The greatest single obstacle in the path of constructive action in making conservation a reality is the inherent discord in the hearts of men. A perfect society doubtless is many millenniums removed from the present generation, but it must be admitted that progress toward a conservative use of our natural heritage with the altruistic concept of the greatest good for the greatest number for the greatest time can be attained only by a society in which discord is reduced to a minimum compatible with the limitations of human nature. Daily industrial discord is witnessed between management and labor which passes the bounds of arbitration and results in stoppages of production, waste of productive capacity, idle capital, idle labor, and the complete loss of the most unrecoverable element of all-time. The conservation of material things cannot progress independently of the conservation of the efforts of the human worker, and the results of these efforts are proportional to life itself as measured in hours and years. Unfortunately discord passes international boundaries, and the story of war is as old as the story of mankind. Our recent attempts of international control of nations appear to be dismal failures. IN Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting, Mr. Bell gives the weight of materials required to fill furnaces of various sizes at the Clarence Works ; as this differs very much from the weight required for furnaces at Glendon, where anthracite and magnetic and brown iron-ores are used, a comparison is interesting. Taking furnaces at Glendon of 4800 and 11,900 cubic feet capacity and comparing them with the Clarence furnaces of 6000 cubic feet and 11,500 cubic feet, we find that the 4800 cubic feet at Glendon and the 6000 cubic feet at Clarence required respectively-

EDWIN LUDLOW, president of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers for the year beginning Feb. 15, 1921, is a well-known figure in the state that was the birthplace of the Institute-Pennsylvania-although he was born and educated in New York and is again one of its residents, after years of active work in the field. Mr. Ludlow was born at Oakdale, Long Island, and was graduated from the School of Mines at Columbia University with the class of 1879. After graduation, he became a civilian worker with the U. S. Engineer Corps under General William Ludlow, his brother, and for two years did river and harbor surveying along the New Jersey coast.

In general, many problems relating to the exploitation of mineral deposits are probabilistic in nature. This derives from the fact that the geologic universe is inherently random. Probability theory and statistics have been found useful for forecasting the behavior of natural events that occur in the geologic universe. The objective of this paper is to outline the application of the theory of extremes to this forecasting problem. Consider the design of an underground structure or the design of a rock slope. The initial step is the formulation of the various possible structural actions which result from the geometry of the layout. For a given structural model, various intensities of behavior are possible depending upon the load, deformation, and material characteristic spectra, respectively. Of popular interest to mining people is the failure behavior or condition. A necessary feature of the analysis is the rupture strength of the material. Information on the rupture strength is derived from testing either in situ or in the laboratory and the usual outcome is a variation in the test results. This variation is overcome by constructing a frequency distribution of rupture strengths, and then determining a measure of central tendency and variability. The main feature of interest in the analysis is the failure characteristic and its percentage chance of occurrence. Hence, one is naturally led to examine those areas of a distribution curve which are termed the tails. The statistical concepts which can most efficiently handle such areas are contained within extreme value statistics.

If there is one thing that makes a fellow feel like the years are catching up with him, it is to go through a second cycle in which the adequacy of mineral resources is being "viewed with alarm." The first time we experienced such a flap was in 1951. At that time, the United Nations convened a meeting at Lake Success to study ways and means of averting a crisis in minerals. Presently there is some sentiment being expressed about the mineral scarcities that will occur in the decades ahead, in view of world population trends and increasing per capita consumption of metals. To be greatly concerned about the adequacy of metal supplies is to be highly pessimistic about the capabilities of technology. As in the past, shortages will be of temporary duration for as far ahead as the most ambitious prognosticators are projecting. The study of mineral economics is a fascinating and surprising subject. The law of supply and demand is but a starting point. The iron ore market for the steel industry is an example which comes to mind because of our receipt this week of the United Nations report "Survey of World Iron Ore Resources."

Successful preliminary experiments at the University of North Carolina indicate that computers can provide speedy, accurate identification of the mineral content of rock samples. In just two minutes, the University's Univac 1105 computer solves the complex equations that would often require more than four hours using conventional methods. In addition, the computer is frequently spotting minerals that a geologist might miss simply because he wasn't looking for them.

Experiments on the Rate of Heat Transfer from a Hot Gas' to a Cooler Metallic Surface Members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will be much interested in the subject of teat transfer from a hot gas to a cooler metallic surface, and although the book on this subject recently published by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., of New York, deals primarily with boilers, it contains a great deal of information which metallurgical engineers will find of great value. The book starts out with an introduction giving some of the current theories regarding this subject; it then describes in detail the experimental apparatus used, and the methods of conducting the experiment's and recording the data. Then follow some account of the determination of radiation losses in jackets and cooler; measurement of metal temperatures; detection and correction of errors; etc., concluding with a discussion of the results and derivation of corrective formula for heat absorption; heat pressure rate and specific heat of gas.

CIRCULAR steel sets have proved to be more economical for supporting slusher drifts in the block-caving mining used by the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz. The first steel sets were installed in July 1950, and up to July 1, 1951, about 474 sets (approximately 1896 ft of drift) were placed; the bulk of this work was done in the latter six months. All of the places selected for the steel were in heavy ground. Based on this experience the following definite conclusions can be drawn:

The core recorder, a mechanical instr-ent for determining the exact depth at which core is recovered, drilled up or lost, is described. Examples of charts from the recorder are explained and interpreted. The uses of the core recorder are discussed. INTRODUCTION In the experience of geologists and engineers during coring operations on drilling wells, many will recall the times when a full core was not recovered and particularly when the requirement was urgent that they know exactly what part of the core was lost. To make this determination, the core recorder was designed. Its uses are many, and only the most obvious will be presented here. Although this discussion will be limited to drilling wells for petroleum, the core recorder can be used in any type of coring operation. The principle of the core recorder is the proportional reduction of the motion of core entering or dropping out of the core barrel to a stylus moving in such a manner as to record the reduced motion on a chart. The time element is registered on the same chart by the revolution of a clock which turns the chart drum. Thus the exact amount of core entering or dropping out of the core barrel is charted and the time of such entry or exit from the core barrel is precisely correlated to the depth at which the core is recovered or lost. Lack of movement of the stylus which is revealed by the continued revolution of the chart drum indicates that no core is entering the barrel. The principles are accomplished by an instrument placed inside of the core barrel. A cylinder which contains the clock and mechanical apparatus has a diameter smaller than that of the core barrel. Near the top of the cylinder is an eighteen hour clock which turns the drum that contains the chart. Near the bottom of the instrument is a serrated wheel which by friction against the inside of the core barrel is turned as core enters or drops out of the barrel.

The Institute makes liberal provision for inclusion of engineering students through individual Student Associate membership. Such members pay $2 per year, receive MINING AND METALLURGY, may purchase Technical Publications at reduced rates, have the privilege of attending all meetings and are furnished a distinctive badge in the form of a watch fob. Provision is also made for the affiliation of organized student societies in recognized schools of engineering chemistry, geology and related sciences. In order to qualify for affiliation it is not necessary that all members of the society become Student Associates since the individual members of the society are not listed as members of the Institute However, a large majority of the members of many of the societies are also Student Associate Members of the Institute. Among the things that the Institute does for the affiliated societies are the following: (a) A copy of each issue of MINING AND METALLURGY is furnished to the society; (b) Reports of the meetings and activities of the society are reported in MINING AND METALLURGY; (c) Assistance is given by the Institute in obtaining speakers for the meetings of the society; (d) The name of the society and of its officers is listed in the annual Directory and other publications of the Institute; and (e) Members of the society are given the use of the Engineering Societies Employment Service. Student organizations, desiring to be recognized as affiliated student societies of the Institute, should make application to the Secretary, giving particulars as to the nature of their organization, of their membership, and their officers. The accom¬panying list on page 24 gives the names of the affiliated student societies, their presi¬dents and their secretaries, as of April 17, 1931.

THE law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high, prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineer-. in- arts embraced by it through inter¬change of knowledge. This can best be clone by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short " practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that Will be a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper fre¬quently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication con¬tributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following sugges¬tions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. SUBJECTS: The subject must be within the field of the Institute.
