In backfill grouting for underground coalmines, the filling materials strengthen the caving rock and support the overlying strata to reduce surface subsidence. The broken roof strata fail and collapse during mining operations without appropriate supporting measures being taken. It is difficult to perform continuous backfill mining on the working face of such roofs using the existing mining technology. Therefore, in order to solve the above problems, fly ash and mine water are considered as filling materials, and flow characteristics of fly-ash slurry are investigated through laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. Laws governing the diffusion of fly-ash slurry in the void of caving rock masses and in the void between a caving rock mass and a basic roof are obtained and verified. Based on the results obtained from the above analyses and field conditions at the Zhaoguan coalmine, Shandong Province, China, a cave backfill grouting system of the hauling pipeline is developed and successfully tested at the 1703 working face. The results demonstrate that a filling rate of 43.46 per cent is achieved, and the surface subsidence coefficient of the grouting process is found to be 0.475. Compared to the total caving method, the proposed system is found to achieve a reduction rate of 40.63 per cent. This effectively helps in lowering the value of the surface subsidence coefficient. Fly ash and mine water, considered as primary materials in this study, also play a significant role in improving the air quality and water environment.

Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. "Sustainable development has become an issue of ever increasing importance to the mining industry. The Ernst & Young (EY) mining industry risk radar regularly shows several sustainability elements in the top ten risks, with social license the number three risk in the 2014/15 survey. This is supported by the Fraser Institute survey results of 2013 showing that 36 per cent of responding companies indicated public opposition had affected their permitting and approvals process.Addressing these issues in a strategic way across a mining business that is then translatable to actions at operational level has remained an elusive goal in the industry. In addition the environment and community issues are commonly viewed as somewhat separate from financial and production issues and as a compliance cost rather than a value add. In their Harvard Business Review paper of 2011, ‘Creating Shared Value’, Porter and Kramer outline changes in thinking required for companies to improve their business sustainably through considering the societal issues impacted by their operations and products. Along the lines of ‘doing more with less’ companies’ value chains can be redefined to reduce energy, transport, water or other resource usage leaving additional resource for societal usage and/or reducing environmental impacts. This paper explores the linking of the holistic Five Capitals-based approach with the creating shared value (CSV) concept to help businesses unleash the benefits of innovation. Previous papers have demonstrated the potential for Five Capitals approach to create strategic value through sustainable development. Building on previous work, this paper provides an overview of the current status of holistic approaches to mine management and presents the application of the CSV concept on an African mine currently undertaking capitals-based strategic planning. The Kellogg slag fuming model is extended to apply to the Port Pirie plant which uses recuperative heating of secondary air. Exten- sive investigations of plant operations pro- vide parameters for use with the model, and verification that the resulting model provides simulation which is very close to actual plant performance. The model is used to_deter- mine optimum slag fuming operating conditions, and the results of several other investigations with the model are briefly described.

The advantages of rapid and accurate analyses are becoming appreciated in many industries today and have resulted in a great increase in the number of samples received by their laboratories. This has caused some firms to consider the installation of one or more of the instruments available for analytical chemistry. In this country there are relatively few people with experience of instrumental methods and it is difficult for a firm considering the installation of such equipment to assess the advantages which instruments may give them, and to decide which instruments, if any, will be of most use to them. The object of this paper is to give a brief survey of instrumental methods in the field of inorganic analysis. Instrumental methods of analysis have numerous advantages when used correctly. They enable extremely rapid analyses to be made in many cases, e.g., analysis of refined lead by purely chemical means takes about two days whereas spectographically the analysis can be completed in approximately one and a half hours. The accuracy ofinstrumental methods, generally between 1 and 5%, is higher than most chemical methods for small percentages of impurities. Furthermore, if the instrument can be calibrated against absolute standards the errors are usually random and not biased to one side of the correct result. The sensitivity is high, enabling in many cases the detection and determination of smaller percentages than can be detected chemically. This high sensitivity enables and, in some cases, requires the use of very small samples, and results in considerable savings in reagents, allowing the analysis of considerably more samples without undue loss...

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

Two drill core samples of haematite/goethite from the Robe River (Western Australia) channel iron ore deposits (CID) were dated using (U-Th)/He methods in order to constrain the timing of iron oxide formation and thereby provide a temporal context for CID genesis. (U-Th)/He ages (He ages) from these samples range from the late Oligocene to Late Miocene and despite a high degree of scatter, they corroborate relationships expected from the internal ooidal stratigraphy: For individual ooids, the ages from haematitic core are older than or indistinguishable from the ages of the surrounding goethitic cortex. The goethitic cortices are, in turn, older than the ferruginised wood fragments recovered from the cementing goethitic matrix.The data suggest the following succession of ore formation phases:• Haematitic cores in ooids of both samples formed in the Early to Middle Miocene.• Goethitic cortices of both samples formed in the late Middle to early Late Miocene. This appears to be the age of goethite cortex formation regardless of depth in the core, which does not support the top-down infill model, genetic model proposed by Heim et al (2006).• Wood fragments form a prominent component of the matrix and were ferruginised during the Late Miocene. Thus the data suggest that the unique environmental conditions for the CID formation existed during the Miocene.A methodological implication of this study is that the temperature utilised for He-extraction from iron oxides has a critical impact on the mobility of parent nuclides. The typical ~1100°C laser heating used for crystalline minerals like apatite or zircon induces loss of U and Th and results in erroneously old ages.

The Hodgkinson Province forms the northern part of the Tasman Orogen and contains the most extensive outcrops of Silurian - Devonian rocks in Queensland. Deep-water, marine siliciclastic sequences (mainly turbidites) dominate most of the province except near the western margin where mafic volcanics and fossiliferous limestones characterise much of the succession. It is difficult to apply normal stratigraphic mapping techniques to the Hodgkinson Province because of extensive stratal disruption by numerous thrust faults, the general lack of stratigraphic and structural markers, and the unfossiliferous nature of much of the succession. Nevertheless, several distinct units have been delineated although their internal stratigraphy or boundary or superpositional relationships are uncertain. Ordovician strata, as well as two major unconformities have been recognised in the western part of the province. Several models have been proposed to explain the evolution of the Hodgkinson Province. Although there is no general agreement most recent researchers favour an extensional tectonic regime.

The Mining Act (1992) and the Petroleum Act (1980) provide for the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take up equity holdings in mining and petroleum projects. The price the Government pays for its share is based on the historical cost of exploration and development on the project to the date of government equity acquisition. The equity level to be acquired is not fixed and ranges up to 30o for mining and up to 22.5s for petroleum at the discretion of the Government of the time.The objective of this paper is to examine the pros and cons of State equity holdings in PNG from the point of view of both the State and the developer. Using an economic model of the PNG mining taxation system an assessment is made of the effective return on investment received by the State from such equity holdings. The results are compared with government revenues from other taxation measures.

The Hellyer concentrator of Aberfoyle Limited commenced production in 1989 processing a fine grained, massive sulphide ore containing Zn, Pb, Ag, Cu and Au as values. Four concentrates are produced - copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk (Pb/Zn) - with overall payable recoveries (1991) of 80 per cent Zn, 55 per cent Pb, 50 per cent Ag, 30 per cent Cu and ten per cent Au. Metallurgical development work commenced immediately after plant commissioning, and continues. The flotation response and liberation analysis on a size basis highlighted reagent balance problems associated with tower mill regrinding of sphalerite, poor conditioning of flotation pulps, poor selectivity for fine galena, and insufficient liberation. These were the main causes of values lost to tailings, values reporting to the 'wrong' concentrates and of impurities in the concentrates. Modifications to tower mill regrind circuit operation, and the use of improved conditioning techniques have greatly improved concentrator performance, particularly in the finer (-5 micron) size fractions. Studies of concentrator and laboratory flotation by size and liberation analysis are the basis of diagnostic metallurgy. The techniques used to evaluate the improved concentrator performance are discussed.

A brief introduction is given of the scale and of some special features of South African gold mining; it is noted that great depth of mining and narrowness of the reefs, and hardness and abrasiveness of the rock are the main sources of the problems of the industry. The most inhibiting problems are: Excessive rock pressure occcurring in conjunction with rockbursts, hot and humid working places due to high virgin rock temperature and auto-compression of the air, and low level of productivity. Conventional solutions applied ordinarily in mining do not promise to eliminate, or even alleviate, these difficulties.

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

"In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. Sinter quality depends heavily on the mineral phases, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which are formed upon solidification of the sinter melt. The interaction of sinter initial melt with its surrounding materials will impact the properties of the sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure and quality of resultant sinter. Spreading and penetration are two important phenomena dictating the interaction of the initial melt with its surrounding materials, such as nuclei and adhering fines. In the present study, the penetration behaviour of an initial melt into various natural iron ore substrates of different ore types during sintering was studied using a laboratory scale penetration testing procedure. The penetration depth and width were found to increase with temperature and vary with the type of iron ore due to their unique pore structure and mineralogical texture.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a well-established geophysical technique generally used for shallow civil engineering applications, has, in the last decade, found increasing acceptance as a complementary tool in mineral resource evaluations. As new sites are trialled with the method, a greater understanding is being garnered regarding the most suitable environments for long-range radar. Although successful projects have been conducted worldwide for mineral sands, iron ore and alluvial projects – tropical weathering environments have produced some of the most impressive results. Specifically, tropical nickel laterites have shown to be, with some notable exceptions, ideal GPR environments.Such high-resolution remote sensing has particular relevance to bulk commodities or those which possess significant rheological variation within geological units, and has led to some innovative downstream uses within exploration, project development and the larger mining industry. In this paper, we examine the application of long-range GPR in Indonesian nickel laterite deposits in general, to highlight some of these novel applications with particular reference to resource modelling, mine geology and operational economic implications.CITATION:Francke, J, Smith, D and Ramdhani, A, 2014. Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

The results of the washing of coal are often presented by using Partition Curves. By analogy, it is possible to express the results of screening by using similar partition curves. As in the coal washing processes, this method determines the accuracy of screening and is also suitable for different separations depending on the difference in size distribu- tion.
