The accompanying tables' show that in 1936 production of crude oil in Poland decreased very slightly (Tables 1 and 5), by about 1 per cent, and that gas production increased by about 11 per cent. As in preceding years, drilling (Tables 1, 2 and 3) was devoted principally to extension of oil fields in the Jaslo district (fields 1, 5 and 7) and, in a lesser degree, of those in the Stanislaw6w district (field 27). Production of crude oil is being sustained in a large measure by the deepening of old wells; besides a total number of 183 new wells completed (Table 3) about 152 wells were deepened, and in a general way the results of deepening were better than those of new wells drilled. Reserves of "proved land" have not increased as far as crude oil is concerned, but a notable extension of gas fieldsZ was attained in Daszawa (field 25) and in the Roztoki area (field 5). In the sub-carpathian zone gas fields have been proved in the vicinity of Kalusz, Kos6wJ and in the northwestern sector of that zone, between Tarnow and Lezajsk. The gas horizons of Daszawa occur in the Upper Tortonian, those of Kos6w in the Lower Tortonian (Middle Miocene). Exploratory drilling has been performed near Kalusz, and has been commenced near Kos6w and in the Tarn6w area. The Kos6w gas approaches the "wet" type. A possible gas reserve with a volume of 4,000,000,000 cu. m. (141,000,-000,000 cu. ft.) has been calculated, for an area of about 5 sq. km. of the Daszawa field, on the basis of production obtained and of decreases in pressure and their distribution. The fields of Roztoki and Strachocina (No. 12) have not yet supplied sufficient data for a calculation of reserves, which might possibly be estimated at 2,000,000,000 cu, m. (70,000,-000,000 cu. ft.).

A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect under cyclic tensile loading was observed in zivconium specimens prestrained at 77°K so as to form large numbers of (1121) twins. The observed hysteresis loss was a maximum when the prestrain was just under 1 pct It also depended strongly on the maximum applied cyclic stress, but only moderately on loading rate and temperature (-72°to 100°C). The phenotnena have also been studied in terms of the elastic aftereffect where the data has been found to cotlforln closely to the functional relationship between strain and time, c = -RT/a In tank ft. t to)/Zr, for strains cts large as about 10-4 This eyication can be derived directly from the strain-rate equation There may be important commercial implications to the present discovery since it appears that within rather wide limits it may be possible to obtain any desired magnitude of damping capacity in zirconium melal. The damping propevties may also be given directional characteristics. It is shown that the observed anelaslic phenomena can he explained on the assumiplion that they are the resuilt of stress-induced twin-boundary movements in which the average twin increases its thickness by only a few percent. In polycrystalline zirconium, a grain is least favorably oriented for slip when its basal plane, containing the (1130) slip directions, lies nearly perpendicular to the principle normal stress. Mechanical twinning is favored by this orientation and under simple tensile deformation at room temperature the primary twinning mode is {1012).' The (1012) twinning shear is small (0.17) so that, during deformation, twin growth does not greatly enhance ductility. At 77°K, on the other hand, the predominant twinning mode shifts to {1121), and many thin (1121) twins can form at small strains.' Twins thus nucleated can grow readily during subsequent room-temperature deformation and permit easy deformation in unfavorably oriented grains. In addition, the (1131) twinning shear is large: 0.63. These facts have lead to a process' for greatly improving the room-temperature ductility of zirconium when it contains a sizable fraction of grains with basal planes nearly normal to the stress axis. Optimum results are obtained by slightly less than 1 pct prestrain. The effect is large so that a 50 pct elongation increase is readily attained. A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect has also been observed in zirconium specimens prestrained at 77°K. The present paper is concerned with some aspects of this effect which the experimental observations strongly indicate is primarily the result of strain-induced {1121) twin-boundary movements. This clearly suggests that mechanical twins formed by plastic deformation can cause anelastic effects similar to those previously observed2 for annealing twins and twins associated with phase transformations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All specimens were prepared from arc-melted sponge zirconium plate stock as previously described,3 which has a preferred orientation with basal planes aligned parallel to and uniformly distributed around the rolling direction. Both lonti-tudinal and transverse tensile specimens, with axes parallel and transverse, respectively, to the plate rolling direction, were cut from this plate. In a longitudinal specimen most grains are favorably oriented for slip, while in a transverse specimen a large fraction are unfavorably oriented. Prestraining at 77°K was performed in two ways. In one, annealed zirconium plate stock was cooled in liquid nitrogen and then rolled in the transverse plate direction to strains varying from 0.5 to 12 pct. Cylindrical 1/8-in.-diameter by 1-1/4-in.-gage-length tensile specimens were machined from this material. In the other, previously machined tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 77°K between 0.2 and 3.8 pct. Type FA 25-12 SR4 strain gages were cemented to all specimen gage sections. All tests were performed on an Instron testing machine of 10,000-lb capacity. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a typical two-cycle room-temperature stress-strain diagram for a specimen prestrained 0.65 pct by rolling at 77°K. The maximum stress in both cycles was 14,500 psi. Note that in the first cycle the loading and unloading curves are unsymmetrical so that a residual strain, er, remains after unloading. In the closing months of 1936 the copper industry gave every evidence that it was at last on the threshold of an improved era. At the beginning of the year prices stood at 91/4c, which in itself was a great improvement over prices prevailing for the three previous years. Industry generally was showing signs of moving forward in this country, and business was definitely good in certain foreign quarters. The threat of war and preparations for rearmament in Europe and Asia acted as a further stimulus to purchasing. By midsummer the situation had so improved and stocks had been so reduced that the cartel of foreign producers (including American producers with foreign mines) decided to increase the production quota to 75 per cent on Aug. 1. Large-scale buying gave continued strength to the price and by Oct. 1 the quota was increased to 80 per cent, and again on Oct. 15, to 85 per cent. Notwithstanding this the price of copper continued its advance and on Nov. 1, with stocks declining continuously, the cartel increased operations to 95 per cent, then to 105 per cent on Nov. 5. In the meantime the domestic producers, because of the great increase in home consumption, had increased their production by nearly one-half. At the close of the year copper sold at 126 per pound, and since the turn of the present year has reached 17c. This rapid increase has not been wholly justified. Much of the increase was due to the legitimate demands of recovering industry, but rearmament orders plus accumulation of reserve stocks in case of war, purchases in anticipation of labor strikes and purely speculative activities on the London Metal Exchange accounted for the balance. Certainly in view of the state of industry and the general world price level, it appears unnecessarily high. Talk of a copper shortage is sheer nonsense, the recent condition in the market being created by overbuying, leaving but a small volume for speculative supplies. It takes some months for an increase in mine output to reach the market, but production is again overtaking apparent consumption, stocks have begun to increase, and this, together with the reopening of many small

296. Definition of Specific Gravity. - The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density * to that of water at 4' C. (39'2' F.). This relative density may be learned in any case by comparing the ratio of the weight of a certain volume of the given substance to that of an equal volume of water; hence the specific gravity is often defined as: the weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water. The statement that the specific gravity of graphite is 2, of corundum 4, of galena 7-5, etc., means that the densities of the minerals named are 2; 4, and 7'5, etc., times that of water; in other words, as familiarly expressed, any volume of them, a cubic inch for example, weighs 2 times, 4 times, 7.5 times, etc., as much rn a like volume, a cubic inch, of water. Strictly speaking, since the density of water varies with its expansion or contraction under change of temperature, the comparison should be made with water at a fixed temperature, namely 4' C. (39'2' F.), at which it has its maxi- mum density. If made at a higher temperature, a suitable correction should be introduced by calculation. Practically, however, since a high degree of accuracy is not often called for, and, indeed, in many cases is impracticable to attain in consequence of the nature of the material at hand, in the ordinary work of obtaining the specific gravity of minerals the temperature at which the observation is made can safely be neglected. Common variations of temperature would seldom affect the value of the specific gravity to the extent of one unit in the third decimal place.

Basically, the Buckley-Leverett theory involves two systems which are similar in nature but are differentiated by time. These systems may be described by the fractional flow and frontal advance equations which essentially characterize the mechanics of oil movement while being expelled from the reservoir. The fractional flow equation originally developed by Leverettl may be expressed in the more usable form The development of this equation is based on Darcy's law describing fluid flow through porous media and applies to the flow at only one point (it is a point function). For simplification, the fractional flow equation is written in the above form because the capillary forces always increase the fractional flow of the displacing phase regardless of the direction of flow or the displacing phase. If, for simplicity, the effects due to gravity and capillary pressure differences are neglected, the fraction of the displacing fluid, f, at any point in the flowing stream is related to the properties of the system by 1 Thus, it is seen that in the absence of capillary and gravitational effects, fd for a given sand and fluids varies only with saturation and pressure. The magnitude of the viscosity ratio, —a has an effective range (range of about 30) in the system where gas is displacing oil and a much smaller range for water displacing oil. In order to make the fractional flow equation more versatile, it is necessary to connect the fractional flow at a given point and saturation with time. This problem was approached by Buckley and Leverett" who developed the frontal advance equation, Eq. 3 states that the rate of advance of a plane that has a fixed saturation, Sd, is proportional to the change in composition of the flow stream caused by a small change in the saturation of the displacing fluid. It is, essentially, a transformation of a material balance equation representing the net rate of accumulation of the displacing phase within a homogeneous sand block. This accumulation is proportional to the difference between the rate at which the displacing fluid enters the sand and that at which it leaves. Eq. 3 describes the velocity with which a plane of constant displacing phase saturation advances through a porous system. Buckley and Leverett," Babson,' Kern," Welge, and others have adequately discussed the basic mechanism and application of the fractional flow and frontal advance equations. APPLICATIONS OF THE FRONTAL ADVANCE THEORY TO PETROLEUM RECOVERY Two general applications of the Buckley-Leverett frontal advance theory involve the system in which the oil is being displaced by an expanding gas cap overlying the oil zone and that in which the oil is being displaced by water. Displacement by Gas in the Presence of an Immobile Water Saturation A system in which gas is the displacing phase may be thought of as having two forces effecting the displacement process. These forces are the gravitational force and that force exerted by the displacing gas. The gravitational effects control the displacing efficiency of the gas. The gravitational effect will be less at higher rates of flow, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the displacement of the oil by the gas. The more efficient displacements occur at flow rates which are less than the gravity free fall rate. Capillary forces can be neglected without materially changing the magnitude of the gas saturation. The Mile Six pool is used herein to illustrate the calculating procedures in evaluating gas drive-gravity drainage field perfomlance. These calculations represent the determination of the gas-oil contact when the distribution of the hydrocarbon pore volume is considered. Two methods

Experimental results are presented which indicate that transverse striations in horizontal zone-leveled Bi-Sb alloy crystals are due to irregular growth rate resulting from thermal fluctuations in the melt (Iring gowth. DURING the course of an investigation on the horizontal growth of semimetals,' it was found that crystals of Bi-Sb alloys contained many closely spaced parallel arrays of striations. These striations occurred perpendicular to the growth direction and parallel to the solid-liquid interface. We shall refer to them as transverse striations, or just striations'', to distinguish them from lineage substructures or longitudinal striations which form parallel to the growth direction and have been known to be associated with cellular structures.' Similar transverse striations have been reported previously to occur in other materials prepared by horizontal growth: metals,4 semiconductors,5 as well as their alls. - Various methods of crystal preparation have apparently little effect on the occurrence of the transverse striations. They form whether the crystals were grown by the vertical Czochralski technique, withe1' or without'3- rotation, or by the horizontal zoning methd.- Thus, the transverse striations are not limited to any one class of materials, nor to any particular method of preparation. It is likely, therefore, that all of the observed transverse striations may have some common cause. Previously, workers agreed that periodic changes in the growth rate bring about the striations. However, no agreement exists as to the origin of the growth-rate fluctuations. Some attributed the discontinuous growth to a purely external cause, such as fluctuations in the furnace temperature, jerky motions in the crystal pulling mechanism, or a nonsymmetrical temperature distribution in the melt (in the case of crystals grown by the Czochralski technique with rtation). Others looked for the cause in some fundamental property of the growth process itself. For instance, a certain degree of supercooling is required to initiate growth from the melt. But, with further growth, the degree of supercooling decreases because of the liberation of the heat of solidification at the solid-liquid interface. Thus, crystal growth would be brought to a halt until sufficient supercooling is resotred and the cycle begins again.3'11 According to this model, periodic fluctuations in the melt temperature should exist at the solid-liquid interface. Since the periodic fluctuations in growth rate would result in changes in the segregation coefficient of solute atoms, crystals containing the transverse striations may, in some cases, show a periodic impurity fluctuation along the length, resulting in a degradation of electrical properties. The resistivity striations in doped germanium'9-10 or lnsbB are well-known examples of this microsegregation. The present work was undertaken to explain the exact origin of the transverse striations, and to assess the extent of their effect on chemical homogeneity as well as on electrical properties of Bi-Sb alloy crystals. Results from our previous study of the crystal growth of Bi-Sb alloys1 indicated that the transverse striations may arise from the temperature fluctuations in the melt during growth. This paper will show that the melt temperature fluctuations are indeed responsible for the occurrence of the transverse striations. I) EXPERIMENTAL Although the transverse striations have been observed in all slow-grown Bi-Sb alloys across the entire compositional range, we selected a composition, Big3Sbs, for the present study in view of the extensive data available on the crystal growth of this alloy from a previous study.' High-purity bismuth and antimony, both a 6-nine grade by the manufacturer's emission spectrographic analysis, were used throughout. Independent mass-spectrographic analysis showed, however, that the starting materials were more nearly a 5-nine grade. each containing metallic impurities of approximately 10 ppm atomic. In zone-leveled Big5Sb5 alloys, the total metallic-impurity content was slightly lower, about 7 ppm atomic, indicating that some degree of purification was achieved during the growth. None of the electrically active impurities, such as tin and lead (acceptors) and tellurium and selenium (donors), were present in significant quantity in undoped Bi95Sb5. Typical analysis of the undoped Bi95Sb5 alloy is shown in Table I. Nonmetallic impurities, such as carbon and oxygen, were detected, sometimes as much as 100 ppm, in both the starting materials and the zone-leveled alloys: but the data were only qualitative. Mica is an orchid among minerals. It is formed in pegmatites, one of the most bizarre of igneous formations, and is exceeded by few other minerals in the perfection it may attain as to size, color, and cleavage. First used for window glazing, as an ornament and article of trade, it has become one of the most essential insulators of electricity, heat, and shock. Most internal combustion engines use mica condensers or capacitors and such machines of war as planes, tanks, and submarines are immobile without it. The original manuscript of this guide was written in April 1943 at the peak of war emergency. It was not used because shortly thereafter a decision was made to buy on a one price basis eliminating differentials for both quality and size. This is now presented with the thought that from the standpoint of preparedness we can only consider another war imminent and every effort should be made to set up in usable form the experience gained during the Second Morld War. Colonial Mica Corp. was set up by Metals Reserve Co. as a wholly owned government agency to encourage production of domestic mica and to purchase it. It soon became the exclusive buyimg agency for such mica. The writer as Southern Manager called on all the private agencies buying mica to assist in formulating buying policies, methods, and prices. A meeting was held for that purpose in Asheville, N. C., July 20, 1942. In the general discussion the first two hours of the meeting it was decided that the following factors should be considered in pricing strategic mica: clearness, flatness, trimming, color, classification (size and quality), free splitting, hardness, and air inclusions. Most of the mica miners have been buying strategic mica, according to the mine, as No. 1, No. 2, or Nos. 1 and 2 combined. In addition to these grades of strategic mica they have been buying three lower grades of mica, electric (vegetable-stained), black-spotted and black-stained. A number of mines were named one by one and the buyers present gave their opinions as to the basis they would use in buying the sheet mica from each. It was suggested that in addition to the prices already published, prices be posted up to 10 pct higher for special quality and preparation and prices be posted 25 pct lower than the published prices for the lowest acceptable grades of strategic mica, giving the buyers authority to make intermediate prices according to the quality and preparation. It was thought desirable at the same time to announce prices for nonstra-tegic mica where such quality is being obtained in mines producing strategic mica and where it would be necessary to take the output in order to get the strategic mica. It was also suggested that the price of electric and black-spotted mica be 50 pct below the price of the lowest grade of strategic mica and the price of black-stained mica be 60 pct below the price of lowest grade strategic mica. The few experienced buyers available were employed but they were inadequate for the job and others had to be trained. All needed a guide or primer of some kind to attain systematic procedure and consistent prices in their respective buying areas. The Mica Buyers Guide was formulated for that purpose based on experience gained in the first six months of buying. The Preface to the original guide was as follows: The purpose of this guide is to serve as a text in training beginners and as a handbook for experienced buyers of the instructions which have been issued up to this time. At the meeting of prospective buyers last summer, it developed that the first essential to attain uniformity must be some kind of check sheet. Our "Mica Buyers Report" was developed for this purpose and forms the backbone of this guide. Price is determined according to size, quality and preparation. Size can be measured, but no system of measurement or machine has been devised which can be substituted for the trained eye of the buyer to deterrnine quality and preparation. Although the "One Price" system was instituted and the "Guide" not used, the buyers were required to continue making out a "Mica Buyers Report" (Fig1) with each lot of mica purchased. The Moffat tunnel passes through the continental divide about 50 miles west of Denver, Colo., on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R.: It is 16 ft. wide, 24 ft. high, and 32,383 ft. long, a distance of a little more than 6 miles. The advantages accruing from its construction may be briefly summarized as follows: The tunnel eliminates 27 miles of grade averaging more than 3.5 per cent. and actually running well over 4 per cent. in many places, and changes the steepest grade from 4.5 to 2 per cent. It reduced the peak of the railroad from 11,660 to 9249 ft. which enables one engine to pull four times as much freight as it could before the tunnel was built. If the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. completes its line, this road will shorten the distance between Denver and Salt Lake City by 200 miles and will have no steeper grades than the lines now connecting the two cities. The proposal to drive the tunnel through the divide dates back about 25 years and D. H. Moffat, who was the leading spirit in the organization of the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. spent much of his time and energy in efforts to raise money for the tunnel that bears his name. He was unsuccessful and died before the work was started. In 1920 an effort was made to obtain state legislation favoring a bond issue to finance three important railroad tunnels in Colorado but the measure was defeated, largely through the efforts of the citizens of the region near Pueblo. A few years later devastating floods caused the Pueblo voters to seek relief from the state and at this time they withdrew their objection to the tunnel bond issue. As a result, a $6,720,000 bond was issued to finance the Moffat tunnel. Construction bids were so high that the work was finally allotted on a scheme analogous to a cost-plus basis. The contract was awarded to Hitchcock and Tinckler, who are paid a fee of $140,000 for driving the tunnel. All bills are paid by the Moffat Tunnel Commission. The contract was let Sept. 19, 1923, and Hitchcock and Tinckler agreed to complete the work by July 19, 1927. In the event of finishing before this date they were to be given a bonus of $1000 a day and

In order to understand the effect of zirconium on properties of Ti-Cu-A1 alloys, Ti-Zr alloys were examined for the presence of ordering or compounds at the following compositions in weight percent: 24.1 pct Zr (lZr:GTi), 32.2 pct Zr (lZr:4Ti), 38.8 pct Zr (lZr:3Ti), 49.0 pct Zr(1Zr:ZTi). Alloys were prepared as 15-g buttons by non- consumable arc melting under argon atmosphere from Bureau of Mines titanium (Bhn 63) and Reactor Grade zirconium (Bhn 150). Weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the initial button weight. Prior to heat treatment, buttons were hot-rolled at 600" to 700°C to rods of about 6 mm diam. Contamination after hot-rolling was found to extend to a depth of less than 0.5 mm. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. Annealing times were as follows: 700°C — 7 days; 600°C— 14 days; 575°C-1 and 2 months; 525°C-2 months; 500°C-2 months. Prior to heat treatment, all Ti-Zr alloys were vacuum annealed at 900°C to remove hydrogen. The reanneal of 575°C specimens for an additional month produced no observable microstructure changes. The results obtained by microstructure and X-ray diffraction are shown in Fig. 1, together with data of Hayes et al.' No other phases than a or P were found. Small amounts of retained P were detected by X-ray in the 49 pct Zr alloy. The data of the present investigation suggests that ß and a transus boundaries are at considerably lower temperatures than those of Hayes et al. The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed, small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High Priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure, high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 L/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40-kW (30-hp) capacity. Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing (Now. 1977) are presented.

ALUMINUM deoxidation equilibrium in liquid iron has been the subject of many investigations. Sawamura and Sano1 have written a critical survey of the literature on this subject and consider the data of Gokcen and chipman2 and of d'Entremont, Guernsey, and Chip-man3 to be most reliable. The present study was undertaken to check these data and extend the range of the experiments to lower temperature. The experiments consisted of equilibrating 5-lb Fe-Al melts with recrystallized alumina crucibles at 1580o + 10oC, and analyzing the solidified ingots for aluminum and oxygen. The electrolytic iron stock contained 100 ppm C, 20 ppm 0, and trace amounts of other elements.* The stock was induction-melted in an atmosphere of 5 pet H2 in argon to attain equilibrium between the melt and the crucible. The temperature was measured with a W, 3 pet Re/W, 26 pet Re thermocouple, and the equilibration time was about 4 hr. The results are plotted in Fig. 1 along with curves obtained from the data of d'Entremont et al.,3 for temperatures of 1740o and 1910°C. The present results can be seen to be consistent with the previously reported high-temperature data. The reaction under study is AI2O3 (s) = 2 Al (l) +3O [1] for which the deoxidation product is Kl =[% Al]2 [%O]3 [2] (Under the experimental conditions, Fe A12O4 is not expected to form.4) In Fig. 2, values of log Ki evaluated at 0.01 pet A1 are plotted against 1/T, using data obtained from all the investigations under consideration. The deoxidation product is plotted in Fig. 2 in lieu of the equilibrium constant (normally obtained by evaluating Ki as pet A1 — 0) because of the uncertainty involved in extrapolating to zero concentration. The difficulty in extrapolating the present data for 1580°C is apparent curvature in the log Ki vs pet Al plot. This curvature is perhaps due to the uncertainty in oxygen analysis for concentrations of 5 ppm and below. For the data of Gokeen and chipman,' the extrapolation is also difficult because of experimental scatter. The line drawn through the points plotted in Fig. 2 may be represented by the equation:

The production for 1942 declined 20.5 per cent from the previous year's total of 134,139,000 bbl. Tie daily average production for 1942 was approximately 292,000 bbl., or 74,000 bbl; less than the 366,000 daily average for 1941. At the beginning of 1942 the daily production was 367,000 bbl. This production declined steadily to 282,000 for June and to 246,000 for December. This steady decline was caused partly by the reduction in drilling resulting from Federal Conservation Order M-68 and partly by the fact that no major pool was found during the year. Discoveries Forty new fields (Fig. 2, Table 2), 48 extensions (Table 3), and 45 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 4) Were discovered in 23 counties in Illinois during 1942. Molybdenum was first discovered on the Continental Divide in Colorado in 19 11; and in 1918 two companies, one of which was the Climax Molybdenum 250 stpd operation, were producing. In 1919 both mines were shut down, but in 1924 the Climax mine reopened and has been producing ever since. Over the years mine production has been increased until today the mill capacity is 48,000 stpd (43,500 mtpd). From 1935 to 1973 all ore was mined underground by block caving with scraper slushing. Since 1973 ore production has been supplemented by open pit mining. As demand for molybdenum increased, upper levels of the mine became worked-out and new lower levels were opened. In late 1972 production began on the 600 level with the mined ore being primary and secondary crushed in the new No. 4 crushing station. Ore is hauled to the primary in 10 st (9. 1 mt) capacity Granby side-dump cars. The trains, carrying 200 st (181 mt), pass throug.h a dump block and discharge directly into a 54 in. by 84 in. Traylor TC gyratory crusher set at an 8 in. (203 mm) open side setting. Since the ore has already been broken to a size which will pass the finger raises in the mining areas, there are only rare oversize boulders to block the crusher opening. Selection of the crusher was based more on its capacity than its receiving opening, as is often the case with gyratories used in open pit operations. Nominal and maximum capacities for this unit are 1250 and 1800 stph (1 135 and 1635 mtph). The ore is often wet and sticky, so a mechanical car cleaning device is utilized. Under the crusher is a 300 st (270 mt) ore pocket equipped with a 60 in. (1.52 m) wide inclined conveyor which delivers the ore to a 2,000 st (1800 mt) surge bin. Near the head pulley of this conveyor is a wood picking station whe re tramp wood and steel are put into cars for removal. Two more apron feeders remove the primary crushed ore from the surge bin, and impact belts and conveyor belts transport the ore to the crushing station for screening ahead of two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard crushers. Secondary crushed ore is then conveyed to the surface for tertiary crushing. The entire underground crushing room containing the primary, two secondaries, screens and related equipment is serviced by a 100 st (90 mt) crane with a smaller capacity fast hook. A control room is situated so the operator can observe all the crushing operations. Rotoclone collectors remove dust from the entire operation (including the fumes from the zinc pots) and discharge it to the final product belt. THE Charleston Section of the A. I. M. E. held a joint meeting with the National Coal Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on May 6 and 7, at which 94 members and guests were registered. Mechanical operation of coal mines was the subject discussed. First on the program was a paper entitled "Rock Dusting in the Coal Mines of West Virginia," by R. M. Lambie, chief of the Department of Mines, and Gordon MacVean. It appears in full in the current issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, p. 290. J. E. Jones of the Old Ben Coal Corp. opened this discussion by describing the method of rock dusting employed in the mines of that company, giving many interesting details, incidentally referring to the use of rock dust in fighting mine fires. He described one case where a number of troughs was brought to within 150 ft. of the fire, and rock dust had been thrown in its direction. After each trough had been thrown the party advanced a few feet, where another trough was discharged. About 10 ft. were gained on each advance, until the party found they had advanced completely over the fire.

Production of petroleum and natural .gas increased in Canada in 1940 over the previous year. Alberta produced more than 97 per cent of the total Canadian production of 8,718,053 bbl. of oil, an increase for this province of nearly 12 per cent, whereas in Ontario and New Brunswick, where the production is relatively small, there was a slight decline. In Alberta the main producing field is Turner Valley, on the eastern edge of the foothills southwest of Calgary, and development continued in this field in 1940 with the completion of 36 wells, all of which obtained production. In the Red Coulce field, close to the International Boundary, near Coutts, no new wells were drilled and the seven producing wells showed a decline of 900 bbl. below the previous year. Also, in the Wainwright field of east central Alberta, four wells, yielding heavy crude oil, produced 4000 bbl. less oil than in 1939, owing possibly rather to discontinuous operation than to actual decline in potential yield. This decline was more than offset by production from a new field 40 miles northeast of Wainwright, at Borradaile, producing oil of 14" to I 5° A.P.1. There was a small increase in production during 1940 from the Del Bonita field, in southern Alberta, where the production is from two wells. The outstanding development of the year was the completion of Standard Oil Princess No. 2 well in the Steveville area, on the Plains 100 miles east of Calgary. This well was completed late in December with an initial flow1 of 520 bbl. of 26.3" A.P,I. oil, and 12,750 M cu. ft. of gas from the upper part of the Mississippian limestone. It has opened up a new field and given a further proof of the potentialities of the Southern Plains. The production of petroleum in Canada is shown in Table I. Since most of the yield comes from Alberta, the production is shown from the various fields in Table 2. The sale value of the petroleum produced in Canada in 1940 exceeded 11.1 million dollars, which is still somewhat less than the value of the natural gas production, shown in Table 3.
