Durante a produção de arames pelo processo de trefilação diversas falhas superficiais e internas podem ocorrer. Esses defeitos podem ocasionar fratura do arame no processo dos clientes. Um dos defeitos mais clássicos na trefila, denominado “pé de corvo” ou “Chevron”, foi estudado neste trabalho. As principais causas desse defeito estão ligadas à falhas no processo de lubrificação, podendo ser relacionados ao tipo e quantidade de sabão usados durante a trefilação, como também a ocorrência de defeitos no fio máquina empregado e ou, “caminho do arame”. Para esse estudo, diversos defeitos superficiais em fio máquina foram selecionados e então posteriormente trefilados observando a ocorrência do problema nos arames produzidos. Os defeitos superficiais no fio máquina foram coletados de bobinas segregadas no estoque e foram soldados e identificados, a fim de facilitar posterior localização do defeito. A partir do estudo foi possível identificar as causas da ocorrência das falhas por defeito de pé de corvo e propor medidas preventivas que mitigassem o problema.

Durante os reparos gerais nos conversores LD da CSN, as atividades de refratamento como demolição a quente, troca das ventaneiras, montagem do canal de vazamento e montagem do revestimento de trabalho e permanente, fazem parte do caminho critico do cronograma e são diretamente responsáveis pela dinâmica do evento. A montagem do canal de vazamento demandava uma série de atividades que exigiam maior tempo para execução e suporte para atividades em espaço confinado. Este trabalho apresenta sinergia entre fornecedores e diversas áreas envolvidas na montagem do canal de vazamento, onde a metodologia empregada resultou em redução no tempo de execução da atividade, disponibilidade da mão de obra e segurança operacional.

Due to the increasingly stringent requirements and the needs of the automotive industry, galvanizing lines for automotive products have to be modernized and improved. Beginning of 2017, SEGAL, a Tata Steel CGL located in BELGIUM and fully dedicated to automotive market, placed an order to increase the line capacity from 550kt/year to 600kt/year to process a wider range of steel grades and improve the product quality according to automotive requirements. To improve quality, a major revamping of the skin pass was necessary. The objectives were first to increase the work roll diameter from Φ560mm to Φ650mm to be able to transfer the required roughness with low elongation on soft material and second to increase the rolling force and tension to reach higher elongation on high strength steels. The result was the adaptation of the whole skin pass mechanics. Old mechanical elongation system has been replaced by a completely new single AC motor with helical gearbox at each bridle roll. John Cockerill achieved such complicated revamping in a very short time since the shutdown started only 6 month after the contract signature. The shutdown down schedule has been optimized with pre-erection works and the teams working 24/7 to implement all the changes. The complete project (skin pass, furnace, loopers) have been adapted during the three weeks shutdown. Today the customer can use both 560mm and 650mm work roll diameters. Thanks to the use of the new 650mm work roll diameter, the customer is able to make the same elongation using a bigger roll force (average 20% more), which has strongly improved the roughness transfer to the strip and the removal of the defects. SEGAL is really satisfied able to produce and supply higher quality automotive products to his customers.

There are a few ways to impact the capacity of a reciprocating compressor, by altering suction and discharge pressure and recirculation. By reducing the pressure drop in the section before the compressor it is possible to provide a higher suction pressure and subsequently achieve a higher compressor flow rate. The increase in the suction pressure while maintaining the discharge pressure reduced the demanded compressor Head. When considering oxygen compressors it is necessary to cautiously evaluate the safety norms and parameters due to the risk of explosions and fires due to high oxygen velocity.

The origin and elimination of 3rd octave mill chatter is a frequently investigated topic since tandem cold mills are in operation. So far only chatter monitoring systems have been successfully deployed, but this implies speed reductions and therefore a significant loss in mill output. Primetals Technologies has developed a new system using active injection of damping in order to eliminate 3rd octave mill chatter. The new hydraulics-based ChatterBlock® Control has now been proven successfully in mill operation. 3rd octave mill chatter, typically occurring in a frequency range between 90 and 150Hz, is a self-excited vibration phenomena typically occurring in the rear stands of tandem cold mills. It can produce significant gauge variations and even cause strip breaks. 3rd octave mill chatter is characterized by a quickly diverging vertical vibration of the rolls for specific rolling conditions (material, mill speed, forces, gauge etc.). Its occurrence requires immediate speed reduction of the mill in order to avoid strip breakage and/or strip quality degradation. This phenomenon thus severely limits mill productivity. The first step to proof the industrial feasibility of the new system was its installation on stand no. 4 of a 5-stand tandem mill. The development process and first results of the industrial implementation will be presented in this paper.

Estudou-se o comportamento dos aços inoxidáveis AISI 304 e 316, quanto à corrosão causada pelo caldo da cana-de-açúcar nos processos que simulam a sua extração. Devido a inviabilidade de realização dos ensaios de imersão utilizando o próprio caldo da cana-deaçúcar de pH médio de 5,5, pela deterioração do caldo e da variedade da concentração devido a variedade da cana, do tempo de maturação e das condições ambientais expostas, foi utilizado o ácido cítrico, que é o precursor do ácido transaconítico, sendo este o ácido encontrado em maior concentração no caldo da cana, utilizando-se uma solução de 10% em massa, apresentando pH em torno de 5,0 [1]. As amostras permaneceram imersas por vários períodos de tempo, sendo que para tornar o ensaio acelerado, a solução foi submetida à ebulição durante todo período que as amostras ficaram imersas. Ao final de cada um dos períodos, os corpos de prova foram limpos, pesados e avaliados na relação de perda de massa por área, tendo-se medido a massa inicial bem como a área superficial inicial das mesmas. Foram obtidos resultados interessantes que mostram o ataque diferenciado da solução ácida a estes dois aços inoxidáveis, onde se observou a presença de “pites”, cujo tamanho e quantidade dos mesmos foram diferentes, sendo que o AISI 304 foi o que sofreu maior ataque.

Nesse artigo, foram desenvolvidos experimentos que visam determinar e avaliar a microestrutura presente em tubos de polímero reforçado por fibra de vidro. O trabalho apresenta uma breve introdução do processo de obtenção das fibras de vidro através da pultrusão e suas vantagens e aplicações. As técnicas de caracterização microestrutural são listadas e explicadas bem como a finalidade de se realizar esse procedimento. As amostras foram envelhecidas no forno a uma temperatura próxima da deterioração e depois resfriadas à água e ao ar. Após isso, foi feito ensaio de achatamento nas amostras a fim de se determinar se o envelhecimento afeta o grau de deformação da amostra até ela se romper.

Sinter has high participation in the blast furnaces ferrous burden in ArcelorMittal Tubarão, being therefore of paramount importance the constant control of its physical, chemical and metallurgical qualities, aiming at the fulfillment of the client required quality. With the great challenges faced by market conditions, steelmaking companies seek operational sustainability, aiming at stability and reducing costs. One of the main steps to obtain these results in the Blast Furnaces is the raw materials quality stabilization, in order to guarantee the perfect burden distribution control and a better use of the reductant gas inside the reactor, aiming a lower fuels consumption. It is known that the smaller a ferrous particle is, better its reducibility, since a larger surface area provides greater contact with the reductant agent. Based on this concept, the objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the sinter size produced in ArcelorMittal Tubarão Sinter Plant in its reducibility, and in this way enable the definition of a better sinter particle size distribution aiming at a balance between the permeability effects and gaseous yield in the Blast Furnaces. In addition, the reducibility effects on sinter size reduction were evaluated, where the 5 to 10 mm fraction was analyzed in two sinter samples, the first obtained from the conventional route and the second after crushing of the fraction over 50 mm, in order to simulate the effect of the use of a Secondary Crusher in Sintering.

This paper presents a unique stirred milling technology, Outotec HIGmill™, a modern, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding being tested in an industrial scale level. The test was performed at an iron ore pellet producing plant in Sweden (for confidentiality reasons, it will be referred to only as “the client”) where a pilot HIGmill™ unit (HIG25) was installed parallel to a conventional regrind circuit to compare its performance to the existing ball mill. By using a continuous test run procedure and evaluating the parameters of F80, P80, mill shaft rotation speed and power drawn it was determined its grinding capabilities, operational flexibility and energy efficiency. Outotec HIGmill™ outperformed the existing ball mill in the plant proving its capabilities to grinding finer, with steeper particle size distribution (PSD) and much higher energy efficiency. The tests performed showed that, with further refining of its operation, it is capable of consistently deliver the required PSD with up to 30% higher grinding efficiency.

Existem vários tipos de compressores centrífugos de gás, mas em todos o sistema de controle de capacidade influencia diretamente a performance do compressor e também a capacidade máxima de compressão do mesmo. O Controle de Capacidade do Compressor por ser realizado a partir de válvulas tanto na sução bem como na descarga em forma de vent ou mesmo uma válvula em forma de recirculação. Todos os sistemas operam como forma de controle de capacidade mas o mais eficiente é por meio de controle por uma válvula na sucção do compressor, pois tanto a recirculação como um vent na descarga não reduzem o consumo de energia elétrica de forma eficiente pela vazão entregue. Neste trabalho trataremos particularmente de um controle de capacidade por meio de válvulas de sucção em compressores de nitrogênio centrífugos procurando uma forma mais eficiente de compressão e também elevar a capacidade de compressão.

O policarbonato é um polímero quimicamente neutro, 100% reciclável, resistente a altas temperaturas, impermeável, durável que oferece uma combinação fantástica das suas propriedades físicas, químicas, mecânicas, térmicas e eléctricas (isolante eléctrico). O policarbonato é um dos plásticos de maior venda e que mostra a maior taxa de crescimento anual no mundo, devido às suas excepcionais propriedades e versatilidade de aplicação e uso. Devido à grande utilização de polímeros nas mais diversas aplicações ao ar livre, surgiu a necessidade de estudar sua resistência às intempéries, não somente por aspectos estéticos, como descoloração ou perda de brilho, mas também por mudanças nas suas propriedades. Os polímeros quando expostos a luz solar na presença de oxigênio são degradados, no entanto as taxas de degradação foto-oxidativa dependem fortemente da natureza química do polímero. Durante o processo de degradação ocorrem mudanças físicas e químicas no polímero que levam à descoloração, fissuramento, perda de brilho e queda de resistência mecânica. Tais fenômenos estão quase sempre associados a processos de cisão de cadeia e, em alguns casos, ocorrem também reticulações. Para se avaliar a estabilidade, ou mesmo avaliar a eficiência de um polímero, é necessário submetê-los a ensaios que simulem as condições às quais ele estaria exposto durante a sua vida útil. Nesse contexto será apresentada uma avaliação sobre a degradação do polipropileno exposto a radiação ultravioleta.

n recent years, the market for thick plates has been highly competitive, in this scenario the plates quality is a critical success factor. In this process, the quality of the cut in thick plates is one of the important requirements for the customers, by the visual aspect as well as the technical aspect of the plate application. In the shear line, the cutting is done by shearing to trim tips, subdivide plates, trim side edges, remove samples, eliminate defects, etc. The cut is obtained by the penetration of the upper knife in the plate, causing plastic deformation in a certain region and hardening. If the clearance between the knives is adequate, the cracks will be close to the centre of the plate thickness and will result in a good cut quality. This work will present the theory of cutting of thick plates, the types of shearing, the quality of the edge in the cut, the types and the main characteristics of the knives.

The steel market is experiencing a difficult conjuncture: on the one hand steel producers minimize their investments while optimizing their over- production, on the other hand suppliers reduce their internal human resources and capacity in order to overcome the instability of the new era. A return to the steel production levels of the past is not expected in the short term. Research, development and plant concept optimization is one recipe to drive the future of the steel business. This article describes a new concept for a VOD plant developed as a result of thorough investigation and assessment of all possible solutions. A joint and tight cooperation with the final customer was necessary to reaching important results. This article consists of the contributions from the plant suppliers in terms of their experience and feedback, as well as the final user’s. In mid-2015 the steel industry faced a strong crisis due to the weak performance of the Brazilian economy and the persistent entry of Chinese steel into Brazilian territory. This situation demanded that Brazilian steelmakers seek to develop products to meet new export markets. within the volume of exports possible are the rebars, where its applications are in the construction industry. One of the largest importers is Peru which has a large percentage of this export volume. This market demands as a priority requirement the surface quality of blue condition (low oxidation index) and mechanical properties normative.in order to meet the items required by the customer at a competitive cost, a vanadium microalloyed steel was applied to the hot rolling process without heat treatment after the last rolling pass. Where the great challenge was to achieve a high level of stretching without compromising the minimum limits of tensile strength. Assuming that the steel used is the correct one interventions were made on rolling parameters such as set-point temperature, residence time of pieces in the furnace, linear mass and rolling speed. All the changes made were based on statistical tools and practical tests. Finally, with the execution of actions generated from the statistical analyzes and tests it was possible to reduce process losses by 96%.

State of the art sinter coolers are working based on the cross flow cooling principle. Thus, only a part of the thermal energy can be used for heat recovery application. The other part of the cooling air is brought unused to the environment. Furthermore, environmental regulation regarding dust emission and intelligent usage of exergy are getting stronger. Therefore, Primetals Technologies developed sinter coolers based on the counter flow principle. The cooling air passes the sinter bed in counter-flow direction enabling a direct heat transfer from the hot sinter to the air. The exhaust gas temperature can be maximized by using the total heat of the hot sinter. Due to the possible usage of the total exhaust gas amount, diffusive dust emission is reduced to zero. Two types of counter flow coolers are in the portfolio of Primetals Technologies. One type is based on a stationary shaft, in which the hot sinter is charged. The flow of the hot sinter is in vertical direction from top to bottom, in counter direction than the cooling air. The second type is a circular hopper cooler. The hot sinter is charged on top of a moving bed. At the bottom of the bed the sinter is discharged. The cooling air flows also from the bottom to the top, following the counter flow principle. Depending on the requirements, one of the two counter flow cooler types can be chosen for optimized and efficient cooling of hot sinter..

Eixos são componentes utilizados para transmissão de movimento e energia em máquinas. Os eixos são sujeitos à fadiga, visto que são submetidos à esforços combinados de flexão e torção cíclica. No presente estudo foi feita a análise de falha de eixo de uma bomba de alimentação de ureia fundida de uma fábrica de fertilizantes. Foram realizadas inspeção visual, fractografia, metalografia. A falha foi associada à concentração de tensões no raio da chaveta e ranhuras de usinagem, o que causou a fadiga.

Welded deposited chromium carbide overlay’s has been widely used in various branches of welding overlay’s industry related to wear. Characterization techniques are an important tool in the development of chromium carbide overlays resistant to wear, enabling the identification of phases, constituents and defects. In this work one used optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy on chromium carbide overlay’s deposited by submerged arc welding process. The characterization techniques identified precisely the elements of the overlay’s enabling point of the main cause of the observed defects such as cracks, porosity and clusters of particles known in the industry as " rice crispy" .
