The South African platinum industry finds itself in the midst of a rapidly evolving society that is no longer characterized by the apparent stability of the previous decades. The features of this society include increasing global competition, rapid technological innovation, a declining skills pool, major political transformation, a more challenging working environment as the mines reach deeper into the earth?s crust and a greater concern for human welfare. It is therefore axiomatic that new ways will have to be found to engage the all-pervasive change in the mining environment. Although in general terms project management is a universal endeavour for managing change, it takes place in a specific socio-techno-economic environment and geographical setting that gives it a particular context. The argument of this paper explores, analyses and synthesizes the impact of these changes on the emerging project management methodology. In essence, the management of change will inevitably contribute to the emergence of new dilemmas, issues and challenges. The change management process and procedures will also be affected by this change and in response, drive internal change of its own structures and organization. And, therefore, a new paradigm of project management will become apparent. A new project management model will then be proposed to the industry.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

Underground mining and particularly dipping narrow tabular orebodies are difficult to mechanize appropriately, given the low gold price and other external factors. Particularly in the deep level mines in South Africa, there is little choice left but to mechanize if the industry is to remain competitive and a significant global player. This paper presents a design philosophy for appropriate mechanization intended to generate solutions that can be implemented using the people currently employed in South Africa mines. The design philosophy is based on the ability of high-pressure water (hydropower technology) to deliver enhanced performance to users and on simplicity in the eyes of the user. Four examples of systems and equipment are described to illustrate the approach to Appropriate Mechanization. These include: • The Development End System, • The Monorail Raise Climber, • Automatic Pump Control Valves, and • The Energy Recovery Pump. The equipment is presented with the following critical issues foremost in mind: Safety, Working Environment, Performance, Cost effectiveness and Implementation. Although the appropriate mechanization approach is described in the context of the South African underground mining industry, much of the Appropriate Mechanization equipment has worldwide applications. The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.

These changes have led to an increased use by operating companies of the project and construction management services offered by engineering contracting companies. For a variety of reasons, this development has been slower in the metallurgical industry than in other areas of production, but that industry is also now showing an increasing trend in this direction.

"In an earlier paper the author explored the consequences of price-stabilizing effects, on an industry-wide basis, of various production strategies. These ideas have now been applied to an illustrative case of an individual mine. It is shown that the turning of production and financial policies can affect financial performance over a five-year period by as much as 22 per cent.No generality is claimed for the results and they would differ from mine to mine. It is, however, asserted that the results show that the proper turning of production, reserves and financial policies are more critical determinants of mine performance than has been realised. It is also asserted that the methods of dynamic analysis are the most appropriate means for studying this policy-design problem."

SYNOPSIS Many tabular mining problems can be modelled effectively by displacement-discontinuity techniques, which can be extended directly to represent fracturing on discrete planes and movements on planes of weakness. This paper presents a unified method for computing the energy changes that occur when multiple discontinuities intersect and are extended incrementally. It shows how this method can be used to deduce energy-release information for standard layout problems and, in addition, how the technique can be incorporated in numerical procedures based on the displacement-discontinuity method. Examples are given to demonstrate the effects of off-reef fracturing and the importance of stope-fault intersections during seismic events.

The planned extraction of the No. 1 shaft pillar at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine highlighted a number of potential problems. In spite of the relative shallowness, careful thought had to be given to stope phasing owing to the detrimental effect of the anticipated geology and the fact that uninterrupted hoisting was necessary. Extensive use was made of computer modellig to design the stope phasing, determine the influence of regional support and to predict the direction and magnitude of displacements in the shaft. The paper describes the success of this design approach, and measured displacements in the stoping horizon and shaft barrel are compared to those obtained from the original computer model

Most theoretical methods for the prediction of air-temperature gradients in underground airways always assume that the temperature of the entering air either remains constant or has only a slow seasonal variation. Large changes of temperature, caused by variations in atmospheric conditions on the surface, were measured in a fourteen-day period in air entering a horizontal airway. The changes in wet-bulb temperature were damped along the airway less uniformly than the dry-bulb changes; significant variations occurred in the wet-bulb temperature of the air leaving the airway. The damping was .associated with large variations in air-temperature gradients. Other causes of rapid changes In temperature are discussed. These changes must be taken into account in predictions of the frequency with which undesirable conditions can be exceeded at critical points in the ventilation circuit of a mine to allow proper planning of ventilation and refrigeration requirements.

The 8th Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/ University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd August, 1990, under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The primary object of this meeting was to give research students at UCT and US the opportunity to present their work to a critical audience from industry, and to obtain feedback regarding the research needs of the minerals industry. Although the emphasis of these symposia is on work in progress at US and UCT, they also create an excellent opportunity for informal discussion between academics and metallurgists in industry. The first symposium in this series was held in 1982 at US, while the symposium in 1989 was replaced by the International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, also held in Gordon's Bay.

The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

The most important event in the Institute's recent history is the strategic plan, which was drawn up in 1986 during Henry James's term of office. This plan was formulated at a workshop attended by most of the senior members of Council, and from it has flowed a number of changes that have been introduced over the past four years.

Rock breakage by drilling and blasting is fundamental to every hard-rock mining operation. The subject was an apt choice for a mining school because many technological changes have taken place since the subject was last presented some ten years ago. However, because of the development of surface mining, it was decided that two schools should be held: one for underground mining, and the other for surface mining. The School on Underground Mining was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in February 1986.Copper 87 COPPER 87 is an international conference organized by metallurgical and academic institutions of two of the largest producers of copper in the world, Chile and Canada.

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

Hulamin Rolled Products (Ltd) developed a high Mn and Si containing alloy, EN 4017 as a scrap consuming alloy from the waste generated in producing their range of clad products for brazing of inter alia automotive heat exchangers. The multifaceted composition of this alloy (Al -1.2 wt% Si -1.1 wt% Mn -0.2 wt% Mg-0.26 wt% Cu) suggested that it might display some degree of strengthening via precipitate formation of the Mg2 Si-types. The aging isotherms constructed showed that EN 4017 with 0.19% Mg reached a lower peak strength (YS~210 MPa and UTS~260 MPa)compared to the EN 4017 material with 0.43% Mg (YS~270 MPa and UTS~325 MPa). The higher Mg variant of EN 4017 was comparable with the age-hardenable reference alloy EN 6061. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies proved that the microstructure of age hardened EN 4017 contained a combination of ß', ß" and U2 phase after being aged at 175ºC for 65 h. The general microstructure contained precipitate free zones as well as grain boundary Si films, although these did not lead to significant embrittlement. The role of Mn dispersoids in the fracture mechanism of 4017 is also discussed. The article will compare the behaviour of EN 4017 with that EN6061. "A mineral resource constitutes the principal underlying asset of a mining company, and must be exploited and managed in such a way that maximum value is derived from it. Various asset management frameworks applicable to physical assets are available. This paper focuses on the extension of an asset management approach, particularly the Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) 55 asset management framework and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 55000 series of standards, to mineral assets. It is concluded that PAS 55 and the ISO 55000 series of standards can be extended to manage mineral assets, resulting in an integrated approach to sustainably optimize value from the company’s mineral assets. The benefits include improved returns on mineral assets, maximum mineral asset utilization, creation of an organizational culture focused on quality and continuous improvement, and assurance to stakeholders that the mineral assets are being efficiently managed over their entire life-cycle. In the context of this paper, a ‘mineral resource’ refers to both Resources and/or Reserves as classified by the SAMREC Code. IntroductionMining involves the extraction of valuable mineral resources from the Earth’s crust. A mineral resource is unique among natural resources in the sense that it is a wasting asset, which means that its value depreciates continuously with extraction. In addition, it is often impaired from time to time as commodity price changes (Macfarlane, 2011a). Since a mineral resource is a wasting asset there is a single opportunity available to optimize value from its extraction. Mine planning involves identifying a strategy to exploit the mineral resource in a way that maximizes value at an acceptable risk level throughout the life of mine (LOM). This optimum extraction strategy changes as economic conditions change, particularly commodity prices, as well as with improvements in orebody knowledge as mining progresses. It is the mineral deposit that competitively distinguishes two different mines and dictates the location of a mine; hence the adage ‘the orebody dictates’. Therefore, a mineral resource is the primary tangible asset possessed by mining companies and must be managed in such a manner that maximizes its value at an acceptable risk level (Macfarlane, 2011a)."

The practice of refractory lining in Fe Cr furnaces is purely based on the behavior of various refractories used in different parts of the Furnace at elevated temperatures. The choice of the pattern of lining is mostly done on traditionally based concepts. Refractory Lining of a furnace is the most crucial enabler for operational excellence for Ferro Alloys production. During the last few years, no major technological change has taken place in ?Refractory Lining Management?, only freeze lining concept is becoming popular. Many ferro chrome furnaces today, have the refractory lining problems especially at tap holes, resulting in shutdowns and production losses. The author with his experiences for the last 37 years in furnaces of all sizes tried to attempt to investigate into the reasons for premature failure of lining.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."
