural point of view, geological maps suggest a north direction dip of layers, but the in situ surveys showed that layers were highly folded. The lack of information at tender stage on the structure of the geological series should have triggered an extensive investigation campaign at detailed design stage which did not take place causing serious consequences on costs and time at construction stage."

Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

The Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30% of the US utility, coal market due to the region's low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content. In 1997, production exceeded 240 Mt (265 million st). This was an in¬crease of 104 Mt (115 million st) since 1989 and 4.5 Mt (5 million st) above 1996. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) approaches. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the Basin where coal quality is higher. Coal characteristics SPRB coal is classified as subbituminous due to its low heating value and high moisture content. The coal is characterized by low sulfur and ash contents, low ash fusion temperatures and high reactivities. In 1997, the average heating content was 8,593 Btu/lb, with an average sulfur and ash content of 0.79 lbs S02/million [ ] Btu and 5.13%, respectively. The distinguishing characteristic of SPRB coal is its low sulfur content. Most SPRB coal contains less than 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu. This is the approximate definition of "compliance" coal for Phase II of the CA AA. Much of the coal, particularly in the southern part of the Basin, is referred to as "super-compliance" coal due to SO2 contents of between 0.4 and 0.7 lbs SO2/million Btu. In the defunct Gorka quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha and containing approximately 1 million ton of high aluminium wastes and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water. The reservoir is fed with the filtrates arriving from the disposal site mentioned, at a rate ~130 m3/day. An alarming phenomenon is the subsidence of the pond bottom and the infiltration of solutions into the Triassic and Jurassic water resources, assessed at ~40 m3/ day. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Gorka pond is their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and variable pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides pumping out and treatment of about 500000m3 of effluents retained in the Gorka reservoir in an about yearly time. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant, according to a process so far verified on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product would be discharged into the Ropa stream. The brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl), whose amount may reach up to100000m3, might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. Similarly, there would be provided an intake of underflows of infiltrates (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches) arriving from the high aluminum site, and such effluents would be subject to ongoing dilution in water courses. It would be possible to test the system of underflows reaching the Gorka reservoir by means of geochemical identification, previously performed. The next stage following the pumping, would be the utilization of approx. 50 000m3 of bottom slurry. Highly alkaline slurries would be utilized in the production of self-solidifying mixtures. Slurries would be pumped out and temporarily dumped on drying beds, located nearby the Gorka reservoir, and later on used successively for making self-solidifying mixtures in a plant similar to a concrete making seat. Those mixtures would be applied for sealing the bottom of the Gorka reservoir and the necessary part of the edges of the defunct quarry. An alternative solution is the utilization of slurries in the facilities of the Trzebionka Mining Works and the application of self-solidifying mixtures, made in the Trzebionka Works, for sealing the reservoir bottom.

Adobe, dried mud bricks, have been used since before historic time in the construction of dwellings. Building materials are normally evaluated for thermal performance based on measurements known as R- and U-values. The R-value is an indicator of the ability of a wall to insulate effectively and the higher the R-value, the better it is as an insulating material. The U-value, or value of conductance, is the reciprocal of the R-value and reflects the rate at which heat is conducted through a material. But the "heat capacity of the wall" must also be considered. This measures the length of time that passes before a steady state of heat flow is achieved. The effective U-value measures both the resistance to the transfer of heat and the capacity to hold heat. These latter value make adobe a far more interesting as a modern building material that was formerly recognized.

A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of oxygen and lead nitrate on the recovery of gold by cyanidation of a free milling gold ore, which contains 0.4 % copper as chalcopyrite. Efficient gold extraction is achieved only under specific conditions. The recovery of gold was increased from less than 90% to up to 98% by addition of lead nitrate. In the pre-leaching, the kinetics of oxidation of soluble sulphides are not an accurate indication for the length of the treatment. Even though the consumption of cyanide was reduced due to the inhibition of the dissolution of chalcopyrite by increasing additions of lead nitrate, cyanide consumption had to the held above 1.85 kg/t to maintain good recovery of gold. The continued addition of lead nitrate above 300 git had no impact on the recovery of gold. It was also found that the addition of lead nitrate at the start of cyanidation gave the same performance as when added during pre-leaching. The addition of oxygen increased the recovery of gold by 1.5%. The concentration ofNaCN had to be maintained in the range of700 mg/L because of the high concentration of copper in solution. The recovery of gold dropped significantly when the average NaCN concentration fell below 640 mg/L. Application of the findings of the laboratory study at the industrial scale led to improved plant performance.

The inability to economically separate Fe3+(aq) from a variety of liquid effluents is a major Concern for the primary metals industry. A unique solvent extraction process, galvanic stripping, has been developed to address this problem. The galvanic stripping of iron from D2EHPA using only a 5~10 g/L H2SO4 solution is achieved after Fe3+ is directly reduced to Fee, in the organic phase using zinc metal additions. To date, the primary focus of the laboratory research has been on optimizing the parameters that control iron removal. The results from these studies have now been, used to make a preliminary design for a continuous flow process that is envisioned for zinc industrial applications. Specific quantitative data are shown for the use of a Zn-Ph cellos° in the iron-reams al process. Some introductory results on electrochemical potential measurements and impurity distribution with solution cycling are also giiven.

Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

"The 4c segment is a part of the ""Oman National Railway Project” linking the mining area in the surroundings of Thumrait and the port of Salalah. It is 90 km long and the last 40 km stretch crosses a mountainous area near the city of Salalah. The project includes the excavation of a 33 km double and single bore tunnel and 10 km of safety tunnels. This mountainous area is a holiday destination for Omanis, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, especially in summer time due to the monsoon rains. The tunnelling design had to take into account both these environmental constraints and the limestone rock formations crossed, which are affected by significant karst features. Given the context, the conventional tunnelling method has been preferred. INTRODUCTION The Oman Railway Project (Fig. 1) covers the construction of approximately 2,150 km of railway line for freight and passenger transport which will connect together Oman’s main towns and industrial sites and it will form part of the Arabian Peninsula railway system “GCC Project”. The non-electrified double-track railway line must guarantee a speed of 220 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and must guarantee the transit of AAR (Association of American Railroad) H and D plates using clearance envelope according to AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) requirements. The design alignment must have maximum radiuses of curvature of 3,250m and a maximum gradient of 1.0%. The project is divided into 9 constructional and functional segments. •,Segment 4c will be constructed in the southern region of Oman, close to the border with Yemen, to connect the town of Thumrait with the Port of Salalah. •,Segment 4c will run through the Dhofar region and will be mainly used by the freight traffic which currently travels by road."

Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

This paper describes high speed tunneling by drilling and blasting in a heavily populated urban area. The project consists primarily of mining 2500 m (8237 ft.) of tunnel through mica schist, excavating three shafts approximately 200 m (650 ft.) each and concreting lining 5300 m (17,400 ft.) of 7.34 m (24 ft.) inside diameter tunnel. The techniques developed and equipment utilized to ensure a high rate of tunneling advance are described. Extensive planning and good communications were especially essential in maintaining production on this project since tunnel mining, tunnel concreting, and shaft excavation all proceeded simultaneously from one common work shaft and a single heading.

A radioisotope probe (Minexan 202) capable of simultaneously analyzing a mineral slurry for five elements and pulp density has been developed by Outokumpu Oy, Finland. The probe is designed to operate immersed directly in a process stream, or it can be equipped with a flow cell through which passes a continuous sample of the main stream. A minicomputer (PDPII) is used to control the probes and calculate the assay data. This paper describes the probe as applied to slurry analysis and compares it to the conventional x-ray on-stream analyzer (Courier 300).

AMPS[. has completed a rationed grinding ball test in a 2.93 m x 2.93 m ball mill at Climax Molybdenum Company. The test consisted of purging the ball distribution formed by charging 100%, 76 mm carbon steel balls with a distribution formed by charging 50% 76 mm and 20% 51 mm alloy steel balls. The resulting change in ball surface area yielded improvements in both tons ground and fineness of grind with a significant reduction in total ball consumption. This paper summarizes preliminary studies leading to the plant test, grinding efficiency results, and future plans to optimize the ball charge.
