The President's Prizes, which consist of $30 and $20, were established for the best essays on some subject related to Mining, Economic Geology, or Metallurgy by a Junior Associate or a Member of an Affiliated Student Society of the Institute. In making the awards, special weight will be given to originality in investigation and treatment and to literary merit. As a general rule, the essays should not be less than 3000 nor more than 10,000 words.

A meeting of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, in joint session with the American Electrochemical Society, was held at the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, Nov. 20, 1913. Mr. Lawrence Addicks, Chairman of the American Electrochemical Society, presided at the meeting, in conjunction with Mr. Louis D. Huntoon, Chairman of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Chairman announced the subject to be discussed it the meeting as follows: As this is a joint meeting of the New York Sections of the Electro-chemical Society and the Institute, Mr. Huntoon has insisted that I share the responsibilities of the chair to the extent of introducing the speakers.

Delay in classifying the war minerals claims geographically and by minerals' has resulted because a part of the claims is in the hands of the commission which is holding hearings at points easy of access from the mining districts. It was necessary for the commission to take many claims for use at these hearings. Twenty days will be allowed claimants to file typewritten or printed briefs based on the record made by the commission's findings. At the end of twenty days, the case will be finally submitted to the Secretary of the Interior. No new facts will be considered, those which have been submitted to the commission only being given consideration. The Attorney General has issued a decision whereby only such claimants as were directly requested by the government to start operations will receive consideration under the War Minerals Act.

The American Mining Congress is a trade association rather than a technical society and as such does not issue scientific papers. Aside from the articles appearing in the monthly Mining Congress Journal, and the Proceedings of the Annual Meetings, only two works have been issued. Members of the staff of the Department of Geology of the University have published many papers which have appeared in print from various sources

Notice is hereby given that all members whose dues are paid for the year 1917 will be supplied with a copy of the Volumes MV and LV. Volume LVI has been delayed by the fact that our printer, like almost every other industrial society, has taken up war work and is under great pressure in addition thereto. Volume LVI will be sent before the end of the year, to members whose dues for the year 1917 are paid.

Plans for a multi-million dollar uranium mill in southeastern Utah were confirmed by Vanadium Corp. of America officials. Atomic Energy Commission has been dickering with two private firma for mill construction at Hite, Utah and Shiprock, N. Mex. Colorado Fuel & Iron has contracted to purchase all manufacturing business, plants and inventories of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., through a wholly owned subsidiary. CF&I currently the nation's ninth largest steel producer, will operate the new subsidiary under the Roebling name.
