It is delightful to read a technical paper like that of J. E. Johnson, The Effect of High Carbon on the Quality of Charcoal-Iron, presented in October, 1912, at the Cleveland meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.' The clear, simple, and straightforward manner in which he describes his experiments and results makes you feel as if you had been, so to speak, at his elbow during the course of his investigations, while his method of procedure is so rational that you can fairly anticipate each step in the logical sequence of the tests performed. The following notes suggested by Mr. Johnson's paper are presented here in the hope that they may help, if only a mite, towards the final solution of a problem of considerable scientific and industrial importance. Physical Properties of Cast-Iron us. Its Ultimate Composition. Mr. Johnson writes that " an investigation along the lines of consumption showed that different irons have different characters totally independent of their analyses," and he declares that " the presence or absence of these elements [meaning carbon, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese] alone will not account for all, scarcely for a half, of the facts which have long been known." He further tells us that some foundries have " proved, by the most irrefutable tests, that they could take a certain iron of a given analysis and produce certain results," while with " another iron of the same analysis they could not produce these results at all." I feel confident that every experienced and thinking metallurgist will readily believe Mr. Johnson's statements and will share his views in regard to the hopelessness of inferring the

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the separation efficiency (E,): E. = (R - R,), where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and R, the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The separation efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products. The problem of quantitatively assessing the results of a mineral concentration process recurs whenever one tries to decide which of two similar test results is more desirable. Although economic factors may greatly influence the eventual choice of process, they usually have very little to do with the technical excellence of a separation and are, therefore, not a consideration at this point. Concentrate grade and recovery, used simultaneously are the most widely accepted measures of performance, and if both the grade and the recovery are greater for one case than for another, the choice is simple. However, when the results of closely competitive operations are compared, it often occurs that one set of test results shows a higher grade and a lower recovery than another and the choice is no longer obvious. Laboratory investigations of a mineral concentration process applied to a given feed material can often be designed to yield successive paired values of concentrate grade and recovery over the practical range of the course of a separation process.' These results may be plotted as some combination of the cumulative values of grade, weight recovery, or unit recovery in the concentrate. The resulting correlations for two slightly different sets of conditions can then be compared qualitatively, or even quantitatively in particular cases.2 Such comparisons are not applicable, however, to individual concentration test results. The reduction of a separation test result to a single efficiency figure, preferably as a percentage of ideality, would afford the simplest and most precise means for comparing the results of competitive tests. The effective proportion of feed material that undergoes complete separation in any real concentration process, hereafter referred to as "separation efficiency," is such a figure. It is essily calculated from the usual feed and product data and can even be evaluated, in many cases, from data in publications describing various concentration processes. Mineral Concentration Processes and Their Evaluation Mineral Concentration Processes: The overall concentration process may be subdivided into a liberation process which severs the bonds between unlike mineral species, and a separation process, which sorts the resulting liberated particles into two products—a concentrate rich in mineral A and a tailing lean in mineral A. A perfect mineral concentration process is represented by the idealized scheme shown in Fig. 1 in which liberation and separation are not differentiated. The feed mixture consists of two mineral types which are completely liberated early in the process and then sorted by type. All the mineral particles of type A which respond uniquely to the selection forces acting in the ideal separator, report to the concentrate, while all the mineral particles of type non-A report to the tail-

The high- and low-cycle fatigue poperties of MAR-M200 directionally -solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms were determined at 1400" and 1700°F. These results were compared with the corresponding properties of conventionally -cast MAR-M200. The low-cycle fatigue lives of the columnar-grained and single crystal materials were similar at both temperatures and were one to two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventionally-cast material. The variations in the fatigue lives among the three forms of MAR-M200 were related to the more rapid rate of intergranular muck propagation compared to that of transgranular propagation. In conventionally-cast MAR-M200, cracks were initiated in grain boundaries and crack popagation occurred rapidly along an almost continuous grain boundary path. In the columnar-grained material, crack initiation occurred on short transverse segments of grain boundaries, but crack propagation was transgranular. The fatigue lives of columnar-grained and single crystal materials were approximately the same because most of the life in both materials was spent in trans-granular propagation. For the directionally -solidified materials, the number of cycles to failure, Nf, can be related to the total strain range, , by: heT = K where n and K are 0.16 and 0.044 at 1400'F and 0.29and 0.098 at 1700, respectively. In addition to intergranular crack initiation in the columnar-grained material, initiation also occurred at we-cracked MC carbides and micropores in both directionally-solidified materials. At 1400°F, fatigue life was reduced with increasing MC carbide size, but at 1700 there was no effect of carbide size. THE creep and stress-rupture properties of conventionally-cast nickel-base superalloys can be greatly improved by directional solidification into either single crystal or columnar-grained forms. The improvement in properties results from a reduction in intergranular cavitation and crack growth in the columnar-grained materials and the complete absence of this fracture mode in the single crystals. This paper describes the effect of grain boundaries on the elevated temperature fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200. The effect of cycling frequency on cracking arid fatigue life and the role of MC carbides and micropores on crack initiation are also emphasized. The fatigue properties of columnar-grained and single crystal MAR-M200 at room tem- perature,4,5 and the change in the mode of fatigue crack propagation with temperature6 have recently been described. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this study was the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200, directionally-solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms. The columnar grains were approximately 0.5 mm in diam. The nominal composition of these materials in wt pct was 0.15C, 9Cr, 12.5W, loco, 5A1. 2Ti, lCb, 0.05Zr. 0.015B, bal Ni. They were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr. which resulted in 0.2 pct offset yield stresses of 150,000? 144,000, and 95,000 psi at room temperature? 1400°, and 1700°F, respectively. The corresponding elastic moduli parallel to the testing direction were 19.2. 15.0, and 12.5 x 106 psi, respectively. Specimen design, testing procedures and alloy mi-crostructure have been described previously and will only be summarized here. Following the 1600°F aging treatment. MAR-M200 contains an ordered, cuboidal, y' precipitate 0.3 1 on edge, which is coherent with the 1 matrix. The y' precipitate is quite stable; even after testing at 1700°F. the precipitate is only slightly enlarged and its corners somewhat rounded. The alloy also contains a small volume fraction of micropores, and MC carbides. some of which contain preexisting cracks5 formed during casting. These cracks are always parallel to the long dimension of the carbide. Measurement of MC carbide size has been described previously.5 Axial fatigue tests were conducted in air over a wide range of strain amplitudes in both the high - and low-cycle fatigue regions, with specimen lives varying from about 10' to 10' cycles. Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were strain-controlled with strain varied between zero and a maximum tensile value at a frequency of about 2 cpm. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) tests were stress-controlled with the stress varied between 5000 psi and a maximum tensile value less than the yield stress at a frequency of either 10 cps or 0.033 cps (2 cpm). The temperature in the gage section was controlled to 52°F. Specimen axes were within 5 deg of the [001] growth axis of the single crystals and the common [001 ] growth axis of the columnar-grained material. Specimen gage sections were electro polished prior to testing. After the standard heat treatment, three specimens were coated with a typical aluminide coating applied as a slurry. An additional specimen was given the coating heat treatment without actually being coated. In all cases: specimens were reaged at 1600°F for 32 hr after receiving the coating heat treatment at 1975'F for 4 hr.

HUNT and Jackson' have recently suggested that binary eutectics might be classified according to the entropy of fusion of the component phases. Such a classification was in fact proposed2 some time ago by the authors and the purpose of this communication is to present some supporting evidence. As pointed out by Hunt and Jackson' typical metals of low entropy of fusion, ?S, tend to form normal eutectics (using Scheil's terminology3). Where one phase is metallic (low ?S) and the other nonmetallic (high AS) then anomalous structures are formed. These anomalous structures may either be regular (e.g., Bi-Sn)or irregular (e.g., A1-Si). Finally Hunt and Jackson suggest that where both phases are of high ?S regular faceted structures are formed. In the proposed classification2 the ratio of the entropies of fusion is taken as the quantitative parameter, i.e., ?Sa/?SB = E, where e > 1.0. An extensive literature survey has been carried out2,4 for reliable photomicrographs of eutectic structures. The structures, numbering 151, have been classified into two classes, viz., normal (i.e., lamellar and rodlike) and anomalous. The latter group has been arbitrarily subdivided into regular and irregular anomalous eutectics. Details and sources of the structures are given elsewhere.2,4 In the absence of better thermodynamic data the value of E has been determined for each of the systems making the following assumptions and approximations: l) The entropy of fusion of solid solutions may be calculated additively;5 ii) Inter metallic compounds are treated similarly but with the addition of the following term for fully ordered structures.5 -4.573(Ni lOg10 Nl + N2 log10 N2) where Nl and N2 are the atomic fractions. It might be argued that the entropies of fusion are meaningless as the eutectic phases form at some temperature (T,°K) below their true melting point (Ta or Tb). As AS, = Lo/To if La the latent heat of fusion of a, is assumed independent of temperature, the actual entropy change AS& is given by La/Te. The ratio of entropies of fusion then becomes Fig. 1 shows E' plotted against cumulative totals for normal and anomalous systems from which it is seen that normal eutectics predominate at low values of E'; e.g., some 90 pct of normal systems lie below E' = 1.5 with 65 pct of anomalous systems above this value. Fig. 1 also shows that the regular anomalous structures occur mostly at low values of c' possibly suggesting growth more akin to normal than anomalous growth. The choice of c as a classification parameter was based on nucleation concepts, it being observed that metals widely separated in Sundquist and Mondolfo's8 nucleation series were anomalous and those close together normal. The basis of these classification views is really outside the intended scope of this communication but it is hoped to explain them fully in the near future.7 Having arrived at this entropy of fusion classification by nucleation considerations it is interesting to note that Hunt and Jackson's ideas are based on growth considerations. Elsewhere one of the authors4 has shown that an even better classification of the metallographic structures reviewed is obtained from purely conventional heterogeneous nucleation concepts. It has been found that systems having a value of the parameter +b less than 0.28 are almost certainly normal and above this anomalous: V, is the gram atomic volume. This parameter is nevertheless closely related to c and c', these being an approximation of p. The parameter is also related to the other classification3,8,9 which have met with any success in the past. THE Verde mining district is in Yavapai County, in north-central Arizona. Jerome, the principal town, has a population of 6000 and the two important mines of the district-the United Verde and the United Verde Extension-lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft. (1463 and 1676 m.) respectively, both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which the ore is hauled to the smelters. Clarkdale, the smelter town for the United Verde mines, lies in the Verde valley 4.1 miles (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel and Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 miles long and has a compensated grade of 4 per cent. At Clarkdale it connects with the Verde valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad. Clemenceau, the smelter town for the United Verde Extension mine, lies 3.5 miles (5.8 km.) in a southeasterly direction from Clarkdale, at an elevation of 3420 ft. It is connected to the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad at Clarkdale by the Arizona Extension R. R., . a subsidiary of the United Verde Extension Mining Co. The portal of the haulage tunnel, at an elevation of 3757.5 ft., is also connected with the smelter town by 4 miles of standard-gage track belonging to? the same company. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the highest peaks of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. Two lava-capped mesas, known as "Mingus" and "Wood chute mountains," form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the Old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome, or Verde, mining district. If the . smelter towns are not included, a strip about 7 miles long by 3 miles (11 by 5 km.) wide, embraces practically all of the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from First View, 2 miles northwest from Jerome, to the vicinity of Allen Springs, at the south end of Mingus mountain and all within the boundaries of the Prescott national forest reserve.

MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA San Francisco Section The San Francisco Section of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America held a joint meeting with the local section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Engineers' Club, San Francisco, on Tuesday, Apr. 16, 1918. The meeting was preceded by a dinner. Letters from the parent body in NewYork asking for the consideration of the proposed bill before Congress, and an expression of opinion relative to the appointment of a Federal Administrator of Mines justified the joint meeting of the local sections of the two mining societies, in that a more representative opinion of the engineers of California could he obtained. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Mr. Frank H. Probert acting as Chairman. About thirty engineers were present. Mr. Probert read a letter of March 14, from Secretary Huntoon, asking that the meeting be called. He read excerpts from Bulletin 117 of February 28, 1918, of the Mining and Metallurgical Society containing a copy of the proposed bill, so that all present might be advised of its essential contents. He briefly commented on the urgent need of such legislation and invited discussion of the subject. After long and thorough discussion on the part of the members present, Professor Lawson made the following motion: I move that a resolution expressing the sense of the joint meeting of the local sections of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and Mining and Metallurgical Society of America be forwarded to the secretaries of the two societies to the effect that we heartily approve of the purpose and intention of the bill designed to promote and stimulate the production of minerals necessary for the successful prosecution of the war; and that we suggest prices should be fixed for the period of the war and two years thereafter, and that these prices, guaranteed by the Government, should apply at the nearest shipping point to place of production of the minerals. This motion was carried. The meeting then adjourned, and a telegram was sent by Mr. Probert, the Chairman, to Mr. Huntoon, notifying him of the motion that had been carried at the meeting.

A revised treatment of the authors' published data eliminates the complex relation previously proposed between concentration of silicon and activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid iron. Revised values of the thermodynamic properties of the liquid solution are presented. IN a recent experimental study of the reaction SiO2 (s) = Si+ 2O; Kf, = [% Si] [% O]² [1] the authors' found a substantially constant equilibrium product in liquid iron at 1600°C of 2.8x10-5 They also reported extensive data on the reactions: SiO2 (s) + 2H2 (8) = Si- + 2H2O (g); K'2= [% Si] (H2O/H2 [2] and H, (g) + 0 = H2O (g); K'3 =( H2 O [31 (H2) [%O] From the results on reaction 3 and earlier data of Dastur² on this same reaction in the absence of silicon, they determined the activity coefficient of oxygen, f0, on the basis of the definition K3 = (H2O)/ (H2)f0 [% 0] where K, is the equilibrium constant and f0, is taken as unity in the pure Fe-0 system. Similarly values of fsi were deduced from results on reaction 2. In a more recent study" of analogous reactions in the system Fe-A1-0, it was found impossible to reconcile the results on reaction 3 with Dastur's data; accordingly the latter were ignored and the equilibrium results were extrapolated to find a value of K, at zero concentration of aluminum. This procedure failed to locate the cause of the discrepancy but it did yield reasonable values of activity coefficients. It also avoided introduction of the complex empirical relation between the oxygen activity coefficient and the concentration of the added element. The same type of discrepancy exists for system Fe-Si-0.' In the earlier paper an attempt was made to fit both sets of data by a single curved line (Fig. 6 of ref. l), the form of which is contrary to the theoretical requirement of a finite slope at infinite dilution. In the light of experience on the Fe-A1-0 system the discrepancy must be recognized as one which can be resolved only by more refined measurements. Accordingly Figs. 6 and 10 are retracted. It is pointed out also that until the discrepancy is resolved Figs. 7, 8, and 11 are subject to some uncertainty. Qualitatively the following conclusions still appear valid: 1—The activity coefficient of oxygen is reduced by addition of silicon. 2—In dilute solutions the activity coefficient of silicon increases with its concentration. 3—With respect to equilibrium in reaction 1, the above effects are approximately compensating. The discussion of K'1 in the previous paper requires no revision. It was pointed out that the constancy of the product [% Si] [% 0]² ndicated a compensating effect of the activity coefficients of silicon and oxygen. Therefore, as a very good approximation, K1 = K'1 and the following average values are suggested both for K, and K', at the temperatures 1550°, 1600°, and 1650", respectively, 1.0x10-", 2.8~10-" and 5.5 ~lo-'. Revision of the thermodynamic treatment is necessitated by the recent appearance of new data, based on a combination of combustion and solution calorimetry,' which yields for the heat of formation of low-cristobalite from the elements, the value —209,330 ±250 cal per mol at 25°C. This is about 4000 cal larger than the value previously accepted. The new value for cristobalite is used, together with Kelley's tables of high-temperature heat contents" and entropies and with Korber and Oelsen's' heat of fusion of silicon to obtain the following equation for the standard free energy of cristobalite in the temperature range 1700" to 2000°K: Si (1) + 02 (g) = Si02 (crist.); ?F° = -217,700 + 47.OT [4] The free energy of solution of 0, in liquid iron is:8 O2 (g) = 20 (in Fe); AF° = -55,860 - 1.14T [5] and these two equations are combined to give: Si (1) + 20 = SiO, (crist.); AF° = -161,840 + 48.14T [6] ?F°1873 = -71,700 cal. From the experimental value of K, = 2.8x10-5, Si + 20 = SiO2 (crist.); ?F°1873 = -39,000 cal. [7] The combination of Eqs. 6 and 7 yields the free energy change when liquid silicon dissolves in iron to form the dilute solution of unit activity (1 pct). Si (1) = Si; ?F°1873 = -32,700 cal. [8] The heat effect in this process according to Korber and Oelsen' is an evolution of 28,500 cal per gram

Although one of the primary variables in the calculation of the flowing bottom-hole pressure in gas wells from surface measurements is the temperature at any point and its distribution in the flow-string, only few experimental data are available in the literature and little attention has been given to analysis of the problem. Virtually all of the recently published methods of calculating flowing bottom-hole pressures depend on the assumption that either the temperature is constant at some average value or that the variation is linear with depth. The purposes of this work are to analyze the problem theoretically and to verify the analysis by comparison with experimental data so that practical problems in the analysis of the behavior of gas wells can be solved with greater accuracy, reliability, and ease. MATHEMATICAL OUTLINE OF PROBLEM Assuming that: 1. The mass velocity and chemical composition of the gas stream are constant and in normal gas well operations, the change in linear velocity in the entire flow-string is trivial, 2. The product of the density and heat capacity of the gas is constant, 3. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the gas stream, 4. Net flow of heat by conduction within the formation and in the gas stream in the vertical direction is trivial in magnitude and can be neglected, 5. The regional vertical geothermal gradient is constant, and 6. The temperature of the gas entering the borehole is constant, and equal to that of the reservoir, a set of two simultaneous, linear partial differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions was derived to describe the temperature distribution in the gas stream and the surrounding formation. These equations were solved by operational techniques for the distribution of temperature in the gas stream. The resulting integrals were evaluated numerically on an IBM 604 at the Machine Accounting Div. of the Railroad Commission of Texas. DERIVATION OF FUNCTIONS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPERATURE The physical system is a circular hole of radius a in an infinite medium with thermal conductivity K, density p8, and heat capacity c,. wben a displacement front encounters an isolated permeability heterogeneity, it will be perturbed. The details of this perturbation will depend on the beterogeneity size and shape, the Permeability contrast, and the mobility ratio. This paper deals with the displacement front behavior for one, simple, mathematically tractable model: a circular permeability discontinuity and unit mobility ratio. The progress of an initially planar front is shown for four permeability contrasts: k2/k1 = 0, 5/2, 2, m. The front distortion is more pronounced than streamline and isopotential distortion and it approaches a constant shape downstream from the discontinuity. INTRODUCTION The impact of reservoir heterogeneities on oil displacing processes depends upon the variation of the heterogeneous property (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution), and the inherent stability of the displacement mechanism.l The interplay of these factors plus the impracticability, if not impossibility, of describing a natural rock system in any detail makes exact displacement front movements difficult to determine. It is useful, however, to be able to qualitatively visualize what heterogeneities will do to a displacement front. In this respect certain simple models that can be treated analytically are of value. The following analysis will show the displacement front behavior for one such model. MODEL DESCRIPTION The flow field is two-dimensional and infinite in extent. The fluid flow is single phase, steady state and unidirectional at x, y = 2 m, or before insertion of the discontinuity. A circular permea- bility discontinuity is placed at the origin. Porosity and thickness are the same within and exterior to the heterogeneity. This is exactly the same model that was used by Greenkorn et al. to check analytically Streamlines as determined by Heie-Shaw flow models and finite difference computer techniques.2 FRONT POSITION CALCULATIONS The results of displacement front calculations are presented in Figs. 1 through 4 for four different permeability contrasts: k2/kl = O, %, 2, m. The times corresponding to the front locations are the Same for the 0 and cases! and for the 1/2 and 2 cases. Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months.
