Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.

The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities. Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. The most important textural characteristic that relates to high grade mineralisation appears to be the low proportion of mafic minerals, because the quartz monzonite porphyry intrusions hosting most of the mineralisation in the two deposits studied contain

Removal of Arsenic in Fluorite Ore by Simultaneous Grinding-Leaching with NaHS Generally speaking, a high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride (HF), which is essential for the semiconductor manufacturing. With the continuous depletion of resources, novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ores are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, a low-grade fluorite ore was upgraded by removing arsenic, which is difficult to remove by conventional method. The mechano-chemical leaching of fluorite ore (i.e. the sample was ground in presence of NaHS, using a beads mill) was carried out to investigate the removal of arsenic from the low-grade fluorite. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced to 73.2 mg/kg.

In addition to the geologic risk of a particular project, the criteria that an international exploration company (æIECÆ) utilises when making an investment decision in a particular country should also include a critical analysis of the political, judicial and fiscal regime of the host country. A key investment criteria of an IEC is mineral tenure and the security and continuity of that mineral tenure under the host countryÆs existing legal system as well as the host countryÆs overall legal, political and fiscal framework, the latter of which can affect the projectÆs overall economic viability in a number of ways. The authors, Steve Vaughan and Michael Bourassa of Aird & Berlis, Toronto, Canada, have taken the position that developing an understanding of a countryÆs legal tradition is a crucial first step in analysing the mineral regulatory regime of a particular country. This paper continues their efforts to overview the most recent legal trends affecting the worldÆs mineral industry and attempts to analyse, categorise, compare and contrast differing legal systems, cultural backgrounds and economic philosophies relating to the development of mineral rights in Pacrim countries and the resulting commercial, legal, and political framework which ultimately drives the relevant mineral legislation. For the convenience of organisation of this analysis, the authors have divided the Pacrim countries into four smaller groups, firstly, on the basis of their legal tradition and, secondly, by their geographic location:Common Law Countries: USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; Spanish Civil Code Countries: Mexico, Central America (Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala), South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia). Communist or Former Communist Countries: Mongolia, China, Russia. Countries of the Pacific Southwest: Phillippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand), Papua New Guinea. The discussion starts with an analysis of the various types of legal regimes, attempts to classify or categorise them, reiterates the necessity for the rule of law and those factors which encourage mineral exploration and development and discusses and recommends the expansion of a practical country competitiveness rating system developed by the Fraser Institute. In addition to the fundamental issue of mineral tenure û what it is and how secure it is û the paper discusses how different legal systems have shaped different approaches taken by individual nations to attract foreign mineral investment. The paper analyses the best practices and experiences accumulated in different Pacrim countries with varying legal traditions and identifies a practical country competitiveness rating system which the authors believe should be expanded to cover all minerally endowed countries. This rating system will permit countries to identify their mineral regime weaknesses and adjust their legal systems to better attract mineral investment and will also permit exploration and mining companies to compare their jurisdictional choices with those selected by their competitors.

The placer mining industry of the West Coast region of the South Island is based largely around the production of alluvial gold, although other valuable minerals are also present. Since the first major discoveries in 1864-65, reported gold production has totalled around 264 t (8.5 Moz). During the past 10 years, annual production has totalled around 1460 kg (47,000 oz). It is anticipated that gold production over the next three years will continue at a level of 1400-1800 kg.   Annual gold production peaked during 1866 at approximately 17,170 kg (550,000 oz) and has not exceeded 100,000 oz since 1885. This reflects the ease with which gold was won from shallow, rich deposits that were present at many localities. Subsequently, there has been a general decline in the availability of this type of deposit, a trend that will continue in the future. This paper outlines the present state of placer mining in the West Coast region, gives some historical background to the industry and briefly predicts future trends.

The Southern Mines Rescue Station (S.M.R.S.) has been established for 55 years and in the past 15 years has had only 4 major call-outs. Whilst the mines rescue training program has continued to expand, the Station has become involved in other work which includes mine worker training and limited research. Notwithstanding, the prime role of the Mines Rescue Station has not been overlooked and the Station has only advanced with the many changes that have occurred in the coal industry. The Rescue Station activities are financed by contributions from Colliery proprietors and the aim of the S.M.R.S. Committee is to provide a service in which colliery management and mine workers will have a high degree of confidence.

Mineral resources all over the world are often heterogeneous and have variable ore properties and ore grade. As a result the ore processed in concentrating plants varies over the life of mines. Consequently the circuits often suffer from bottlenecks typically at the stages of crushing, semi-autogeneous (SAG) and ball milling. Bottlenecks may be remedied with equipment retrofits, however, design engineers should consider a phased approach to the circuit design that delays initial capital expenditure over the life-of-mine. This paper deals with the debottlenecking of existing mineral processing plants by means of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) applications. It also deals with the use of innovative flow sheet designs using HPGRs for the design of Greenfield plants by engineering or mining companies. In the case of Greenfield plant design an analysis with respect to energy efficiency and operating cost (OPEX) is presented. The analysis compares the performance of SAG based circuits against HPGR circuits that may be influenced by variable ore properties. Globally about 600 HPGRs are installed in various applications in the cement and minerals industries. In excess of 100 of these HPGRs are used since the mid 1980s for crushing and grinding of various ore types including æhard rockÆ applications. HPGR technology is mature enough to be considered as an ideal debottlenecking device. HPGRÆs are versatile, they have a low installation footprint and they are flexible in its machine settings (pressure, roll speed), which can be adjusted to react to ore variations whilst maintaining a high throughput. Examples for the benefits of using HPGR in terms of energy efficiency and operating costs are presented by this paper. æEco-efficientÆ flow sheets and sustainable development initiatives are linked to energy savings as an æenergy costÆ and benefit to the environment. Energy savingsÆ can also be analysed in terms of the ædollar costÆ (OPEX) savings. This paper demonstrates that HPGR is more energy efficient and may reduce the overall grinding energy requirements in the order of 16 per cent depending on the target grind size and ore properties. The HPGR is more cost efficient and may reduce overall grinding costs by as much as 19.3 per cent depending on the cost of energy, grinding media and the rate of grinding media wear in the comminution circuit.

The Callie Underground Mine is located in the Tanami Desert 560 km Northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and is currently operated by Newmont Australia Limited with all mining activities carried out by Henry Walker Eltin. Callie was discovered in the region in 1991 with the box cut portal commenced south of the pit in 1995 and underground ore production commenced in 1998, after completion of the profitable Callie Open Pit. Development is currently occurring at depths of over 700 m with the decline currently below the 640 Reduced Level (RL) level (surface RL of 1400) with production haulage from 600 m below the surface. The combination of auto compression, a moderate geothermal gradient of 2¦C/100 m and diesel heat transfer causes the wet bulb temperature of intake air at the bottom of the mine to be typically 5¦C higher than on the surface. Wet Bulb temperatures can be up 5¦C higher again in active areas under secondary ventilation. During the 2002/2003 wet season many activities in the lower levels of the mine were stopped due to miners experiencing adverse heat related symptoms or the temperatures exceeding the Underground Heat Management Procedure stop job criteria of 32¦C wet bulb. To improve the working environment, combat the heat related illness and improve operational efficiency, a temporary 1.8 MW refrigerated cooling plant consisting of three 600 kW modules were installed underground to provide bulk air cooling for the lower levels of the mine during the 2003/2004 wet season. Several studies have been conducted in relation to future ventilation demands at Callie and all came to the conclusion, that some mine cooling will be necessary for Callie to meet the high production and development demands. This paper will describe the ventilation network at the Callie Underground operation focusing on the installation, operation and effectiveness of the temporary underground refrigeration plant.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

Project delivery strategies are determined by project context, business case requirements, scale of project, market conditions, ownerÆs capability and preference, contractorÆs experience, resource and skill availability, project location and type of project or facility.Successful project management requires the setting of coherent, effective and realistic business objectives and success criteria. The management team needs to lead, prioritise, resource, align, plan, track and communicate the processes that enable the realisation of these business objectives and success criteria.For any given project there is a unique balance between selection of a simple project delivery strategy that minimises interfaces and a complex strategy that necessarily engages the use of expertise and experience from numerous parties. The right balance for a project between these "book-end cases" is a function of how the project owner or managing contractor defines its objectives and chooses to manage risk, cost, schedule and project quality, in the context of the conditions affecting the project.Selection of an effective project delivery strategy requires a detailed appreciation of the range of external and internal environmental / shaping factors which influence the project. These factors include the project constraints imposed by the business, market or operational environments and the selection of an effective mix of primary (head contract), secondary (mix of vertical and horizontal packages) and tertiary (type of individual contract) strategies. The selection of the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies also shapes the project, the size and responsibilities of the ownerÆs team and the framework for delivery of outcomes.How does an owner or prime contractor decide? What is the optimum for a given project? Those with operations management backgrounds will have different views to those with project and construction management backgrounds.Is the simplest practical approach the best approach? Each and every interface needs to be managed.The owner will want a very experienced team that is engaged directly with the owner. The team will have a track record of successfully performing projects using contractors skilled in their respective disciplines and selected using competitive tendering on brilliantly designed scopes of work and good contract terms, with a fully defined project scope and appropriate schedule, for which all significant risks have been addressed and no scope changes are outstanding. Budget and schedule will be expected to have been developed with a full understanding of the scope, situation, risk management requirements etc.The problem is that these conditions rarely exist. The challenge in selection of a project delivery strategy is to resolve how best to address the inadequacies between the ideal case and the present reality. Mining deep orebodies is increasingly becoming the norm as the ‘easy’ orebodies are depleted. Deep ore mining requires significant ventilation and cooling infrastructure to not only meet regulatory requirements for air quality but also to achieve acceptable workplace temperatures with the higher strata rock temperatures and increased auto-compression. At the same time, advances in battery equipment technology are turning the possibility of a battery powered fleet into reality. The switch from a diesel fleet to a battery powered fleet offers several positive opportunities for the design and operation of a deep mine.The potential to reduce ventilation and cooling requirements due to battery powered equipment results in significant cost savings for mine development and infrastructure. Battery powered fleets are not subject to the same dilution requirements associated with diesel fleets thus allowing lower ventilation rates. At the low ventilation volumes possible with a battery powered fleet, surface refrigeration plants are limited with respect to the amount of cooling that can be delivered to the workface. Considerations for calculating the optimum air flow and cooling requirements are presented. Considerations for locating the refrigeration plant are also discussed. There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

In situ synchrotron X-ray and in situ neutron diffraction-based experimentation have been implemented to characterise the formation of the complex calcium ferrite iron ore sinter bonding phases silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I. Experiments were carried out using fine-grained (<20 ¦m) sinter mixtures containing ~77 wt per cent Fe2O3, 14 wt per cent CaO, 3.5 wt per cent SiO2 and 5 wt per cent Al2O3, with diffraction data collected during heating until 1300 - 1350¦C, which was enough to ensure complete melting of the SFCA phases. In the case of the in situ synchrotron experimentation, results showed that altering the nature of the starting sinter mixture (ie substitution of goethite for hematite; substitution of an amorphous Al2O3-based mineral for gibbsite) did not have a significant effect on the thermal stability range of the SFCA phases. It did, however, have a profound effect on the formation and rate of consumption of the calcium-rich ferrite phases C2F and CF, and on the formation mechanisms of SFCA and SFCA-I.
