The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) software has been successfully used to simulate various machine/soil interactions and provide insight for industries such as mining and bulk material processing. This paper will investigate typical calibration techniques used in particle models for DEM simulation and physical calibration experiments with soft ground TBM cutting tools to incorporate parameters such as tool drag forces that contribute to required TBM torque. With a well calibrated DEM model, it is expected that TBM simulation results will be more meaningful and provide better insight into TBM performance, power requirements, cutting tool placement, and overall cutter head design.

The progress results of a pilot plant study on the effects of ball top size and other mill operating parameters are reported. Test series on taconite and quartzite crude ores using a 1.7m diameter primary mill in closed circuit with a vibrating screen indicate clear trends on the improvements of mill throughput and power consumption when using larger diameter balls. Possible effects on mill liner and ball consumption as well as future research plans are discussed.

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.

The function of advertising is communication. Viewing the advertisements of mineral suppliers exposes the reader to a broad spectrum of purposes: announcements of new products, availability and supply, departmental services, company image, etc. It is the advertiser's hope that the message being conveyed is the same message being perceived by the viewer. To maximize this probability, the advertiser at least must carefully construct precise copy, identify the target audience and select the appropriate advertising medium. A truly successful and efficient ad, however, also must accurately reflect a product's life cycle, i.e., the rise and fall in demand for a product. Buggy whips and radio tubes are classic examples of items formerly in high demand. Industrial minerals are similarly affected by occurrences of product life cycles.

Land uplift due to mine flooding has become a significant challenge with extensive historical mining activities, particularly in Germany’s Ruhr district. The cessation of coal mining operations has led to a gradual rise in groundwater levels, altering geotechnical and hydrological conditions and causing surface uplift. This study develops a system dynamics (SD) model to investigate the dynamic interactions of influential variables such as groundwater levels, total stress, porosity and permeability with land uplift over time. The model integrates causal loop diagrams (CLD) and stock flow diagrams (SFD) to comprehensively understand the system’s behavior. SFD illustrated that for a 10 percent increase in groundwater level, the land uplift increased by about +6 percent, and a rise of 200 percent in total stress caused an 18 percent increase in effective stress, which decreased the land uplift by about 20 percent. This study highlights the importance of dynamic modeling in informing land-use planning and mitigating the long-term impacts of land uplift after mine closures.

Large-scale groundwater withdrawals are necessary to depressurize a confined aquifer system allowing the dry open-pit mining of the overlying phosphate ore. The extent of the existing and planned groundwater development led to the establishment by the State of North Carolina of Capacity Use Area No. l. Groundwater use in the Capacity Use Area is regulated by a permitting system. A two-dimensional finite-difference ground- water flow model was developed for North Carolina Phosphate Corporation. The aim of the model is to aid the Corporation in matters relating to permitting by serving as a predictive tool. The model can be used to project regional water level impacts resulting from various scenarios of depressurization pumping.

The mining industry is a major consumer of rock anchors in the United States. Due to the high humidity in the underground coal-mining environment, the rock anchors corrode and lose their load bearing capacity, which, in turn, reduces the life expectancy of the ground support. This creates operational difficulties and a number of safety concerns (Li and Linblad, 1999). Research on rock anchor corrosion has not been adequate in the past and the effects of several factors in the mine atmosphere and waters are not clearly understood. One of the probable reasons for this lack of research may be attributed to the time required for gathering meaningful data. Underground water samples from different mines in the Illinois coal basin were collected and the major chemical content was analyzed and used for laboratory testing. The corrosion performance of the different commercial rock anchors was investigated by techniques such as laboratory immersion tests in five different corrosion chambers and potentiodynamic polarization tests in simulated ground waters based on the Illinois coal basin. The tensile strengths were measured for the selected rock anchors taken every three months from the salt spray corrosion chambers maintained at different pH values and temperatures. The corrosion potential, corrosion current and the corresponding corrosion rates of the #5, #6, #6 epoxy-coated and #7 forged-head rebar steels, #6 and #7 threaded-head rebar steels were measured in the pHs of 5 and 8 at room temperature. The open circuit potential (OCP) readings of the different rock anchors were recorded in three selected underground coal mines (A, B & C) in the Illinois coal basin and the data compared with the laboratory electrochemical tests for analyzing the life of the rock anchors installed in the mines with respect to corrosion current measured.

A mixed-integer formulation of the mine scheduling problem is discussed and applied for the purpose of optimizing both the mine production sequencing and the mill blending and processing problems simultaneously. Previous attempts at solving these problems separately, although successful, fail to take into account the interrelationships between these problems. Project structure serves as the outline of this paper, which is directed towards a mining engineering audience. Generalized in its organization, this concept is useful for long, intermediate and short range scheduling. Actual applications are mentioned which show that the concept is also applicable to mining a variety of ores.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in facilities with the ability to ship over 30 million tons of iron ore per year by early 1973. Confidence in such rapid future growth was evidenced by careful planning for the future expansion of those facilities provided for initial operation of the project which first shipped ore on 1 April 1969. Ore sales contracts totaling more than 300 million tons have been negotiated, thus justifying the optimism which led the joint venturers to provide over $200 million in initial investment and a like amount in capital required to finance the continuing expansion program. Members of the Mt. "The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. "Owners constructing new combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems increasingly seek to have project design lives of 100 or more years in response to the growing size, complexity, and cost to construct and operate these systems. However, a codified and universally accepted approach to achieving this goal in the United States does not currently exist since service life prediction is a relatively new technical field. This paper discusses how the 100-year design life requirement was met for the design of tunnels, drop shafts, and diversion structures in the DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP). The authors identify some commonly referenced publications, present the testing framework used by the program manager to characterize the CSOs, review the design criteria used to guide the 100-year design life development, and establish guidelines to be considered by program managers and designers when implementing similar extended design life requirements in other CSO control programs.INTRODUCTIONLike many older cities in the United States, the sewer system in the District of Columbia consists of both combined sewers and separate sanitary sewers. When the capacity of a combined sewer is exceeded during storm events, the excess flow, which is a mixture of sewage and storm water runoff, is discharged to the District’s receiving water bodies (Anacostia River, Potomac River, and Rock Creek) and tributaries through outfall structures. This excess discharge during storm events is called a combined sewer overflow or CSO. A total of 53 CSO outfalls for the combined sewer system are listed in DC Water’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP) will reduce the number of CSO outfalls into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and decrease flooding in DC neighborhoods during extreme rain events by capturing, storing, and conveying diverted CSOs to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant."

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. Power draw of the mill has been accepted as an indicator of the performance of the mill, yet the problem of predicting power under a given set of mill operating conditions still remains to be solved. In the literature, this problem of predicting power is attributed to a lack of knowledge with regard to the motion of the charge. Here a DEM based model is used to analyze the motion of the charge. The resulting information is used to predict the power draw of the mill. A 16-ft diameter mill is simulated. A factorial design study of the variables-mill speed, lifter configuration and ball size distribution-as independent variables is taken up. The power draw as a response variable is analyzed to establish the best operating condition of the mill.

Thirty years ago, the U.S. gold mining industry was hanging on by its fingernails. Save for one great mine, the Homestake, most production was coming from copper smelters such as Kennecott and Magma. Even Homestake itself was under great pressure from rising costs and a fixed price for gold. The outlook was dim, to say the least. Today, as it has for most of the past decade, the American gold mining industry stands among the world leaders in production, and in the development of mining and mineral processing technology. What caused this dramatic change? Obviously, the freeing of the gold price was a major factor, as was the decline in South African production, but these events alone could not have created the U.S. strength we see today. It was technology, investment, and the determination of miners to build an entirely new industry that were the indispensable ingredients. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, with great foresight, had begun the research that led to heap leaching before the gold price began to rise, and Newmont had committed to build a small mill at Carlin, a move then considered quite risky. From that point, the U.S. gold mining industry was placed on lower-grade ores then being found in Nevada and elsewhere, but it was soon apparent that we would have to develop new technologies to deal with more refractory ores, carbonaceous as well as sulfide-bearing. This is now being done with considerable success. Despite its success, or perhaps because of it, the gold mining industry has come under pressure from various groups who characterize their activities as motivated by "public interest." The public interest they refer to properly include the health and safety workers and impacted communities, as well as protection of the environment, and with these concerns we miners have relatively little argument. In fact, we consider health, safety and the environment among our highest priorities, and not just because regulations may require us to do so. The argument, however, is not about the regulation of a viable mining industry, it is about a well-organized movement to attack and condemn mining in the media and to misrepresent its importance to the Nation and its willingness to accept responsible regulation. Once largely local or regional, the interest groups to which I refer are now quite large, national in scope, and even becoming international. This trend, taken together with finances raised from their dues and contributions, would make the interest groups formidable adversaries for mining, but their grip on the media enormously magnifies their influence. Unfortunately, it also makes possible the wide dissemination of incomplete, incorrect or slanted information. I am not here to "bash" the interest groups. On the whole, I believe that many of them have made positive contributions to society. As conservationists, however, I question their authority to make, or foster, decisions about which American industries and communities live and which die. To illustrate, I would like to present for your consideration the problem of cyanide, one of the issues over which the gold mining industry is most threatened. CYANIDE-POISON OR MIRACLE SOLVENT? Let me get this out of the way right up front: cyanide in most of its chemical forms is toxic. In some forms it is also listed as a carcinogen. These are adverse characteristics cyanide shares with a considerable number of industrial chemicals, including some that are widely used without the stringent regulations already in place for the mining uses of cyanide. In these uses, by the way, the risk to humans comes from direct ingestion of cyanide or cyanide-bearing solutions, or from the accidental acidification of solutions leading to release of hydrocyanic acid gas. That these risks are under control in mining can be seen from the fact that, in modern U.S. practice, there has never been a documented fatality attributed to cyanide! Because of its toxicity, cyanide cannot enter and be accumulated in the food chain. It can, however, be a threat to birds and animals that ingest cyanide-bearing solutions. Protection against this is, quite properly, a responsibility of individual mining operations, and considerable sums are spent each year to prevent or reduce bird and animal exposures. It should be evident, though, that many human activities, including highway traffic, windmills, use of pesticides and the like, result in bird and animal losses. Mining's use of cyanide, and the measures taken to protect birds and animals, should be considered in context. Cyanide must be kept out of surface streams and groundwater, and existing regulations mandate this. Any cyanide residues left in leach heaps, waste dumps and disused facilities must be eliminated, and we have proven technologies to do this now, just as we have means to detoxify tailings prior to disposal. The gold mining industry decries those rare instances when irresponsible operators fail to deal with contamination, and agrees that they should be held responsible. We do not agree, however, that the great majority of responsible companies should be punished, in advance, for accidents that have never happened. So much for the poison, what about the "miracle solvent?" Is that an overstatement? Well, consider the fact that gold has been called "noble" from earliest times, because it does not oxidize under atmospheric exposure, and that it appeared to the ancients to be utterly insoluble. Later generations of scientists did discover that it could be dissolved, but only by a combination of acids so potent that it became known as aqua Regia. Later still, it was found that chlorine would also dissolve gold, and attempts were made to base commercial processes on this, without a great deal of success. It remained

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

INTRODUCTION The process of mining removes valuable and eco¬nomically recoverable minerals from the earth. In the case of hard-rock mining, this process involves breaking and removing ore, while leaving the waste rock or host rock as intact as possible. Prior to mining, ground stresses exist in the ore and the host rock as a result of weight and tectonic forces; for the purposes of this chapter, the ore is considered to support the host rock on both the hanging and footwall sides. Two basic phenomena accompany mining. First, the hanging walls and footwalls tend to move together as the ore is removed. Second, high stress gradients de¬velop in the rock periphery of the opening; the magni¬tudes of the stress gradients vary widely, depending upon the local geometry and conditions. At various times, mining methods have used square¬set timbers, waste-rock backfill, alluvial sand fill, and tailings backfill materials, with or without cement, to replace the loss of support caused by the removal of the ore. Cut-and-fill mining has evolved to use hydraulically placed tailings for the backfill. In the stope, this fill provides massive support to the walls, thereby reducing stresses in the back. It also provides a floor from which men and machines can work to drill and blast, to haul ore, and to scale and bolt the back. In many cases, the addition of cement provides a competent free-standing wall when the fill is exposed during mining of adjacent stopes or during pillar recovery operations. In most cases, the use of fill does not eliminate standard tem¬porary or local roof control measures such as roof bolts and wire mesh. Fill Characteristics It is important that backfill used for ground support be of maximum stiffness in relation to wall closure. The stiffness of the fill is related to its placement bulk density or void ratio. In the case of cemented tailings, this is enhanced by the cement bonds. During stope closure, individual fill particles experience rotation and crushing at point contacts, but they are subject to little relative translation. The stiffness approaches infinity as the void ratio approaches zero, until the ground forces reach equilibrium, and closure stops. The gradation of particle sizes and minimal segregation resulting from good hy¬draulic placement both contribute to a high degree of early stiffness in the closure history of classified tailings backfill. This also implies that the fill should be resistant to creeping under high static loads. All mines experience shock loading situations such as blasting, and many mines experience rock bursts that can apply sudden and very high loads to the fill. Certain conditions of void ratio, particle size, and moisture con¬tent can result in mass fluidization of unconsolidated fill during such shock loading. Two key factors in avoid¬ing fluid behavior are the provision of a well-drained fill through desliming or classification and the achievement of a small degree of consolidation through the addition of cement in ratios as lean as 40 to 1 (2.4% cement). The acceptance of classified mill tailings as backfill material has been enhanced by its relative economy, including its source, preparation, delivery, and stope distribution. Transportation from the backfill prepara¬tion plant on the surface into the stope usually can be accomplished with low power consumption, with low labor costs, with few capital costs, and at high tonnage rates. An additional benefit is a reduction of the storage volume required for surface disposal of the tailings stream, with a resultant improvement in the environ¬ment. The costs of placing cemented tailings backfill generally range from $1.65 to $6.61/t ($1.50 to $6.00 per st) of fill depending upon the cement ratio used. Scope This chapter examines a major backfill program at a mine and mill complex where the backfill facilities are included as a part of the original planning. The backfill preparation plant is intended to make maximum use of remote controls and automation. The logistics asso¬ciated with material storage, handling, and metering in the plant are outlined. Important considerations in specifying equipment for typical service conditions are discussed. The fill delivery system is described, includ¬ing the boreholes, level lines, and stope distribution lines. Stope preparations for fill confinement and drain¬age are described, as are the techniques of placement and distribution. Methods of controlling and directing the flow of drainage water and slimes are presented, along with the facilities and equipment for clarification, pumping, and sludge removal. As shown in Fig. 1, the fill program encompasses most aspects of the mining and refining facilities, so the discussion is brief in each area. The preparation of backfill of a uniform and con¬trollable quality is presented here as a material handling problem. The balance of the presentation concentrates on the logic of the system, the costs where meaningful (in 1977 US $ unless otherwise specified), and some operating "tricks" that have contributed to system per¬formance and reliability. SURFACE PREPARATION PLANT A backfill preparation plant is required on the surface. This plant generates suitable fill material from the stream of mill tailings. Among the functions of the plant are: 1) Slimes are removed to improve the percolation characteristics of the fill; typically, particles finer than 325 mesh are removed from the tailings. 2) Tailings and sand storages are provided so that the steady stream of tailings produced by the mill can be accepted. Provision is made to accommodate the cyclic high-volume demand from the mine. 3) The plant stores the cement and contains meter¬ing and mixing facilities to provide fill of a controllable and uniform quality. 4) The hydraulic backfill delivery system is a part
