The current economic downturn has been at the center of media attention for several years. Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply-and-demand conditions, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. There have been numerous plant closings, project cancellations and employee layoffs. In this gloomy economic environment, it is easy to forget that the world?s gross domestic product (GDP) has more than doubled in real terms during the last 30 years. While current market turbulence may continue for some time, the long-term trend is unmistakably upward. Living standards are rising all over the world, thereby creating demand for food, clothing, transportation and housing. This translates into tremendous demand for the mining and mineral sectors. In the future, new capacity and plant expansions will be necessary to meet this need. These investments, which typically have a life span of 30-plus years, will have to be based on long-term economic considerations rather than current market conditions.

The last twenty years of development in Process Mineralogy are reviewed. Since the milestone review by Henley in 1983, which projected the concept and suggested closer working relations between mineral processing and mineral science, the second generation (1983-2003) has made significant progress. Examples are to be found in improved sampling and high-confidence flotation testing, and in automated quantitative mineral measurement. The recent addition of end-member studies has provided a clearer view of the overall ore mixture milled from its constituent geological components. In all, better predictive abilities have resulted from these improvements to Process Mineralogy. These improvements have led to more significant business impacts in mineral resource characterization, and in optimization of existing concentrator operations.

Foreword In loose ground and soft rock formations, mechanical tunnel boring is necessarily dependent on the adoption of shield machines and the application of adequate support or lining structures. These structures are erected either within or immediately behind the rear portion of the shield and provide the required reaction to the forward thrust. In competent rock formations where systematic support is not a requirement, hard rock tunnel boring machines generally advance by thrusting from a structure gripped against the tunnel walls. These machines may feature a more or less extended cutterhead shield or roof support, but when in weathered, fractured or otherwise weakened ground, or in fault zones filled with soft gouge, the gripper mechanism often cannot provide enough thrust reaction to advance the cutterhead. Under these conditions, early support of the arch and walls is generally required in the form of rock bolts, steel rings and laggings and some times of a primary concrete lining placed in the short section between cutterhead and grippers. A comprehensive critical review on the subject of sulfates-induced swelling behavior of lime-treated soils is presented in this study. Starting with the description of a well documented case study, the mechanisms behind the swelling behavior and the factors that affect this behavior are discussed. Then, the major experimental methods of sulfates content determination are briefly presented. Finally, an attempt is made to categorize sulfates level and equivalent risk for civil infrastructure. The paper indicates that limited work has been done, not only on identifying safe conditions for use of chemical stabilizers in presence of sulfate rich soils, but also on developing materials and methods to avoid, or at least mitigate, the problem.

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Should an arbitrary reduction factor be applied to laboratory compressive strengths when designing pillars? The answer is, as is the main contention of Peng's article, probably not. Many factors affect the strength of the material remaining in the pillar. On the other hand, outside influences will influence the strength testing results from the lab. This is not the first article, nor the last, to discuss the discrepancy between the two strengths. As was discussed in the article, actual pillar strength is affected by several factors. The two mentioned were: • The scale effect of discontinuities. How large must the pillar be so that the increase in discontinuity count with size will not decrease the strength. • Non-uniform strengths and lithologic units within the pillar. The scale effect of discontinuities is important. What size block must be tested so that the rock mass strength is actually measured? For a highly fractured rock mass, or coal with a high cleat density, this sample may be quite small. Conversely, if an unaltered, moderately jointed, quartz monzonite was examined, the sample block would likely be very large. This is the subject of ongo¬ing research. More to the point, if the tested sample is sufficiently large to model the rock mass strength, then no reductions should be made in the lab strength based on this factor alone. Non-uniform strengths and variations in lithologic units will also affect the pillar strength. I am not an expert in coal mines, having gained my experience in hard rock metal mining. These problems, though, are commonplace. However, strength sampling for pillar strength determination involves sampling material from within the lithologic unit that will form the pillar, not from pieces of material found on the floor. In addition, this sampling should cover the entire range of strengths of the material in the pillar-hard units (such as the partings described by Peng), as well as soft units. Testing results should then be included in the pillar design. Contrary to statements in Peng's article, at least one rock mass rating system (Laubscher, 1990) allows for the compositing of strong and weak units into a design rock mass strength that can be used for pillar design.

After several operational improvements to FMC's Westvaco Mine Longwall, an ergonomic and operational bottleneck resulted at the mobile belt tail/rigid conveyor junction. Ergonomic hazards, cutting time losses, and spillage problems near the belt tail were identified and targeted for improvement. FMC Westvaco, consulting with FMC Material Handling Division, corrected the bottleneck using an expandable/retractable conveyor system to fill the gap between the mobile belt tail and the rigid conveyor structure. This paper explains the operational expectations, defined before; the challenges, encountered during; and the real outcomes, measured after the installation of an expandable/retractable conveyor system.

And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

In mining operations, conveyors hold one of the most important keys to productivity. Sudden belt or belt-splice failures and extended repair downtimes can contribute to low material-handling system availability. Consequently, operations and maintenance personnel should have a thorough understanding of the available splicing and repair alternatives and how each method can affect the productivity and cost-effectiveness of their operation. The two primary methods of joining belt ends - vulcanization and mechanical fastening - affect the likelihood of sudden failure and repair times in different ways. The time-honored method of vulcanization remains popular in many conveyor-intensive underground and above-ground mining operations around the world. At first, vulcanization may seem attractive because, when done properly by trained and experienced craftsmen, it can match the original belting fairly closely and give the splice a smooth, continuous surface with no edges or seams to invite snagging.

Land uplift due to mine flooding has become a significant challenge with extensive historical mining activities, particularly in Germany’s Ruhr district. The cessation of coal mining operations has led to a gradual rise in groundwater levels, altering geotechnical and hydrological conditions and causing surface uplift. This study develops a system dynamics (SD) model to investigate the dynamic interactions of influential variables such as groundwater levels, total stress, porosity and permeability with land uplift over time. The model integrates causal loop diagrams (CLD) and stock flow diagrams (SFD) to comprehensively understand the system’s behavior. SFD illustrated that for a 10 percent increase in groundwater level, the land uplift increased by about +6 percent, and a rise of 200 percent in total stress caused an 18 percent increase in effective stress, which decreased the land uplift by about 20 percent. This study highlights the importance of dynamic modeling in informing land-use planning and mitigating the long-term impacts of land uplift after mine closures.

INTRODUCTION The need for substantial advances in underground excavation technology has produced considerable research activity on a wide variety of concepts under a variety of Government funded programs. One goal of this "Rapid Excavation" effort has been the development of a means to apply the well-known virtues, both technical and economic, of the drill and blast method in a continuous process. The spiral blast concept, aimed at this specific goal, has been funded for initial studies (1) by the ARPA Rapid Excavation Program and, for the experimental work reported herein, by the Department of Transportation (2). The economy enjoyed by the drill and blast method stems from two factors: explosive energy is relatively cheap; and this energy is released so as to cause rock fragmentation largely through tensile failures. The relative ease and efficiency of tensile rock failures have long been recognized. The drill and blast process of course cannot be truly continuous since drilling and blasting (and other necessary functions) simply are separate, distinct operations. Although some surface explosive work has been done to avoid the need for drilled blast holes (3) it does appear that the high performance associated with explosive excavation requires placement of the explosive beneath the rock surface. This paper describes studies of blasting pattern which, in simplest terms, replaces the occasional heavy blast of conventional practice with frequent, much smaller blasts. Leaders from the U.S. government and the global mining industry opened the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo with a keynote session centered on restoring U.S. critical mineral production and strengthening domestic supply chains. The session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” featured remarks from Ned Mamula, director at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Vicky Peacey, president and general manager of Resolution Copper, along with opening comments from industry leaders and conference organizers. The speakers emphasized that renewed government attention to critical minerals, combined with industry investment and technological innovation, will be necessary to meet rising demand for materials such as copper, zinc and rare earth elements. The session opened with remarks from Pat Risner, president of South32 Hermosa, followed by a safety share from 2025 SME President Bill Hancock. Hancock then introduced moderator Debra Struhsacker, who emphasized the importance of strengthening domestic mineral production and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Struhsacker, who is SME’s government and public affairs consultant, noted that decades of policy decisions have weakened the U.S. mining sector, leaving the country increasingly dependent on imported minerals. She pointed to declining domestic capacity, a shrinking number of mining schools and the closure of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1996 as factors that contributed to the current supply challenge.

During the production of silicon carbide a by-product is generated, which contains a mixture of crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide. Utilizing the difference in density, shape and surface properties of the crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide, separation tests were carried out with gravity concentration and flotation equipment. The flotation results of the fine fraction of the silicon carbide mixture were not encouraging. The processing of the coarse fraction of the silicon carbide mixture by jigs resulted in a high grade crystalline SiC concentrate with the desired specifications. The separation was largely influenced by the shape factor. An IHC-jig with a newly designed hydraulic drive was used to carry out the test program.

The Foothill Tunnel is a remote 16-mile-long untreated drinking water tunnel in the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Hetch Hetchy Water and Power (HHWP) system. The 14-foot horseshoe shaped tunnel, constructed in the 1920s, is lined intermittently with concrete over approximately 53% of its length, with the balance being unlined rock. After detailed planning, in January of 2020 Mott MacDonald and HHWP staff completed a visual inspection and documented the condition of the tunnel with electronic data collection, photographs, and video with audio recording. The result was a comprehensive condition assessment that identified key areas of the tunnel to monitor.

The historic Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, SD, was closed in December of 2001, after 125 years of operation. Since closure, the mine has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. Pumps in the 8000-ft deep mine were shut off on June 10, 2003. Post-closure flooding of the mine has resulted in rising water levels that reached the 5000-ft level in July of 2007. The rate of water inflow into the mine is about 750 gal/min. A plot of water level vs. time shows that the rise has not followed an exponential decay curve. When the pumps are turned on for dewatering, the rate of water-level decline will be monitored. Water in the Homestake mine contains arsenic derived from arsenopyrite. In samples of mine water, the median concentration of arsenic was below the surface-water aquatic life standard for beneficial use.

"In 2012, Superstorm Sandy (Sandy) caused extensive flooding in many of the tunnels in New York City. The inundation resulted in two distinct stress changes to the tunnel structures. The first stress change was water pressure on the inside face of the tunnel lining. The second condition related to the change in buoyancy of the tunnels. In areas where the tunnels were supported on rock and an adjoining area supported on soft soil, overstress issues arose. Numerical analyses were performed to assess the structural impacts of the tunnel water inundation; especially stress changes due to internal pressure as well as changes resulting from the buoyancy effects. The paper will discuss the assessment process and its results; it will demonstrate that the change in internal pressure were of little consequence, however the change in buoyancy resulted in significant increases in bolt stresses. INTRODUCTION Superstorm Sandy caused tens of billions of dollars in damage in the NYC metropolitan area. It also caused significant disruption to the transportation system by flooding most of the under river tunnels servicing Manhattan from the outer boroughs and New Jersey. The rehabilitation of the tunnels was of paramount importance to the restoration of the NY and NJ economies. With this rapid restoration, it was essential to determine whether the flooding of these tunnels caused damage to tunnel structures. A series of analyses were undertaken to ascertain whether the change in the stress conditions and buoyancy of the tunnels, due to the flooding, was significant enough to cause damage or over-stressing of the tunnel components. The effects of this unforeseen loading condition was a concern to the agencies operating these tunnels and were thus analyzed to ascertain if there were any adverse impacts. This was a concern because the majority of under river tunnels in NYC was built earlier in the century and constructed using bolted cast-iron lining segments. The cast iron, although quite strong in compression, is much less so in tension. Also, after nearly a century of use, the bolts connecting these segments together have under gone varying degrees of corrosion. The stress changes in both the liner segments and the supporting bolts were estimated for conservative ground support conditions to provide confidence that the flooding had not caused permanent damage."

INTRODUCTION To be effective and useful, monitoring of tunnel construction must be carefully planned throughout all steps. A vital and frequently overlooked step is a clear definition of the specific purposes of the instrumentation. Most tunnel construction monitoring has in the past been of benefit to research, the advancement of tunneling practice, wittingly or not. The development of monitoring instrumentation for the benefit of the project from which the data are recovered has very significant potential for risk and cost reduction of soft ground tunneling. A systematic approach to tunnel construction monitoring, from conception to full implementation, includes at least the following nine tasks or steps: Definition of benefits and purposes; design and project specification to draw full benefits; selection of monitoring parameters; selection of instruments and writing of specifications for procurement and installation; procurement and installation; reading and maintenance; data storage and retrieval; interpretation; implementation. Some of these steps are fairly easy and resolved through the use of established theories and technologies. The difficult ones are those that require the bending of minds, those that involve changes in the ways engineers design soft ground tunnels, the way owners pay for tunnels, and the construction is managed, inspected and controlled.
