[Several processes for recovering manganese from low-grade ores have been proposed3/4/5/ in which an aqueous slurry of the ore is leached with gas containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur dioxide as obtained from burning sulfur or roasting sulfide ores. The manganese dioxide is dissolved, and most of the sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfate, but an appreciable quantity of dithionate is usually formed, together with acid from oxidation of the sulfur dioxide. The over-all reactions may be represented as follows: (1) Mn02 + S02 = Mn++ + S04--. (2) Mn02 + 2S02 = Mn++ +S206--. (3) H20 + So2 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ 5S4--. (4) H20 + 2S02 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ + S206---.]

This report describes fluidized bed techniques employed by the Bureau of Mines at Minneapolis to differentially sulfatize the manganese in two samples of low-grade manganiferous ferruginous carbonate slates from the Cuyuna Range district, Minn. Suitable mechanics of operation were established. A space rate of 1.25 to 1.5 fps, a retention time of 3 to 3.5 hours, a temperature of 700° C, and a 10 percent sulfur dioxide gas in air were adequate for sulfatizing the slates by fluidization. Under these conditions the overflow product removal rate from the 4-inch-diameter reactor was 4 to 5 pounds per hour. The sulfur dioxide was used more efficiently in the two-stage treatment than in the single-stage treatment. However, approximately 80 percent of the manganese was converted to sulfate by either treatment.

Preliminary experiments are reported utilizing bacteria to leach manganese from a variety of domestic low grade manganiferous materials. In two large leaches manganese extraction ranged from 71.7 to 92.5 percent, and the products analyzed over 48 percent manganese. Nutrient requirements and leaching time experiments were made. The mechanism of leaching is not understood, but is different than the mechanism encountered in the microorganism accelerated leaching of copper in the presence of sulfide minerals.

The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 provides few specifics to assist the non-fuel mining and mineral processing industries of the United States in achieving pollution prevention (P2) compliance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) recognizes the absence of specific information to reduce pollution impacts from mining and mineral processing of hardrock and industrial minerals. Therefore, the USBM has prepared this publication to help reduce or eliminate environmental pollution and to assure the viability of these segments of the domestic mining industry. This report includes worksheets designed to help operators of mining and milling facilities to establish a P2 program. The report can also be used by citizen and environmental groups, State and local governments, and academia to gain an understanding of P2 as it relates to mining and mineral processing.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines work reported by the Metallurgical Division 4/ in 1934 shows the possibility of producing artificial manganese ore by pre- ferential oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen produced from manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minnesota. A three-step process is described as being capable of producing a ferrograde ore from this type of low-grade, domestic, strategic material. However, the melting temperature in the last step of the process that forms the manganese product is high, and the phosphorus content is not easily controlled. Also, the tenor of the manganese in the product is not comparable with other methods that use less process energy.Lofquist 5/ patented an improvement of the above three-step smelting method, in which sulfide was added to lower the melting point of the product.More recently, reputedly successful attempts have been made to reduce iron preferentially from manganiferous iron ores, simultaneously removing the phosphorus with the iron, by means of an unusually high temperature blast and excess coke.Anson G. Betts 6/ patented a process for the matte-smelting of manganese ores, in which the ore was mixed with pyrite and enough carbon or coke to serve as thermal energy and reducing, agent in a manner similar to the standard blast-furnace process. This process was intended to give pig iron, a manganese-iron matte, and a waste slag. Wood, Barrett, and Porath 7/ presented data on the treatment of low-grade, domestic, manganiferous iron ores and low-grade, domestic manganese ores by this Betts mattes pelting process."

A series of alloys was laboratory prepared by adding up to 4 weight-percent cobalt to the basic composition of type AM 350 (AISI 633) stainless steel. Aging curves were established for each alloy at 750° F, 850° F, and 950° F for lengths of time up to 100 hours. A series of annealed steels containing as much as 1 weight-percent cobalt was cold-rolled 50 percent and aged for 3 hours at 850° F. No improvement in hardness due to cobalt was observed in the steels transformed by heat treatment. Slight improvements in hardness were observed in the steels transformed by cold working.

In order to help assure an adequate domestic supply of minerals essential to the Nation's economy and and security by developing more efficient minerals extraction technologies, the Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center examined the application of autogenous microgrinding to calcium carbonate minerals. Treatment of minus 8-mesh Alabama marble resulted in a product 80 pct minus 5 micrometers (µm) at a power consumption of 70 to 80 kwhr/ton, This study shows that coarse particles of calcium carbonate minerals are effective as the grinding media for the autogenous attrition grinding of these minerals. The minus 8- plus 30-mesh fraction is an effective grinding medium (sand) for particles smaller than 30 mesh. A 40-pct-solids slurry and a sand: marble ratio of 2.5 appeared to be near optimum. For residence times above 13 minutes, products were greater than 80 pet minus 5 µm and greater than 54 pct minus 2 µm. Power consumption was uniformly low, ranging from 50 to 100 kwhr/ton of product depending upon the feed rate. One marble sample from Georgia was shown to be the most persistent grinding medium, with losses of less than half those of the other materials tested.

Instrumental analysis has become an indispensable tool in research and production of the rare-earth elements. This development can be attributed mainly to a combination of two factors--the marked chemical similarity of the rare-earth elements, which excludes classical methods of analysis, and the speed and accuracy of instrumental-analysis techniques. With continued improvements in methods of producing high-purity rare-earth elements, keeping pace instrumentally is becoming much more difficult. Accordingly, greater emphasis is being placed on improving instrumental limits of detection and accuracy. The methods employed most frequently for determining impurities in rare-earth elements involve use of the optical-emission spectrograph (3, 4)4/ and the spectrophotometer (9). Although numerous X-ray-emission spectrographic methods (6-8) have been developed for analyzing rare earths, these techniques have not included detection of low-level impurities. This investigation was conducted to find the precision and accuracy of X-ray fluorescence in deter-mining impurities in rare-earth oxides in the 0.01-to 1.0-percent-concentration range.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1974 twelve companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, three firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States, 24%; Northern States, 33%, and other Southern States 11%. Output of primary metal in 1974 was valued at $3.4 billion. About 80% of the secondary recovery was from new aluminum base scrap and 20% was from old scrap. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1974, building accounted for about 27%; transportation 19%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 15%; and consumer durab1es, 9%.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in the work of obtaining data regarding the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils from the various producing fields of the, United" States. Preliminary reports have been published that cover the eastern fields* and the' Rocky Mountain districts.** Since the appearance of these, reports: it has been suggested that certain additional data. I regarding the samples would be of practical value. It was believed that a knowledge of the viscosity of crude oil was desirable, particularly in connection with the design and operation of pipe lines. In accordance with this suggestion, the authors have made viscosity tests upon as many of the samples of the two series as wore still available for examination. Determinations were made at temperatures of 70° and 100°F., and in addition the oils were Subjected to the A. S. T M, pour-test*** to as certain the lowest temperatures at which they remain in a fluid condition.

A radon survey was made at five different locations in the Twilight mine near Uravan, Colo., to determine chances in radon concentrations in an inactive mine. Data were taken with a continuous monitor set for 1-minute count periods and readings were taken 24 hours a day for 9 days. The 12 readings per station each hour accurately showed how t w radon concentration varied during the day. From the data collected from the intake portal to station 4, the average radon emanation rate was estimated at 18 picocuries per second per square foot (pCi/sec/ft3). A daily cycle in radon concentration was detected that apparently was related to barometric pressure change.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, studied the use of manganese sea nodules for catalytic oxidation in air of 1 pct carbon monoxide, 1 pct propane, and 1 pct methane. Catalysts were prepared from both Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean nodules and compared with a platinum catalyst using a fixed-bed, steady-state microreactor with gas chromatographic analysis. Combustion temperatures with manganese nodules were 50° to 100° C lower than those with the platinum catalyst. Ion-exchange addition of rare-earth promotors to the nodule catalyst decreased combustion temperatures an additional 5° to 45° C.

This study, of the liquidus temperatures and densities of molten alloys of zinc and aluminum was made as part of a broader investigation on refining of scrap aluminum. One of the methods of refining involves the separation of liquid and solid phases by gravity segregation and by filtration. More accurate data were required on the liquidus temperatures and the densities of molten' mixtures of the metals than were available in the technical literature. New data on the liquidus curve were obtained by thermal analysis. The new temperatures are, for the most part) somewhat higher than those reported previously by other investigators. The density of molten mixtures of zinc and aluminum were found to be less than would be calculated by assuming that the two metals occupy the same respective molal volumes in solution as they do as pure metals.

Combustibility data are presented for 14 samples representing commonly used mine materials (treated and untreated wood, conveyor belt and brattice cloth). The combustibility data were obtained in the Factory Mutual Small-Scale Combustibility Apparatus (sample area -0.008 m ). The hazards associated with the mine materials were evaluated in terms of: 1) ignition/ surface flame spread using an ignition parameter (IP). A reasonable correlation was found between IP values and U.S. Bureau of Mines ratings for conveyor belts and brattice cloth and large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 2) generation of combustible vapors, using a vapor generation parameter (VP); 3) heat release using a heat generation parameter (HP). A reasonable correlation was found between HP values and the large-scale fire test data for treated and untreated timber sets; 4) generation of "smoke," toxic and corrosive products using a chemical compound generation parameter (CP); and 5) light obscuration by "smoke" using the light obscuration parameter (LP). All the wood treatments, except Fireguard, were found to be effective in reducing the fire hazard. The effectiveness of the treatment appears to be due to enhancement of carbon formation in the solid phase and enhancement of water formation in the vapor phase. Concepts are presented for establishing 1) the relationship between various parameters (IP, VP, HP, CP, and LP) and basic properties of materials, and 2) the usefulness of the parameters as criteria for the combustibility and fire hazard evaluations of the mine materials.

"INTRODUCTION The mineral found in natural-chromite deposits is never pure Fe0.Cr203, but rather one in which the Fe0 and Cr203 are in part replaced by Mg0 and A1203, respectively. The purest gravity concentrates from many domestic de¬posits consist of a mineral referred to as ""picotite,"" in which this isomorphous replacement is such that the ratio of chromium to iron is low. The Bureau of Nines has investigated methods of chemically beneficiating ores that contain too much iron to be classed as ""high-grade"" chromite 3/ Early investigations 4/ demonstrated that high-iron chromite or picotite ores can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that most of this reduced iron can be removed by acid-leaching the roast products to produce residues of higher chromium-to-iron ratios. tests 5/ indicated that commercially acceptable reaction rates cannot be obtained at roasting temperatures below 1,3000 C., using solid carbon as reducing agent. By this high-temperature reduction and subse¬quent acid-leaching, however, all ores investigated, regardless of the original composition, readily yielded residues considerably better than the minimum specifications for high-grade chromite.In an effort to obtain satisfactory reduction of chromite at lower temperatures, liquid and gaseous seducing agents were tested with varying success. Of the several reducing agents used, methane appeared to be the most promising and was shown to be highly effective at temperatures between 1,000º and 1,100º C., roughly 300º below the roasting temperatures necessary in solid carbon reduction. Further experiments indicated that mixtures of methate with some diluent (hydrogen or other nonoxidizing gas) gave better reduction than did methane alone."

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. The Carson-Iceberg RARE II study area, consisting o; 209,990 acres (134,983 ha), is on the crest of the Sierra Nevada in California, about 35 mi (56 km) south of Lake Tahoe. The area is divided into four parts: C4-986; C5-986; and B5-986, north and south portions. No mineral production has been recorded for the area. However, gold, silver, and tungsten resources and potential for additional resources have been estimated for the area and just north of area C4-986.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.
