"A laboratory-scale continuous procedure for the up-grading of naturally occurring tin ores, based on the principle of spherical agglomeration, is described. High recoveries are indicated. A proposed second stage suggests useful fractionation steps.IntroductionA LABORATORY-SCALE batch process for the upgrading of a tin ore using the principles of spherical agglomeration has already been described (1). This procedure consisted of milling, for about an hour, a precrushed ore with at least 200 per cent water, 0.2 per cent of a reagent such as tall oil (to render the de-sired ore particles hydrophobic) and about 3 per cent of a viscous petroleum oil. The feed material passed an 8-mesh Tyler sieve, and the percentages of re-agents are based on the dry weight of the feed. Du-ring the grinding, the hydrophobic particles transfer into the oil phase to produce coherent semi-solid bodies while the gangue stays preferentially in the aqueous phase. The concentrate can be separated from the gangue easily by a mechanical operation. Using an ore containing about 0.3 -0.5 per cent tin, grades of from 1.5 to 7.0 per cent were obtained by varying the pH of the system. Recoveries fell from about 80 per cent to as low as 50 per cent as the grade in-creased."

In 1976, Rio Algom Limited began the expansion of uranium production facilities at Elliot Lake. Quirke Mine was the only property in operation at the time, and plans were made to expand its milling capacity from 4,500 to 7,000 tons of ore per day. Following this expansion, other properties in the area will be reactivated to fulfill long-term contracts for uranium. As part of the expansion program, it was decided that in view of the escalating cost and impending shortage of energy, heat reclaim and conservation would be employed wherever practicable. In general terms, heat reclaim applications fall into three main classifications: ventilation, utility and process. Two of the ventilation applications and one process application will be described in some detail. Several other systems will be presented briefly as a matter of general interest. Some future possibilities will also be mentioned, together with their potential for economical heat recovery.

IN THE operation of most mines, hoisting ropes, made of steel, play a very important part in the conveying of men and material between surface and the underground workings. It is obvious that, in order to maintain a maximum degree of safety, certain restrictions must be placed on the loads that may be carried by hoisting ropes, as well as on other factors that may affect the life of the rope. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest ?a new method of defining the necessary restrictions. The three main stresses in a hoisting rope are the static stress, bending stress, and dynamic stress. Crushing stresses, which are also present, are largely indeterminate and may best be allowed for by proper grooving of drum and sheaves, by adequate inspection of cross-over points, and by limiting the number of layers on the drum. They will, therefore, not be considered in this analysis. In the ?recent Ontario regulations, the limiting conditions for the main stresses are specified separately. The static stress is limited by setting a minimum static safety factor of 5.0 The dynamic stresses are allowed for by specifying a minimum capacity factor of 8.5, which has the effect of increasing the safety factor required at smaller depths in a uniform manner. The bending stresses are limited by calling for a drum-dia./rope-dia. ratio of at least 60 for ropes up to 1 inch in diameter and 80 for ropes greater than 1 inch in diameter. One disadvantage of this method is that the controls are too rigid and do not allow the operator sufficient freedom of action within safe limits.

TIMBER HANDLING presents a problem for any mine where appreciable amounts are used. This problem is accentuated where the shaft compartments are too small to allow a loaded timber truck to be lowered in the mine cage. When Normetal Mining Corporation, Limited, found it necessary to resort to square-set mining it faced this problem of getting large quantities of timber down a shaft that was also required for hoisting ore. A 'timber car' that could be suspended under the cage was developed to overcome this difficulty. Production started at the Normetal mine in 1937, at the rate of 250 tons per day. In 1938 a winze, known as No. 3 shaft, was sunk from the 800-foot level ?to the 1,385-foot level. This was later raised to surface and then deepened to 3,275 feet in three stages and became the main production shaft. The portion of the mine below the 3,070-foot level is serviced by a winze, locally referred to as No. 4 shaft, which has been developed for stoping down to the 3,990-foot level and which has been deepened to the 5,365-foot level. No. 3 shaft has two hoisting compartments, each 4 ft. 6 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers, through which the ?ore must be hoisted and timber and supplies lowered.

"I AM CONSCIOUS of the honour you pay me by having invited me to address you on the subject of the Rehabilitation of the Sydney Steel Corporation. The true architect of the revival and rehabilitation is Robert Burns Cameron. Because of the numerous myths which have grown up around what seems to be the miracle of the revival of the Sydney Steelworks, I propose to go back to the time when they came under the full control of the Province, on the 1st of January, 1968. Late in 1967, the decision was taken by Premier G. I. Smith to keep the Steel Plant running for at least another year, in an endeavour to see whether the enormous losses being sustained by Dosco could be reduced to a level which would permit their continuing operation. When that decision was taken, Dosco was to continue management until the 30th of April, 1968, and in the intervening period, the Provincial Government would seek management of the right calibre to ensure that an objective view of the Steelworks operations could be secured. By a combination of circumstances which can only be described as most felicitous, the man selected for the task was R. B. Cameron. He very quickly determined that to permit Dosco to continue management of the Steelworks until April 30 could only result in heavy losses to the Province and a consequent deterioration in the already critical financial position and a declining morale of the worke"

The Boliden AITIK copper mine is located 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. A pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2005 with the aim of increasing the capacity of the existing processing plant. After analysis, options to upgrade the existing plant were abandoned in favour of building a new processing plant, with higher capacity and therefore greater profitability. A new plant could be designed with greater flexibility to make potential future expansions easier. A feasibility study for a new 36 Mt/y processing plant including fully AG grinding circuits and flotation was completed in 2006. The project was approved by the Boliden board shortly thereafter. Construction started in the beginning of 2007 and was completed during 2009. Commissioning of the new plant was undertaken in the first half of 2010. The grinding circuit consists of two lines with each line consisting of a 22.5 MW AG mill and a 10 MW Pebble mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The nominal production level is 2 200 t/h for each grinding line. This paper presents the start-up and operation of the grinding circuit.

"Many mentorship programs are available to Canadian mining industry employees. Some are company-led initiatives, whereas others are provided through educational institutions or nonprofit organizations. In 2016, a national survey was launched to gain insight into perceptions of what mentorship is, learn about available programs, and collate experiences with formal and informal mentorship opportunities. This paper outlines survey findings and delivers recommendations to industry for consideration in employee mentorship programs. In addition, mining industry leaders share their mentor/mentee perspectives. The intent of this paper is to bring awareness of best practices that can help employees grow and develop in their profession.RÉSUMÉ Les employés de l’industrie minière canadienne ont accès à de nombreux programmes d’encadrement. Certains sont des initiatives menées par les sociétés, d’autres sont proposées par le biais d’établissements d’enseignement ou d’organismes à but non lucratif. En 2016, une enquête à l’échelle nationale a été lancée en vue d’obtenir des informations quant à la perception de ce qu’est réellement l’encadrement, de découvrir les programmes proposés et de comparer les expériences aux possibilités d’encadrement, officielles ou non. Cet article présente les résultats de cette enquête et fournit des recommandations à l’intention de l’industrie afin qu’elle les prenne en compte dans ses programmes d’encadrement des employés. En outre, des chefs de file de l’industrie minière partagent leurs points de vue conseillers/protégés. L’intention de cet article est de sensibiliser les employés aux meilleures pratiques, ce qui les aidera à évoluer et à se développer dans leur profession. INTRODUCTIONThis paper about mentorship in the mining industry is based on voluntary responses to a cold survey, written and circulated by the authors. In 2016, a link to an online mentorship survey was circulated to males and females in the mining industry with the belief that mentorship programs should be available to everyone. The link was delivered via the authors’ personal networks in mining, the CIM Reporter, Women in Mining (WIM) email blasts, LinkedIn, and Facebook. This paper summarizes the answers to the survey questions. The paper is a follow up to one by the same authors (Nyabeze, Espley, & Beneteau, 2010), which was written to gain insight into why women join and stay in the mining industry, and to learn why the overall representation of women is low."

"1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

"The degree of uncertainty associated with a natural diamond resource is important to quantify from the time of discovery through the production lifetime. Data collection occurs during the discovery, exploration, delineation, and production or recovery phases. Quantifying the relationship between data and uncertainty is an important component of project valuation. The value of data is measured as their potential to reduce uncertainty if they are collected. A method is developed using Monte Carlo simulation for predicting resource uncertainty and valuing data during critical phases of development, particularly discovery and exploration. The technique is applied to diamond pipe deposits.RÉSUMÉ Il est important de quantifier le degré d’incertitude associé à une ressource diamantifère naturelle, depuis le moment de sa découverte et durant toute la durée de l’exploitation. La collecte de données se fait durant les phases de découverte, d’exploration, de délimitation, et de production ou de récupération. La quantification de la relation entre les données et l’incertitude est une composante importante de l’évaluation du projet. La valeur des données est mesurée en tant que leur potentiel à réduire l’incertitude si elles sont recueillies. "The Sullivan mine; at Kimberley in southeastern British Columbia; is the largest silver-lead-zinc mine in the Empire and one of the largest in the world.The original discovery was made in 1892 by four prospectors. Until 1899, when the branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway from Cranbrook to Kimberley was completed, little work was done on the property. In 1900, systematic development was started, and during the next 3 years 5,000 tons of ore was shipped to the smelters at Nelson and Trail. By 1903, some 300,000 tons of ore was developed, and a smelter was started at Marysville, about 5 miles from the mine. However, this smelter closed down in 1907 because of metallurgical difficulties after treating 75,000 tons, and the property came under the control of the American Smelting and Refining Company. An option on the property was taken in 1909 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, who exercised their option in the following year. During the next 5 years by selective mining and sorting 188,000 tons of high-grade ore was produced and shipped to Trail. This tonnage came from the upper levels, about 4,600 to 4,800 feet in elevation. At the same time, deep drilling down to the 3,900-foot level showed the presence of an immense body of complex ore. In 1915, the main adit-the 3,900-foot level-was started, and by 1919 this had been driven a distance of 2 miles to develop the ore above this level. Meanwhile, progress was being made in overcoming the milling problems. An interesting account of this work was written by the staff ( 4). In 1923, the first unit of the present concentrator was erected, with a capacity of 2,500 tons a day, and thereafter the rate of production increased rapidly. In 1934 it was around 8,000 tons a day, and to date a total of about 30,000,000 tons of ore has been sent to the mill. In recent years, a considerable part of the production has come from levels between the 3,900-and 3,350-foot, which were opened by an internal incline shaft started in, 1930. In 1942, tin was added to the products separated at the concentrator."

The properties required for a com-pound to form useful thermoelectric materials are described. Uranium compounds which might have these properties are reviewed. Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). "This paper outlines geotechnical conditions that commonly exist in underground, hardrock mines and the challenges posed for ground-support steel, specifically rockbolts, used in these environments. A model is proposed whereby the in-situ stress and rock-mass classifications (based on Bieniawski’s rock mass rating) form the basis of determining the desired steel properties of the rockbolts used. Based on the ASTM F432 bolting specification, recommended minimum steel properties are defined for three ranges of in-situ stress levels, each with their own six ranges of RMR values. Heat treatment for the steel can be specified once these minimum steel properties are known.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article décrit les conditions géotechniques qui existent fréquemment dans les mines souterraines de roches dures et les défis que cela pose pour le soutien de terrain en acier, plus spécifiquement les boulons d’ancrage utilisés dans ces environnements. Un modèle est proposé dans lequel les contraintes in situ et les classifications de la masse rocheuse (selon la classification de la masse rocheuse de Bieniawski) servent de base pour la détermination des propriétés désirées pour l’acier des boulons d’ancrage utilisés. "The Direct Nickel process is a hydrometallurgical technology being developed to treat nickel laterite ores by leaching at atmospheric pressure. The leaching process uses nitric acid in a relatively large excess, is thus non-selective, and much of the soluble iron goes into solution. The first stage of solution purification is iron hydrolysis and the Direct Nickel process utilises the colligative properties of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to enable the removal nitric acid of varying concentrations via distillation. Once sufficient acid has been removed, the boiling point of the solution is increased allowing high temperatures (up to ~170°C) to be achieved under atmospheric pressure. The higher temperatures initiate the precipitation of the iron primarily as hematite and allow the removal of the acid generated by the hydrolysis reaction. The rejection of the iron is near complete with solution tenors typically falling from 65 g/L Fe, or more, to less than 50 mg/L Fe. The separation of clean nitric acid from the PLS at this stage allows for relatively simple acid recycling. A hematite product with iron content above 60% could also provide an extra revenue stream.INTRODUCTION The Direct Nickel (DNi) Process is a novel hydrometallurgical processing route designed to treat all types of nickel laterite ores in a single flow sheet using nitric acid under atmospheric conditions. A simplified flow sheet is shown in Figure 1.Between 2007 and 2012 the process was developed and refined at Direct Nickel’s laboratory within the CSIRO Minerals’ facilities in Perth, Australia, and in 2013 a series of pilot plant trials were run under continuous operating conditions. The process is designed to treat both limonite and saprolite in the same flow sheet, and after comminution, the blended ore is mixed with nitric acid and leached just below boiling point in agitated atmospheric leach tanks. The acid is added in excess, so typically for a blend of limonite and saprolite the acid addition can be in the order of 1.8-2.0 t acid/t dry ore. After a residence time of between 4-6 hours the majority of the soluble metals have leached into solution and the insoluble leach residue is separated from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) via counter-current decantation."

"The design, development, and verification of the Lovat 7.6metre diameter full-face tunnel-boring machine is reviewed. Programmatic and technical challenges are outlined with a review of the specifications and the design to meet these requirements. Subsystem designs are presented for the waste material removal, ventilation, cutter head, structural support, advance technique, water removal, and interfaces with the Donkin-Morien Mine. The techniques used to verify that the design meets the requirements is by testing in the Lovat factory and in the field. Certification of the machine for use in a methane environment is discussed.IntroductionStudies have concluded that the average annual worldwide tunnel construction is 500 kilometres at an estimated average co st of $3,400 U.S . per linear metre. The total market value of the tunnelling industry is estimated as approximately $1.7 billion U.S. per annum. Of this, the current market for tunnelboring machine excavation is approximately $270 million U.S. per annum worldwide with a further potential of $250 million if more contractors are convinced that Tunnel-Boring Machines (TBM) are more suitable than conventional techniques. The worldwide civil tunnelling market has the potential to double each year in the next 5 to 15 years. Growth has been identified in the energy and mineral resources sectors of the economies of many nations and a significant volume of machine tunnelling studies and trials are presently underway for the extraction of coal, uranium , heavy oil or oil sand fuels, metallic and non-metallic industrial minerals and base metal or rare earth ores. Further tunnel projects for regional transportation, waterpower, irrigation , high density urban transportation, storm water sewers and water supply purposes are continually being implemented with new concepts like military security facilities and underground storage schemes being considered.Lo vat Tunnel Equipment of Rexdale, Ontario, the only Canadian manufacturer of TBMs was incorporated in 1973 to manufacture so ft ground tunnel-boring machines to satisfy this growing market demand. Lovat has produced an average of 5 machines per annum during the period 1972 - 1982 and has established an international reputation for competitive costs, quality of construction, after-sales service, and reliability. As of June 1982 Lovat TBM's have been used to tunnel over 240 km in projects throughout the world."

THE development of Reserve Mining Company's pelletizing practices began in 1949 in a pilot plant located at Ashland, Kentucky. Three years later the participating companies -Armco Steel Corporation, Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company and Republic Steel Corporation concluded the work and the small plant was shut down. Oglebay Norton and Company was the operating manager and Armco Steel Corporation furnished labor and services. Arthur G. McKee and Company were the designers and constructors. The equipment flow sheet that was employed in that pilot operation is shown in Figure 1. This was Reserve's first step from the laboratory work per-formed by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota in developing a commercial operation. The plant used New York state concentrate, purchased from Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's Benson Mine. This concentrate, minus 14 mesh, 64.3 per cent Fe, 5.7 per cent Si02, was processed at Ashland to 80 per cent minus 325 mesh in conventional ball mill, classifier, thickener, filtering

Al powder is used extensively as an antioxidant in carbon-containing bricks, but it cannot be used directly in water-based carbon-containing castables due to its hydration tendency. To overcome this problem, in this work, SiO2-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) inorganic-organic hybrid coatings have been prepared via sol-gel processing, and used to coat Al powder. The hydration behaviour of uncoated and coated Al powders has been investigated in water at 60 or 100°C for 36h by examining phase and microstructural changes. While significant hydration is detected in uncoated Al powder, no obvious hydration is detected in coated Al powder, indicating that its hydration resistance has been greatly improved. Oxidation resistance of graphite coexisting with uncoated or coated Al powder was also investigated in air at 1250°C for 1.5h. The oxidation ratio of graphite coexisting with coated Al powder was similar to that of graphite coexisting with uncoated Al powder, indicating that both powders showed similar antioxidising behaviour. This, along with the much improved hydration resistance, makes the coated Al powder a potential antioxidant in carbon-containing castables systems.

Located in North West Tanzania, Buzwagi is an underground narrow-vein gold mine owned by Barrick Gold. The plant was commissioned in 2000. The reserves are estimated to be more than 25 years. The ore, containing gold, silver and copper mineralization in sulphides, is processed at 3,300 tpd. This paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the performance of an ammonia-cyanide leaching approach to recover gold from two samples. Coarse gold was recovered by gravity prior to leaching. The gravity tailings had the following composition; 1.97 g/t Au and 0.31% copper for the medium cyanide soluble copper (MCSC) sample and 2.80 g/t Au and 0.53% Cu for the high cyanide soluble copper (HCSC) sample. Experiments were conducted for 72 hours in stirred tank reactors with monitoring and control of parameters. The straight cyanidation produced gold extractions of 76.1% for the MCSC sample and 84.6% for the HCSC sample. Associated cyanide additions were 6.1 kg/t and 11.5 kg/t respectively. The gold extraction of the MCSC sample was improved to 88.8% using 350 ppm NaCN and 700 ppm ammonia. The associated cyanide and ammonia additions were 2.5 kg/t and 1.7 kg/t respectively. For the HCSC sample, 82.5% gold extraction was obtained using 500 ppm NaCN and 600 ppm ammonia. The cyanide addition and ammonia additions were reduced to 3.8 kg/t and 1.0 kg/t respectively. No significant decrease in gold extraction was noticed when the cyanide and ammonia were reduced to 150 ppm and 500 ppm respectively. In the presence of ammonia, a significant amount of cyanide was oxidized to cyanate by the cupric ion. In the absence of ammonia, the formation of copper cyanide was the predominant reaction responsible for consumption of cyanide.
