During the year of 1944 and the first half of 1945, the Climax Molybdenum Co. made a study of some of the problems in block and panel caving, with the use of a scale model. The experiments dealt essentially with the type of rock and conditions at Climax, but some experiments were carried out to simulate conditions found in other mines. Most of the previous experiments on the caving characteristics of rock have dealt with sedimentary or broken igneous material. The series of experiments described here was designed to show the caving action of unbroken igneous rock. Con- siderable difficulty was experienced in duplicating unbroken material in the model. The results obtained are believed to be relatively correct, but verification must necessarily come from future mine operation. Observations in the mine and glory hole, together with statistical data, were used as criteria for creating similar conditions in the model. In 1913, George R. Lehman' experimented with broken material in a model for the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. and, more recently, P. B. Bucky2 experimented with broken material with a capping of mill tailings. Mr. Lehman's model represented a maximum ore height of 70 ft. capped by 55 ft. of waste. He varied the draw-hole spacing from 6¼ ft. to 8? ft. and 12½ ft. The material used graduated from fines to 30-in. maximum size. Some of his conclusions were: "(I) The less the distance between chute centers, the greater the extraction (Fig. I); (2) the higher the ore column, the greater the extraction; (3) the less the amount drawn at a time from each chute, uniformly, the greater the extraction of clean ore before the capping appeared, but not the greater the total extraction to a I per cent copper final product." The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-B alloys (0.001 to 0.91 pet B) is determined by the Sieverts' technique for temperatures of 950° to 1150°C. The activity coefficient of nitrogen is decreased by boron. The three-phase equilibrium between ? iron, BN, and gas is established and also the four-phase equilibrium between iron, BN, Fe2B, and gas. The above equilibria are calculated for a iron. The relation of these data to hardenability and strain aging of boron-treated steels is discussed. BORON additions are known to enhanbe the hardenability of heat-treatable steels and to assist in the control of strain aging in sheet steel for deep drawing. The increase in hardenability is explained by the theory that adsorption of boron on austenite grain boundaries reduces their free energy and thus retards ferrite and upper bainite nucleation.l,2 Digges and Reinhart3 have shown that the full effectiveness of boron in commercial steels is achieved only when strong nitride formers such as titanium and zirconium are also present. The influence of nitrogen on eliminating the boron contribution to hardenability was also demonstrated by Shyne and Morgan.4 These workers prepared Ni-Mo steels containing either nitrogen or boron or nitrogen plus boron. The nitrogen-plus-boron steels showed the lowest hardenability which was attributed to the presence of stable nucleating particles, presumably nitride. Morgan and Shyne5-7 have shown that boron in the amount of 0.007 pet will completely eliminate strain aging due to nitrogen in low-carbon, open-hearth steels. In addition, by proper control of the boron additions, a rimming steel can be produced. Since the effectiveness of boron on hardenability and eliminating strain aging is influenced by the amount and distribution of the nitrogen in the steel, the present study was. undertaken to determine the influence of boron on the solubility of nitrogen in iron. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-B alloys was measured by the method of Sieverts, which consists of determining the amount of gas dissolved by the metal in a constant volume system. The apparatus employed in this investigation and the experimental details have beendescribed previously.B AMcLeodgage was added to the apparatus to allow measurements at very low pressures. The alloys were melted at reduced pressure in a basic-lined induction furnace using electrolytic iron and ferroboron. Ferroboron was added after the primary deoxidation of the iron with carbon. Since it was difficult to attain a constant low level of oxygen by this procedure, silicon was added after the carbon deoxidation and prior to the ferr obor on addition. The alloys were castas 2-in. sq ingots, heated in argon at 1050loC, and forged to 1/4-in. plate. After forging, 1116 in. was machined from each side of the plate to remove any possible contamination, and it was then cold-rolled to 0.010-in. sheet. The sheet was cut into approximately 1/4-in. squares and pickled in an inhibited H2SO4 solution to ensure a clean surface. In the case of the boron alloys, a hydrogen treatment could not be used for surface cleaning because boron losses resulted. The composition of the alloys is given in Table I. For a solubility determination, a 75-g sample was inserted in a quartz tube and sealed in place in the apparatus. The entire system was evacuated at room temperature and leak tested for 24 hr. If no leaks were observed, the system was heated to the temperature of measurement and again leak tested for 24 hr. If no leaks were detected, the hot volume and solubility determinations were begun. The hot volume was determined at a constant temperature for each run by admitting successive amounts of argon and recording pressure vs volume, which, in all cases, resulted in a straightline relationship. The argon was then removed and the procedure repeated with nitrogen. Successive additions were made until the desired nitrogen content of the metal and equilibrium pressure of the system were obtained. The

Tensile tests on aluminum single crystals, grown from the melt, revealed that the yield stress of these crystals was raised as the amount of striation substructure was increased. The number of striation-type boundaries was varied by changing the rate of growth of the crystals. The results are interpreted in terns of a blockage of dislocation movement by striation boundaries. IMPERFECTIONS are known to have a large effect on the mechanical properties of metals. Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1 studied a block or striation-type substructure in tin and found that the formation of the striations depended upon rate of crystal growth and orientation. They found that the angular misorienta-tion between neighboring striations varied between 15 min and 5 deg. Atwater and chalmers2 investigated striations in tin and lead, and found that purity was another factor which influenced their formation. There was a limiting purity above which the striations were straight and regular. There is little information in the literature concerning how substructures in melt-grown crystals affect strength. washburn3 introduced small-angle boundaries into zinc by a shear process and found a subsequent increase in yield stress which he attributed to the presence of these boundaries. Lauriente and pond4 found the critical resolved shear stress in aluminium crystals grown from the melt, to increase with etch pit density. The etch pits were used as an indication of growth imperfections. In Hibbard's5 work on lineage structure in copper crystals grown from the melt, he tested one crystal containing interlineage boundaries, and found a 50 pct increase in the critical resolved shear stress. Fleischer and Chalmers6, in a recent paper, mention briefly that, in the production of aluminium crystals from the melt when the growth rate was raised from 1.2 to 18 cm per hr, the yield stress increased 50 pct. They felt that the increase in yield stress with rate of growth might be attributed to a higher concentration of impurities in the gage length and also might be affected by the increased number of small-angle boundaries (striations). The present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of the striation substructure on the strength of aluminum single crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum single crystals of 99.9992 purity were grown from the melt using a technique described by Chalmers.7 The growth rate was varied from 0.6 to 20 mm per min, thus producing crystals with varying numbers of striation boundaries. To avoid prior deformation, the crystals were chemically cut to the desired length with a saturated solution of cupric chloride. They were then annealed at 580°C for 24 hr and allowed to cool slowly in the furnace. Finally, the specimens were electropolished using an electrolyte of 5 parts ethyl alcohol and 1 part perchloric acid. Each specimen was approximately 5 in. in length and 0.125 sq in. in cross section. The average orientations of the 5 series of crystals studied are shown on the stereographic projection of Fig. 1. The crystals were strained approximately 2 pct in a soft tensile machine. The strain sensitivity was 3.6 x 10-4 cm over a 5-cm gage length.

For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyrocompasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyrocompass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. For further details the reader is referred to several excellent publications'"3 covering the principles and application of the gyroscope. The heart of the gyro-compass is the gyroscope, or rapidly spinning wheel, which rigidly maintains its angular orientation in inertial space. Free gyros employ universal joints to allow the wheel axle to maintain its rigid spatial orientation independent of base motion disturbances. Free gyros are independent of the earth's turning and are not north-seeking. Only as they might be initially oriented parallel to the earth's turning axis could any north indication be obtained. In practice, the free gyro tends to drift off its set position and lose its accuracy. The Sperry-Sun Well Surveying Co. instrument (5M in O. D.) is of this free gyro type. It is counterbalanced, however, against the rotational effects of the earth, so that orientation of the spinning axis will be maintained throughout the survey.

The oxidation of pyritic sulphur associated with coal is important for the following reasons: 1. It is the predominant cause for the formation of acid mine drainage issuing from bituminous coal seams. This drainage pollutes the streams in coal regions, making the water unfit for industrial purposes and causing the disappearance of fish and wild life. As a consequence the movement of industry and especially recreational industry, so important to the population of these areas as an alternative means of livelihood, is impeded. 2. It is instrumental in effecting a series of reactions, which bring about the degradation and ultimately result in the spontaneous combustion of bituminous coal in storage. 3. It contributes to the breaking and shattering of the coal structure and is one of the causes of roof falls and floor lifts in mines. 4. It is the primary cause of the many nuisances associated with gob piles and the refuse of cleaning plants. 5. Its proper control and application might possibly be employed in the preparation of coal to reduce the inorganic sulphur content. The research that has been conducted on the oxidation of the various forms of iron sulphides is extensive and the literature voluminous. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to determine experimentally and with some precision the mechanism of the reaction under the conditions of its occurrence in bituminous coal mines. It has generally been accepted that the oxidation of pyritic sulphur proceeds according to the reaction 2FeS2 + 2H2O + 7O2 ? 2FeSO4 + 2H2SO4 [1] The ferrous sulphate in the drainage streams is further oxidized by air to produce ferric hydroxide and more acid. Yet the literature fails to disclose any pertinent investigation on the mechanism of this reaction. The present contribution is concerned primarily with this aspect of the problem and while the work to be reported is not yet complete, it has yielded results from which interesting and significant conclusions may be drawn.

The use of water-cooled breast-jackets or cinder-tap blocks is a great convenience in lead-smelting, even when siliceous slags are made. If the charges are at all basic it is almost imperative. Jackets of riveted wrought-iron or steel are expensive; those of cast-iron are liable to crack; those of bronze are costly and not durable, being easily penetrated by tapping-bars or destroyed by streams of matte impinging against them. To overcome these objections I introduced at the Hanauer works, in April, 1886, castjackets of steel, which have been in constant use since that time and are to-day as good as new. These jackets were made for us by the Chester Steel Castings Company, of Chester, Pa., at a cost of ten cents a pound at the works of that company. The metal is 5/8-inch thick, and the jackets were cored and tapped for l1/2-inch bushings, affording two large holes for the removal of dirt and incrustations. The same holes are used for feed- and discharge-water through 3/4-inch pipe. I hope the successful introduction here of cast-jackets of steel will lead to their more extended use in all branches of metallurgy where water-cooled surfaces are severely taxed, and where the size and thickness of the castings are not unfavorable to the production of a sound article, impervious to water and of high tensile strength.

Tests demonstrated that aqueous solutions of sodiu~n sulfide would dissolve over 95 pct of the cinnabal- in 5 pct Hg flrotation concentrates and 60 to 90 pct of the cinnabav in low-grade ol-es. Double-leach tests showed that potassiutn sulfide would dissolve 90 pct of the avsenic sulfide in Hg-As satnples and only 1 to 10 pct of the Hg; the sodium sulfide would then dissolve 80 to 90 pct of the rernaining Hg and 30 to 70 pct of the vemaining As. 1 HIS paper describes the extraction, by alkaline sulfide solutions, of mercury from cinnabar-bear ing ores and flotation concentrates. Leaching time and solution temperature had minor effects on mercury extraction when compared to the effects of reagent quantity and ore type and grade. Cinnabar, although readily soluble in sodium sulfide, was only partially soluble in potassium sulfide and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. A double leach process was developed to extract selectively the arsenic from Hg-As products with K2S and to treat the residue with sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions to extract the mercury.' Mercury was then recovered from the pregnant solutions either by precipitation with metallic aluminum or by electrodeposition. The solubility of HgS in alkaline sulfide solutions was first reported by Volhard in 1878.' The first reported commercial application was made in 1915 when Thornhill applied the method to the treatment of an amalgamation tailing.3 Mullhollen, in 1911. described the chemical reaction of HgS with Na,S and alkaline hydrate to be:4 Most investigators have reported using a 4-pct sodium sulfide and a 1-pct sodium hydroxide soluti~n.3-4 An increase in temperature or excessive dilution of the solution causes the reaction to be reversed. Church Holmes described a similar process used for the extraction of antimony from silver concentrates at the Sunshine Mining Company's mill at Kellogg. Idaho.5 More recently. Erspamer and Wells reported the results of leaching studies on a Hg-Sb ore from Alaska.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Leaching tests were made on samples of mercury ore from eight deposits in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In addition. tests were made on flotation concentrates from seven of the samples as well as a flotation concentrate from an operating mill. Since previous investigators reported reagent requirements greatly in excess of that required by the equation HgS + Na2S = HgS . Na2S, initial studies were made on chemically pure HgS. Results showed that the reaction actually required about 1 g of Na,S per g of HgS in an aqueous solution rather than 0.338 g of Na,S as indicated by the equation. To check further the matter of reagent requirements, Na2S and HgS were mixed together in equal mole ratios. Water was then added, a drop at a time, until the components reacted; X-ray diffraction analyses showed no HgS nor Na,S present. The yellow hydrate compound which formed would not redissolve until about three additional mole equivalents of Na,S were added to the solution. This indicated that a stable solution would require at least 4 moles of Na2S for each mole of HgS. While these implications may be valid for pure HgS, the possibility of entirely different results caused by the existence of other elements present in ores and concentrates was recognized. THE sinking of a new shaft at the Newport mine, Ironwood, Mich., was started in May 1931 and completed on Aug. 3, 1932. During this period, 2665 ft. of shaft in granite was completed, at an average advance of 6 ft. per 24 hr. In November of 1930, experimental work was con- ducted on 65 ft. of shaft through 22 ft. of overburden where ledge was encountered, and this work convinced the operators that all drilling could be done with vertical holes with the blasting relief to a 4%-in. hole drilled vertically in the center of the cut. The reason for not adopting the conventional V-cut was to get away from damaging the shaft steel. The blasting in a V-cut naturally tends to throw the broken material upward, but with the cut as adopted the relief was in a horizontal direction to a large extent. The scheme of mucking employed made it necessary to keep the steel shaft sets within 50 ft. of the bottom at all times. This could not be done without serious damage with a V-cut when blasting in granite. The cut as drilled also broke 10.83 ft. per round of drilling, which was considerably more than the experience with a V-cut in the same material. The extended cut reduced proportionately the delays for charging, blowing smoke and handling drilling equipment in the shaft. Another advantage was the ease in drilling vertical over inclined holes, and the preservation of the proper spacing of the drill holes at the bottom of the cut. DRILLING Air was carried down the shaft in an 8-in. flanged pipe line at a pres- sure ranging from 95 to 100 lb. This line was extended to within 100 ft. of the bottom, where a valve and a 4 by 4 by 6-ft. tee was connected to it. DURING the war, events moved with unprecedented rapidity. Situations, industrial, economic and financial, arose over night that stressed to the uttermost the ingenuity and ability of those who dealt with them. It was essentially a time demanding action rapid and concentrated, and not one for discussion, either academic or polemic. As a result, matters of importance were necessarily transacted without the desirable opportunity being afforded of enabling a general understanding to be gained as to the relative merit or demerit involved, and in some instances, legislation essential to enable the consummation of an important matter was passed without attracting the public attention then deeply engrossed in the larger aspects of the situation. The result was that so long as the public mind was occupied, little or no concern was given to questions that ordinarily would have invited immediate attention; and in some instances, only when as an aftermath of war a particular subject has become a matter of discussion, criticism not altogether fair is made without first obtaining accurate knowledge as to the conditions that prevailed, the purpose sought to be accomplished, or the results obtained by the action taken.

Continuous mining machinery provides the coal industry with one way to compete for a larger share of the total energy market. Various types of machines are discussed and some of the problems with continuous miners, encountered by operators, are reviewed. Equipment manufacturers are working with mine personnel to provide solutions for problems that arise. While coal production over the past 25 or 30 years has been on a horizontal plane, coal's share of the total energy market has declined. To participate more effectively in this total energy market, it is necessary to produce coal more efficiently. It is the obligation of all management, employes, and mining departments to gear the deep mining industry to the rapid progress and changing of today's modern industry. This can be accomplished in the near future with the selection of the proper type of continuous miner best suited to each operator's individual situation. In most mining operations there is tremendous incentive to undertake the continuous mining program. It can reduce the size of the mine greatly by permitting a minimum of working places; it makes pillar recovery work more efficient from the standpoint of overall cost, amount of coal recovered, and safety. The work force can be reduced materially permitting closer and more efficient supervision. It simplifies maintenance because equipment can be more readily standardized. The trend of the coal market favors the use of continuous mining machines. Although there appears to be a general feeling that continuous mining is still a relatively new program and will be slow in replacing conventional mechanical equipment, the fact is that tremendous strides have been made since the first machines were installed in 1948. This program is advancing at approximately the same rate that mobile loading machines replaced hand loading. From 1948 to 1955 there were approximately 450 continuous mining machines in service. In October 1959, a survey revealed that there were more than 700 continuous mining machines in service. Many operators have expressed a desire to undertake this program, but they feel that they could not do so at this time because of one or more of the following reasons: 1) the thickness of their coal seams, 2) seam characteristics, 3) soft bottoms, 4) bad roof conditions, 5) size consist, 6) insufficient flexibility in machines, 7) difficult ventilation problems, and 8) high maintenance costs. With the realization on coal about the same today as it was in 1948, or slightly less and since coal is still failing to participate to a greater degree in the total energy market, it is not surprising that the coal industry is desperately exploring more economical methods for deep mining. The manufacturers are aware that the coal industry is willing to invest in continuous miners if the equipment is built for maximum flexibility, will produce higher tons per man, and assure long life between overhaul programs. CONTINUOUS MINING MACHINES Before discussing details regarding the selection of a continuous miner, let us have a preview of some of the continuous mining machines which are available to the coal industry today. Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.: The machine shown is the Jeffrey 76 A.M. Colmol. This is their most widely used miner, and has been particularly successful in central Pennsylvania and in high-wall mining in western Kentucky. One of the outstanding features of this auger-type miner is its portability. The entire mining range can be changed from its lowest point to the maximum height without stopping the mining operation. Jeffrey 76 B.M. Colmol: This machine is similar to the 76 A.M. model; however, it is built bigger and stronger for a mining range of 50 1/2 to 72 in. This is the model that is now available (Fig. 2). Prior to Sept. 1, 1928, there had never been constructed what might be termed a long pipe line with electric-welded field joints. A year later more than 2500 miles of electric-welded lines had been completed which varied in diameter from 6 to 20 in., and in length from 50 to 700 miles. This paper discusses methods used on five lines with a total length of about 750 miles. The welding equipment used for the firing line or rolling welds, was 300-amp. generators driven with six-cylinder gasoline engines, and for the bell-hole or tie-in welds, 200-amp. generators driven by four-cylinder gasoline engines. A welding gang consisted of a foreman, 6 to 12 firing-line welders and 2 to 4 bell-hole welders, a mechanic and a tractor driver. Coupons about 1/4 in. thick were frequently cut from completed welds, which showed a cross-section of the weld and an indication of its size and penetration. For tests of tensile strength complete welds were cut out. The tensile strength of 52 welds cut from 420 miles of 12-in. line averaged 50,870 Ib. per square inch. The following results give a fair average of the number of welds made per man per day: on 157 miles of 8-in. line both firing-line and hell-hole welds averaged 15.3—the firing-line average was 21; on 39 miles of 10-in. line the firing-line average was 19.9; on 50 miles of 6-in. line, with unfavorable weather, the average was 17.7; on 424 miles of 12-in. line most of which was welded during the spring, 10.3, and with good weather the average rose to 13 welds per day. The average time for making a complete weld on 12-in. pipe 0.313 in. thick was found to be 30 min. for the rolling weld and 45 min. for tie-in welds. A comparison of costs between electric and gas welding shows that the cost of labor for electric welding is 25 per cent. more than gas, generating cost 61 per cent. less than gas, welding wire 40 per cent. less than gas, and supervision and overhead the same. Underground construction involves all the legal problems common to the construction industry and adds a nice little group of its own. Elements which will ultimately affect contractor-owner relationship commence to form almost as soon as the owner conceives of the project. A few of these with emphasis on their application to underground construction will be mentioned. (1) During the design stage, determination must be made as to whether the specifications will be general or restrictive. To what extent will the operations of the contractor be controlled? Can he proceed to use any method of tunnel excavation that he desires and only be responsible for the end result or will specific excavation procedures be required? Can explosives be used? Under what restrictions? Are tunnel supports required? How long can the crown behind the heading remain unsupported? What kind of supports are required? What restrictions on the placement of tunnel-lining concrete will be required? Each of you could extend this list for many pages but these illustrations are indicative of decisions that must be made in advance of bidding, and the ultimate decision on each question can have a significant effect on the legal relationships that exist between the contractor and the owner. The owner wants a good job at a fair price. On the other hand, nothing is worse than having a tunnel collapse during the construction period, with its extra costs, loss of life, and delay to the entire project. If the specifications are too restrictive, increased costs of performance are bound to occur. Owners save tremendous amounts of money by obtaining a contractor who has been ingenious in devising the most economical construction procedure. Care must be taken in drafting the specifications so that the benefits of such ingenuity will not be lost. (2) HOW is the contract to be awarded? Will there be open bidding, a restricted list of bidders, or will there be negotiations with a comparatively few contractors? If it is a government project, whether Federal, state, or
