The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

Kaolin is defined and described as an industrial mineral. In addition the types of deposits -primary and secondary are defined and the genesis of kaolin from feldspars and other minerals discussed. The major deposits of the world found in the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, and Czechoslovakia are described along with many of the minor kaolin deposits. Four areas which have very large deposits of kaolin could, with technological breakthroughs to reduce viscosity significantly, become important factors in supplying the world markets which are increasing year by year.

Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

In a typical mining operation, run-of-mine (ROM) ore is crushed and screened to achieve a desired particle size distribution and then fed to processing equipment for further refining. For an operation to be profit-able, the ore handling system from the mine face to final product loadout must be reliable. However, the handling system components do not always perform as expected and production problems related to material flow occur. These problems include flow stoppages, limited live storage capacities, uncontrollable flow, segregation, spillage and dust emissions. These result in lost production, excessive maintenance, safety and environmental issues, and even structural failures, in some cases. Flow patterns Flow problems and their solutions can be best understood by first learning how bulk solids flow. As bulk solids discharge by gravity from a storage system, primarily two types of flow patterns can develop: funnel flow and mass flow. Figure 1 shows a schematic of these two flow patterns. In funnel flow, only a portion of the material is in motion during discharge, which flows toward the outlet through a channel that forms within the stagnant material. Funnel flow occurs when a hopper is not sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the walls or when the outlet is not fully effective. In mass flow, all of the material is in motion whenever any is discharged ? there is no stagnant material. Mass flow occurs when the hopper is sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the hopper walls. Shallow valleys are not permitted and the outlet must be fully effective. A third type of flow pattern, called expanded flow, can develop when a mass flow hopper (or hoppers) is placed beneath a funnel flow hopper or bin. The mass flow hopper is designed to activate a sufficiently large flow channel in the funnel flow hopper to avoid flow problems due to a rathole. The flow pattern in which a bulk solid discharges from a storage system strongly influences the flow problems that may occur in that facility.

The amenability of carbonate separation from a sedimentary phosphate ore using a bioflotation process was studied. Two types of bacteria were chosen for this study. The experiments were performed using oleic acid as collector. The flotation experiments were carried out using statistical designs for optimizing the main operating parameters. A concentrate containing 0.78% MgO and 30.15% P2O5 with a recovery of 92.31% was obtained from a feed containing about 2.45% MgO and 27% P2O5. These specifications could not be obtained using conventional flotation experiments under similar conditions in the absence of bacteria. Measurements of zeta potential, adsorption of bacteria and collector, as well as froth power, were performed to explain the role of microorganisms in the surface modification of both dolomite and phosphate and in their interaction with the collector.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

The case study of a highland area in the Central Andes of Peru, where many abandoned polymetallic mines are found, is presented. Some of these mines generate metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) or have potentially ARD generating (PAG) tailings/waste rock storage. Effluents are discharged into the first of two lakes in line, which act as reservoirs for irrigating an important valley in the desert coastal region. Drainage fees, their relationship with the deposit and the solid-wastes mineralogy are discussed, as well as variations in water and sediments composition, the benthos, and the aquatic/riparian flora/fauna in these lakes.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a multi-purpose urban public works project with a total cost of $3.7 billion. Currently 51 miles of TARP tunnels are completed and operational and 34 miles are under construction. The excavated TARP tunnels have been constructed in rock utilizing 29 tunnel boring machines, ranging in size from 6.5 to 35.3 feet in diameter.

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

The Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shields designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., are recently more enthusiastically accepted by tunnel boring specialists. This company having built 1,000 tunnel shields utilizes its vast experience to resolve the problem to excavate through big boulders scattered in rather soft alluvial soil. Several types of EPB shields which can cope with large size boulders are described. Such shields are equipped with both drag bits and rolling disc cutters on the cutterheads. Previously removal of boulders has presented safety problems for workers while in the muck chamber, or venturing in front of the shield. This report describes the problem and how the equipment was modified to deal with the problem.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

Throughout the mining industry today, new bearing materials - ZA* high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys - are reducing costs of maintaining and rebuilding a wide range of equipment. As replacements for bronze bearings, installed in original equipment at the plant or during maintenance and repair operations in the field, the zinc alloys frequently provide better or equal performance at lower cost. The ZA Alloys The ZA alloys are a family of three high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys that compete in cost and performance with cast iron aluminum and bronze. The growing number and uses testifies to the versatility of these alloys and is encouraging their consideration in a wider range of applications. The ZA alloys are referred to as ZA-8, ZA-12, and ZA-27, the numbers corresponding approximately to the percentage of aluminum each alloy contains. ZA-8 is a permanent-mold casting alloy and is usually selected for decorative purposes; ZA-12 provides both performance and cosmetic benefits; ZA-27 offers the greatest functional strength. The term high performance ZA alloys distinguishes them and their improved engineering properties from traditional zinc die casting alloys. Maintenance Savings At its mine in Timmins, Ontario, Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. operates over 40 Joy VCR- 150 crawler-mounted air-powered rock drills. Most of the drill components undergo severe stress as the drill batters through the under-ground rock. As the components wear, the drill bits wobble; when the wobble becomes excessive, the drills are rebuilt. In the gear train, which rotates the drill steel, there are three planetary gears with - historically - bronze bushings. Since the planetary gear bushings are wear items, they are routinely replaced during overhaul. The bronze planetary gear bushings (three bushings per assembly) were replaced up to five times annually. With 43 drills in use, bushing consumption approached 600 per year. At the manufacturer's replacement part cost, the 600 bushings and gears would cost more than $20,000 a year. Even though a major saving was achieved by having the bronze bushings manufactured locally, the 600-unit annual usage provided ample incentive to investigate other ways of lengthening drill life and reducing the part costs. One approach was to consider using a bushing material that offered good bearing properties, but was lower in cost. About three years ago, ZA-12 zinc-aluminum casting alloy, costing less than half as much as bronze, was evaluated and selected for testing. One hundred ZA bushings were manufactured and placed in service as the drills came in for rebuilding. At the next rebuild the "drill doctor" (drill maintenance mechanic) noticed that, although the bronze bushings were completely destroyed, on occasion the zinc alloy bushings were not. In addition, he noted that some of the ZA bushings showed less wear than the bronze bushings. Because the bushings were changed routinely during each overhaul, the actual operating life of each bushing was not determinable. Therefore, it was not possible to statistically compare the life of the ZA bushing against the bronze. However, the desired life of the part was from overhaul to overhaul. So the ZA alloy obviously met the objective, giving equal or better life than bronze at a significantly lower price. Based on the favorable results of the testing under actual operating conditions, Kidd Creek maintenance personnel decided to switch permanently to the ZA bushings for rebuilding the VCR-150 rock drills. Original Equipment Application As one of the leading companies marketing the ZA alloys, as well as a zinc -copper-silver mining company, Kidd Creek is interested in developing applications for the alloys by original equipment manufacturers such as joy Manufacturing. Kidd Creek marketing representatives provided joy with information on the Timmins mine tests, along with ZA-12 bushings for evaluation and testing. Based on this information, joy installed ZA bushings in 12 new VCR-150 units and delivered them to customers for use in such areas as granite quarries and copper, lead, zinc, and limestone mines. During the following year, joy engineers closely monitored repair reports to verify the performance of the ZA part. The engineers' findings convinced them of the advantages of ZA-12. As a result, joy now uses ZA-12 bushings in the manufacture of its VCR-150 air tools. Advantages for Casters and Users In the foundry, the new alloys have proved their castability and profit potential in sand and metal permanent-mold processes, as well as the new graphite permanent-mold gravity casting process. The energysaving, pollution-free and ease-of-machining benefits they offer are important to all of these processes. Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.
