Industrial minerals are extremely important to downstream industries and in our everyday lives. Their ontribution to the UK economy and to society as a whole is greatly underestimated. The industrial minerals sector is lacing increased pressures - environmental and competitive - both at home and abroad. These pressures are likely to increase. The Government, working in conjunction with the industry, can help the industry to meet these challenges. The role of Government is to establish a dialogue w ith the industry, to find out what its concerns are.and to ensure that these are taken into account in the draw ing up of policies that affect it. There is also a role for it in exploring, with industry, the linkages between environmental improvement and competitive advantage, and giving, w herever possible, early warning about regulatory developments. In order to maximise the effectiveness of links, industry needs to be coherently organised and represented both in the UK and in the European Union (EU).

"Prior to the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa in 1916 little attention was paid to the dust hazard and the necessity for its suppression in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines. Such precautions as were observed for the elimination of dust were related rather to the prevention of lead poisoning, which, in the early days of Broken Hill when large tonnages of lead carbonate ore were being won, was rather prevalent. Ventilation and hygiene followed the general practice in this and most foreign countries.This paper covers incidence and action since 1918, considering medical aspects and operating aspects. "

Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The massif contains large chromite bodies of "Alpine-type", ophiolitic affinity. Orebodies reach thicknesses of 150 m and sizes of more than 150 000 000 t chromite ore with average grades of 55-60 wt% Cr2O3. Chromites in the Main ore field are low-Al, high-Cr spinels which exhibit some variation in their Mg-Fe distribution. This differs markedly from high-Al spinels in peridotite host rocks and in narrow chromite pods which occur in the western and northern parts of the massif. Chromites carry silicate inclusions, often hydrous silicates such as amphibole. Chromites in massive chromitites contain micron size inclusions of platinum group minerals (PGM). Composite grains containing two PGM and, occasionally, a hydrous silicate are common. Os-Ir alloys rimmed by PGM sulpharsenides occur in narrow serpentine veinlets that cut chromite and are evidence for the reconcentration of PGE concomitant with introduction of As, probably during serpentinisation. Whole-rock PGE contents are highest in massive chromitites of Diamond Pearl mine (totals of 500 ppb). Chondrite-normalised PGE patterns of chromitites show negative slopes which are typical for ophiolitic, podiform chromitites in mantle sequences. The PGE patterns of host rocks are flat and rather depleted compared with those of chondrites and chromitites. Petrological data from unaltered host peridotites suggest a high temperature overprint leading to sub-solidus re-equilibration of olivine and spinel and to the growth of pargasitic and edenitic amphiboles

The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.
