Extraction of silica from the taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic range by high temperature digestion in caustic solutions has been described.1,2 The ores consist essentially of hematite, goethite, and microcrystalline quartz, detailed descriptions of which appear in the literature.1,3 It is the purpose of this communication to describe some results obtained from a laboratory investigation of an alternative method, that of sintering the ore with sodium carbonate followed by water extraction of the sodium silicate produced. This is analogous to the Deville-Péchiney4,5 soda ash sinter process for the production of alumina from bauxites in which soluble sodium aluminates are formed. Raw mixes of the desired composition were prepared from 10.0 g minus 200 mesh samples of taconite and sintered in nickel crucibles in a muffle furnace controlled to within ±10°F of the operating temperatures. The resulting sinters were pulverized and then leached in distilled water with continuous agitation for 30 minutes at 95°C. The suspensions were vacuum filtered and the residues dried, ignited and weighed. Iron assays on the ignited samples were made by the standard dichromate procedure after dissolution in hydrochloric acid. The percentage of extraction was calculated from the iron assays by the relation:

The surface structure and substructure of Al-Cu alloys solidified as conventional ingots and under particular conditions such as those used by Bower and Flemings are studied. The influence of lampblack coating on the mold walls is especially considered and the results compared with those obtained in copper and graphite molds where no coatings exist. When high heat extraction conditions exist the observations show that mechanism of copious nucleation is responsible for most of the chill zone. When the heat extraction through the mold walls is low, a coarse grain structure with dendritic morphology arises, with a size that depends on the degree of convection present, analogous to that analyzed by Bower and Flemings. In both cases the effect of the convection on the macroscopic and microscopic appearance is discussed. The ingot macrostructure consists of one or more of three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been subject of considerable interest and at present at least three theories exist about the formation of the equiaxed region: 1) the constitutional supercooling theory1 maintains that the equiaxed crystals nucleate after the columnar zone has formed, as a result of the constitutional supercooling of the remaining liquid; 2) chalmers2 pointed out, however, that there were several objections to this proposal, and that consideration should be given to the possibility that all the crystals, equiaxed as well as columnar, originated during the initial chilling of the liquid layer in contact with the mold; 3) Jackson et aL3 and O'Hara and ~iller~ suggested that a remelting mechanism of the dendrite arms is responsible for the formation of the equiaxed region. After the work of Cole and Bolling and other authors6 it became evident that convection (natural, reduced, or forced) plays a very important role in the transition from columnar to equiaxed and on the size of the resultant equiaxed structure. Until recently the accepted explanation of the chill zone was that it occurs as a result of copious nucleation in the liquid layer in contact with the mold walls.798 The columnar region is a subsequent result of the growth of favorably oriented grains and, as a result of a selection mechanism studied by Walton and Chalmers,9 elongated grains with marked texture are formed. Recently, however, Bower and Flemings" using an ingenious laboratory experiment introduced the idea that the "copious nucleation" mechanism is not responsible for the formation of the chill zone and that the presence of convection, introducing some form of "crystal multiplication", plays a decisive role in the formation of the chill zone. Unfortunately, it is important to consider that for their conclusions Bower and Flemings extrapolated the results obtained in their special experiments to the case of conventional ingots, and that these authors only analyzed the macrostructures of the specimens. Let us consider the work by Biloni and chalmers" concerning predendritic solidification. These authors were able to show that a study of the segregation substructure of A1-Cu gives information about the nucleation and growth of crystals formed in contact with a cold surface. A spherical predendritic region characterizes the first part of every grain nucleated in contact with the surface as a result of the chill effect. The aim of this paper is to elucidate through the observation of the segregation substructure the conditions under which (in the Bower and Flemings type of experiments and in conventional ingots) either the nucleation or the multiplication mechanism gives rise to the structure in contact with the mold walls. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The experiments were performed on two alloys: Al-1 wt pct Cu and A1-5 wt pct Cu. The purity of the aluminum was 99.99 pct and the copper 99.999 pct. The results obtained with both alloys were similar. In the Bower and Flemings type of experiments the apparatus employed to obtain rapid solidification against a surface was similar to that used by those authors. The liquid was drawn by partial vacuum into the thin section mold cavity. Plate casts were 5 cm wide and usually 7.5 cm high. The thicknesses of the cast were 0.1 and 0.3 cm. Two different materials were used for the mold, copper and nuclear-grade graphite. The internal mold surfaces were polished and left uncoated for some experiments. In other experiments, the copper or graphite surface was coated with a thin film of lampblack material. In some of these particular experiments one of the mold walls was left with an uncoated region (usually in the form of a cross). The conventional ingots were cast in graphite or copper molds. In different experiments the mold walls were sometimes uncoated or coated with lampblack material. The results obtained in conventional and Bower and Flemings copper molds were compared with those obtained with copper molds coated with a very thin film of graphite; the results obtained were essentially similar. The size of the conventional ingots was 5 cm diam and 7 cm high in all cases. The cast surfaces produced by the Bower and Flemings type of experiments and conventional methods were observed macroscopically and microscopically without any metallographic preparation. As Biloni and Chalmers showed," the observation of the chill surface can give considerable information about the structure and segregation substructure.

Vanadium is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal therefrom with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improrement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation. The flow stress-grain size relationship has been determined at room temperature in both a disordered and a fully ordered FeCo for plastic strains up to 30 pct. The results are in agreement with a Hall-Petch relation of the type given by Of =a,+kd-1/2 where of is the flour stress and a, increases mono-tonically with increasing strain to a maximum value which is much higher for the ordered than for the disordered alloy. The slope, k, is found to increase FOLLOWING the original work of Halll and petch relating the effect of grain size to the lower yield stress of iron and steel, it has been generally found that the yield stress oy.s. of polycrystalline metals with strain to a maximum and then decrease for both ordered and disordered alloys. However, k for the ordered alloy is in general higher than that for the disordered alloy and the critical strain for k max somewhat larger. All of these observations can be satisfactorily accounted for quantitatively and in some cases semiquantitatively by using a slip band-grain boundary intersection model, and by taking note of the fact that, in general, moss slip, while quite common in the disordered alloy, is extremely difficult in the ordered alloy. obeys a relation of the form oy.s.=a0+kd-1/2 [1] where a, and k are constants and d is the mean grain diameter. For convenience, and in accord with prevailing custom, Eq. [I] will be referred to simply as the Petch relation. Tjerkstra3 and Armstrong, Codd, Douthwaite, and petch4 showed that the flow stress af of iron or steel measured at strains of up to at least 20 pct also obeyed a relationship of the type given by Eq. (11. The latter investigators have also shown that Eq. [I] applies to fcc and hcp metals and alloys.

THE Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler1, the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North,2 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January,. 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 ½ miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were height, 750. ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.)

To assist the taxpayer of the oil and gas industry in correctly and expeditiously preparing his Federal tax returns, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has prepared a "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry Under the Revenue Act of 1918." Although the endeavor has been made to anticipate all questions that may be asked, it is recognized that such a manual is only general and cannot cover all cases that may exist. The Manual is based largely upon information gathered during the fall of the year 1918 by a corps of geologists, technologists, and engineers. The investigation was undertaken primarily to furnish a basis for arriving at valuations, and depletion and depreciation deductions in connection with oil and gas properties. All fields in the United States were canvassed. Records of production of thousands of properties were collected and tabulated. These were carefully classified and studied by the most competent and experienced men in the country and the average future production curves and tables of valuation data were produced as a result of this study. ROCK is no doubt the most abundant of all material things because the planet on which we live is made of it. All animal and vegetable organisms and the multitude of natural and manufactured products that occupy a comparatively insignificant film on the outer surface of the planet are derived from rock. Processes of Nature acting for untold centuries have transformed rock into soil, making possible the development of vegetable and annual life; and rocks have supplied the numerous raw materials, metallic and nonmetallic, wherewith the innumerable appurtenances of a complex civilization have been fabricated. As time goes on we live with increasing speed and with enlarged desires. Time and space are shortened by man's ingenuity, and products for human use must be manufactured with greater and greater celerity. It was inevitable that Nature's slow processes of rock alteration should fail to keep pace with human demands and that the variety of natural products should fall far short of the requirements of an industrial age. Man therefore supplemented these processes by attacking rock in its native bed amid using it to supply needs not otherwise satisfied.

THE production record of the Sinclair-Moren pool, in southeast Young County, Texas, demonstrates that under efficient operating methods a single well may obtain normal oil recovery from an area of 100 acres or more. This record is the more surprising in view of relatively adverse reservoir conditions such as lack of water drive, moderate initial reservoir pressures and a consolidated sandstone reservoir with original permeability greatly reduced by processes of lithification. This case history is considered worthy of special study in view of the ever present problem of proper spacing of wells. Cupidity, abetted by the unrestrained law of capture, has in too many instances guided development and production methods without regard for sound economic and engineering principles. Largely as a result of ill advised spacing of wells, many oil fields have brought financial losses instead of deserved profit to those using capital, time and energy in this important business of adequately meeting the petroleum requirements of what is known as our modern civilization. In March 1923, the Sinclair Oil and Gas Co. obtained initial daily production of about 12,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 1100 bbl. of oil in its first well near the center of a 372-acre lease on the L. P. Moren land, James Rose survey, Abstract 245. This exploratory test was drilled as a geological prospect of average promise, on a plunging anticline with possibly 10 ft. of closure as mapped on the outcropping limestone of upper Canyon (Pennsylvanian) age. In subsurface, the top of the producing res-ervoir is 16 ft. lower in this well than in the highest wells but probably 25 ft. above lowest closing contour. Wells No. 2 and 3 were drilled about 1/4 mile west and southwest near a normal fault with some 30 ft. of downthrow to the southwest. The producing sand was reached at a depth of 2512 ft. and drilled to 2529 ft. in the first well. This sandstone reservoir is of Millsap Lake (middle Strawn, upper Cherokee) age. It was absent in the second and third wells, which were abandoned at the depths of 3725 or more. In April 1925, a fourth well was drilled 600 ft. east and 24 ft. lower for top of sand than No. I. Production of about 100 bbl. daily was reported from 2521 to 2562 after an 80-quart shot. This well was drilled to 4560 ft., plugged back to 2575 and shot again; but was abandoned soon thereafter because of small production.

The Mg-Zr alloy ZA and Mg-Mn alloy AM503(S) are shown to have a markedly improved resistance to creep deformation after suitable heat treatments. This improvement makes them suitable for certain stress-bearing fuel element components in nuclear reactors. The extent of strengthening is described and an explanation of the behavior of both materials is given, based on a combination of strain-aging and grain growth. The increase in operating temperatures of fuel element components in Calder Hall type nuclear reactors has necessitated the development of magnesium base alloys with a very high resistance to creep at temperatures up to 500°C. Such alloys are not required for fuel element cans, which require high-creep ductility rather than strength, but for can supporting and stabilizing components, which are needed to support the imposed loads without deforming more than about 1 pct in times of up to 40,000 hr. The amount and type of alloying addition made to magnesium for these parts is limited by the necessity of keeping the cross-section to thermal neutrons as low as possible. The alloys must also possess a high resistance to oxidation in CO2. Alloys which have been developed for this application include ZA, an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.7 pct Zr and AM503(S), an alloy of magnesium with 0.5 to 0.75 pct Mn. In the as-extruded condition these alloys are very weak and ductile in creep but it has been found that they can be strengthened to a significant extent by heat treatment. This paper describes the method of developing a high-creep resistance in ZA and AM503(S), the extent of the strengthening produced and discusses the probable mechanisms of strengthening. TEST MATERIALS Specimens were taken from typical casts of ZA and AM503(S) alloys extruded into 2 1/4-in.-diam bars, supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd. Typical analyses of the bars were as follows: The as-extruded mean grain diameter was 0.001 to 0.002 in. for the ZA alloy and 0.003 in. for the AM503(S) alloy. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Extruded bars of ZA alloy, 2 1/4 in. in diameter and 9 in. long, were heat treated in electrical resistance furnaces in an atmosphere of flowing CO2 containing 50 to 300 ppm water, thereby reducing the extent of oxidation compared with that which would have occurred in air. Heat treatments were carried out at 600oc for times of 8, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr and material was subsequently both furnace cooled and water quenched. In order to measure the effect of time of heat treatment, specimens were creep tested at 400°C and 336 psi for about 1000 hr. Subsequently, the behavior of material heat treated for 96 hr at 600°C and furnace cooled was tested at a variety of stresses from 200° to 500°C. Tests were also conducted at 200o and 400°C on material in the as-extruded condition for comparative purposes. With the AM503(S) alloy, only the effect of heat treatment at 565°C for 4 hr was examined. It has been shown1 that such a heat treatment produces marked strengthening in this alloy. Tests on this material were conducted at a variety of stresses at 200°, 300°, and 400oc with comparative tests on as-extruded material at 200o and 400°C. The creep tests were carried out on machines using dead-weight loading and direct micrometer strain measurements on specimens 5 in. long and 0.357 in. diameter. At temperatures of 400° C and below, the creep tests were conducted in air, but at higher temperatures an atmosphere of CO2 was used. Grain size measurements were made on ZA in the extruded and heat treated states and on each specimen after creep testing. This was done by a line count of a minimum of 20 grains in two or three random fields in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The same method was used for measuring the grain size of as-extruded AM503(S), but the grain size of the heat treated material was so large that this method could not be employed. For heat-treated AM503(S) the large grained characteristics (between 0.1 and 1 in.) were confirmed by the measurement of individual grains. In the case of the ZA alloy, specimens taken from various stages in the program were analysed for hydrogen by a combustion method. Material in various states was also analysed for the soluble and insoluble zirconium content by dissolving in dilute hydrochloric acid. Chlorination of the various constituents of ilmenite by different chlorinating agents in presence of various reducing agents, have been considered on the basis of the standard free energy and standard enthalpy changes as a function of temperature. The standard free energy change considerations show that it is beneficial to chlorinate ilmenite by chlorine in the presence of carbon and also that iron constituent of ilmenite can be preferentially chlorinated by clzlorine, titanium tetrachloride or their mixture. These findilzgs have been corroborated from the published work. METALLURGICAL processes involving the use of titanium tetrachloride have gained in importance because of the use of the latter in the manufacture of titanium metal. Since ilmenite is more abundant in nature than any other titanium mineral, the future of the metallurgical processes depends on the utilization of ilmenite for the production of titanium tetrachloride. In these laboratories, investigations have been carried out on the chlorination of ilmenite under a variety of conditions.1'2 During these studies, it was noticed that 1) preferential chlorination of iron was effected at low temperatures (400° to 600°C) and at low carbon content (6 to 7 pct), 2) carbonyl chloride retarded the chlorination of iron oxides and titania perceptibly, while 3) carbon-tetrachloride, compounds of sulphur and some other catalysts favored the chlorination. Moles3 has found that oxides of iron are chlorinated in preference to titania at high temperatures, while wilcox4 has claimed the preferential chlorination of titania between 1200" and 1500°C. It has been shown in this paper that preferential chlorination of titania claimed by Wilcox is not likely to occur. Daubenspeck and coworkers5,6 have claimed the preferential chlorination of iron by chlorine or by a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and chlorine between 700° and 1050°C in the absence of carbon. Even when plain titanium tetrachloride is employed as the chlorinating agent, pascaud7 noticed the preferential chlorination of iron and other oxides. The purpose of this paper is to explain from thermodynamical considerations, the various chlorination reactions studied so far. ILMENITE CONSTITUENTS AND THEIR CHLORINATION PRODUCTS Although the general composition of the ilmenite mineral is represented as FeTiO,, most of the ilmenites found in nature have variable quantities of TiO2 (44.6 to 64 pct), FeO (4.7 to 36 pct) and Fe2O3 (6.9 to 28 pct).8 The higher content of ferric iron in ilmenites was attributed by Millerg to the presence of arizonite (Fe2O3.3TiO2). But the X-ray studies by Overholt, Vaw, and odd" have shown that arizonite is a mixture of haematite, ilmenite, anatase, and rutile. Except for the anatase, similar views have been advanced by Lynd, Sigurdson, North, and Anderson8 from magnetic, X-ray, and optical and electron microscope studies. The ilmenite ores can, therefore, be assumed to consist of mineral aggregates of ilmenite, rutile and haematite. From the free energy of formation of ilmenite (FeTiO3), it has been shown by Kelley, Todd, and King11 that ilmenite is stable even up to its melting point (1367°C) and would not undergo decomposition into its constituent oxides. Schomate, Naylor, and Boericke12 have found that in the presence of a reducing agent the iron constituent of ilmenite is selectively reduced. The reaction of chlorine with ilmenite in presence of a reducing agent can, therefore, be synonymous with that of the reaction of chlorine with the constituents of ilmenite, viz., TiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3. Most of the reaction products of chlorination of ilmenite in the presence of reducing agents will be in equilibrium with their dissociation products, depending on the temperature. The titanium tetrachloride is, however, quite stable up to 1500°C due to its covalent nature. The equilibrium for the ferric chloride system has been investigated by Kangro and Bernstorff, 13, schafer14 and Kangro and petersen,15 and the results are summarized in Fig. 1, curves a, b, and c respectively. From these results, it is clear that the ferric chloride disociates as follows: 324° to 700°C FeaCl6(g) ?2FeCl2(c) + Cl2(g) [1] 324°to 900°C Fe2Cl6(g) =2 Fe Cl2 Reaction [I] (curve a) occurs in the forward direction to about 6 pct at 400°C but falls off very rapidly with increase in temperature and beyond 600°C, it is practically negligible, perhaps due to the formation of the stable monomer, FeC13(g). STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.

A systematic study has been made of the application of the real gas pseudo-pressure m(p) to short-time gas well testing. The m(p) function can be used in real gas flow problems to account for the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. A mathematical model was solved numerically to generate solutions of various real gas flow problems. The effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage were included in the model. The analysis of simulated well tests showed that the interpretation methods normally used for liquid flow are generally accurate when the m(p) is used. For practical rates without turbulence, the solutions are not rate-sensifive, and the flow capacity.. kh and skin effect can be determined accurately from either a buildup or a drawdown test. However, the kh calculated from a drawdown test can be significantly low when turbulence is present. A case was simulated in which this error wa.s 36 percent. Turbulence does not affect the determination of kh from buildup tests. The proper determination of kh from p and pa buildup and drawdown plots is developed by analyzing their relationship to the m(p) method. A simple equation is given that can be used for long-range gas well performance forecasting. This expression is compared with a method pre-sended by Russell et al." Introduction The formation flow capacity and wellbore damage condition can be determined for liquid-producing tests by means of buildup and drawdown tests. These tests make use of short-time pressure transient data rather than stabilized flow tests that are often used for gas well testing. Tracy' presented a method of gas well testing that was based on ideal gas equations and utilized p2 buildup plots. This method was shown to be good for low pressure wells. MatthewsZ suggested plotting p and using an average slope and average gas properties. This method was more successful on high pressure wells. Al-Hussainy, Ramey and Crawfordh howed that variation in gas properties could be simplified by using the real gas pseu do-pressure m(p). Because the work of Al-Hussainy et al. included only a few actual cases, there was a need to explore the use of the m(p) method for a greater variety of flow conditions. The occurrence of turbulent flow around the wellbore often is an important factor in gas well testing. Swift and Kiel,' and Carter et a1.' treated turbulence in gas well testing, but did not consider the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of the m(p) method to buildup and drawdown testing. Vhe investigation included the effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage. Gas Flow Equations To formulate the mathematical model, many of the assumptions usually used in well testing theory are applied. The system has radial geometry with a closed outer boundary and is composed of a horizontal porous formation that has uniform and isotropic rock properties and uniform thickness. Allowance is made, however, for a radial region of reduced permeability near the wellbore. This region represents formation damage. The geometry of the system is shown in Fig. 1. Darcy's law does not always apply to gas flow. MOST important of the various departments of a custom smelter, so far as the financial welfare of the plant and the confidence of shippers are concerned, is that responsible for correct weights, accurate moisture sampling, and the obtaining of control samples that are strictly representative of the lot of ore from which they come. Treatment rate schedules are based on the metal content of ores received, reduced to dry weight. These rates must be low enough to keep the ship- per from taking his business else- where and still must allow the smelter a profit. Assay results, likewise, must satisfy the shipper, but if they show too high a metal content for the ore they represent, the smelter will actually lose money. It is always considered, and constant checks through umpire assays prove, that laboratory results are closely correct, so the bur- den of the plant profit and loss and the satisfaction of the shipper rest squarely upon the sampling department.

IN 1939, at the request of The Koppers Coal Co., the Koppers Company Research Department established a Stoker Coal Research Laboratory for the purpose of investigating the performance characteristics of stoker coals in typical domestic stoker installations. Fig. I is a photograph of part of the laboratory. The material in this paper deals with the performance of one coal in a single installation. Presented are details of this installation, mechanical characteristics of the stoker, and the results of a series of burning tests in which adjustments were systematically varied. SUMMARY OF RESULTS Mechanical Features I. A large percentage of the total power consumed by a domestic stoker is used to operate the gear case and motor (Fig. 3). 2. The power consumption per ton goes down with an increase in rate of coal feed (Fig. 4). 3. The automatic air control in this stoker showed advantages over manual control (Fig. 5). 4. The air velocities through the retort tuyeres were uniform around the retort, but varied between the rows of tuyere rings (Fig. 6). 5. The crushing of coal with this stoker increased the minus 1/8-in. from 1 1.6 per cent to 19.2 per cent. There was a noticeable segregation of coal as it came from the retort and distribution was not uniform (Fig. 7). 6. Measurement of air entering over the fire showed that with some not uncommon adjustments this air may he a high percentage of the total air supply (Fig. 8 and Table I). Operating Performance I. The removal of clinker was shown to give a period of poor performance characterized by a high fuel-bed resistance and a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the flue gases (Fig. 10). 2. The fuel-bed resistance was found to decrease as the fuel bed built up in a normal response to heat demand after a prolonged hold-fire (Fig. II). 3. With intermittent operation the burning rate was almost always less than the feeding rate. The wide variations were found to be greatly dependent upon the length of the On period and the length of the intervals between On periods (Fig. 12). 4. The maintenance of a low furnace draft led to less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. I3). 5. The maintenance of a minimum of excess air also resulted in less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 14). BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3''* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. One approach towards increasing plant production capacity to meet the growing demand is through large-capacity flotation cells, provided they achieve metallurgical performance comparable to existing smaller cells. A 9-month evaluation test program recently completed at the Haynsworth mine at Bradley, Fla., demonstrated the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels using large, high-capacity flotation cells. The composition of the feed to the Haynsworth beneficiation plant is a typical Florida pebble phosphate matrix composed of phosphorite pebbles ranging in size from approximately 1-1/2 in. down to 150 mesh and intimately associated with a mixture of clay and sand (essentially silica). The feed contains approximately 22 to 28% phosphate reporting as tricalcium phosphate, Ca3 (PO,) 2, or "bone phosphate of lime" (BPL). The flotation section utilizes the double-float procedure typical of Florida plants. The phosphate is first floated away from the silica in the rougher circuit, using crude fatty acid, ammonia, and fuel oil or kerosene. Rougher conditioning is accomplished at 60 to 70% pulp solids with sufficient ammonia added to raise the pH to 9 to 9.5. Following coarse and fine rougher flotation, the concentrate (overflow) streams are joined and conditioned (sulfuric acid cleaned and washed) prior to entering the cleaner circuit where an amine float (cationic reagent and kerosene added in the feed box; pH 7.3 to 7.8) is employed to float the silica. The feed to the coarse rougher circuit averages 29% +35 mesh while the fine rougher feed averages 10%+35 mesh. Primary attention was directed toward the large rougher cell performance (recovery and grade) on coarse feed during the Haynsworth evaluation program. Flotation Cell Test Program A row of three No. 120 size (300 cu ft) WEMCO flotation cells was installed in parallel with an existing air-cell row. The total installed volume of the large cell circuit was 900 cu ft and required a floor space of 306 sq ft. This compared to the air-cell total volume of 200 cu ft and 152 sq ft floor space. (Both floor areas include feed and tails hoppers but exclude walkways.) Fig. 1 is a schematic cross section of the large flotation cell showing the relative location of key mechanism elements. In operation, the rotor generates a fluid vortex extending up along the walls of the standpipe and creating a sufficient vacuum within its core to ingest air into the standpipe/rotor cavity through the air inlet duct. The ingested air mixes with the pulp, which has been recirculated through the false bottom and draft tube, in the rotor. Further mixing occurs as the air and pulp move radially outward from the rotor, finally passing through the disperser into the flotation cell. Flotation is accomplished outside the disperser, where phosphorite laden air bubbles rise and the remaining pulp recirculates down along the cell wall to the false bottom and draft tube. Large-flotation-cell performance is influenced by the ability of the mechanism to (1) circulate, or suspend, the solids in the pulp; (2) ingest air into the rotor cavity; and (3) mix the air and pulp effectively. The proper balance between pulp circulation and air ingestion is a key consideration in achieving good recovery in a course feed application. Large-flotation-cell pulp circulation and air transfer characteristics are significantly influenced by rotor speed and rotor submergence; therefore, these two operational parameters can be used to "optimize" a particular mill application. Fig. 2 maps the hydraulic performance of the WEMCO No. 120 size flotation cell. This map can be used to relate the cell operational parameters which influence metallurgical performance. At a given rotor speed, power intensity (i.e., pulp circulation) is seen to increase, and airflow decrease, as rotor submergence is increased. The inverse relation between power and airflow is due to the two-phase air-liquid mixture density reduction accompanying the increased airflow rate. For any fixed rotor submergence, the power intensity (i.e., fluid circulation) and airflow both increase as rotor speed is increased. The selection of these two mutually related operating conditions (i.e., rotor speed and submergence) was a key consideration in the Haynsworth evaluation program.
