The existing methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries present initial hurdles related to the safe handling and preparation of the batteries to avert potential explosions. Submerging batteries in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution has become an acceptable industrial practice. However, the use of NaCl to discharge lithium-ion batteries rusts the batteries’ cases and releases metals which impacts the downstream processes that involve selective recovery of Li. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentrations and pH range of NaCl for the discharge of lithium-ion batteries for the purpose of minimizing the leach of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni.

The domestic cement industry demands about 550 trillion Btu annually, at a time when reduced fuel use has become a necessity due to the energy shortage. In terms of the overall power picture, that 550 trillion Btu, which includes both fossil and electrical energy, means about 0. 870 of all energy consumed in the U. S. The various factors influencing reduction of this energy consumption are the subject of this paper. Nationally, the energy shortage is being tackled on two fronts--increasing supply and reducing demand. Making cement consumes energy; therefore, the industry cannot join the effort to increase the energy supply except indirectly as noted later. Demand can also be attacked on two fronts--by reducing cement consumption or by reducing the amount of energy required to make cement. The following discussions on reducing cement industry energy consumption center briefly on the prospect of reducing cement consumption followed by a broad evaluation of the potentials for improving cement-making thermal efficiency.

X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. (XP) enclosures to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a lithium-ion battery thermal runaway test within a modified MSHA-approved XP enclosure to assess thermal runaway containment. Thermal runaway produced jet flames emanating from the cover joint at several locations and distorted the cover joint and bottom plate of the enclosure beyond allowable limits. The test demonstrates that XP enclosures may not provide adequate explosion protection against lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. This paper suggests some approaches to mitigate the hazard.

Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones. Using the work of Hudy (1968), and Deurbrouck and Hudy (1972), selection functions for individual unit operations in each plant are calculated as a function f particle size as well as density.

Recent advances in computing, rendering and display technologies have generated increased accessibility to virtual reality. Virtual reality allows for the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations and test conditions and to visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a virtual-reality framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine, including mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

With fuel costs unstable but escalating, solid fuels are playing an increasingly larger part in industrial concerns. Coal, petroleum coke and wood are examined from a burner system design viewpoint and from operational experience in kilns, hot gas generators, etc. The burner of today must also handle multi-fuel tasks and allow immediate, painless switching from one fuel to the next as well as the simultaneous burning of two or mope fuels. The paper discusses the principle of burning alternate pulverized fuels as well as the practice both in the United States and around the world.

Most modern crushing and grinding facilities are automated to some degree. Some, of course, have a very minimum of automatic control whereas others utilize very complex control equipment. However, with very few exceptions, the re has not been a new basic control philosophy applied in this field in the past seven years. The philosophy has been broadened in scope and applied to larger plants, some of them with data logging and so- called computer control, but almost always the same tried and proven basic control philosophy is the basis for the control system. New types of control devices to better implement the automatic control have been developed and are continuing to be developed. These devices and their application will be explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Automatic lubrication of plant equipment is most essential, but this paper will not cover these systems. The use of data logging and computer analysis of the data obtained is fairly recent and it is hoped that by careful analysis of this information that new and better basic control philosophy will be forthcoming. This paper will describe the basic philosophy applied in its simplest form to several types of crushing and grinding equipment, and it will describe how it is being expanded to more complex systems. Some of the economics with regard to first cost, return on investment and maintenance will be covered.

This paper is a review of research and development on geothermal energy extraction in Japan especially on hydraulic fracturing. First recent geothermal developments in Japan are outlined in Part I. An increase in the production rate of geothermal wells may be highly dependent on the geothermal well stimulation technology based on hydraulic fracturing. The hydraulic fracturing technique must be developed also for geothermal energy to be extracted from hot, dry rock masses. In Part II, the research on hydraulic fracturing and field application are reviewed.

The trends in the market place, particularly economic and political, suggest that the bulk of the coal will be consumed for generation of electricity. The utilization of coal to produce electricity will require technical solutions to the variable characteristics of coal and ash, development of methods to improve coal quality, and public acceptance of the cost of compliance with environmental standards.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

Regulation of mineral property valuation methodology by governments and others is due to frauds, condemnation and takings, banking industry problems, and litigation. Definitions of "reserves," "resources," and "qualified person" continue to evolve, along with guidelines to the data and disclosure required to support valuations. A less recognized but vital issue relates to the regulatory acceptability of alternatives to the comparable sales method. Comparable sales generally work well for surface real estate, and sometimes for precious metal deposits, but not at all for most industrial mineral properties. Alternative methods, such as net present value, or a geoscience rating system, often provide better valuations. Yet US regulations dictate comparable sales as the preferred method. The task of convincing regulators of the inapplicability of comparable sales to mineral properties, particularly those lacking reserves, may be as important as the valuation itself.

Conveyor belts are a critical component in tunneling projects. This paper reviews current design considerations for conveyor belts. Rubber compounding differences to meet local fire resistance regulations or certain cover characteristics such as higher abrasion resistance or low carbon footprint rubbers for applications are reviewed. Evaluation of fabric belts, steel cable belts and the benefits of each carcass design for a particular use is also examined to help with proper carcass selection to decrease downtime from unexpected failures. Finally, this paper takes a look at some of the differences when working in metric versus imperial units.

In the present study, the use of horse residue as an alternative reducing agent in the roasting of a low-grade goethite ore containing 17.60% Fe was investigated. Additional roasting experiments were carried out with corn starch and without reducing agent for comparison. Each roasted product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic hysteresis (MH) loops analyses. The optimum roasting conditions (roasting temperature [400, 500, and 600 °C], reducing agent/ore ratio [0.04, 0.08, and 0.12], and roasting time [10, 20, and 30 min]) were investigated based on the Taguchi approach. The magnetic susceptibilities of the roasted sample with the addition of reducing agents were higher compared to that of the roasted sample in the absence of reducing agent. Experimental findings indicate that the horse residue can be used as the reducing agent. Finally, an iron ore concentrate assaying a Fe grade of 62.12% with a recovery of 56.93% was prepared using wet magnetic separation at a magnetic intensity of 0.5 T from the ore roasted under the following roasting conditions: roasting temperature of 500 °C, reducing agent/ sample ratio of 0.08, and roasting time of 30 min.

It is a pleasure to appear on this program and discuss a subject which is of particular interest to me. In my regular duties as Safety Director of Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, I am called on by member companies to discuss matters affecting face ventilation. As a member of the Joint Industry Safety Committee, as I will later describe, I have a part in processing requests for the use of auxiliary fans for face ventilation. The use of auxiliary fans in bituminous coal mines for this purpose came into rather wide use in the late. '20's when conveyor mining was introduced. In this application, the equipment consisted of a chain conveyor with a face chain conveyor parallel to the face on which the coal was loaded by hand and, in turn, was discharged onto the room conveyor and thence to a loading point on the entry at the mouth of the room. Another method was to use a shaker conveyor with a duckbill which was maneuvered across the face of the room from which the coal was loaded and transported by the shaker to the loading point. In either case the equipment did not readily lend itself to driving crosscuts or breakthroughs with the result that rooms were driven to depths of 250 or 300 feet without adequate means of ventilating the face area with the main split of air. It was, therefore, necessary to use other means of ventilating this area as the rooms were being driven and during retreat work if pillars were extracted. Auxiliary fans of the blowing type were utilized for this purpose. They were of very small capacity using small diameter tubing. By the time the room was driven half way to its projected limit ventilation was very poor or practically nonexistent. To compound the problem the fan was usually set up at the mouth or neck of the room and in many cases the intake air to the fan was the return air from the room. It is small wonder, therefore, that there is on record 12 cases where auxiliary fans were given as the cause of explosions. In 9 of these occurrences, arcs or sparks from open-type motors or accessory equipment on these fans were given as the primary ignition source. They fell into such ill repute that in a number of cases they were blamed as the ignition source even though smoking was strongly suspected as the primary cause.

The world's biomass with its species-specific ability to concentrate metallic elements must provide one of the dominant concentration and transport systems for such elements. Given that about thirty elements are now considered bio-essential, for all these biomass may control their environmental behavior. Life appears to be present in almost all places where liquid water is present at temperatures near 100°C or below. In the surface environment a very large array of simple minerals are produced in living cells and such processes can lead to economic concentrations. Because of the specific nature of bioconcentration of elements, in all environments where biomaterials accumulate, interesting metal concentrations may occur or the molecular fragments from bio-degradation may allow specific metal transport and concentration. The scale of biological-inorganic interactions on our planetary surface is still inadequately appreciated.

The WMATA Yellow Line is the section of steel segmentally lined tunnels that have experienced leakage and significant corrosion in isolated areas. A three part rehabilitation design has been developed for curtain grouting, structural repairs, and corrosion protection to provide continued performance. As WMATA’s first Construction-Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) project, the design development benefitted from collaboration with the Contractor through the final design development process. Rehabilitation work started in Fall 2022 and will be completed by late Spring 2023. Details of the project, the remediation design, and the process and benefits of the CMAR approach in the design development are presented.

The use of finite element programs for evaluating large grinding mill shells is becoming increasingly popular. However, large scale, detailed analysis can become a burdensome task when one is required to manually prepare the necessary data to be entered into the program, while evaluating the voluminous results is even more devastating. Although available computerized finite element analyses can reduce computation time from years to months or even weeks, additional pre and post processors can reduce the time for data preparation and result evaluation to hours, while simultaneously reducing the probability of human error. Examples of the uses of these processors are presented as well as typical modeling techniques.
