Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

BORN a Chicagoan, on Aug;. 31, I879. Oscar Johnson lived in that city until young manhood. As a youth delivering newspapers he set his sight on the l university of Chicago and at sixteen years of age he began working summer vacations in the foundry of the Pullman Company. Misfortune came to his family during the summer of 1898 when tuberculosis took his only sister and brother. His mother, apprehensive of Oscar's health, urged him to try the West at least for awhile. So late summer found Oscar in Salt Lake City, employed by the Trent Engineering & Machinery Co. At that time it was busy building equipment for use in the war with Spain. Though he did not know it then, Oscar war was laying the groundwork for his present membership on the Mining Equipment Industry Advisory Committee of the W.P.B., a post which keeps him commuting between Denver and Washington.

THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I), It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the I5 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Let us take first the case of the mine-design type of course, having to do with layout of underground workings. Here it would seem that logical

Quantitative texture determinations were made for rolled and for rolled and annealed strips of 3, 6, and 10 pct Zn brasses. The main components of the rolling texture gradually shift over a wide composition range from the orientation characteristic of copper to that of 70-30 brass. At least the main features of the corresponding gradual changes in the annealing texture may be accounted for qualitatively on the basis of the oriented growth theory of annealing textures. All the oriented nucleation-type theories are notably less successful in accounting for the observed textures. EARLIER investigations by von Goeler and Sachs,' Dahl and Pawlek,' and Brick, Martin, and Angier" suggested that the annealing texture of copper is more sensitive to the addition of solute elements than the rolling texture. It was reported3 that the cube texture changes over into a brass-type recrys-tallization texture on addition of about 1 pct Zn, while the deformation texture changes only at about 5 pct Zn. Such behavior would be difficult to reconcile with any theory of annealing texture formation that relates the annealing texture to the deformation texture. In particular, the oriented growth theory of the cube texture" is based on a certain orientation relationship between the cube texture and the main components of the deformation texture which could not be reconciled with the reported behavior of low brasses. It was, therefore, of interest to re-examine these textures by means of the quantitative methods now available. The deformation and annealing textures of rolled a brasses with approximately 3, 6, and 10 pct Zn have been determined in terms of (111) and (200) pole figures. Experimental Methods The chemical analyses of the Cu-Zn alloys of commercial purity used in the present work are given in Table I. Chill-cast bars of the tabulated compositions were rolled and annealed according to the following schedule: I—rolling from 1.2 to 1.02 in. thickness, 15 pct reduction area, annealing 15 min at 450°C; 2— rolling from 1.02 to 0.867 in. thickness, 15 pct reduction area, annealing 15 min at 450°C; 3—rolling from 0.867 to 0.600 in. thickness, 31 pct reduction area, annealing 2 hr at 540°C; 4—rolling from 0.600 to 0.400 in. thickness, 33 pct reduction area, annealing 2 hr at 480°C. In the final straight rolling of 96.25 pct reduction area, the strips were reversed end to end after each pass. The final annealing temperature was determined for each alloy by annealing specimens of the cold-rolled strips in salt bath for 5 min at varying temperatures. The results of the hardness measurements are given in Fig. 1, where the final annealing temperature used for each alloy in determining the annealing texture is indicated by a cross.

OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They themselves ore the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely a frame which helps to support the refractories; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories with very little supporting structure. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a refractory- protected rod. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory-lined tun-dish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a non-conducting "hot top." These materials, from ladle to hot top inclusive, are often referred to as the "pouring-pit refractories." CAUSES OF FAILURE Compared with the equipment used in most industrial processes the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. The discussion here of the individual refractory materials will therefore keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance: 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. A dynamic regional coal development model is constructed for the Eastern Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Using this model, alternative development schedules from a recent environmental impact statement submitted to the Department of the Interior are simulated (Ref. 1). These alternatives include different mixes of export capacity, different coal conversion techniques within the region, as well as various levels of coal production. Exportation of 70 to 80 percent of an ultimate coal production of 180 million tons (163.3 x l09 kg) per year and the careful phasing of additional public services with population growth effectively reduce the social and environmental impacts of coal development. The alternative involving the addition of 43,000 megawatts of electrical generation capacity has very significant adverse social and environmental impacts on the region.

Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Table 1 pictures the waning output.

IT is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranular corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels have been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigators.4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a. mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measurements, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a mandrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A-10 11 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be clamped onto a sample or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8-in. diameter. The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5

DURING the war the mineral industry, and metal mining in particular, extended itself more than any other to attain the limit of its productive capacity. Likewise, probably no other industry went quite so far toward jeop¬ardizing its own economic future through depletion of material reserves. Once we looked to Europe for most of the manufactured goods we needed. Our own limited mineral requirements were easily supplied from mines near the Eastern seaboard. With expansion and industrialization, our mineral needs increased in proportion, and the centers of mining activity moved westward to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Tri-State district, where seemingly inexhaustible high-grade deposits of iron, copper, lead, and zinc ores were opened and rapidly developed.

The ß and a ß transformations in plutonium were studied with particular emphasis on the transformation kinetics and microstructure. Significant observations are: 1) The kinetic data show conclusively that the ß — a transformation in high-purity plutonium can proceed isothermally with no athermal component. 2) Plastic deformation of the stable (3 phase retards the subsequent (3 — a transformation. 3) Plastic deformation of the stable a phase accelerates the a — ß transformation; the acceleration is attributed only to residual stresses. 4) The a and a?a volume changes occur anisotroPically in textured plutonium. 5) An apparent crystallogvaphic relationship exists between the parent and the product phases of the and (3 — a transformations. 6) Both applied uniaxial compressive stresses and uniaxial tensile stresses raise the starting temperature for the ß — a transformation. 7) A given uniaxial tensile stress favors the a — ß transformation more than an equivalent applied uniaxial compressive stress opposes the transformation. These observations of the (ß —a and a — ß phase changes in plutonium are consistent with known mar-tensitic transformations. ThIS paper elucidates some of the characteristics of the a— ß and ß —a transformations in plutonium. Because considerable conjecture exists about the mechanisms by which the phase transformations occur in plutonium, experiments have been performed to provide indirect information concerning the mechanisms responsible for the a —ß and ß -a transformations. Indirect information is of particular value in the study of plutonium because of the experimental difficulties presented by the metal. Single crystals have not been produced in any of the allotropes. The large density results in high X-ray and electron-absorption factors and consequently complicating X-ray and electron diffraction. The kinetics of ß — a and a — ß transformations of plutonium and the behavior of the transformations under a variety of conditions have been investigated in detail. Information about the mechanisms of the allo-tropic transformations of plutonium was obtained indirectly from three sources: 1) the effect of plastic deformation of the stable parent phase upon the transformation kinetics; 2) the behavior of the metal transforming under applied stresses; and 3) the microstruc-tural and crystallographic features between parent and product phases. PHASE-TRANSFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS In characterizing solid-state phase transformations in metals and alloys, it is useful to define several types of transformations. An aim of the present work was to identify the low-temperature transformations in plutonium by type, i.e., as martensitic or nonmar-tensitic. Practical definitions for these terms follow. The terms commonly used to categorize phase transformations lack universally accepted definitions. This confusion arises doubtlessly because some terms specify crystallographic or morphological character while other words have a kinetic or a thermodynamic connotation. For example, martensitic specifies certain definite crystallographic restrictions. Unfortunately, martensitic is sometimes used in an ill-defined way to imply kinetic characteristics. Further confusion attends the use of such expressions as nucleation and growth, diffusional, and massive. From time to time new systems of phase-transformation nomenclature are suggested; unfortunately none of these has gained general acceptance.1,2 The authors of the present paper have no intention of entering the controversy. We recognize that some readers may object to the nomencliture used here. For exampie, the terms military and civilian have recently been used in much the same way as martensitic and non-martensitic are used in this paper. This paper is intended to describe several specific details of the low-temperature phase transformations in plutonium. The authors have found it useful to identify these transformations as martensitic; the term was chosen as the best available to describe the experimentally observed features of the transformations studied. A martensitic transformation is one that occurs by the cooperative movement of many atoms; the rearrangement of atoms from parent to product crystal structure occurs by the passage of a mobile semico-herent growth interface. The geometric features characteristic of a martensitic transformation are a specific orientation relationship between the product and parent phase lattices, a specific habit-plane orientation for the growth interface, and a shape change with a specifically oriented shear component. There is no alloy partition between the parent and product phases in a martensitic transformation. Martensitic transformations may display either athermal kinetic behavior or thermally activated isothermal kinetic behavior. Some martensitic transformations occur isothermally, although more commonly martensitic transformations are athermal. Isothermal martensitic transformations are suppressible by rapid cooling. In athermal martensitic transformations, nucleation and growth are not thermally activated and the transformations are essentially time-independent. Investigators in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial temperatures; i. e., 1000 to 1800 C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree. New Thermoelectric Materials A thorough survey of the literature on thermoelectricity revealed that present-day thermocouples could not meet the specifications mentioned above because their thermoelements are metallic. Metals have a marked tendency to deteriorate chemically and their melting points limit their use to low temperatures. Refractory substances, however, are usually resistant to chemical attack and are quite stable at high temperatures. Hence a survey of refractory substances having thermoelectric possibilities was made. One class of thermocouples considered was that in which carbon and a carbide of some metal or nonmetal were the thermoelements. Previous investigators neglected to study this field but certain recommendations were made by them for the use of couples in which carbon served as one element. These proposals are listed in Table 1. The couples suggested are unsatisfactory because of their low thermoelectric powers, the low melting points of their metallic elements, etc. The

WITH the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45° to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections. The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the earing behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass. EARING BEHAVIOR OF BRASS Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (113)[112]. This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;* Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photograms for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. The most generally accepted equilibrium diagram for A1-Fe alloys has a eutectic system on the aluminum side with an essentially insoluble constituent of the formula, FeAl,, as the second phase. In 1938, Bradley and Taylor1 did report a phase change of FeAl,, but this change has never been confirmed. According to them, FeA1, is the stable phase only at higher temperatures; at lower temperatures, it is converted into Fe2Al7 and aluminum. It has now been found that there is, in fact, a phase change of the Al-Fe constituent on the aluminum side of the equilibrium diagram. This change, however, is not the one reported by Bradley and Taylor. The alloys used were cast by continuous processes and had these analyses: Fe - 1.98 to 2.02 pct, Cu-0.01 pct, Si - 0.01 pct, Mn - 0.01 pct, Mg - 0.00 pct, Zn - 0.00 to 0.01 pct, Cr - 0.00 pet, Ti - 0.00 to 0.04 pct. The constituent in these alloys was identified by X-ray analysis with a Guinier camera and by chemical and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. Two procedures were used to separate constituent for the last two analyses. In one procedure, it was separated by treating a sample with a solution of methanol saturated with iodine. And in the other procedure, it was separated by first applying, at 12 amp per sq ft in 15 pct sulfuric acid at 70°F, an oxide coating to a sample, and then dissolving this coating in a solution of 35 ml of 85 pct H3PO4 and 20 g of CrO3 per liter. Several observations directed attention to a phase change of the A1-Fe constituent. Differences that appeared too great to be accounted for by micro-structure alone were found in the voltages required to apply the same thickness of an oxide coating to products from rapidly and slowly chilled ingot. Even more striking was the difference in appearance of the coatings themselves. One applied to a product from a rapidly chilled ingot was dark gray in appearance, in fact, almost black, while one applied to a product from a slowly chilled ingot was essentially white. Also, even a short period of thermal treatment at an elevated temperature of products from rapidly chilled ingot led to the same anodizing behavior as that of products from slowly chilled in-

Introduction An oil-base mud is a rotary drilling fluid in which oil has been substituted for water as the principal liquid ingredient. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various Calilornia fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion on drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of vari- ables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these. variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omis. sions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here' and abroad.' Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.' When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000' to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect. Fine coal pulverization and highly turbulent combustion shorten the distance for fuel burnout, increase flame temperature, and speed up heat transfer. Rates of combustion of pulverized coal exceeding 200,000 Btu per cu ft per hr have been demonstrated in atmospheric gas-turbine combusters,

INTRODUCTION. THE crystalline belt of the Atlantic Seaboard, south of New York, attains its maximum breadth of 220 miles on the northern border of North Carolina; and in this State it is most widely characterized by the occurrence of gold in workable deposits. Half a dozen auriferous belts have been recognized by Nitze and Hanna.1 These are, in the main, coincident in position and trend with the NE.-SW. zones of metamorphic slates and schists, which, more than any other feature, give character to the geological map of North Carolina. The central gold-belts, accompanying the main zone of slates and associated igneous rocks, are much the more important and persistent, and may be regarded as continuous northward across Virginia and southward into South Carolina. Tile eastern belt, on the other band, is the shortest and, economically, one of the least important. Its extreme length does not exceed 25 miles, the narrow band of slaty rocks to which it belongs passing, both NE. and SW., beneath the coastal-plain formations. But, although limited in area and production, this belt is, perhaps, comparable with the central belts or any part of the sea-board crystallines in the variety of conditions under which the gold occurs. It lies chiefly in the NE. part of Franklin county and the NW. part of Nash county, on the watershed of Fishing creek and other tributaries of Tar river. The elevation is between 400 and 500 ft. ; and the Tertiary peneplain has here an exceptionally perfect development, the reliefs separating the slightly incised stream-courses consisting of broad, flat-topped peneplain remnants, bounded by gentle lateral slopes.
