The current study investigated the multiphase fluid flow, heat transfer, solidification of the steel, and the motion and entrapment of inclusions during the centrifugal casting process using FLUENT software. User-defined functions (UDFs) were developed to add velocity with a value related to the rotation speed and radial distance to the solidified steel, to exert a centrifugal force to the motion of inclusions, and to add the entrapment condition of inclusions at the solidifying shell and export the entrapment locations of the inclusion. The calculation shows that there are two peaks of inclusions along the thickness of the produced tube: one at close to outer surface and another one close to the inner surface of the tube. With a larger rotation speed, inclusions tend to be entrapped more towards the inner surface. The calculation agrees well with the industrial measurements.

Fe-Ga alloys, with compositions around 27.5 at % Ga, can be heat treated to obtain ? (ordered bcc), DO19 (ordered hexagonal), and L12 (ordered fcc) ordered structures. Our earlier work using polycrystalline samples had shown that magnetostriction is strongly influenced by ordering in this alloy. Here more detailed study of the correlation between ordering and magnetostriction using single crystals of Fe 27.5 at. % Ga alloys is reported. Single crystals of Fe 27.5 at % Ga were grown using Bridgman single crystal growth technique. X-ray and electron diffraction were used to study the ordering in this alloy. Magnetostriction measurements were carried out at no load conditions. Elastic constants were measured using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy.

The present work deals with a study of the mechanical activation of processing of Egyptian monazite by its simultaneous ball-milling and pressure leaching in order to improve the recovery of thorium and lanthanides from monazite. Experiments of simultaneous ball-milling and alkaline leaching of monazite contrary to autoclave leaching were carried out in stainless steel ball-mills of cylindrical shape under different conditions of temperature, pressure, time and alkali amount and strength. The ball-mills were heated and mechanically rotated in an electric furnace by means of roll mechanism. The effective rotation speed was fixed at 130 rpm in all tests. The charge of steel balls of different diameters was equivalent to 45% of the total mill volume. Monazite was charged in ball-mill without preliminary grinding. It is found that high rate of monazite leaching by ball-milling leaching method is achieved at lower temperature, shorter time and lower expense of alkali than in autoclaves. The results obtained show that complete recovery of thorium and lanthanides from monazite (99.8%) by simultaneous ball milling and alkaline leaching is attained at 140°C within 2 h. It is concluded that processing of monazite by its simultaneous ball-milling and leaching is mechanically activated and accelerated as a result of grinding action of steel balls that caused the continuous removal of the hydroxide product from reacting particle surfaces. This leads to the exposing of fresh and activated monazite particles surfaces to alkali leach solution and consequently the acceleration of the reaction of monazite processing.

"Confocal fluorescence scanning laser microscope was applied to characterize the surface flaw of ceramics in great detail. A high potential -of the characterization technique is presented first. Then the technique was applied to clarify the relationship between the flexural strength of ceramics and the surface flaw. This kind of direct information of surface flaw should be essential for the fundamental study in this area, but has been lacking. The examination revealed that large defects are present on the machined surface of ceramics. Their size is consistent to the flexural strength measured on the material. The characterization tool was also applied to examine the formation of surface flaw in machining of ceramics.IntroductionClarification of fracture origin should be the starting point in the study on strength in ceramics. However, this task has been extremely difficult in some ceramics, such as an alumina ceramics. It may break from both internal and surface flaws. The former should reflect the quality of production process and the latter the machining. Examination of surface flaws should be very important for developing a better machining method for ceramics. The knowledge may valuable for establishing a better production process also.ExperimentAlumina Referceram (JFCC) was used as samples. They are cut to size of 3x4x40mm, and the surfaces were ground to meet the requirements of testing method for flexural strength of fine ceramics, JIS R 1601. They were soaked in an aqueous solution of fluorescence dye and evacuated with an aspirator for an hour to allow the solution penetrate into surface flaws. After excessive solution remained on the surface was removed by gentle washing, the specimens were dried at 120°C for 48 hours. The 4 point bending mode was applied to measure the fracture strength."

"Two advanced control solidification technologies were studied in this article to improve the quality of the cast ingots as well as to control the solidification structure evolution during the plasma arc melting (PAM) processing of Ti-6-4 ingots: (i) electromagnetic stirring (EMS), and (ii) ultrasonic treatment (UST). The developed EMS modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, fluid flow, and heat transfer equations, and mesoscopic modeling of the grain structure. The UST analysis tool is capable to model acoustic streaming and cavitation. It is used in this work to study ingot solidification under the presence of ultrasound. Predictions of the macrostructure, GET formation and primary dendrite arm spacing for PAM Ti-6-4 ingots processed with and without EMS or UST were discussed.1. IntroductionTitanium (Ti) alloys are melted, refined and cast into ingots through plasma arc cold hearth melting (PAM), electron beam cold hearth melting (EBM) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for jet engine applications. Process modeling has become a viable tool to optimize the PAM, EBM, and VAR processes. A comprehensive modeling approach to simulate ingot solidification phenomena in primary melting and secondary remelting processes of Ti alloys would include models for macroscopic mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid flow, acoustic, electromagnetic and species transport. The approach should also include microscopic models to predict the evolution of grain structure in solidifying ingots in conjunction with electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and ultrasonic stirring (UST)."

A common objective in many Cu/Zn concentrators is to reduce the loss of Zn to the Cu-concentrate. One suspected source of the problem is accidental activation of sphalerite by heavy metal ions such as lead. One method of quantifying surface metal ion concentration is extraction with ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (EDTA). This was used to survey Cu-rougher flotation at three Cu/Zn concentrators: Les Mines Selbaie, Falconbridge's Kidd Creek division, and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Although all have less than 0.2% galena in the ore, Pb ions proved an abundant extractable metal. From a laboratory study a model of surface coverage of lead species generated by an ore was combined with an estimate of surface concentration of lead required to activate sphalerite to explore the possibility of accidental activation. Ores with Pb-grade as low as 0.1% can produce sufficient Pb to be a potential problem.

The electrochemical synthesis was conducted in anhydrous ethanol solvent mixed with conductive reagent when tantalum plate was used as anode and stainless steel plate as cathode. The effects of different conductive reagents (such as NH4Br, (CH3)4NCl, (C4H9)4NCl), conductive reagent concentration and the space on the cell voltage and the current density were investigated. The current efficiency of electrosynthesis was more than 95%. The electrolyte, a mixed solution was then undergone air distillation and vacuum distillation to get the final product which was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectra, 1H-Neclear Magnetic Resonance(1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Carbon and hydrogen contents in the product were determined by elemental analysis instrument. Results consistently show that the product was tantalum penta-ethoxide.

"In this study, design and investigation of biogas digester consisting of methane tank with built-in solar collector to utilize solar energy for the heating of the slurry prepared from the dung and heat exchanger is designed, developed and tested. The digester was laboratory type and consists of cylindrical metallic tank of size of 0.5 m in diameter; 1 m in height and 200 liters in volume. The surface of the digester from outside was covered by thermo insulated material a glass wool, except of south side (in northern hemisphere). This side played the role of built-in collector and was blackened to increase absorption of solar irradiation and covered under 45o by glass. In the blackened side of the digester on the different heights it was installed metallic pipes for the inlet and outlet of the air, connected with heat exchanger installed inside of the digester. The heat exchanger was fixed in the level above of the inlet pipe. The horizontal plane reflector concentrates solar beams to blackened side of the digester. In the winter period, it was found that the retention time of this digester is shorter on 15% and produced biogas volume is larger on 20% with respect of ordinary biogas digester. This digester is used for the demonstrative purposes and as a teaching aid presently and base on the results it may be used for the construction of large volume digesters for use in the farms, especially located in the remote and mountain areas where the climate in the winter period is cold. Introduction At present many experts around the world have focused their efforts to energy crises because energy is one of the most important factors for the development of the society. It is known that consuming energy is proportional to quality or standard of life. There is a close relationship between energy consumption and the Gross National Product (GNP). It is obvious that for further development of the country additional sources of energy is required, which are cheap, safe and environmentally compatible with respect to the action on possible wastes. Utilization of renewable energy is one route to help in solving the above mentioned problems. In particular, biogas as a source of renewable energy is produced by biotechnology and used wide on residential scale [1]. The biogas was produced for the very first time in 1814 by Deivy from organic wastes. In 1900 production of biogas was started in Bombay (India) [2, 3]. Biogas consists of 55-70% methane (CH4) and around of 27-44% carbon dioxide (CO2) and less than 1% H2 and H2S. At present biogas is used widely in some countries for lighting, machines, and vehicles, generators, cooking and heating. Biogas generation is suitable for small to large scale operation and at present is realized in a number of developed and developing countries as USA, Hungary, China, India etc. Since 1990s biogas projects construction in China has developed steadily by the end of 1998, there were altogether 6.88 million household biogas digesters [4]. In Russia biogas digesters are used for processing of hard dung into biogas [5]. Over the last few years the very first biogas digesters were constructed in Tajikistan as well [6,7] and it was found that the digesters can work with sufficiently high efficiency in mountain areas as well ."

"Low cost processing of metal matrix composites is an essential requirement for this class of materials to be acceptable in commercial application. In an effort to reduce the cost of processing of metal matrix composites, an infrared pressureless liquid infiltration technique has been developed. The salient features of infrared infiltration are that it is rapid, simple and a low cost process. The rapid processing capability causes very little oxide formation on the alloy resulting in both improved wetting and flow characteristics and reduced oxygen contamination in the composite. Thus, vacuum is normally not required. Using infrared inflltration, aluminum and titanium matrix composites have been prepared under an ambient argon atmosphere. Reinforcements in these composites include carbon fibers, silicon carbide Nicalon fibers and Textron's SCS fibers. Microstructural and mechanical test results indicate that completely consolidated composites with good fiber distribution, limited interfacial reaction and high mechanical properties can be manufactured by this process. IntroductionAluminum and titanium matrix composites reinforced with ceramic reinforcements are strong candidates for numerous applications in the aerospace and automotive industries. Aluminum matrix composites are commonly fabricated by either solid state vacuum hot pressing, liquid state pressure infiltration or squeeze casting [1]. Although liquid state pressure infiltration and squeeze casting has significant advantages over solid state processes, the requirement for pressure makes these composites uneconomical for large scale industrial application. Titanium matrix composites are primarily fabricated by solid state diffusion bonding [2]. Pressureless liquid infiltration can significantly reduce the cost of fabrication in both the composite systems. However, during pressureless infiltration processes, several complications concerning the wetting characteristics and chemical compatibility arise."

"A unique DC electric arc rotary furnace with capacity 150 kg has been designed and constructed for the recycling of low-quality scrap and aluminum dross. The main constructive feature of this furnace is that the axially positioned graphite electrodes (cathode and anode) are placed 100 mm away from the rotation axis of the furnace. A specific characteristic of the construction is the possibility one of the electrodes (the anode) apart from moving axially (parallel to the furnace axis) to move at 90° outside the working space. High recovery rate of metal aluminum from aluminum dross (92%) was realized in this furnace. This is the reason for construction of industrial DC electric arc furnace.IntroductionThe consumption of aluminum waste has been rising continuously on a world scale, which is a great stimulus for the development of the technology for aluminum recycling.To recover the aluminum in dross, the conventional recycling process uses salt rotary furnaces heated with a fuel or a gas burner. This treatment process produces a secondary dross containing alumina, salts, impurities and a small amount of aluminum. Molten aluminum is tapped from the furnace and the residue is then dumped from the furnace. It has been the practice to dispose the residue in a landfill. Improvement of this technology, known as the oxy-fuel process, uses a gas burner enriched with oxygen to increase the thermal efficiency [1]. Recent studies show that the most efficient aggregate for recycling of aluminum scrap has turned out to be the rotary tilting furnaces, heated by plasma or electric arc, for which the use of flux is not necessary [2,3].Accordingly, there is a substantial need in the industry for an improved process for recovering free aluminium. It is particularly desirable that such process be cost effective and ecologically safe."

Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

The effect of ore mineralogy on the bioleaching of metals from complex sulphides was studied by investigating the bioleaching of zinc and copper from a bulk complex sulphide ore from Ishiagu, Nigeria, using mixed cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum in mechanically stirred reactors at varying particle sizes. Mineral phases within the varied particle sizes of -53, 53, 75 and 106µm were identified using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), while the elemental distribution within the varied particles sizes was determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Optical Emission Spectrometry using Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Bulk ore and the leached residues were examined by X-Ray Diffraction. The highest bioleaching recoveries were obtained at particle size of 75µm, while particle size of 106µm gave the least recoveries. Lower recoveries at particle sizes of 53 and -53µm were as a result of their higher silica and siderite content which affects pH, iron mobility and oxidation.

"The present work was aimed at synthesizing nanostructured hybrid materials derived from the functionalization of smectite clays with ligands containing thiol (-SH) groups for application in cadmium adsorption processes. An in nature Brazilian bentonite was investigated. The modification route was based on the grafting reaction between hydroxyl groups present on clay surface and the hydrolyzable alkoxy group of the (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane in dry toluene under reflux. The present work showed that the proposed modification route was effective for the grafting of the thiol groups in the clay structure. The thiol-functionalized bentonite samples showed average binding capacities 160% higher with respect to Cd2+ to those obtained with the ungrafted material. These results support a mechanism of adsorption involving primarily ion complexation by the thiol groups (specific) instead of cation exchange (unspecific). The proposed modification processes are suggested for the preparation of novel adsorbent materials with controlled selectivity and specificity and therefore with good potential for separation and pre-concentration purposes.IntroductionMany efforts have recently been devoted to the design and preparation of inorganic-organic nanomaterials because of their potential application in novel functional materials. The intercalation of organic species within the spaces between interlayers of inorganic layered crystals provides nanostructures consisting of alternating layers of inorganic and organic compound. The intercalation reactions occur by insertion of mobile guest species (neutral, molecules, or ions) into the accessible crystallographic-defined vacant sites located between the layers (interlayer spacing) of the layered host structure [1}.Silane coupling agents, used widely for the modification of silica surfaces, have also been employed more recently for modification of layered silicates [2,3,4,5]. Modification with organosilane involves grafting reactions by establishing covalent bonds between the reactive groups of the layer, normally hydroxyl groups, and silane molecules. These reactions can be restricted to the external surface (the basal spacing remains unchanged) or to the interlayer surface, in which case an interlayer expansion occurs. The resulting material can be defined as a hybrid material or, more specifically, functionalized inorganic layered material [1]."

In its early stage of copper solvent extraction development, SX plants were designed in a series configuration and gradually the copper industry reduced staging and trains for keeping capital investments reasonably low. At a later date of its development, series parallel configuration was applied in some copper SX plants, particularly for increasing copper production at low copper tenor in pregnant leach solution. A gap between series and series parallel configuration had been observed for years. Conventional SX plants in series configuration frequently do not have the flexibility for maintaining designed or expected production level, whenever copper concentrations in pregnant leach solutions are getting low, whereas series parallel flow schemes almost require to double SX feed flows for achieving optimum results. A combined SX configuration breaks the gap and its application potentials are explained.

Tests were conducted on C86200 high-strength yellow brass in order to ascertain the effect of a low level of nickel on the mechanical properties on this alloy. A series of two alloys was studied, one of which had a nickel content of 0.85% and the other with <0.05% nickel. Copper and aluminum content ranged from 62.5% to 64% and 3.2% to 4.6%, respectively. When compared by zinc equivalents, a nickel addition of 0.75% in high-strength yellow brass does not act like copper but raises the tensile strength, 0.5% yield strength and BHN while lowering the elongation.

Aluminium alloy matrix cast composites have been synthesised by incorporating fine graphite powders (0.5 - 20 µm size) and chopped carbon fibres (6.5 pm P). 3-6 mm length) by liquid metallurgy technique. Incorporation of these second phase materials exceeding 6-8 wt% invariably resulted in agglomeration of the dispersoids and sometimes leading to even total rejection. It was found that small additions of mischmetal (1-3 wt%) during dispersion resulted in better incorporation without much agglomeration of the dispersoid as evident from the macro and micro structures of the composites. Further, the additions of mischmetal increased the volume of the effective incorporation of the dispersoid even to the extent 50- 60%. The mischmetal addition results in a significant increase in the power factor of the stirrer motor indicating an apparent increase in the viscosity of the system. The higher viscosity of the melt increase the shear transmission conditions within the melt during stirring thereby breaking the agglomerates of the dispersoids. The increased viscosity of the melt seems to be due to the formation rare earth - aluminium inter metallics precipitation, as observed in the metallographic studies, thereby making the process a "pseudorheocasting? technique. A provisional patent has been filed based on this work.

Low temperature X-ray diffraction and thermal property studies of the solid-solid state phase transition for the polyalcohols (pentaerythritol (PE), pentaglycerine (PG) and neopentylglycol (NPG)) thermal energy storage solid solutions have been investigated by using X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods. X-ray diffraction studies on polyalcohols solid solutions, PE-NPG and PG-NPG, are from ?10oC to 50oC. XRD results shows the + mixed phase at the related low temperature (?10oC) for both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions. At high temperature range, XRD results show phase for PG-NPG solid solution and + mixed phase for PE-NPG solid solution. There are only two Bragg peaks, (111) and (200), shown in phase XRD patterns. The polyalcohols solid solutions have been cycled 5 times between -20oC to 100oC at different DSC scan rates to study the phase transition properties. DSC results of both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions show that the solid-solid state phase transition is near room temperature. In the blast furnace process, the dust entrained in the blast furnace gas enters into the down-comer, flows through the gravity dust separator (to eliminate coarse particles) and then is collected in a bag-house. The powder collected by the baghouse is called bag dust, while both fractions are called blast furnace dust whose main components are C and Fe. The dust also contains small amounts of nonferrous metals such as Zn and Pb, which have some value. Also, due to the small particle size and low density the dust is easily suspended in air and so can endanger human health. Therefore it is necessary to develop a process to both treat the dust to recover the metal values and to dispose of the residue – preferably by recycling to the blast furnace itself via the sinter strand. These objectives will result in good economic, environmental and social benefits [1].

"An electrochemical cell has been designed to treat very diluted cobalt solutions, i.e. those deriving from recycling processes of lithium-ion batteries. A reticulated vitreous carbon sponge was used as cathode and a Pt-coated Ti net as anode. A controlled potential electrolysis has been carried out in a solution flowing in the cell and maintained at a constant pH of 6.5. Considering the cathode dimensions (10.0 cm * 10.0 cm * 1.25 cm), rather high volumes of solution (>1 litre) can be treated with flow rates up to 1.6 l/min. The process yield is obviously related to the solution concentration; it has been observed that, starting with a solution containing 200 ppm of Co2+, the yield is initially ~35-40%, but it decreases to ~20% when 80% of the initial cobalt content has been electrowon. The yield increases up to ~50% if the carbon electrode is coated by cobalt. The conditions allowing a fast and complete removal of cobalt are outlined. Introduction Industrial liquid effluents containing heavy metal ions arise not only during hydrometallurgical processing, but also in many sector of chemical industries utilizing metal catalysts and process reagents. These waste solutions containing low quantities of metallic ions can be treated by chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, etc. before final discharge. All these techniques could be efficient for complying the aqueous effluents with the severe rules related to the environmental impact, but they can not directly produce metals. Particularly the chemical precipitation presents two main drawbacks, huge amount of sludge prodction and reagent costs to produce this useless and sometime dangerous sludge that have to be considered. Electrochemical technologies can be used for the treatment of effluents polluted by metal ions, showing the following advantages in comparison with other processes: 1. recovering of the polluting substances in metallic forms, with subsequent reusing; 2. absence of process slag, which should be subsequently disposed of. In this work an electrochemical reactor with a reticulated vitreous carbon cathode and a platinated titanium net anode has been designed and utilized for removal Co from waste aqueous solutions. Porous materials have been used as electrodes for this cell, as their high specific surface area favours the treatment of these low metal content solutions (1-7). This kind of electrodic material presents very interesting chemical-physical characteristics such as: low density, low thermal expansion and high electrical and thermal conductivities; particularly the reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) presents a very elevated void volume, rigid structure, good resistance to temperatures in non-oxidizing environments and very low resistance to fluid flow."
