THE diamond drill is a very important tool in exploration and development testing and its use is increasing. In almost all cases results of diamond drilling are analyzed on the basis of grade and tons. A proper evaluation of core and sludge assays is important if drilling results are to be acceptable as a basis for geologic and engineering appraisal. The relatively wide variation in assay averages as calculated by various well-known combining methods indicates that the engineering choice of a method may affect the outcome of the drilling in terms of ore and waste. The problem of combining assay results from core and sludge samples has been discussed many times in conference and in the literature.'-' Most writers agree that the field of disagreement in methods is large and that the engineer on the job must consider features unique to his drilling, pick one of several combining methods, and depart from the rules when abnormal results come in. All the discussion to date can be summed up by the admission that as yet there is no fairly simple, generally acceptable combining method that is practicable over a wide range of drilling conditions, ground conditions, and ore occurrence. The combining problem is important in evaluating drilling results at Chuquicamata. Recently a reappraisal has been made of recovery variables and their effect on assays, with the result that a new combining method is offered which fits average drilling conditions and is mathematically reasonable. It is simple in application, fundamentally correct, and an improvement over most combining methods. At Chuquicamata diamond drillholes are used to outline the grade and position of blocks of normal and marginal grade oxide, mixed, and sulphide ore. Most holes penetrate all classes of material (and waste), and it is important for mining programs as well as ore reserves to know almost precisely the soluble and insoluble copper content of mineralized ground. At present three classes of ore are mined and treated differently. For an orderly sequence of mining operations which can provide regular daily tonnages of all three ore types and keep grade at certain levels with minimum variation, ore type and its grade must be predicted. Diamond drilling plus geologic mapping and bench sampling are tools for prediction. And drilling data are largely used to calculate grade of material more than a few meters away from bench faces. The orebody at Chuquicamata" is criss-crossed by millions of barren or mineralized weak to fairly strong slips and fault fissures. Mineralization is diverse and encompasses many quartz and oxide or sulphide-bearing copper veins, as well as seams and disseminated grains. Copper occurs in oxide or sulphide minerals or mixtures of these two mineral types. Rock conditions vary from intensely seri-citized (soft and porous) through clay-altered ground to almost fresh granodiorite. The result is an orebody which offers many obstacles to good and consistent core recovery in diamond drilling. Recovery varies considerably in the several alteration zones, the various types of oxide and sulphide ores, and the position and inclination of the drillhole within the complex fracture pattern. As core recovery drops sludge samples must be used with core samples to calculate grade. Many years of drilling at Chuquicamata indicate that in good grade oxide zones and in the sulphide areas core recovery is good and the ground uniformly mineralized. Moderate loss of core, therefore, does not markedly affect grade calculations based on core assays. An early core-sludge combining method used core assays at face value as indicating grade down to 50 pct core recovery, but below this recovery percentage sludge samples were used and weighted according to the standard Longyear chart. This method apparently did not introduce serious errors, but it abruptly used sludge assays with high weighting factors representing 100 pct return irrespective of actual percentage of sludge recovered. Recent drilling activities have been directed toward outlining the marginal ore areas. The non-uniform mineralization and generally poorer core recovery in such ground indicated that a more exact core-sludge combining method was required to equate wide differences between core and sludge assays and recovery. In fringe ore areas at Chuquicamata core recovery averages about 50 pct, from a minimum of 10 to 15 pct to a maximum of 100 pct. Sludge recovery is likewise variable and averages perhaps 80 pct even though holes are cemented as water return falls off. In a homogeneously mineralized area cut by many slips and faults, with hard and soft ribs, loss of core is loss of ground which has a grade similar to that of core recovered, and core assays approximate true grade. In this case sludge samples need not be used. However, it would be unusual to know beforehand that an area is uniformly mineralized, and in fact this condition is probably uncommon. This paper outlines a series of tests carried out during the first six months of 1927, in the laboratory and mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. The object of the tests was to determine whether the soluble salts present in the mill circuit water were having a detrimental cffect on the recovery made by flotation. To accomplish this object a series of water analyses were made, followed by flotation experiments in which definite quantities of the salts found were added as addition agents. Before proceeding to describe the results obtained in the course of the investigation, reference will be made to five articles that have appeared during the last two years in which the action of such salts is discussed. Two of these are by A. T. Tye1, 2 and describe flotation practice at Cananea and the way in which water high in ferrous and ferric salts is conditioned for differential flotation. Two, one by A. C. Munro and H. A. Pearse3 and the other by H. A. Pearse,4 outline Britannia milling methods, and the advantages that have been derived from ore washing; while in the fifth, A. W. Hahn5 summarizes the results of laboratory experiments in which ferrous, ferric and aluminum sulfates have been added in varying amounts. The mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. has a daily capacity of 3000 tons, and is situated about 75 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, on the Rio de Nacozari, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore treated is mined from the company's mine at Pilares, about 5 miles southeast of the Concentrator. The recent surge in demand for uranium in the US, accompanied by a significant increase in price, has stimulated the search for and development of lower grade ore bodies. At the mill, this translates into much larger throughputs and-compounded by many recently enacted environmental considerations-has made the cost of milling a critical factor in today's uranium production economics. The three conventional milling methods employed in the extraction of uranium ores are reviewed in the following sections.

There are two essentially different 'types of case-hardening processes; that using a dry mixture in which the object to be case-hardened is packed and kept for the necessary time at the necessary temperature, and the "liquid" proccss, employing a bath of fused salts into which the object is immersed and which by immediate contact case-hardens the surface of the article. The Shimer process belongs to the second class, and was a war emergency invention. Of the liquid melts used as baths, the most effective and most frequently used are melted potassium cyanide and melted sodium cyanide. These may be used either pure or mixed with salts that reduce the melting point and the percentage of .cyanide present. The use of these baths since 1914 has met many commercial difficulties because of the high price and frequent commercial scarcity of the cyanide salts; at present sodium cyanide has practically entirely displaced potassium cyanide. Another trouble is the danger to the workmen handling the cyanide salts, which are extremely poisonous, and the annoying and poisonous vapors or gases given off in the workshop, unless an effective system of hoods and ventilation is provided, so as to prevent the gases from the baths mixing with the air of the room. Porter W. Shimer, of Easton, Pa., has invented a substitute1 for the bath of melted cyanides which case-hardens with equal or greater facility and effectiveness, gives off no poisonous vapors, and costs for chemicals materially less than the cyanide costs in the previously used baths. The process has been in use over a year in a large American works and the following statement embodies the results of practical experience in the use and operation of the process. The Shimer liquid or melted bath consists of a mixture of easily fusible salts that do not possess case-hardening properties, into which is immersed fresh calcium eyanamid, which imparts to the bath case-hardening properties. The composition of the non-case-hardening salts appears rather immaterial. Good results have been obtained by using a mixture of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and barium chloride in equal proportions by weight; also a mixture of one part sodium chloride

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

The slip mode activated during the c axis compression of single crystals of commercial-purity ingot SR beryllium, high-purity (twelve-zone-pass) beryllium, and Be-4.4 wt pct Cu and Be-5.2 wt pct Ni alloys in the temperature range of 25° to 364°C was determined using two-surface slip trace analysis, slip-step height analysis, and electron transmission microscopy. All three techniques indicated the occurrence of copious pyramidal {1 122) (1123) slip in the alloys over the entire temperature range, the amount increasing with temperature. Pyramidal slip was also indicated in the high-purity beryllium by slip trace analysis and electron transmission microscopy, but the amount was somewhat less than in the alloys. For the commercial-purity ingot crystals, only a very small number of pyramidal slip lines were observed, and these were in the immediate vicinity of the fracture surface. No pyramidal dislocations could be detected by electron transmission microscopy in this material. Dislocatransmissiontions with Burgers vectors [0001] and +(ll20) were identified by electron transmission microscopy inthe (1122) slip bands, as well as those with the j (1123) vector. This was interpreted to indicate that the edge components of the 3(1123) vector dislocations activated during c axis compression dissociate upon unloading according to the reaction i (1123) — [0001] + 3(1120) THE microstrain c axis compression of single crystals of commercial-purity ingot SR beryllium (99.6 pct), high-purity twelve-zone-pass beryllium (99.98 pct), Be-5.24 pct Ni and Be-4.37 pct Cu alloys was described in a previous paper.1 This paper covers in detail the analysis of slip traces observed on two mutually perpendicular lateral surfaces of these specimens, and a detailed description of transmission electron microscopy studies performed on foils cut from the bulk crystals after they had been deformed to fracture in the c axis compression. Observation of slip traces on single surfaces of deformed single crystals are generally insufficient to positively identify slip or twinning modes. The use of two carefully cut and oriented perpendicular surfaces can greatly aid in the positive identification and index- ing of slip traces, although even this technique may be quite inadequate if more than one type of slip system operates and if an insufficient number of traces are observed on the surfaces. The problem is greatly simplified for symmetric cases like that for c axis compression of an hep crystal such as beryllium, in which the operating slip systems are all equally inclined to the direction of the applied stress, and each slip system of a given slip mode has an equal chance of operating. For such cases, the traces of any given slip mode observed on the surfaces cut parallel to the c axis are symmetrically tilted about the c axis. It is therefore possible to quickly determine whether one or more slip modes are operating. Confirmatory evidence in support of the observations made on the external surfaces can be obtained from foils cut from the deformed crystals and examined by transmission electron microscopy. This latter technique serves to identify not only the operating slip plane but also the Burgers vector of the dislocations which participate in the slip. For this purpose, a simplified technique based upon a double tetrahedron notation is used in the present paper. The planes and directions in the hep lattice are all designated by letters rather than indices and extinction conditions are easily determined if the Burgers vector lies in the plane contributing to the diffraction. RESULTS 1) Slip Trace Analysis. The standard (0001) stereo-graphic projection of beryllium is shown in Fig. 1. The two mutually perpendicular, lateral surfaces of the compression specimen are represented by the diametrical planes AA' and BB', also referred to as surface A and surface B. For the specific case represented (a Be-5.24 pct Ni specimen deformed by c axis compression at room temperature), the A surface is tilted 5 deg to the (10i0') plane and the B surface is tilted 5 deg to the (1120) plane. Two surface trace analyses may be facilitated by examining in turn the intersection of various great circle traces of specific pyramidal planes with two surfaces and comparing the angles made with the (0001) plane with those actually observed on the two surfaces. One then identifies the slip traces by trial and error on a best-fit basis. The (1122) type planes (it was found that slip occurred on these planes) are shown plotted on the stereographic projection in Fig. 1. The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

MANY things must be considered in coming to a decision as to what type of crushing and grinding equipment is to be used for preparing run-of-mine ore for concentration, amalgamation, flotation, or cyanidation. This paper is intended in no sense as a thorough discussion of these various factors, but rather contains a few observations based on a wide experience in the manufacture and application of milling machinery. One important governing factor is the tonnage to be dealt with. In large plants treating several thousands of tons in eight hours, a large jaw or gyratory crusher of substantial construction is standard equipment for reducing ore to 8 or 10 in. or finer. In open-pit work, using power shovels with 4- or 5-yd. dippers, a jaw crusher should have a receiving opening of 48 by 60 in., or 60 by 84 in., so that dynamite or hand sledging will not be required for breaking to a finer size before primary crushing. The coarsely broken ore is then conveyed by a belt to vibrating screens, the oversize from which is again conveyed by belts to secondary crushers having openings of 12 or 14 in., the product from which is conveyed to storage. From storage, the material goes to a finishing gyratory for reduction to 1/4 in. or finer.

Under sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of balls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists in the coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otllerwise prepared for use. Pyrites in Microscopic Particles All coals that have been examined by the author contained a varying amount of sulfur in very small globules, or particles, of pyrite. These particles are seen in a thin [section as roughly rounded opaque dots, Figs. 1 to 10. When isolated, they are generally shown to be approximately spherical in shape, with a rough outer surface. They vary in diameter from a few microns to a hundred microns, the majority messuring from 25 to 40 microns; relatively few exceed the latter diameter. They are, therefore, very small objects. Their size is best appreciated by comparing the illustrations, in which they are shown. at a magnifiea tion of 100 diameters, with some known area like the period used in the ordinary printed page. The period is about 0.6 mm. in diameter, and . when magnified 100 times, will cover a circular area of about 2 1/2 in. in diameter, or all but the corners of the illustrations. The illustrations, therefore, represent an area about as large as an ordinary period, and the pyrite globules form but a small part of the total area. Coinpletely integrated thin-film circuits inco?,porating more than 1000 active and passive elements have been fabricated reproducibly in the laboratory by evaporation of- all components. A 180-stage modified shift register comprising 540 CdSe TFT's, 360 resistovs, and 180 capacitors was deposited upon a glass substrate during one pump-down of the vacuum systeitl. Experimental units have been operated for more than 5000 hr at temperatures uP to 85°C without failure of any slages. The present pupper reviews the charvactevistics of evaporated thin-film transistors (TFT's) and discusses their application to integrnted circuils. INTEGRATED circuits most widely used today are based upon silicon technology, with the circuits formed on the surface of a block of single-crystal silicon1 or on a block of sapphire 2,3 upon which a thin layer of silicon has been deposited. Transistor patterns and interconnections are defined by photographic procedures using photoresist masking. Large groups of transistors are produced in batches which undergo many processing steps, some of which are carried out at elevated temperatures. Passive elements are formed by treatment of the semiconductor surface or are deposited by evaporation alongside the active elements. The size and complexity of the circuits are limited by defects in the devices and by the size of the available single-crystal chips. Capacitative coupling to the semiconducting substrate may also limit useful size and frequency response of the circuits. An alternative approach to integrated circuits is based upon the deposition by evaporation of all circuit components upon a noncrystalline, insulating substrate such as glass.4 Thin-film field-effect transistors,1'6 known as TFT's, can be deposited in large arrays on glass or plastic substrates at the same time the associated passive elements are being deposited. Although still in the research stage the all-evaporated approach is expected to offer certain advantages for many applications. In particular, the use of thin films upon a noncrystalline substrate offers the prospect of producing complex, large-area circuits not now feasible with single-crystal silicon. Important applications of this type include memory arrays for computers and imaging devices for television. The ease with which the evaporated TFT's can be deposited may permit continuous, automated production methods not possible with high-temperature batch processing. Recent advances7'8 in the fabrication of thin-film transistors have led to greatly improved reproduci-bility and life of the TFT's. Experimental circuits having over 1000 active and passive elements deposited upon a common glass substrate are currently being produced in the laboratory. The present paper reviews recent progress in the development of the TFT and in its application to integrated circuits. I) DESCRIPTION OF THE THIN-FILM FIELD-EFFECT TRANSISTOR The TFT is a field-effect transistor of the type having the control gate separated from the semiconductor by a thin insulating spacer. Although its operation resembles that of the silicon MOS transistorg its construction is based entirely on thin-film techniques. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of an evaporated TFT deposited upon a glass substrate compared with a silicon MOS transistor deposited upon single-crystal sapphire.3 The semiconductor in the TFT is a poly crystal line layer, of a material which can be readily evaporated, such as cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide,l0 or tellurium." Silicon monoxide layers have usually served as the gate insulator, but other oxides, sulfides, and fluorides may be used. Film thicknesses range from a few hundred to a few thousand angstroms. The source, drain, and gate electrodes in the TFT are of metal. Qpical source-drain gap dimensions are 0.0003 x 0.030 in., with a gate strip whose width slightly overlaps the source and drain. The source and drain electrodes should make low impedance contacts to the semiconductor. With cadmium sulfide films, gold is a satisfactory material for underlying electrodes, while aluminum is preferable for overlying electrodes.12 Considerable variation in design of the TFT is permissible, with the electrodes being

Silver ore was first discovered in 1866 at Manhattan, and a few ore shipments were treated in a mill at nearby Belmont. The district was abandoned from 1869 to April 1, 1905, when rich gold float was discovered on what was to be called the April Fool claim. By early 1906, 4, 000 people lived in Manhattan. The San Francisco earthquake, in April of 1906, caused the withdrawal of capital from Manhattan and most of the mines were shut down. Later that year and in 1907, however, more strikes were made. The camp prospered until the mid-1920s, but a steady production of several hundred thousand dollars per year was sustained even during the great depression. Then, in 1939, Nevada's first bucket-line dredge was installed below the town and operated until 1947, producing $4.6 million in gold. The Houston International Minerals operation at Manhattan was started in July of 1980 at a throughput of about 545 mt per day (600 st per day). In contrast to the early day underground operations, Houston's mine is open-pit and processes low-grade disseminated ores. The ore is a metamorphic schist containing 2. 7 g Au and 1. 03 g Ag per mt (0. 08 oz Au and 0. 03 oz Ag per st). Some coarse gold, up to 1 mm in size, is present. Mining and haulage is done by a contractor. Stockpiled mine-run ore is crushed in three stages comprising a jaw crusher and two cone crushers, with screens ahead of the cone crushers. Crushed product, at about 19 mm (3/4 in.) size, is stored in a silo. Grinding is by single stage ball mill with the discharge passing over two hydraulic traps for coarse gold removal. These traps will be replaced in late 1980 by a two-cell Pan American jig treating the cyclone underflow. The jig hutch product, along with the hydraulic trap product that has been stored, will be treated further for gold recovery. The gravity tails will then be cycloned with the underflow being recirculated in the ball mill and the overflow being treated by flotation. A rougher concentrate is made in twelve No. 48 Galigher cells with the float tails being cycloned. Cyclone underflow is refloated in another four No. 48 cells; the overflow is treated in sluice boxes for further gold recovery before being sent by gravity to the tailings pond. Bulk flotation concentrates are cleaned three times with the final concentrate being thickened. The thickener underflow is then batch cyanided in mechanically agitated tanks and washed with barren liquor

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff" backfill to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.
