A surprising development during the year was the continued high demand for petroleum products and the high level of crude oil charges to the stills. Generally speaking, the petroleum industry during 1946 succeeded in producing a greater quantity of crude oil and petroleum products than in any of the war years, and considerably exceeded the production of any prewar year. Daily crude still charges averaged between 4,700,000 and 4,800,000 bbl per day for 1946 and about equaled the 1945 record, although most pessimistic 1945 guesses, predictions, or fears ranged, for 1946, from only 3,900,000 to 4,400,000 bbl per day. In spite of the high crude charge to the stills, total stock of crude oil was higher at the end of the year by some 7,000,000 to 8,000,000 bbl. A similar story holds regarding stocks of the principal refined products. Gasoline on hand at year's end was two to three million barrels lower, and was considered low for the expected demand during the coming high consuming season, while stocks of light and heavy fuel oils, although some higher than a year previous, hardly reached a comfortable level. The trend in gasoline of high octane number, which has resulted in a marked rise in. the antiknock quality by the end of 1945 (five or six numbers higher than during the war and one number higher than the prewar quality of civilian motor gasoline of 1941) was abruptly arrested by an acute shortage of metallic lead for manufacturing tetraethyl lead. Government action in the form of lead price control, rationing, and the setting of octane ceiling specifications to conform to the reduced ethyl lead compound available were enforced until abrogated at the end of the year. It will be interesting to see how rapidly the octane levels will resume the rising trend, as more metallic lead slowly becomes available for making greater quantities of ethyl lead compound. As octane quality rises over present levels the disadvantage of the refiner without catalytic cracking equipment will increase. Gasoline made by catalytic cracking, without addition of ethyl lead, approximates 77 octane by the official ASTM Motor Method test, compared with 66 for gasoline generally similar in volatility made by the older thermal cracking operation. Catalytic gasoline shows an even greater improvement in the Research octane number, the comparison being roughly 86 Research versus 71 Research octane for the thermal cracked product. This higher differential in Research octane is credited by many, although not universally so, as contributing to better road performance, and consequently resulting in a more desirable product marketwise. In some parts of the country a premium of roughly one fourth cent per gallon is now being paid for gasoline with higher Research octane made possible by including catalytic cracked product in the final blends. (Washington Meeting, May, 1905.) SEVERAL years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions 1 a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in, 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe, Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present. paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapen¬ing the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned ?duck bill.? The difficulty of finding efficient coke-drawers, especially during the summer season, and in the South, is notorious. Yet, notwithstanding the great improvements that have been made in retort coke-ovens, new bee-hive ovens are continually constructed; and a machine which will successfully compete with hand-drawing, and, at the same time, add to the efficiency of the bee-hive oven, seems to deserve notice. The machine here described was put in operation at the Frick Coal and Coke Co.'s plant, known as Continental No. 1, at Uniontown, Pa., in October, 1904, and is reported to have met successfully all the tests to which it has been subjected. The gaseous reduction of dense iron ore is a topochemical process in which reduction takes place at distinct interfaces between solid phases or layers. Under normal conditions, these interfaces remain parallel to the exterior surface of the ore body as they move inward. Certain conditions, such as cracking, high porosity, impurities, entrapped residual oxides, may cause departures from normal topochemical behavior. THE gaseous reduction of dense iron ore proceeds at interfaces between several solid phases or layers.',' Under normal conditions, these interfaces progress inward and remain parallel to the exterior surface of the ore body. This topochemical behavior is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 which shows partially reduced specimens of natural and synthetic hematite. Using a coordinated sequence of macro, micro, and X-ray examinations, the authors1-'2 found that the number of interfaces and participating phases was in agreement with the Fe-0 system. Above 570°C, reduction of the ore involved a maximum of three common boundaries between four solid phases: iron, wiistite (Fe,O), magnetite (Fe,O,), and hematite (Fe,O,). Below 570°C, reduction proceeded through two interfaces between three phases: iron, magnetite (Fe,O,), and hematite (Fe,O,). The decrease in the number of phases below 570°C was due to the instability of wiistite below this temperature. The sequence of phases was also consistent with the equilibrium requirements. For example, the layers of iron oxides that were formed in topochemical fashion were always orientated in the order of increasing oxygen content. Thus, in Fig. 1 an outer layer of metallic iron is followed in turn by a thick intermediate band of black wiistite, by a thin layer of light magnetite, and finally by a relatively large core of hematite. This arrangement of the oxide layers was due to restrictions in reducing conditions which were imposed by the physical structure of the solid. The highly reducing gas on the outside of the particle gradually lost its reducing power as it penetrated into the specimen. On a macro scale, the layers of the various oxides appeared to be sharply defined and uniform in composition. Microexamination of the sections, however, revealed that the interfaces did possess measurable widths which varied with the porosity and chemical activity of the oxide phase undergoing reduction. For example, Fig. 2 shows three interfaces in a dense hematitic ore which was partially reduced at 850°C. At the iron-wiistite interface where the greatest porosity developed, the reaction proceeded over a zone 25 to 30 microns in width. Toward the interior, the interfaces became progressively narrower until at the magnetite-hematite boundary the reaction zone was about 1 micron wide. In this region the structure was exceedingly dense; the hematite possessing a porosity on the order of 3 pct. A careful micro study across polished layers of the various oxides revealed generally homogenous and single-phase structures. As reported in a previous paper,' the wiistite layer was characterized by an increase in oxygen content with depth of penetration. The topochemical behavior of reduction was studied in six types of ore of different origin, composition, and physical structure. In most cases, reduction proceeded at the boundaries of well defined layers or phases, and this behavior may be regarded as normal for most dense fine grained ores. Deviations from Ideal Topochemical Behavior A number of deviations from the normal topochemical behavior were noted. In these cases, the continuity of the reduction interfaces was disrupted in one of four ways: 1—Cracking of the specimen interrupted the geometric configuration, and the interfacial advance was no longer parallel to the exterior surface. 2—As a result of high porosity, the interfaces were spread over an appreciable distance and all but obliterated. 3—Impurities in the ore promoted a variety of deviations, including cracking. 4—A residual oxide phase was entrapped in the reaction product and left behind the advancing macro interface. Results from Cracking: A crack leading into the interior of an ore specimen presents a path of least resistance for the counter-flow of reducing gases and gaseous reduction products. Higher reducing conditions can be maintained along such cracks and reduction accordingly will propagate well ahead of the normally advancing reduction interfaces. Cracking was caused by a number of factors, one of which was the thermal spalling of impurities in the massive form. A more general type of cracking was due to reduction and was found in all dense varieties of natural and synthetic hematite, particularly in the temperature range of 500" to 700°C. The effect is shown clearly in Fig. 3. In this case, a dense sphere of pure hematite was partially reduced at 650°C for 100 min. The macrosection shows that one large reduction crack had penetrated the specimen and disrupted the normal topochemical advance of the interfaces. The outer layer of iron was only slightly affected but the thin dark layer of wiistite, adjacent to the ferrite, had widened perceptibly as it progressed along the crack. Farther inward, the magnetite layer was greatly disrupted and had penetrated irregularly to form islands of unaltered white hematite. A great deal of internal cracking is evident in the magnetite phase. From a practical point of view, the cracking of dense ores in the blast furnace could lead to desirable as well as undesirable effects. The general result

ON the Minnesota Ranges, 600 million tons of material have been moved in the past three years to produce 172 million tons of direct-shipping iron ore. Increasing wage rates and cost of equipment and supplies, coupled with the larger amount of waste material to be moved in comparison with the quantity of ore make it imperative that tile industry adopt all practices and methods which will enable it to move earth at progressively lower costs. Drilling. Prior to and during the war practically all blastholes drilled were 6-in. in diameter and put down by drills using strings of tools weighing from 2000 to 3000 lb. Present trends indicate that heavier drilling equipment making 9-in. holes wit11 3000 to 6000 lb tools will be more economical. Holes up to 12 in. diameter will be made with this equipment. Forging and hardening practices for bits to increase footage is receiving attention. One manufacturer expects to market 9-in. bits having sintered carbide inserts in the reaming and cutting edges. Oxygen and oil to burn holes in the rock are being tested for making blastholes at a considerably greater speed than can be obtained with a blasthole drill on the same size hole. To dale, however, the cost has been prohibitive.

Reservoir pressure is the pressure at which a fluid is held in a state of equilibrium in a porous stratum. This pressure may be a result of the genesis of oil or gas and its subsequent migration into and through an adjacent porous stratum, or of hydraulic head. Reservoir pressure is an indication of the potential energy contained in the reservoir, and when it is known the engineer is in a position to use it to advantage in recovering and lifting the oil. It is important to know the pressures in any type of reservoir, but this knowledge is probably of greater value in a limestone reservoir, as at Hobbs, where producing rates or conditions may be more sensitive to changes in pressures. The Hobbs field is in east central Lea County, New Mexico. The discovery well was completed by the Midwest Refining C I. in 1928, but intensive development did not begin until after the completion by the Humble Oil and Refining Co. of No. 1-A Bowers in February, 1930. There are 143 producing wells on approximately 5500 acres. The field has not been defined to the northwest, but a projection of structural contours indicates that the productive area ultimately may cover 7500 acres. The producing horizon is the White or Crystalline lime of Permian age. The top of the lime is found at an average depth of 4000 ft. and the wells penetrate it an average distance of 200 ft. The main pay zone is an oolitic stratum about 25 ft. below the top, and varies from 2 to 15 ft. in thickness. Other porous or cavernous strata are found lower in the lime but have little saturation. The initial production varied from 100 to 25,000 bbl. per day, depending perhaps to some extent on the structural location but chiefly on the porosity of the pay. The initial gas-oil ratio varied from 325 to 16,000 cu. ft. per barrel. In wells where the top of the White lime was found below 350 ft. below sea level (Fig. 1)) the gas-oil ratio was usually less than 1500 cu. ft. per barrel, while in wells higher than 350 ft. below sea level, the ratio was usually above 2000 cu. ft. per barrel. The water table has been determined at about 620 ft. below sea level, by three wells on the west side of the field. With few exceptions, the wells have been completed with 7-in. casing cemented

THE 6 phase of the Cu-Sn system (Cu,Sn, = 32.53 pct Sn) was considered to be stable down to room temperature until Owen and Iball showed by X-ray analysis that it undergoes a eutectoid decomposition into the a and e phases at a temperature near 300°C. Their findings have been confirmed by other investigators,2-5 a11 of whom used X-ray diffraction studies of powdered specimens. The transformation temperature has been reported by various authors as lying between 300" and 380°C. To our knowledge, no microscopic evidence of the eutectoid reaction has been published, as yet. It was in connection with other work that longtime annealings at 300°C were conducted with alloys containing 22, 32.6, and 35 pct Sn (nominal compositions) prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic tin and cast in a small iron mold. The specimens were first annealed at 700°C for 5½ hr and quenched from 400 °C after cooling to, and annealing at, that temperature for 9½ hr. After this treatment the sample with 22 pct Sn was cold worked for 15 pct reduction in thickness; the 32.6 and 35 pct alloys were too brittle to be cold worked. The final anneal at 300°C was done in a sealed pyrex glass bulb for 63 days. Fig. 1 represents the microstructure of the annealed alloy with 22 pct Sn. It shows primary a solid-solution crystals in a matrix of the (a + 8)-eutectoid formed at 520 °C. The a crystals contain 8 inclusions which precipitated from a due to the decrease in the solubility of tin in copper with fall in temperature. The decomposition of the 8 phase into a (light) and E (dark) can clearly be seen in some areas of the (a + 8)-eutectoid matrix. However, the decomposition is far from being completed, even after the long-time anneal used. Figs. 2 and 3 depict the microstructures of the annealed 32.6 pct alloy, which was intended to consist entirely of 6 phase. Due to some loss in copper on melting, the composition is slightly higher in tin. Accordingly, the sample after quenching from 400 "C consisted of grains of the 8 phase with the e phase arranged along the grain boundaries and as a Wid-manstatten precipitate within the 6 grains. After an annealing time of 63 days, the eutectoid decomposition, 6 + a + e, is still in its early, initial state. The pearlitic type of eutectoid is nucleated at the c crystals, preferably those surrounding the grain boundaries of the 8 phase. The appearance of the (a + €)-eutectoid in the 35 pct Sn alloy was very similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Again, the eutectoid decomposition nucleated at the 6 phase and proceeded from there into the 8 areas. As is evident from Fig. 2, the rate of decomposition of the 6 phase at 300°C is extremely sluggish: In the representative area shown only about 5 pct of the 8 phase has undergone the eutectoid trans- formation after annealing for 63 days. On the other hand, Owen and Williams2 have reported that X-ray photographs of powdered samples with between 17.5 and 34 pct Sn did not show 8 lines after annealing for only five to seven days at 300°C. This is in accordance with the fact that the rate of reaction in powdered samples is higher than in massive specimens, as a result of the excess free energy of the powder (due to its greater surface area). Geography: The Tagtepe district of the Vilayet of Eskigehir is about 20 miles northeast of the city of Eskigehir (approximately midway between Ankara and Istanbul) in western Anatolia. The area is a mountainous one, the highest peak being Tagtepe Mountain (5200 ft) which is approximately in the center of the district. The mountains drop off to the deep valley of the Sakarya River on the north and to the plain of Eskigehir on the south. For the most part, the watershed is on the northern side of the mountain barrier, draining into the Sakarya River, which in turn empties into the Black Sea midway between Zonguldak and the mouth of the Bosphorus. The approximate area covered by the Tagtepe district is shown in fig. 1. Transportation to shipping points is available via the Istanbul-Ankara railroad. The station on this line nearest the mining district is Alpikoy station, about 20 miles by road southwest of Tagtepe Mountain. Interior roads within the district are poor. Being of dirt, the winter rains and snows render them almost impassable for trucks from about the middle of December until the end of March, thus presenting a considerable transportation problem. However, the roads from the Bagoren and Tagtepe chromite mines to the railroad shipping point at Alpikoy station have recently been repaired and will be maintained for all-weather truck transportation. Detailed climatic data are not available. However, in general the spring, summer, and early autumn months are dry, and good weather may be expected from May until early November. Then the winter rains commence, and heavy snow is usual during January and February. Geology: The mountainous structure of Tagtepe belongs to basic rocks of serpentine (Variscan Orogeny) which is in contact with Paleozoic schists at west, and an Oligocene outcrop of red clays in Margi-Sepetci region (see fig. 1) at southeast. The northwest and southwest borders of Tagtepe district are, respectively, surrounded by Paleozoic schists and pebbly gray and yellow Neogene clays. More recent formations of alluviums overlay the plain of Eskigehir. Dark basic rocks of trachytes with hornblende are visible on Turkmenbaba Mountain, at the west of Tagtepe. Mineral Occurrences: Chromite: the most important mineral found in any quantity in the Tagtepe district. The alignment of the deposits of chromite is in general along the line Bagoren-Tagtepe (see fig. 1). The first mines in the area were those of Tagtepe and Bagoren, which were developed over 20 years ago with Swedish capital. Other deposits of chromite, more recently discovered and so far of less importance, are being worked at Kurucor, Komurcu, Gelinmezari, and Lacin (see fig. 1). Deposits average generally between 46 and 48 pct chromic oxide, with the exception of the Bagoren mine which averages 44 pct. However, a new lode, very recently plotted, in the Tagtepe mine averages 50 pct Cr,O,, 4.6 pct SOz, and 7 pct FeO. Geological character of the chromite occurrences in the Tagtepe mine may be considered typical of most chromite lodes in this area. The indications are that the formations of ore lenses are developed by the segregation of chromite crystals intruded into the serpentinized rock, and exposed later to tectonic movement within the zone of crystallization. All lenticular masses are more or less regular in shape and follow each other in southeast-northwest direction and dip generally 70" NE. Ore lenses do not seem to persist in depth, average depth of two lenses is 60 ft below surface. Three lodes .have been mined as open-pit. The average dimensions of individual lenses are as follows: pitch length, 100 ft; breadth, 27 ft; and width, 20 ft. The lenses and their enclosing rocks are broken by parallel fractures in approximately east-west direction. The grain shape of the carbide in nickel-bowled ad cobalt-bonded titanium carbides was studied by microgiaphic examination, and the influcence of sintering atmosphere, sintering substl-after, ami the amount of metal binder on the grain shape was determined. If was found that the Carbide grain cross sections in the nickel and cobalt cermets ranged from round to angular, depending on the sintering conditions. The spheroidization of the carbides in both cobalt-bonded and nickel-bonded titanium carbides may be attribicted to oxygen. In the course of studies on titanium-carbide base cermets, various investigators have reported on the shape of the carbide grains, and it was noticed that grain shapes were obtained which were either spheroids, or polygons with rounded or square edges. It was also noted that the shapes of the carbide grains changed with time or composition. skolnickl showed that the titanium-carbide grains. after infiltration in vacuum with nickel tended to spheroi- dize with time. The titanium-carbide skeleton was located on a beryllia plate during infiltration. Gur-land,' who studied the microstructure of titanium carbide-cobalt compacts, showed that the carbide grains are round after 1 hr at 1450oC in a hydrogen atmosphere and angular after 7 hr at the same temperature. Goetzel3 has found that the carbide grains in compacts with a high binder content. 40 to 60 pet. tend to be spheroidized. whereas Blumenthal and silverman4 pointed out that the higher binder contents could yield either round or rectangular grains with rounded edges. depending on the nature of the binder. The predominant orientation in both straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum is the {100} [110] texture. Upon complete recrystallization, this same texture predominates, but there is less spread about the ideal orientation. A secondary orientation about the [111] direction as the axis develops in cross-rolled sheet. Compression-rolled sheet exhibits random orientation in the plane of the sheet. Some mechanical properties were measured at varying angles to the rolling direction to determine the effect of preferred orientation on anisotropy in molybdenum sheet which had been straight, cross, or compression rolled. THE development of the arc-cast process has made available large ingots of molybdenum from which it is possible to roll sheet of considerable size. It is anticipated that such sheet will be further fabricated by spinning, drawing, stamping, or forming. Anisotropy of physical properties caused by the preferred orientation developed in the sheet during rolling may be expected to affect the behavior of the metal when subjected to these fabricating operations. To produce a sheet which will be most amenable to the fabrication of a given shape by a particular operation, consideration should be given to the directions and magnitudes of plastic deformations produced in the operation. When possible, the rolling schedule should be controlled to develop a texture which favors the required deformation. The existence of preferred orientations in rolled molybdenum sheet has been reported by Jeffries,' Konobejewsky,' Fujiwara," Goss,' and Ransley and Rooksby." None of these investigators obtained sufficient X-ray data to permit the construction of pole figures; instead, they based their conclusions upon Debye-Scherrer patterns of a limited number of positions. Ransley and Rooksby devoted some attention to transcrystalline cleavage at 45" to the rolling direction, indicating that it is appreciable in polycrystalline material only when the crystals are in the ideally preferred condition, and that this condition is only approached if the metal has been rolled successively in two perpendicular directions. In a recent paper, Custers and Riemersmao introduced the first pole figures to describe the textures of straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum sheet. To increase the knowledge concerning the generation and effects of preferred orientations in molybdenum sheet, an investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of variations in rolling schedule and annealing treatments on preferred orientation, and to correlate preferred orientations with some mechanical properties. The orientations of straight-rolled, cross-rolled, and compression-rolled sheet have been determined by X-ray analysis, both as-rolled and after recrystallization. Pole figures have been constructed to describe the textures produced by these various rolling procedures. Texture of Cast Molybdenum Ingots In the arc-cast process, molybdenum powder is pressed into a vertical column which is sintered to increase its strength as it proceeds downward into a water-cooled mold, where the metal is melted in an alternating-current arc established between the end of the formed powder electrode and the metal bath at the top of the growing ingot. Since the solid-liquid interface moves continuously upward in the mold, the crystal axes are not normal to the cold surface of the mold but have the curvature shown in Fig. la. X-ray analysis reveals that the cube axis is the fiber axis and that it is normal to the cold surface of the mold; that is, the [loo] direction is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ingot. Laboratory tests were made with pure minerals and actual reservoir rock samples to study the effects of hydrothermal (steam m hot water) treatments on reservoir rock properties. These tests showed that hydro-thermal treatment of many reservoir rocks can result in significant rock softening. The softening was attributed primarily to the partial destruction of dolomite and kaolinite and the synthesis of montmorillonite in the presence of excess silica. In many cases, the softening was great enough to cause considerable healing of propped fractures; therefore, a serious reduction in welt productivity could result. In other tests it was found that the addition of ammonia to a hydrothermal treating fluid in a concentration as low as 0.013 Ib/lb of water not only could prevent rock softening but could cause rock hardening. The results of X-ray diflraction analyses of rock samples showed that when ammonia was added to the treating fluid, ammonium-mica and analcite were formed instead of montmorillonite. No significant permeability damage was observed in the sandstones that were subjected to the ammonia-hydro-thermal environment; in some sandstones, permeabifity improvements resulted. INTRODUCTION As the use of steam or hot water becomes more prevalent in well stimulation methods. the need for information on the effects of such treatments on reservoir rock properties becomes increasingly apparent. Several works have been published on high-temperature changes in rock properties,',' but these are more applicable to in situ combustion operations than to steam or hot water injection processes. The mineralogical literature contains many publications which report on the changes occurring with various pure minerals in hydrothermal systems. A review of this literature denotes the ease with which entirely new, crystalline mineral phases can be synthesized from other minerals in hydrothermal environments at temperatures, pressures and residence times typical of those encountered in oilfield thermal recovery or stimulation processes. Discussions of many of these experiments are given by Deer et al. Grim,' Roy et al., Zen\ and Hawkins.' One of the most significant of these pure mineral studies is the hydrothermal synthesis work of Levinson and Vian" in which montmorillonite was synthesized from naturally occurring minerals; i.e., kaolinite, quartz and carbonate minerals (particularly dolomite). These reactions occurred at 575F in only 2 days and at 300F in 5 days. These results may be applicable to petroleum reservoir rocks since the minerals studied were those which are commonly found in sandstones. Furthermore, the environmental conditions imposed in the studies were very similar to those involved in thermal stimulation of petroleum reservoirs, e.g., steam or hot water injection. Other studies have suggested that weak rocks could be hardened by "electrochemical induration", a process in which an electric current is applied to a clay-containing rock body. These tests can be regarded as hydrothermal treatments since they were conducted in some instances with aqueous solutions and since clay temperatures during the electrical treatment reached a maximum of about 100C. Although a number of studies of the reaction of pure minerals have been reported, very little has been published on the reactions of petroleum rock-hydrothermal systems. No work has been reported on preventing the more detrimental rock changes in rock softening which might occur during the injection of steam or hot water into reservoirs. The studies described in this paper were conducted to provide such information. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The laboratory tests included studies of the effect of hydrothermal treatment on core samples from several different reservoirs. The hydrothermal treatments (simulated steam treatments) were conducted with distilled water at 575F, for the most part, for periods of 2 to 6 days. This temperature level was selected because it represented that temperature which would probably prevail in several cases under consideration for steam injection projects. The core samples, as well as the pure mineral samples, were contained in high-pressure stainless steel, autoclave-type pressure vessels. The effects of the hydrothermal treatments were evaluated by measuring the penetrometer hardness, formation rock embedment strength and permeabilities of the core samples before and after the treatments (Fig. 1)'" In addition, the mineralogical changes in the specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction. Concomitant with the core sample studies, the mineralogical changes were studied in greater detail by conducting hydrothermal synthesis experiments with pure minerals at similar temperature levels and residence times. THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. The art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates hack to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal developmcnt has taken place during the past 30 years. To Stephen R. Erom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contrib'ution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the mova, ble roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as, for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springe, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. It has remained, however, for the boldness and originality of Mr. Edison to extend the field of crushing-rolls in two new directions, and to cause them to ex-

In order to evaluate the quantitative determination of porosity by various neutron logging systems, four test wells were constructed to simulate some of the possible variab1e.r found in field logging conditions. All of the test holes contain sections of limestone with one section of sandstone included in one well. Each well has a representative section of high, medium, and low porosity. Three borehole sizes are represented by three of the test wells, all containing fresh water. One test well contains saturated brine. Statistical and tune constant checks are made for each system evaluated. Runs and repeat runs are made with the sonde centered and eccentric. Factors evaluated are the effect of borehole size, sonde position, salinity, chemical composition of rock, and statistical variation. A semi-quantitative method of evaluation of these effects is used giving the average maximum per cent error possible for each. Drift and calibration procedures are also discussed. The effect of the various factors appears to be largely a function of the phenomena detected as well as the means of detection. Graphic illustrations of some of these effects are presented. It is concluded, that for accurate log interpretation, the hole size and sonde position should be known. INTRODUCTION The use of neutron logs for the derivation of porosity has become an accepted practice in many areas. In recent years, many different neutron logging systems have been offered to the industry. The neutron sources presently available are of the radium-beryllium or polonium -beryllium type. Detector types used are ionization chambers, Geiger-Mueller-type counters, proportional counters, or scintillation detectors used to detect or measure gamma rays, thermal neutrons, epithermal neutrons, fast neutrons or combinations of these. It is well-known that all systems do not respond alike in all environments. As a result, testing facilities and an evaluation method were developed for use in evaluating the porosity discriminating ability of neutron logging systems using conditions simulating those normally encountered in the field. With such an evaluation, the suitability of a logging system can be determined lor selected field conditions. TEST FACILITIES The testing facilities consist of wells containing rocks of various porosities, constructed to include as many parameters as practicable. Three pits were drilled to a depth of 20 ft and the fourth to a depth of 9 ft, all having 48-in. diameters. Rat holes were dug to a depth of 6 ft in the center of each pit and fitted with sections of pipe having appropriate diameters. The top of this pipe was located approximately 8 in. above the pit bottom. A 6-in, layer of cement was then poured on the bottom and while still wet, 42-in. OD corrugated, galvanized culvert pipe was set on bottom and centered in place. This pipe extends approximately 1 ft above the surface of the ground. The annulus around the culvert pipe was then filled with cement to the top. A 1- or 2-in. layer of sand was placed on the cement bottom to provide an adjustable bed on which to place the series of rocks set in each hole. A cross section of a typical test well containing the porous rocks is shown in Fig. 1.

During the course of a study on the periodic precipitation (Liesegang phenomenon) of water vapor bubbles in solid silver, some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of these bubbles. Under certain conditions it was found that the bubbles which formed in the single crystals led to the formation of large blisters ad cracks, and when poly crystalline specimens were used grain boundary cracking was observed. These two phenomena were examined in some detail, and it was found that an important step in the formation of the blisters and grain boundary cracks was the impingement of neighboring bubbles. DURING the study of Liesegang precipitation in solid silver,' some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of water vapor bubbles. The bubbles were formed by annealing oxygen-saturated silver in hydrogen. Because of the similarity of this phenomenon to the hydrogen embrittlement of tough pitch copper,' it is known in the literature" as the hydrogen embrittlement of silver. In some respects it appears that the hydrogen embrittlement of silver is similar to the processes of hydrogen attack of steel5 and blister formation.' Hydrogen attack results from the high-temperature reaction of hydrogen with dissolved carbon or carbides in the steel to form methane (usually at grain boundaries). Blister formation occurs in steel and other materials as a result of hydrogen produced by corrosion, pickling, and so forth. Because of these similarities, some speculations were made concerning these other processes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Water vapor bubbles were formed in 99.999+, 99.99+, and 99.9 pct Ag by annealing in a partial pressure of oxygen (pq) until saturated and then in a partial pressure of hydrogen (pH,). The hydrogen diffuses into the silver and reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form water vapor which precipitates in the form of bubbles. The specimens were then sectioned, silver-plated, mounted in cold-setting plastic, ground and polished through a preliminary polishing, and finally chemically polished.' The bubbles were visible without etching.

Four counties in Indiana- LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland-have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or near high population areas and have no surface-mineable limestone deposits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Mineable seams suitable for aggregate are 120-150 m (400-500 ft) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 m (300 ft) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 m (2,000 ft) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.
