"Traditionally, batch bench-scale flotation tests have been used for evaluating flotation reagents by comparing the results of tests done with various additions of the reagent in question. Usually, comparisons are made of the concentrate grade and recovery or some figure of merit involving an empirical combination of both. In some cases, statistical methods have been used to make the comparison and even to identify optimal combinations of reagents.None of the preceding technology utilizes the fact that flotation separations can be described by relatively simple kinetic equations that will serve not only to quantitatively describe the influence of a reagent, but will also aid in designing an optimal separation procedure. Examples of the use of a first-order rate equation for evaluating the impact of a reagent addition and for optimizing the reagent addition are given.IntroductionThe classical method of evaluating flotation reagents is to conduct batch bench-scale tests while varying one factor at a time. Some of the shortcomings of this technique have been pointed out and statistical design and evaluation of experiments has been advocated. Although the statistical approach is superior to the one-at-a-time method, it still is dependent on the results of a batch test conducted for a specific duration.That flotation is primarily a rate process than can be described by a first-order rate equation has been recognized for a long time, but the application of this knowledge to the evaluation of reagents has received little attention. In this work, it is demonstrated how the parameters of the first-order rate equation can be utilized to evaluate the influence of reagents on flotation."

"The auriferous mineralization at the Sigma-2 gold mine occurs in quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins emplaced in a fractured granaphyre layer in the upper part of a differentiated gabbro-diorite sill. Kinematic indicators show that fracture planes were active as strike slip, dip-slip (reverse) and tensional faults.Measurements of attitudes of fractures and movement vectors indicate eight different sets that can be grouped into three systems: (I) an east-west oriented system includes a subvertical set and two other sets dipping north and south respectively; (2) a subhorizontal system of two conjugate sets bisected by a third tensional set; and (3)a system of sub vertical conjugate northeast and north-northwest trending sets.Kinematic analysis indicates that the subvertical set of the east west system was subjected to dextral strike-slip movement activated by a northwest-southeast compressive stress whereas the bulk deformation resulting from the remaining and subsequent seven sets can be explained by a protracted subhorizontal north-south compressive stress.The valuable gold mineralization is found principally in the fracture-filling veins of the subhorizontal system and subordinately in the other sets; among these other sets, the NE trending subvertical one is slightly more favourable.The over-all tectonic picture is that of an early mild dextral strike slip faulting in a ductile-brittle medium followed by a general flattening involving, first, a vertical and, later, a lateral extension by fracturing in a medium that had become brittle.The structural features are such that the differentiated sill could not be the source of the auriferous hydrothermal solutions."

"The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. Historical Background A small-scale underground coal mine was opened in the Wabamun area in 1910 by the Conner Coal Mining Co. Ltd. "Using the concept of economic life and marginal analysis, it can be shown that proper equipment replacement timing can save a mining company many thousands of dollars. To assist management with determining the economic life of mining equipment, a new computer package has been developed. The package, called ERG (equipment replacement guide), incorporates all important economic factors related to equipment usage, such as operating costs, maintenance costs, salvage values, depreciation, volume of work, tax credits, inflation rates, ROJ, etc. The information is used in a series of equations which balance the costs of new equipment against the total cost of old equipment. The solution of the equations determines economic life and the point in time when the old equipment should be replaced. IntroductionIn an operating mine, equipment must eventually be replaced or downgraded for a variety of reasons. Fleets of haul trucks, dozers and other major pieces of equipment deteriorate over time until the mounting costs of maintenance and repair force either a major overhaul or the ir replacement by new and more efficient pieces of equipment.The question of determining the best time to replace old equipment has been approached in many different ways. Various methods, ranging from operating experience, intuition and physical necessity to sophisticated computer models have been devised to help cope with equipment replacement decisions . The best of the se will incorporate the most important economic factors related to equipment usage, such as operating and maintenance costs, salvage values, depreciation, work delivered, the cost of capital, tax credits and, of course, the effects of inflation.Economic TheoryThe fundamentals of equipment replacement theory grew out of the interaction between economics, engineering and finance. The use of annual cost comparisons and rate-of return calculations were helpful in handling situations in which assets with different finite lives were being compared. Later developments bringing together the concept of economic life and marginal analysis helped provide additional refinements to the theory. Taylorui showed that the displacement of an aging asset with a similar, but newer, asset can be justified economically when the marginal cost of keeping the asset one more year exceeds the minimum uniform annual cost equivalent of the proposed replacement."

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

"IntroductionCopper has been recycled ever since its discovery. Even in Graeco-Roman times recycling of this resistant, and thus valuable material was carried out as a matter of course. Just take, as an early example, the Colossus of Rhodes: after the figure collapsed during an earthquake, the bronze parts were melted down into ingots and sold.Copper is a material which can be recycled again and again because copper produced from recycling is not different from copper originating from primary materials. This is mainly due to electrolytical copper refining whereby not only the base metals but also the precious metals can be removed. In contrast, with aluminum and iron only the more electropositive elements can be removed by refining, and the resultant scrap must, therefore, be sorted mechanically into various alloys for subsequent smelting.The recycling rate for different base metals is given in Table 1. Despite this ideal prerequisite, the generally quoted recycling rate of copper of about 40070 appears rather low. However, it must not be forgotten that the recycling rate is defined as the ratio of the annually utilized quantities of copper scrap and the annual production figures (Table 2). Moreover due to the economic growth over the last 30 years the availability of copper from scrap materials is lower than its consumption because copper is principally employed in very long-life consumer durables and only returns to the recycling circuit after many years. The average time for the copper of some goods to be recycled is detailed in Figure 1."

Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner's role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner's chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company's location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

"This paper reports on a CANMET-funded examination of less conventional underground coal mining methods. These methods are documented and those that show the most promise for application to western Canadian conditions are discussed in detail.IntroductionIn recent years, mining considerations and economics have encouraged a transition from underground mining to surface mining. However, a change in market conditions or the development of superior underground mining methods may reverse this trend . Should this happen, the industry must be quick to respond and have information available on the latest developments of underground mining technology. In time, deposits of high-quality coal, which are easily accessible to surface mining, will be depleted and a change to underground mining methods will require consideration. The economic transition point between surface to underground will be a major determinant in maintaining a competitive edge. For these reasons, it is important to keep abreast of improvements in underground mining methods. To meet this objective, CANMET awarded a research contract to Monenco Consultants Limited, to investigate unconventional underground mining methods that show a potential for western Canadaoi. This paper presents the results of this investigation."

"Mining is a major energy intensive industry that contributes in consuming about 7% of the total world’s energy in which almost half in comminution. The underlying trait that drives energy consumption upwards appears to be somewhat persistent due to increasing in population, demands and growth rate. High grade resources have been/being depleted; consequently, low grade, high competent and complex ores with complicated geological structure are brought into perspective. For efficient extraction of values from such resources comprehensive multistage mining and processing strategies must be taken into account. Different treatment technologies, including ore sorting, must be considered to improve resource efficiency and productivity while taking into account the reduction in energy and water consumptions and related sustainability issues.The implementation of sorting technology in mining industry has a long past and its impacts on improving the overall efficiency of both mining and milling have been proven. However, the lack of complete understanding of its potential combined with ore complexity and low capacity of sorting machines have prevented the large scale application in mining industry. The application of X-Ray transmission sorting at Mittersill Tungsten Mine in Austria is presented and discussed herein. A technoeconomic analysis of the technology has revealed a significant potential of adding value to the concentration process. The rough feasibility study has given a strong feed-back on profitability and short time payback of about 2 years for the investment. Except the economic benefits the technology has positive environmental impacts. The potential for saving energy and water is large. The rough calculations have revealed that the energy saving can be up of 840MWh/annum. Furthermore, the ongoing cooperation between Mittersill mine and the sorting manufacturer is a good example on how the development of more competitive products, and product offerings, can be made."

"Technology exists today to blind drill a mine shaft 20 feet in diameter, unlined, over 3,000 feet deep. These shafts must be lined in the most economical, safe and expedient manner possible. A new technique of stacking precast concrete cylindrical sections in the unlined shaft has been developed to yield a dry and hydrostatically lined shaft .These sections must withstand an external radial pressure of 3,000 feet of water yet take up as little room as possible in the shaft . Using high-strength concrete, wall thicknesses may be kept at 2 feet. The outside diameter of the sections has been chosen to be 18 feet to allow for some annular space between the liner and shaft wall. The concrete sections are produced in segments 10 feet long weighing 75 tons each. During drilling operations, the concrete sections are cast and cured. After drilling operations are complete, a headframe is situated over the shaft. The unlined shaft remains full of fluid. A special liner running tool is mated with the section in three steel ports at the bottom of the section. The section and running tool are lowered into the hole, and the tool is disconnected and returned to the surface. Subsequent sections are lowered and stacked using the same operation. Grout is placed behind the liner to result in a dry shaft."

"La Mine Bousquet commenced operations in October 1979. Mining has been by underground methods from two main zones which dip steeply to the south , Sub-level stoping methods with following fill are used.The orebody and immediate country rocks are sericitic and highly schistose. The intensity of schistosity varies significantly and poor ground conditions prevail, especially within the orebody,Initially few mining problems were encountered but in May 1981, significant damage occurred. A system of stabilizing pillars was introduced with improved support systems. Predevelopment in ore and pre-drilling of blastholes were reduced with extra footwall development.Damage has continued to occur on a regular basis particularly during the spring thaw. Generally, the adverse conditions have been successfully overcome.IntroductionMost of the mining problems that have been experienced at Bousquet have been caused by poor ground conditions . This pa per describes these conditions, considers the cause and describes the ways in which the conditions have been dealt with . Despite the problems, Bousquet is a successful operation which in 1983 produced 95,000 ozs of gold from 514,000 tons of ore."

"Many of the ore bodies presently being developed are in remote locations and are, or will be, served by electrical power supply systems of limited capacity.The largest single components of the electrical systems of an underground mine are usually the production hoist drives; the power demands of these drives vary continuously throughout each hoisting cycle.Before 1970mine hoists were driven by either wound rotor induction motors or DC motors in conjunction with motor generator sets.Static Power conversion equipment now costs less to purchase and install and is claimed to be more efficient than motor generator sets. On the debit side, however, it can adversely affect the hoist motors, it operates at relatively low power factors, and it produces harmonic currents.This pa per discusses the effects of static equipment on both DC motors and AC power systems, and evaluates the relative consumption of the three classes of drives."

Is there a relationship among the Sudbury nickel ores, the Cobalt deposits, and the Huronian, Athabascan and North Australian uranium provinces? All are within intracratonic basins, with ore near basal unconformities. There are similarities in the geochemical "fingerprints" pointing to basic igneous rock affiliations. Some show a time relationship to basic igneous activity and to great rift systems. Many basic dykes show radioactivity at their edges. A spatial relationship between the uranium-cobalt-nickel ore at Midwest Lake, Athabasca, and basic igneous rock is reported. These remarks are not meant to imply, necessarily, a direct genetic connection between the basic dykes, etc., and the ore. In some cases, the relationship may be similar to that noted between basic and ultrabasic intrusives and volcanic massive sulphide ore deposits. Crustal thinning in these areas, associated with graben, appears to have favoured volcanic activity, as well as basic intrusives. Probably, the potential of the Huronian should be re thought . Athabascan-type ore may be present . New data on mineralization in Turner Township, Ontario, suggest this. The mineral possibilities of other basins should be reconsidered. It is to be remembered that the Athabascan and Kombolgie basins were neglected for many years. Intracratonic sedimentary-igneous basins contain many of the greatest mineral fields of the world.

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

"The non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry has been under extreme pressure since 1980 and significant changes are taking place, principally in the copper, nickel and lead industries. This paper reviews some of these changes, particularly with respect to smelter capacity, major technical trends, and the industry's response to increased energy costs and environmental constraints.The Canadian metal mineral production for 1985 has been estimated at a value of over $8 billion, of which half is derived from copper, nickel, lead and zinc production. It is in our national interest that the Canadian industry remain competitive in the world market and continue its traditional contribution to the Canadian economy. IntroductionPyrometallurgy by definition requires energy, usually in the form of fuel, and produces process gas streams which can no longer be discharged directly to atmosphere in most countries. While the industry has been under varying degrees of pressure over the past fifteen years, it is just since the early 1980s that major changes have taken place, due, to a large extent, to an oversupply on the primary metal markets and depressed prices. These factors, combined with a surge in the price of oil, have resulted in some trends developing which must be recognized by those in the industry who plan to be in operation and competitive in the next decade.Although the value of Canada's mineral production, in terms of constant dollars, has decreased by more than 35% over the period from 1980 to 1985, the bulk of this production is exported and the industry still makes a significant contribution to the Canadian economy."

"The objective of this paper is to help readers benefit from the practical experience of persons who have been engaged for several year s in the testing and repair of power transformers. Power transformers are known to be reliable pieces of equipment with expected usage of 25 to 30 years, but simple problems such as leaking radiators, or a bad contact on a tap changer, could shorten the life of a transformer. To ensure a longer life span, transformers should be checked on a regular basis.What is a Power Transformer?It can be a 90 MVA transformer for Hydro-Québec or a power transformer can be a 500 KVA unit in a small hospital. Generally a power transformer is an oil -filled type of 3 to 5 MVA. It can also be a dry type transformer, that should be treated in the same manner as oil-filled transformers, and some of the tests explained in this paper also apply."

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Many studies and investigations have been carried out on gas occurrences and emissions but our knowledge of the precise mechanisms of gas sorption, desorption and flow from coal is still incomplete. CRM and CANMET have agreed to fund a Quebec Mineral Development Agreement contract to capture this accumulated knowledge. Using VP-EXPERT to process the information and subdirectories to store regulations, the prototype access D-BASE III records on hoist information and LOTUS 123for simulating working conditions that meet local regulations and expert rules of thumb criteria. Objectives are to improve safety in emergency operating procedures, maximize hoist productivity and safety, and promote knowledge transfer to operators."
