In 1911, we published in the Transactions a brief account of the lateritic alterations of serpentine in eastern Cuba, producing the important iron-ore deposits of the Mayari and Moa districts.' The special feature of that article was a quantitative treatment of the alterations, based on analyses, to show just what had happened in terms of chemical, mineralogical, and physical changes. Professor Kemp has published an interesting account of these ores, containing additional quantitative observations of his own, tending essentially to confirm the nature of the changes that had been worked out.2 His discussion suggests to us the desirability of publishing certain additional quantitative data which were not included in our previous article. This seems especially desirable because quantitative measurements of lateritic alterations are rare, and this particular case may be regarded as typical of a fairly wide range of alterations of this kind. At the time of our examination of Mayari and Moa deposits 29 complete analyses were supplied us by the chemists of the Spanish-American Iron, Co., representing a graded series from the unaltered serpentine rock below to the ore at the surface. These analyses are given in the accompanying table. The mineralogical composition of the ores and rocks is comparatively simple and can be easily calculated from the analyses. In Fig. 1 the mineralogical changes from the serpentine rock below to the lateritic iron ore above, based on the analyses, are expressed in terms of weight, assuming alumina to have remained constant during the alteration. It is not easy by mere inspection of this table of analyses to determine what the progressive chemical changes have been in development of the ore. In order to bring this out clearly, the analyses have been graphically represented in Fig. 2 in such a fashion as to show the progressive additions and losses of substances during alteration.

EXPERIMENTAL work on the concentration and agglomeration of low-grade iron ores was started many years ago at the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota by E. W. Davis and his staff. From these laboratory results and the work of 0. G. Lellep, consultant for the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., there were indications that the use of a downdraft continuous- grate furnace, patterned from a conventional-type sintering machine, would be practical. Consequently, a pilot plant was designed and constructed by the joint efforts of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. and Arthur G. McKee & Co. at Carrollville, Wis. Several years of work resulted in plans to build a large-scale pilot plant for commercial application. Such a pilot plant, built at Babbitt, Minn., by the Reserve Mining Co., was designed to produce 1000 tpd. Sufficient metallurgical and operating data were accumulated to permit the successful application to the design of a commercial plant of any desired capacity. Based upon this data, a pelletizing plant having a 3 ¾ million ton per year capacity was erected by the Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, Minn. and started operation in October, 1955. Provisions were made in the design to permit future expansion to a capacity of 10 million tons per year.

IN speaking of immaterial problems of industry I am using the word immaterial in its original sense, not consisting of matter; not in its derived sense, unimportant. There is nothing of a paradox in saying that immaterial problems are the most important in human life, for His a matter of everyday observation that much of the news in the daily papers, and most of the world's best literature and drama, deal with human conduct that has for its motive forces that are but little concerned with material things. The engineer's preoccupation with physical forces, in extending his control over them, has not blinded him to the impor-tance of forces that, for want of a better word, I call immaterial; but he has considered that dealing with the one is his job and the other is not. All the evidence of the past decade indicates that the latter are so in-extricably interwoven with the former in modern in-dustrial life that the engineer will have to concern himself with them whether he wants to or not. Some of the most important of the problems arising from the action of these forces relate to the mental hygiene of the workers in industry. Mental hygiene in industry was concisely defined, in terms of the best present knowledge, by Dr. C. Macfie Campbell, speaking last April before the executive com-mittee of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, and as his statement can scarcely be bettered, I quote it below: "The term mental hygiene is apt to appear vague. The actual stuff with which mental hygiene deals may be briefly reviewed.

IN 1955, before planning an accelerated stripping program, Chino Mines Div. began an engineering study to improve data for estimating truck haulage costs for any future haulage layout. The study aimed to develop: 1) significant unit costs, 2) a method of estimating travel time from which truck needs and future stripping rate could be determined, and 3) yardsticks of performance to measure haulage efficiencies. It was suggested that to provide significant unit costs, expense accounts should offer management two types of cost control information-unit cost yardsticks with which monthly unit costs could be compared and unit costs for estimating future expenses for any haulage layout.

Burma has long been known for its ruby, tungsten, and tin deposits, and, lately, for having the largest lead-zinc mine in the world, the Bawd-win mine of the Burma Corpn. All the coal used, however, is imported from Calcutta; this is a bituminous coal of about 11,000 B.t.u., 24 per cent. ash, and costs about $8 per ton. Bituminous coal has not, thus far, been found, but many lignite deposits are known. The most promising lignite deposits are in the Namma field, Fig. 1, situated in the Northern Shan States of Upper Burma, about 30 mi. south of Lashio, the terminus of the Burma Railway, 750 mi. north of Rangoon. TWO YEARS after its organization, the Institute issued its first volume of TRANSACTIONS, covering activities that began in May, 1871, and continued through February, 1873. The preface of this first volume reads: The present volume contains the rules of the Institute, a list of members and associates, an abstract of the proceedings of the-first two years, and a number of papers selected from those proceedings. There is, therefore, nothing new in it. The papers have all been published, according to the custom of the Institute, in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and many of them have been copied into other periodicals. They are republished here, solely to enable members and associates to preserve them in convenient form. Various considerations have determined the selection of papers for this purpose. Some have been omitted at the request of the authors who, having modified the views expressed in them, naturally deprecated a republication of those views. Others have been omitted, in order not to devote too large a proportion of space to single topics, or single branches of mining or metal¬lurgy, in view of the fact that the membership of the Institute extends throughout the whole country, and represents numerous departments of these industries. Some, on the other hand, have been chosen, although not laying claim to special originality, because they contained information of importance, not easily accessible elsewhere, the presentation of which, in a form convenient for reference, was generally desired.

DURING 1937 the subject of mining geology was probably given more attention and more mining geologists were usefully employed than at any previous time. Of the many contributing factors the most important were: (1) a higher degree of prosperity in many countries, (2) a. better understanding of geologic phenomena, and (3) the apparently diminishing reserves of several important minerals. Mining companies have come to look upon geology with a growing appreciation of its aid in the more effective exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits. Most of the larger and more active companies have one or more geologists permanently attached to their staffs and some have well organized and efficiently managed geological departments. Even the smaller companies, who feel they cannot afford to employ a geologist on a permanent basis, are seeking the advice of competent men in this field with increasing frequency. One of the most significant trends has been the growing tendency to base exploratory work on more thorough geologic studies instead of empirical "hunches,"on which so much off the work in the past has relied. Likewise, mining companies are apparently more willing to expend larger sums on the basis of geologic possibilities in a district.

The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. Anson G. Betts, Asheville, N. C.—1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. I?. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls has not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall. Detailed analysis is given of the influence of water on the strength of limestone. The mechanism involved in strength reduction is described. Such analysis is of importance in geological, civil, constructional, mining, and metallurgical engineering and is closely associated with the rock mechanics involved in these areas. Mine dumping, slope stability, excavations, sedimentation, etc., are very much affected by the presence of water. Tensile stresses, which have an important role in the development and propagation of fissures, are produced by water in cracks. The development of fissures can be responsible over a long period of time for an ultimate, catastrophic failure.

Abstract-The Swirl Cyclone developed in Japan, although based upon the same principles as the standard cyclones for heavy-media or water-only cyclones for cleaning coal, is novel in that it is invested with the apex on top, discharging rejects at the top, and clean coal at the bottom. It also uses a variable air vent tube for controlling the vortex. Tests conducted indicate that its efficiency is not only as sharp as standard cyclones but it also performs using a much coarser grain magnetite, promising higher magnetite recovery. The author describes the results of tests conducted in Japan on a very difficult coal.

It is well known that under certain conditions ammonia is found in the gas produced by the distillation of coal. Until recently it was held, and many still believe, that this ammonia exists in the coal, and is a natural product of the destructive distillation, varying in percentage, like the other products, according to the nature of the coal, but not formed synthetically beyond that limit. This opinion is in contradiction with well-established facts concerning the formation of ammonia from the elements of the coal. If any ammonia exists as such in the coal, the quantity is insignificant. The purpose of this paper is to explain the theory of the formation of ammonia during distillation, and call the attention of the members of the Institute to its application in connection with the production of heating-gas for metallurgical purposes, etc. For many years little or no importance was attached to the presence of ammonia in coal-gas. It was deemed by the gas-manufacturers an undesirable product of the process, as one of the impurities to be removed; and no attempt was made for its recovery. Not until its practical extraction and utilization was found possible, did scientists commence to investigate the question. Little was known about the nitrogen of the coal, and still less about the reactions leading to its transformation into ammonia. A. W. Hofmann, I believe, was the first to establish a relation between the percentage of nitrogen in the coal and the proportion of ammonia in the coal-gas. As early as 1863 he pointed out that, in dry distillation, such as is practiced in the manufacture of illuminating-gas, only one-third of the total nitrogen in the coal is liberated, two-thirds remaining in the coke. It is no longer possible to doubt that the ammonia is a synthetical product, resulting, under certain conditions, from the combination of the,elements of the coal.
