Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." Like so many installations of its type approaching middle age, the ore processing and shipping facilities in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, have taken a lot of twists and turns in their lifetime. The object of this paper is to lead you through these twists and turns and some of the reasoning for them. The need for additional sources of iron are in the United States became evident during the time of the second world war. An exploration team from U. S. Steel located further high quality direct shipping iron are in commercial quantities near Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela in 1947. Basic decisions were made to develop these reserves for export via the Orinoco River through a new shipping port to be built at the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni Rivers. The basic concept was for the ore to be loaded directly to ocean going vessels. This was something of a gamble since the basic economics depended upon successfully opening up the main channel of the Orinoco River to deepwater vessels, and the Bethlehem Steel mine in the same area was already working with shallow draft river boats and a transfer station on the coast. Always, the basic philosophy has tended to be to plan with expansion in mind. The original conveyor systems were 1.52 m (60 inches) wide with 200 idlers, whereas 1.07 m (42 inches) or 1.22 m (48 inches) wide conveyors could have carried any production foreseen at the time of installation. Stockpiles have been located and designed with room for expansion. Basic designs have had dotted line future expansion blocked in.

High horizontal stress has been well recognized as a significant factor in roof control. It can adversely affect roof stability if the panel is designed improperly. Mining experience has shown that it can cause a cutter roof. The effects of high horizontal stress on roof stability depend on many factors such as magnitude and direction of the maximum principal horizontal stress, ratio of the maximum to minimum principal horizontal stress, structure and mechanical properties of the immediate roof and mining sequence. However, little is known about the intrinsic mechanism of high horizontal stress effect on roof stability except some conceptual explanations. In order to design a stable entry, the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress around the openings must be fully understood. Using the 3-D finite element analysis technique, this paper presents the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress field for a three-entry system with different orientations of horizontal stress. Based on the horizontal stress redistribution, possible roof failure for different orientations of horizontal stress is analyzed.

"Gaseous explosions are one of the most hazardous incidents in process and mining industries. Experimental research in this area is shown to be high risk and expensive. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques are reasonable alternatives to experiments; specifically when testing large scale gaseous explosions such as methane explosion in underground mines. The dimensions of a confined space where explosions could occur vary significantly. Thus, the scaling effect on explosion parameters is worth to be investigated using CFD tools. In this research paper, the impact of scaling on the explosion overpressures is investigated by employing two scaling factors. These two factors are the Gas-fill Length scaling factor (FLSF) and the Hydraulic Diameter scaling factor (HDSF). The combinations of eight HDSFs (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 100) and five HDSFs (0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8) will cover a wide range of space dimensions where flammable gas could accumulate. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the selected premixed combustion and turbulence models. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model was used because it shows accuracy compared to the widely used Reynolds’ averaged models for the scenarios investigated in the experiments. Researchers also simulated methane explosions in both deflagration and detonation regimes using different numerical schemes. Three major conclusions can be drawn from the simulation results. (1) The overpressure increases with both FLSF and HDSF within the deflagration regime; (2) in an explosion duct with length to diameter ratio greater than 54, detonation is more likely to be triggered for stoichiometric methane/air mixture; (3) overpressure increases as an increment hydraulic diameter of a geometry within deflagration regime. INTRODUCTION The most typical category of gaseous explosion accidents is methane explosion accidents in the mining industry. It normally leads to significant economic loss and massive amount of casualties (McPherson, 1993). It could occur in unconfined spaces, such as combustion due to flammable gas leakage, as well as confined spaces, such as inner-combustion in process equipment and methane explosions in airways of underground mines. Gaseous explosions in confined spaces are more intensive compared to unconfined spaces provided that the total energy of explosives is the same. In addition, explosion characteristics are also affected by the geometry of a selected confined space. The size of confined spaces commonly encountered in process and mining industries could differ as much as an order of four (Catlin & Johnson, 1992). A better understanding of the scaling effect on gaseous explosions could contribute to explosion mitigation and prevent operation activities within high risk regions. This research paper has investigated this scaling effect and its impact on explosion propagation. The approach to investigate explosions is either experimental or numerical. Large scale explosion experiments are often costly and dangerous (Catlin, 1991; Zhang, Pang, & Zhang, 2011). Lab scale experiments and numerical methods are common alternatives. However, it is not yet clear if the findings in lab scale experiments can be used to represent the explosion characteristics or not. On the other hand, CFD modeling has been used to simulate chemical combustions and, thus, can be used to evaluate the scaling effects in methane explosions."

A study was conducted to remove iron from sulfate solu¬tions using Eichrom'sDipex®extractant, PP'-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It was found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. More than 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

The relationship between hydrothermal ore deposits and hot spring systems has received intensive study in recent years, particularly as a consequence of interest in the energy potential of geothermal systems. Base and precious metal deposition in surface pools and at shallow depths in modern geothermal systems has been recorded in numerous publications (1, 2, 3) Theoretical studies of hydrothermal fluid flow at depth, connected to surficial hot springs systems, have been presented by White and others (1), Cathles (2) , Henley and McNabb (3). As a result of these and additional studies, numerous hydrothermal ore deposits are thought to have originated as genetic parts of larger geothermal systems. In particular, it appears that metal precipitation is greatly enhanced in zones of boiling where volatiles and steam are escaping (4). High grade, near surface concentrations of base and precious metals, deposited as a result of partial vaporization of rising fluids, are such a common aspect of modern not spring systems that ore deposition models are becoming based on what may be called a geothermal model. In its most general terms, this model requires an anomalously high thermal gradient which acts as the driving force behind a convecting hydrothermal system. The water may be entirely meteoric or may be In part at least of other origins. The water migrates towards the higher temperature area, becomes heated, and picks up alkalies and metals by dissolving minerals along the fluid path. As water exits to the surface above the heat source, a mass balance requires the incoming hot water to rise to replace the lost water. As the water rises past the elevation where the hydrostatic pressure is insufficient to prevent boiling, then boiling will occur. Depending on the salinity and the temperature of the water, boiling can occur anywhere from great depths to near surface. Boiling results in a loss of volatiles, a pH rise in the fluid phase, cooling of the remaining fluid, a rise in oxygen fugacity, a concentration of salts in the remaining liquid, and precipitation of ore and gangue minerals.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

Explosives are used to mine coal. Any blast results in three size categories of products, namely over-, middle-, and under-size. Boulders can still be broken smaller in further operations after blasting. The under-size, for instance coal fines, negatively affects the mining efficiency. Their reduction ensures better returns. The paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing coal fines' generation. Inherent fractures are identified as one of source of fines. The discussion is therefore centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Interior, has responsibility over both energy and non-energy mineral development on the United States Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) under the OCS Lands Act (“OCSLA”). BOEM’s Marine Minerals Program (MMP) manages federal offshore mineral deposits through non-competitive, negotiated agreements for sand and gravel (“sand”) used in coastal restoration efforts and the competitive leasing of critical and hard economic minerals (“critical minerals”). As the steward of OCS critical minerals, BOEM MMP is responsible for understanding where critical minerals are located, identifying and understanding their environments, managing activities that affect these resources, and implementing pertinent federal policies. Fulfilling these responsibilities involves the collection and analysis of environmental, geological, and geophysical data; supporting the science needed to understand the impacts of resourcerelated authorized activities on the biological, physical, and sociocultural environments; encouraging emerging technologies that can reduce the environmental impact of activities; and communicating with stakeholders to foster an understanding of existing federal regulations and potential needs to revise the legal framework. Four U.S. federal rules in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) currently inform MMP’s procedures: 30 CFR 580 (prospecting for minerals), 30 CFR 581 (leasing of minerals), 30 CFR 582 (operations in the OCS related to minerals), and 30 CFR 583 (negotiated noncompetitive agreements for sand). Other federal laws and regulations are also pertinent, particularly those supporting the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, and Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension is being constructed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnel has shallow ground cover and mixed-face conditions and passes underneath the SkyTrain and MARTA stations and airport terminal buildings. It includes a twin tube Bifurcation with a span of over 45 feet and ground cover of 12 feet. A flat roof is being constructed at the Bifurcation to maximize rock cover and minimize surface settlements. This paper focuses on design and construction challenges for the Bifurcation and tunneling beneath the world’s busiest airport, while minimizing impacts to operations.

FUNCTIONS OF RAIL HAULAGE SYSTEMS The principal application of rail haulage in under¬ground mining is in the movement of ore or coal pro¬duction from near the mining areas out to a processing plant. In some cases, such production haulage may end at a shaft pocket or slope belt conveyor transfer station, depending on the type of mine and the geo¬logical placement of the mineral being mined. Main-Line Haulage The basic reasons for choosing main-line rail haul¬age are high-tonnage production per shift and long haulage distances. The choice between rail and other systems, such as belt conveyors, is not easy and requires an integrated study of many factors: tonnage, distance, grade, product size, number of producing areas, ore reserve, safety, capital cost, operational and maintenance cost, and the mining system. Projecting a main-line rail haulage system for com¬parison with other systems requires a choice of many variables which are interrelated. The project must start with consideration of the mining system, tonnages per day, distances and grades, and loading and dumping conditions. Rail mine cars of different sizes and types are studied. High tonnage demands consideration of wider track gages. A suggested minimum for metal mines is 914.4 mm (36 in.); for coal mines, 1066.8 mm (42 in.). The choice of the train size should be governed by tonnage per shift, physical factors of loading and dumping, cycle time, and the number of trains that can be operated and safely controlled. After the size of the train is determined, the type, size, and specifi¬cations of the locomotive can be selected. The loco¬motive may be trolley, battery, or diesel; selection guides are discussed elsewhere in this chapter. The advantages of rail main-line haulage are high tonnage capacity, flexibility, reliability, safety, low operational and maintenance cost, and dual usage of the system (supply haulage, for example). The dis¬advantages are high capital investment, high installation cost, the requirement for more maintenance facilities, and restriction to certain ore reserves and mine pro¬jections. Supply Haulage Supply haulage is a basic requirement of any mine, but the type and volume of supplies vary with the type of mineral being mined, the mining methods, and the size of the mine. A mine developed for rail main¬line haulage gains supply haulage through the addition of a secondary track system to extend the main line closer to the producing areas. Additional haulage equipment, generally smaller, is also added. It is neces¬sary to design into the rail system more switch bypass points and train control systems. The track system standards demanded by rail main-line haulage con¬tribute to the reliability and efficiency of the supply haulage function, whereas a supply track system to supplement other haulage systems often suffers from poorer track and installation standards. When belt conveyors are chosen for production haulage, a rail supply haulage system is often installed rather than using rubber-tired vehicles for supply haul¬age. The conditions of the seam or ore body create these items for consideration: haulage grade of more than 6% favors rubber-tired vehicles; longer haulage distances favor rail; difficulty in maintaining a smooth roadway favors rail; and movement beyond the end of a rail system generally requires rubber-tired vehicles, making a single system rather than a dual system attractive. Although operation of a supply haulage system may be concentrated on a single shift of a multiple-shift mining operation, proper planning and supervision are required if the haulage is to be efficient. Often the newer personnel at a mine are assigned to supply haul¬age which may add to the difficulty of obtaining maxi¬mum efficiency. Supply haulage by rail offers the advantages of high reliability, lower maintenance, and high efficiency over long distances. The disadvantages are less flexibility, high installation costs, and rubber-tired vehicles for use beyond the inby end of track often required. Personnel Movement The efficient and comfortable movement of the miner to and from his work area has a significant effect on his daily output. Minimizing man-trip time also becomes more and more important as hourly wages increase. Personnel are generally moved over a rail system by one of three methods: a specialized personnel carrier to which a certain number of men who work in a certain area are assigned; a combination vehicle, used to carry personnel but also capable of being used as a light supply/utility locomotive during a working shift; and man-trip cars towed by a supply locomotive. The first and second methods are used in coal mines where long distances make speed and comfort important. The third method is more common in metal mines. Equipment Movement As mining equipment technology has advanced, many mining machines and their subcomponents have grown in size. This trend requires careful planning for adding specialized carriers to handle the movement of larger equipment. Continuous miners, longwall equipment, raise borers, and ventilation equipment are examples of machines which may be difficult to move and which require special handling. The selection of the weight, speed, and operating characteristics of supply locomotives used to move equipment is important. Larger mines may often justify a special group of loco¬motives for this application.

This is an extension of the work on recovery of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores, and recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust from phosphate industry. Carbon adsorption was considered as the most adequate method for recovery of silver from thiourea leach solutions. For this reason it was decided to examine the characteristics of adsorption of silver on activated carbon. Coconut hard shell activated carbon was used for this study. Ag(TU)2C1 complex was dissolved into thiourea solution to give 2 gpl stock solution. Thy studied parameters were: loading isotherms at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C, initial kinetics as a function of thiourea concentration, temperature, pH, N2, and O2. It was found that the loading capacity of carbon for silver and thiourea was 137-150 mg/g and 514 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C.

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

Introduction The US Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy has begun a new approach for developing the ultra-clean energy plants. This approach will allow the nation to continue to use low-cost fossil fuel feedstocks during the early decades of the 21st century. The new approach is called Vision 21. The overall goal is to effectively eliminate, at competitive costs, environmental concerns associated with the use of fossil fuels for producing electricity and transportation fuels. Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

Blast vibration induces sounds within neighboring residences. A housewide vibration and sound monitoring system was installed in a West Virginia home subjected to blasts from various distances and directions. Eighty-nine blast events were monitored and analyzed. Fifteen channels of data were collected, including data from three triaxial geophones, one airblast microphone, one uniaxial geophone mounted on the wall of the house (response channel) and four microphones that recorded CD-quality sound waves inside the house. Each of these channels was recorded on the same time scale. The response channel signal was easily separated into ground vibration and airblast-induced movement, due to differences in the time of arrival. This response channel was then compared to the sounds recorded to determine which component of blast vibration induced the maximum sound response. Blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast, while for blasts beyond 762 meters (2,500 feet), the maximum sound response was caused by ground vibration without exception. When airblast was identified as the dominant sound generator, the peak amplitude of the sound was directly related to the amplitude of airblast. When ground vibration was identified as the dominant sound generator, the peak amplitude of sound was not related to the amplitude of ground vibration. Findings from frequency analysis showed that the frequency content of sounds inside the house was not related to the frequency content of airblast or ground vibration, regardless of source. This finding suggests that residents will have difficulty determining the source of blast-induced noise in their homes. The proposed airblast response factor (ABRF) can aid blasting operations to determine the dominant source of sounds inside a complainant’s house based on the time-of-arrival relationships. With this site-specific information, public relations responses can be developed accordingly.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kw (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.

Ensuring adequate ventilation is a critical aspect of safety in underground mining operations. In small-scale mines in particular, key ventilation parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity are often measured manually and only at infrequent intervals, typically using analog instruments. As a result, real-time monitoring of environmental changes, timely detection of hazardous situations, and demand-driven ventilation control are not feasible. This presentation discusses the selection and evaluation of modern digital ventilation measurement devices, including handheld instruments with digital data logging capabilities and continuously operating sensors with potential for real-time data transmission. The investigations focus on the challenges posed by underground environments with extremely high humidity levels, which can adversely affect sensor performance and electronic components. The results are based on testing conducted at the Research and Teaching Mine of TU Bergakademie Freiberg—an underground ore mine characterized by humidity levels exceeding 95%. Findings include assessments of measurement accuracy, reliability, and practical applicability under these demanding conditions.

Selenium (Se) in effluent waters has become a significant challenge for a number of industries. Toxicity studies and new reports of occurrence have certainly caused increased scrutiny and actions in the mining industry today (Sandy, DiSante, 2010). While initial activity in addressing selenium-laden waters were conducted in the coal mining industry, today a much broader range of mine types are beginning to search for solutions to selenium treatment of their mining waters, including both hard rock mining operations (gold, nickel, zinc, etc.) and soft rock mining (phosphate, uranium, etc.) Throughout North America, new regulations covering selenium discharge are either in place or being developed. While a number of physical/chemical approaches show promise in selenium treatment, when considering optimal cost and treatment efficacy issues, biological treatment ? particularly fixed-film biological treatment - is reported to be one of the most promising approaches to managing selenium-containing waters. Among biological treatment options, the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) has undergone extensive pilot testing for Se treatment in the last three years, including eight pilot programs, and the first FBR system is now operating at a coal mining site. In all tests, the FBR has been shown to be a highly cost-effective approach to selenium treatment based on its physical and performance characteristics. This is consistent with its history for reaching low levels of treatment in similar service for other oxyanions including perchlorate, nitrate and various metals. With the results from the most recent testing, the technology has been shown to be adaptable to an ever-broadening range of influent water conditions and flow rates, in varying terrains and weather conditions. Selenium occurs in various valence states from -2 to +6 (Sobolewski, 2005). The speciation of selenium plays a critical role in understanding the effectiveness of any approach for removal, especially to low levels. Elemental selenium is insoluble and has little effect on living organisms. Colloidal fractions are known to occur. In aqueous environments such as coal mining runoff, selenium is most often found as the oxygenated anions of selenite (SeO32-, Se4+) and selenate, (SeO42-, Se6+). Selenium is commonly found in mining waters in concentrations ranging from 3 to >12,000 µg/L. The U.S. National Primary Drinking Water Standard MCL is 50 µg/L for selenium (EU 10 µg/L; WHO 40 µg/L). The National Fresh Water Quality Standard is 5 µg/L for selenium. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended that the National Fresh Water Quality Standard be lowered to 2 µg/L to protect fish, waterfowl, and endangered aquatic species. Several states have followed with enforcement actions at these same low levels. In Canada, permits may require stakeholders to monitor levels in water or biota, or to comply with guidelines, at either the National or Provincial levels, which can be as low as 1 or 2 µg/L in surface waters. Treatment of selenium in all mining waters presents a series of challenges. It can be present in relatively dilute concentrations and in streams with variable and often high flow rates. It can be present in many soluble and particulate forms, which may affect process design and treatability. The conditions of influent selenium-containing waters can vary, with issues such as temperature, pH, total dissolved solids and other contaminants affecting the ability to remove selenium selectively and economically. Treatment of selenium often results in the generation of a concentrated by-product requiring disposal, and re-release from residuals can occur. Beyond these issues, the physical environment of a mining operation can offer challenges such as remoteness and harsh and/or cold weather. Currently available selenium treatment technology (Table 1) includes biological treatment and a number of physical-chemical processes ? such as ion exchange, membrane filtration and adsorption ? that vary widely in efficiency and cost. Most treatment options remain either too costly and/or unproven for selenium-containing streams for reasons that include poor removal efficiency, variability in volume and composition of influents, system sizing and logistics considerations, as well as operating requirements.

Comminution represents one of the major costs of mineral recovery from low-grade ores. Efficient mineral recovery in a typical low-grade ore grinding-flo¬tation process depends on grinding the ore small enough to liberate mineralization without producing excessive slimes, which would result in higher power and flotation reagent costs. Size criteria for efficient grinding should be stated in terms of the distribution of mineralization sizes, but as the mineralization-size distribution is difficult to determine, less desirable criteria of absolute particle-size distribution (PSD) are used in practice. Thus, there is considerable incentive to be able to analyze and predict the PSD performance of grinding circuits for control and optimization of the process. Any realistic model of a grinding circuit must account for recycle of oversize material; such oversize recycle adds to the total mill load and limits total production rate. Simulation of such closed-circuit operation to study grind factors affecting total throughput can be done in a straightforward fashion provided recycle calculations can be added to an accurate input-output model of PSD in the grinding mill itself. Such a total simulation of mill performance is of obvious practical value in assessing the practicality and benefits of various over-all mill control schemes and/or modes of operation. For example, considerable interest has been shown in the development of continuous on-line particle-size sensors and such instruments should be an operating reality in a few years. A total closed-circuit PSD model of this type would be invaluable in the utilization of, and in predicting the pay-out from, such an on-line particle-size sensor. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to the development of an input-output PSD model of a grinding mill. The model is continuous in the par¬ticle size coordinate, L, and is based on the principle of a particle population balance along the particle size coordinate.
