ONLY in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be con-templating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist's chief complaint in life is a dual one-inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground-geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the :geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the effecient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most, skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted.

R. T. Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—In the analysis of mill products containing minerals of appreciable difference in specific gravity the well-known principle of the method described by Stanley is applied in a number of ways for a variety of problems. The use of Le Chatelier bottle as explained in the paper may be a dependable and sufficiently accurate way, although no information is given as to the reproducibility of the specific gravity determinations. In the case of MacIntyre ore the method is applied for three separate products produced apparently without reagents and relatively free of fine slimes. Should it be applied for flotation products carrying a substantial amount of slimes, difficulties should be anticipated in the process of eliminating air inclusions from the sample. The difficulties mentioned above may be overcome by the use of a volumeter, an instrument designed for specific gravity determinations of finely divided solids in dry state. This instrument, see Fig. 4, is manufactured by F. Süffert-Bürner A. G. in Basel, Switzerland. Its operation is based on the law of Boyle and Mariotte. With the use of the volumeter, the specific gravities of test samples having a total volume of about 30 cm are easily reproducible within ±2 units in the second decimal of the specific gravity figure, and even better than that with utmost care. This accuracy is sufficient for ordinary operational control. How closely the specific gravity determinations follow the respective chemical assays depends primarily on the nature of the sample itself. In this respect no specific gravity instrument can give better results than those justified by the consistency of mineral distribution in samples analyzed.

Within the past few years, the mining industry has taken a new impetus in all its branches. New mines are being opened every day, while old ones, which have been either working at a loss, or have been compelled to shut down, are now gradually being reopened and placed on a paying basis. This growth and new life is due, in a measure, to the discovery of new mining districts, but the most important cause of the progress is the wonderful advance that has been made in all branches of mine-engineering. THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as . much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. NOW continuing with the preparation of the moulds I say that it is necessary to give the greatest attention to the differences of the clays as well as to the differences of those things that you wish to mould; and to know that every concavity in the mould produces a convexity and every convexity a hollow following the shape of the original pattern that you have. The pattern should be a body of a harder mated than the thing [78] you wish to mould with and of a substance that is not swollen or disintegrated by moisture. Its archetype may be of marble, bronze, lead, or any other metal, or also of wood, wax, tallow, gypsum, sulphur, or other plaster compositions-in short, of whatever you may have or whatever succeeds best for you, depending on whether the works are large or small and easy or &cult to mould. If you wish to cast them in bronze, you must mould them with loam, covering them with it and then drying it. There are some things in which it is enough to form only one part, such as half- or bas-reliefs. These are easy if they have no undercuts. Some other patterns that are easily handled are formed in two halves, or in three or four pieces, if they are of a hard material. There are also moulds for large statues, which, if one desires to make them of bronze, are first made of wax according to the ordinary procedure. I have in mind to describe every one of these processes in their own place. There are like- wise some moulds that are difficult to make, like scenes on a plane to which figures in full relief are attached, or twisted ornaments or other detached things that cannot be withdrawn from the mould without break-

Manufacture of lightweight concrete aggregate from common shale is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the field of nonmetallic or industrial minerals. Although expanded shale" has been in use since it was developed by Stephen J. Hayde in 1917, it was not until after World War II that it became a substantial competitor with other aggregates. There are some 70 plants now producing this aggregate in the United States, approximately half of them in states west of the Mississippi River. Expanding plants throughout the U. S. are grouped around major urban centers such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Denver. Concrete made with expanded shale aggregate combines the desirable features of low weight with relatively high strength, making it especially useful in concrete block, in structural concrete for multi-story buildings and in a variety of specialized concrete products such as prestressed panels and beams, and storage tanks. As the cost of construction continues to rise, lightweight concrete will probably be used in increasing quantities because of its low cost relative to the more traditional construction materials such as wood, brick and steel

The effect of treatment with ferrochrome lignosul-fonate on both sodium and calcium bentonites has been examined. In the early stages of treatment it appears that some base exchange of iron and chromium for sodium may occur with the sodium bentonite. Such exchange appears specific for exchange of sodium ions when the calcium ion concentration represents 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchangeable cations, and when additions of lignosulfonate are less than 1 lb per bbl. Adsorption appears entirely physical above 1 lb per bbl treatment level for all concentrations of calcium studied. Gel strength and plastic viscosity of both calcium and sodium bentonite systems were reduced with treatments of ferrochrome lignosulfonate up to 2 Ib per bbl, the greatest reduction occurring within a range of calcium concentration of 40-5.5 per cent of the total exchange capacity of the clay. INTRODUCTION The problem of control of viscosity and gel strength of drilling fluids by the action of thinners or dispersants has been studied by many investigators.1-7 In addition, much work has been done on formation of gel structure in clay suspensions. However, gel formation and structure still are incompletely understood, and the use of the various dispersing chemicals is based, to a large extent, on data almost entirely empirical in nature. In recent years the lignosulfonates have become increasingly important in the treatment and control of drilling fluids. More specifically, ferrochrome lignosulfonate has found rather wide acceptance, particularly in calcium systems.5-7 Lignosulfonates are refined lignin products made from spent sulfite liquor from which the fermentable sugars have been removed.15 The exact structure of lignin is not known; however, it is believed to be a phenolic propane type polymer which may exist as a branched chain or cross linked structure. The molecular weights of lignosulfonates probably range from 300 to 100,000 or more.15 A better understanding of the mechanism of adsorption of dispersants is essential before improvement and development of characteristics of drilling fluids and drilling fluid control is possible. This investigation was undertaken to determine the action of ferrochrome lignosulfonate on sodium and calcium montmOrillonite' LABORATORY INVESTIGATION A Stormer viscosimeter and Fann V-G meter were used to measure viscosity and gel strength. A Zeiss spectrophotometer was used for analysis of Fe and Cr and the flame attachment was employed in the analysis of Na, Ca and Mg. A General Electric X-ray diffraction unit utilizing Copper Ka radiation and a Ni-filter was utilized in the X-ray studies. PROCEDURE Two systems were studied. Predominately sodium clay, obtained from Wyoming, and a predominately calcium clay from Texas were used. These particular samples were chosen because of the extensive work of characterization completed by Mungan. Ionic base exchange capacity determined by flame photometry and total exchange capacity by the Kjehldahl method were obtained experimentally. A 7-per cent suspension of the sodium clay and a 20-per cent suspension of the calcium clay in distilled water were prepared by mixing with a high-speed mixer. The suspensions were allowed to stand for two weeks for complete hydration. Calcium chloride was added to portions of the sodium and calcium cla suspensions to obtain suspensions varying in Ca++ concentration as shown in Table I. A series of treatments was run with 500-ml portions of the original suspensions using a ferrochrome lignosulfonate. Treatment was carried out in the same way with each of the suspensions of varying Ca concentration. Viscosity and gel strength were measured and a filtrate obtained at each treatment level. Ten ml of filtrate were diluted to 50 ml, and aliquot portions of the 50 ml were taken for the Na, Ca, and Mg analysis by the flame photometer. The pH of these filtrates ranged from 7 to 7.3. Cold rolling by 50 pct a A1-4 pct Cu alloy containing many 0' plates has been found to accelerate markedly the transformation of 8' to 0 upon further aging. Although the basic mechanism of this transformation remains unchanged by plastic deformation, the nuclea-tion kinetics of 8 become appreciably more rapid and also less dependent upon temperature. Particularly at lower aging temperatures, rounded idiomorphs replace several faceted rnorphologfes. The rates of growth of 9 idiomorphs in deformed specimens aged at 300°C are appreciably more rapid than simple volume diffusion control allows. This observation is shown to be explained by an excess vacancy, rather than by a dislocation Piping mechanism of growth. ThE rather complex phenomenology of the 8' —8 transformation in Al-Cu alloys has been recently elucidated in considerable detail by means of transmission electron microscopy.'-4 This technique was also employed in the present investigation in order to examine the effects of plastic deformation upon the transformation of 8' to 8. The mechanism of the transformation in undeformed Al-Cu alloys has been established as the following sequence of events.1"4 The first step is the nucleation of 9 at (Y:8' boundaries. Nucleation of a 0 crystal takes place, however, at only a very small proportion of the 8' plates present. Each 0 crystal simultaneously consumes the host 8' plate and the a! in the immediate vicinity, with growth into a being the rate-controlling process. The remaining 8' plates are then dissolved as they fall under the concentration shadow of the growing 8 crystals. The evidence on the effects of plastic deformation upon these processes is intriguing, but much less detailed. The careful X-ray studies of Graf and Guinier have shown that the aging times required to form detectable amounts of 8' and 8 are reduced by prior cold working. Thomas and Nutting confirmed these results by replication electron microscopy. Nile-shwar,* on the other hand, reported that creep deformation decreases the rate of formation of 0. While this difference may have been caused by the use of concurrent rather than successive deformation and ag- ing, the X-ray technique which he used was able to monitor only the 0 phase. It is thus possible that the times needed to form 8' were increased moreg than the kinetics of 8' — 8 transformation were accelerated. At 90 pct deformation by cold rolling, Graf and Guinier found that the usual 0' —0 8 sequence is reversed: 0 forms first. von Heimendahl 10 confirmed this result with transmission electron microscopy. Pollard and Nutting, 11 and more recently Driver and Barrand, 9 having used the same technique, report that 9 also forms first during creep deformation. In the present study, the maximum amount of deformation was limited to 50 pct reduction by cold rolling in order to insure that 8 formed principally by the decomposition of . I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This investigation was conducted on an Al- 3.93 pct Cu alloy, prepared as previously described. 4 Morphological and crystallographic effects of plastic deformation were studied in specimens annealed 6 hr at 548°C, quenched, and then aged for either 3 or 8 hr at 250°C to form large numbers of 0' plates. The oxidation rates of copper have been determined at temperatures from 600" to 900°C in oxygen from 14.7 to 400 psi total oxygen pressure. The oxidation rate of copper is unchanged by oxygen pressures within the range studied. The observed data extend Feit-knecht's conclusion concerning the pressure independence of copper from atmospheric pressure to 400 psi. All samples studied in the above-mentioned temperature and pressure range have both Cu2O and CuO present in the oxide film. NUMEROUS papers have been published on the oxidation of copper, some of which have noted the effect of oxygen pressure on the oxidation rate of copper. It must be noted, however, that no data on the oxidation rates of copper at pressure in excess of 1 atm have been reported in the literature. (Le Chatelier¹ reported that a black oxide of silver was formed at 300°C and 15 atm pressure.) This is likewise true for the other metals. This investigation was initiated to obtain experimental oxidation rate constants for pure metals at elevated temperatures and high oxygen pressure. Copper was selected as the first metal since probably more reliable data are available on its oxidation rates and related physical and chemical properties than for any other metal or alloy. As a general summary, the following conclusions appear well established for the oxidation of copper: 1—The oxide coating consists of Cu2O with a superficial coating of CuO providing the ambient oxygen pressure exceeds the equilibrium pressure for the coexistence of Cu2O and CuO.² The following sequence of phases is then Cu/Cu2O/CuO/O2 (gas). The Cu2O consists of large crystals that have no relation to the orientation of the metal crystals, except for a very thin layer adjacent to the metal." The CuO consists of very fine crystals randomly oriented. If the oxygen pressure is below the equilibrium pressure for the coexistence of Cu2O and CuO, the coating consists of Cu,O only. 2—The rate-determining factor in the parabolic oxidation of copper is the diffusion of Cu+ ions through the Cu,O layer.4,6,7 The Cu+ ions are accompanied by electrons to maintain electrical neutrality. The mechanism of the reaction at the Cu2O/CuO interface and the method of growth of the CuO is in some doubt. 3—On copper, there are three reported pressure effects: (a) At pressures below 0.3 mm Hg oxygen pressure, the oxidation rate increases directly with pressure.', ' .Vxygen starvation at the surface may account for this effect. (b) At oxygen pressures from 0.3 to 63 mm, the oxidation rate increases as the 7th root of the oxygen pressure providing the temperature is such that only Cu2O is present in the film. (c) At pressures from above the equilibrium pressure for the coexistence of Cu2O and CuO (varies with temperature) to atmospheric pressure, the oxidation rate is independent of the oxygen pressure.' Equipment In order to determine the oxidation rates of metals in an oxidizing atmosphere at pressures up to 400 psi, the equipment is somewhat different than for low pressure work as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A Leeds and Northrup Micromax recording controller (A) is used to control the temperature of the Ni-chrome furnace winding in conjunction with a Micromax electric drive unit. The drive unit adjusts a 20 amp Variac (variable transformer) to control the power input into the Nichrome furnace winding. Due to the "self heating" of the sample by oxidation, frequently encountered in oxidation rate studies, it is essential that the sample temperature be measured independently. This is done by means of a series of six chromel-alumel calibrated thermocouples located spirally around the oxidizing metal sample. IRON and steel scrap has again become page one news, as it was during the war. To many this is anomalous because the common concept is that the theaters of war are literally paved with scrap as the by-product of war damage and abandoned materiel. To an extent this is true, the bottleneck being the ferreting out and transportation of this scrap. While you as consumers of the electric-furnace grades of scrap-the premium grades-are concerned primarily in only one segment of the scrap market, I believe you ill be interested in a general discussion of the market with subsequent funneling down to your specialty.

Ossi E. Palasvirta (Development Engineer, Oliver Iron Mining Diu., U. S. Steel Gorp.)—The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant" and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawing' batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure' was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil. The preliminary tests in the laboratory at first seemed to indicate that although depolarization of the filter feed decreases the cake moisture, it also tends to decrease the thickness of the cake, thus decreasing filtering rate. The tests with the 4-ft disk filter soon showed, however, that the compactness of the cake, attained during the form period because of depolarization, permitted a considerable decrease in drying time without any sacrifice in final moisture content. Thus, the filter could be operated at a much higher speed, and the overall capacity was higher than with magnetized feed. Because of the great compactness of the cake there was little shrinkage during the drying period, which prevented cracking and subsequent loss in vacuum. This in turn permitted operation with as thick a feed pulp as the diaphragm pumps could handle, eliminating the necessity of pulp density control. On the basis of these findings, the 6-ft agitating disk filter has been operated at 2 rpm, using feed pulps varying from 65 to 73 pct solids. Initially Saran 601 was used as medium, but it was later replaced with a relatively open, tight-twist nylon cloth. Filtering rates up to 750 lb per ft- er hr can be attained with feeds averaging about 70 pct- 270 mesh, and there is no trouble because of cracking. The cake moistures vary between 8.5 and 9.5 pct. To recapitulate, the merits of depolarizing the filter feed may be summed up as follows: 1) The well dispersed pulp shows less tendency to settle in the filter tank. 2) The homogeneous filter pool results in more even cake formation. 3) Because of absence of flocs, great compactness of cake is attained during the form period. 4) The cake does not tend to crack during the drying period. 5) A drier cake is produced. 6) A shorter drying period is necessary, permitting higher operating speed, which in turn results in increased capacity. 7) Density of the feed pulp can be kept as high as the equipment can handle. This increases capacity, since it is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the pool. A few tests were also made to study the effect of chemical flocculants on filtration efficiency. Results showed that the effects of chemical and magnetic floc-culation were quite similar. Thus the use of a floccu-lant would impair rather than improve the filtering of magnetite concentrate. A. F. Palasvirta for his comments, particularly in view of the encouraging results obtained with demagnetized taconite concentrate. In our studies an attempt was made to evaluate the effects of depolarizing the feed to the plant filters by passing the slurry through a coil, similar to the method described by Palasvirta. Unfortunately, in our experiments there were no startling improvements in performance level, neither cake rate increase nor cake moisture reduction. However, when slow filter cycle speeds were employed, the filter cake tended to crack and the vacuum level dropped, resulting in an increase in cake moisture content. When demagnetized feed was used during slow speeds, no cake cracking was evidenced and the vacuum level remained constant. Thus the depolarizing coil was found necessary only in cases of cracking. It should be noted that most of our test work concerned a feed of 85 to 90 pct —335 mesh and about 60 pct by weight solids concentration. This contrasts with 70 pct —270 mesh and 65 to 73 pct by weight solids as noted by Palasvirta. Reviewing both sets of results, it might be concluded that depolarizing may be successfully employed to alleviate cake cracking tendencies and may markedly improve cake rates and moistures on the coarser taconite concentrates. Further investigations may disclose the exact relationship of grind and pulp density to the depolarizing action.

FOREWORD A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical. Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. A combination of two factors in addition to the current Federal drilling and price regulations reduced by 120 from I942 the number of new wells completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during the year. No new prospective area was found comparable to the Armbrust gas pool, Westmoreland Co., which accounted for a seventh of the last year's drilling, and it is considered doubtful whether, even if such a field had been discovered, the drilling contractors, who have been seriously affected by the manpower shortage, could have drilled many more wells than they did during the year. New wells totaling 445 were completed for a combined footage of over 1,250,000 Dry holes numbered 131 and had a footage of nearly 400,000. Old wells drilled deeper total 55, of which 17 were found nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil Oil completions yielded an initial of only slightly over one hundred barrels from 21 wells for about the same per well average as that of a year ago. However, 65 bbl. of this total came from two wells in two new strikes. The footage drilled of nearly 33,000 gives an average of nearly I00 ft. less per well than a year ago. Two old wells drilled deeper had a combined initial of only 4 bbl. The largest oil well of the year, 40 bbl., was found in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of 3492 ft. in German township, Fayette County. The location is several miles east of the nearest oil production hut as the area that could be occupied by a pool is fairly well delimited by drilling, the extent of this production would not appear to be large. The other notable oil production was found in the Dunkard (Penna.) sand, Cumberland township, Greene County, at a depth of 1065 ft. Here the first well had an initial of g bbl. and the second 25 bbl. However, a third proved dry, and as this area is also delimited by drilling, the pool doubtless will be of small area. Gas Gas completions yielded an initial of slightly over one hundred million cubic feet per day and new wells, totaling 303, account for all but four million of this volume. Old wells drilled deeper, numbering 35, found gas. The per well average in new drilling of approximately 320 M cu. ft. is nearly 165 M cu. ft. less than a year ago and the total footage is slightly over 830,000, which is about a quarter of a million feet less than in 1942. Average rock pressure of new completions is approximately 365 lb. per sq. in. The entire volume of new production is from the Upper Devonian or higher stratigraphic horizons. In Allegheny County, the grestest activity was in Forward and Plum townships. Wells there account for more than one half the completions. Knowledge of the diffusivity of carbon in the low temperature form of iron (alpha iron existing below 910°C) is at the moment of considerable interest in the study of the decomposition of austenite and martensite, the elastic after-effect,123 the magnetic after-effect4 and the decarburization of steel below 910°C. Information on the solubility of carbon in iron, and to a lesser extent its diffusion, is also important in consideration of such phenomena as blue-brittleness, temper-brittleness, "magnetic" aging, quench-aging, strain-aging, and possibly the yield point. In order to obtain more information on these subjects more fundamental knowledge is necessary. It is the purpose of this work to present data on the diffusion and solubility of carbon in the alpha iron. The high temperature form of iron (gamma; face-centered cubic) existing above 910°C is capable of dissolving relatively large amounts of carbon, up to 1.7 pet at 1130°C, while the low temperature form (alpha, body-centered cubic) existing below 910° dissolves only a limited maximum amount of less than 0.02 pet carbon at 725°C, according to data obtained here. Since the solubility of carbon in the face-centered or gamma iron is large, relatively speaking, no great analytical difficulties have been encountered in the determination of the solubility lines5 or of the diffusion of carbon.0 The limited solubility of carbon in alpha iron offers difficulties because experimental procedures and analytical methods for low carbon contents below say 0.01 pet have to be more refined than techniques used for work with gamma iron. Because of the difficulties of applying conventional methods to the determination of the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron, virtually no work has been done on this subject. However, by proper refinement of the analytical method for small amounts of carbon, the determination of the diffusion coefficient can be made readily using modified procedures. The solubility of carbon in alpha iron has been determined over a temperature range by various investigators, but the agreement among them is poor. The present investigation establishes the limits quite accurately. Information of this kind is useful in establishing the correctness of equilibrium diagrams but, more significantly, such information on maximum solubilities, especially when extended to alloyed ferrites, should be extremely important in the study of aging and related phenomena. Literature The literature existing on the diffusion, in particular, and on the solubility of carbon in alpha iron is not extensive. The data which exist are not of a high order of accuracy, much of them being in the realm of conjecture. THE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Whiteley7 made the qualitative ob- servation, using metallographic techniques, that the rate of diffusion of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was very rapid and that its diffusion was still rapid at 550°C. Snoek,4 studying the magnetic aftereffect in high purity iron, arrived at the conclusion that the after-effect could be explained by the presence of small amounts of carbon diffusing under the influence of magnetostrictive strain (lattice distortion due to magnetic interaction). In later work, Snoek8 made an estimate of the ratio of carbon diffusion in alpha to its diffusion in gamma iron, and concluded that for a temperature of 910°C the ratio of Da/D? was 2600. Polder,9 basing his calculations of D on relaxation phenomena in the elastic after-effect, estimated that Da is about 1/3 of D? at 910°C (1183°K) and is about 1/12 of Dy at 727°C (1000°K). Polder's equation for the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron was calculated to be 18000 D = 5.2 X 10-4 e-RT cm2 per sec Ham10 obtained data for the diffusion and solid solubility of carbon in alpha iron at two temperatures by using one technique similar to that employed in this study. He found a D of 8.0 X 10-7 cm2 per sec at 702°C and of 2.7 X 10-7 at 648°C. THE SOLUBILITY OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Although pearlite is absent in steels containing 0.06 pet,11 0.05 pet,12 or 0.045 pet C,13 it appears that the carbon in these steels cannot be in solution in ferrite. The solubility of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was first determined by Scott14 on the basis of cooling curves, and was found to be between 0.03 and 0.04 pet C. Tamura15 by interpolating between the solubility of carbon in delta iron at 1400°C and in alpha at room temperature (assuming zero solubility) ar-
