Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

Mr Chairperson, respected leaders of the mining industry, ladies and gentlemen;   Good morning, Kiora, Nihao.   I am very honoured to give a speech to the 2005 New Zealand minerals conference. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the Ministry of Economic Development to invite me to be part of this important event.   Today, I am going to talk about two themes: a brief introduction of ChinaÆs economic development, including ChinaÆs energy strategy; the good bilateral relations between China and New Zealand, its potential for further development and its relevance to our cooperation in the field of minerals and energy.   It is a well-known story that over the past 27 years, great changes have taken place in China. In 1978 when ChinaÆs reform and opening up just started, its gdp was near to only 150 billion usd dollars. By the year of 2004 it reached to 1.6 trillion usd, an average of yearly growth rate 9.4 per cent.   ChinaÆs great achievements are widely appreciated both in China and abroad. ChinaÆs development has not only improved the living standard of its own people, but also produced a huge market and brought about great opportunities for the world. Since ChinaÆs entry into WTO in 2001, China has imported near to 1.8 trillion usd dollars of goods, averaging a yearly imports of 500 billion usd dollars, creating for other countries and regions more than ten million jobs.   Our prediction is that in the next five years, ChinaÆs imports will be well over three trillion usd dollars. China will continue to serve as one of the leading growth engines for the future world economic development. Now China is on its great strive to achieve the goals of improving living standard for all the Chinese people. We are trying to reach a quadruple gdp of 2000 by the year of 2020, namely to reach gdp four trillion usd, a gdp per capita 3000 usd dollars.

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. Akita Zinc Refinery of Mitsubishi Metal Corporation (MMC) started operation in 1953 with a capacity of 560 tons of electrolytic zinc per month. Its capacity has been expanded gradually and reached 8,100 tons per month in 1973. However, present production level is about 6,500 tons per month due to the depressed zinc market. In 1963, newly developed sulphate roasting was incorporated for residue treatment. Since 1973, electric power from Ohnuma geothermal power station of MMC has been supplied in addition to hydroelectric power from Komata power station of MMC. At present, about 40% of power is supplied from our company's power station and the rest is from the power company. Recent customers' demands for zinc prod- ucts include various kinds of shape, weight and chemical composition of galvanizing zinc alloy. It is necessary for zinc producer not only to meet the requirements of customers but also to enhance the value of zinc product in order to expand the market of zinc.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

This research is about human development and socio-economic progress of the main mining areas of Chile in the period 1990 - 2007, and especially about the positive effects that mining activity has on poverty reduction and indicators related to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The analysis is doubly interesting, if one considers that the economic and social developments in Chile, recognised and prominent among the Latin American economies and developing nations, are more evident in mining areas as Tarapacß and Antofagasta (northern Chile), which concentrated than more 70 per cent of investments and mining assets in the country. Additionally, the study concludes with methodological reflections for the evaluation of socio-economic impact in the mining industry in developing countries.

Traditionally occupational health and safety (OH&S) has been managed for the direct benefits of reducing injury and illness to workers on mine sites. In the current skill shortage climate it is important to recognise the value that OH&S management can have in assisting mines in minimising their exposure to this issue. In times of skills shortage turnover is high as mines poach personnel from each other. This leads to loss of corporate knowledge and loss in productivity through the need to train new personnel in mine-specific operating procedures. In addition absenteeism can significantly disrupt production as there may be no ready replacements available for key jobs. Pressure will be placed upon workers to remain at work even though they are not completely fit for work, leading to presenteeism and consequently loss in productivity. In addition to the threats to routine operation, the loss of management and professional staff can significantly increase catastrophic risk through loss of experience and corporate knowledge. There is increased pressure to focus on events that occur regularly in the here and the now and underestimate the rare, or unlikely, events.The theme of this paper is that by properly addressing OH&S management at mine sites, companies can minimise their exposure to these problems. Put simplistically, a safe and healthy mine is a sustainable and productive mine. Case studies and relevant literature will be used to support this premise.CITATION:Cliff, D and Bailey, K, 2012. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled stopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench stope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in bench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also described.

Middle and Late Cenozoic fluvial conglomerates and gravel in northeastern Southland record the transport of alluvial gold from Central Otago into Southland, and subsequent reworking and concentration of this gold into economic placer deposits. A corridor of geochemically distinctive, Hg-free gold derived ultimately from veins in Torlesse Terrane schist in Otago extends through the Caples Terrane and into Southland. The initial repository in Southland was fluvial sediment of the East Southland Group, specifically weakly auriferous, quartzose delta plain strata of the Gore Lignite Measures (GLM), a downstream equivalent of Dunstan Formation in Central Otago. Miocene uplift along the northwest trending Old Man Range beheaded the parent river system, isolating GLM from its Central Otago source area and establishing the proto-Waikaia River system. Rising topography between Otago and Southland increased fluvial gradients, and initiated erosion of cover strata and a sequence of tectonically induced gold recycling events. Auriferous GLM were recycled from the hinterland into broad braided fluvial channel and floodplain deposits of the Waikaia Group (new), specifically the highly auriferous Waikaka Quartz Gravels and equivalent Waimumu Quartz Gravels downstream (WQG), superimposing more proximal depositional environments over parts of the former GLM delta plain. WQG were deformed, and locally cannibalised during the later stages of their deposition by reverse movement on north-northeast trending faults of the Dunsdale System (NW side up). Increased tempo of uplift in the hinterland (Old Man, Garvie, Umbrella, and Blue Mountain Ranges) in the Pliocene and early Quaternary resulted in further reworking of GLM and WkQG from the hinterland as well as basement erosion. Progressively more basement-rich detritus was deposited as a locally auriferous piedmont (Gore Piedmont Gravels - GPG) over earlier channel and delta plain (GLM, WQG) strata, extending from the Blue Mountains to Waikaia, and southward through the Gore Gap to beyond Mataura. Southward propagation of the north-northeast trending ranges, local warping, and uplift of the Murihiku Terrane in Pliocene and Quaternary progressively deflected GPG fluvial systems and ultimately constrained them to the present valleys. Pre-existing auriferous strata (GLM, WQG, GPG) were reworked and deposited with or without basement detritus as these fluvial systems migrated toward their present positions. Auriferous remnants of these transitional deposits are preserved in local structural depressions on the uplifted blocks that deflected the systems (eg King Solomon Mine), and on locally abandoned floodplain segments on the lowlands (Pebbly Hills-Gore Gap). The present drainage has continued to incise and cannibalise its own and earlier deposits during late Pleistocene-Recent uplift to form confined channel placers within the present valleys.

The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

In the pyrometallurgical process of secondary lead recycling, a desulfurising agent, such as Na2CO3 is added to minimise the emissions of sulfur into the atmosphere, while silica is introduced into the smelter as a fluxing material. Subsequently, a significant amount of Na2O and SiO2 remains in the downstream reverberatory furnace and blast furnace slags. However, there is limited understanding of the thermodynamic behaviour of silicate-based lead slags rich in Na2O, posing challenges in accurately determining the optimal condition for targeted metal recovery and final slag composition. In this work, the equilibrium phase relations of the PbO-Na2O-SiO2 system in the primary phase field of Na2SiO3 are studied from 800 to 1000°C via equilibration-quenching method. Samples with different compositions were prepared and held in platinum capsules in air at these temperatures to reach equilibrium. The equilibrated samples were subsequently quenched and the phase compositions were measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results were then compared to those of previous studies and any discrepancies were resolved.

In most instances, the application of high-chrome grinding media results in an increase in the recovery of the valuable mineral(s). The authors have published data from a number of plant-based case studies, which indicate that it is not unreasonable to expect a recovery increase in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.0 per cent for a copper ore. It is of interest to understand where the increase in recovery is coming from. That is, is the additional copper recovery the result of improved fine particle flotation or is it due to an improvement across all size fractions?This paper aims to answer this question. Laboratory flotation tests were completed using forged steel and a high-chrome alloy on a volcanogenic massive sulfide copper ore. The unsized data indicated that the application of high-chrome grinding media to this ore resulted in an improvement in both copper recovery and copper concentrate grade. A detailed kinetic analysis of both the copper sulfide and gangue minerals was completed that clearly shows that the change to a more inert grinding media produced significant increases in the flotation rate constants (both fast and slow) across all size fractions. It is also possible to observe that the change in pulp chemistry has resulted in a decrease in the flotation kinetics of the -20 micron pyrite, while the coarse pyrite recoveries have increased, presumably because of an increase in the flotation of the chalcopyrite/pyrite composite particles.CITATION:Greet, C J, Jacques, S and Kinal, J, 2014. A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The dynamic behaviour of the load in a pilot-scale ball mill has been measured as a function of axial position within the mill, end plate lifter design, load volume J (percent of mill volume), percent solids in the slurry S and mill speed N (percent of critical speed). Conductivity probes were inserted through the shell of the mill to provide online measurements of the dynamic orientation of the load in the mill. It was found that 1. the height of the shoulder of the load is increased by increasing J, S or N. 2. Measurements of the effect of S on the location of the shoulder of the load should be very useful in mill control strategies. 3. The axial centre of gravity of the load in the mill is not affected by operating conditions. 4. The presence of lifters on the feed end plate does not affect the torque drawn by the mill. 5. Holdup of slurry in the mill is a strong function of slurry viscosity and a weak function of mill speed.
