Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

This publication presents a tabulation of oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States as well as pertinent statistical data on the number, capacity, kind, and condition of the ovens. Coke is an essential raw material in pig-iron production and the coal-chemical materials produced during the coking process are used to manufacture fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals; dyes, and many other products necessary to the high standard of living in this country. In table 1 the oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1959, are listed. This shows the name and address of the company, location of the plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and the coal-chemical materials produced. The "furnace" plants I are those owned by iron and steel companies and most of them are integrated with blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. Furnace plants represented 87 percent of the total coking capacity and their average annual capacity was 1. 3 million tons. The "merchant" plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These coke plants are smaller than furnace plants and in 1959 their average coke capacity was only 520 thousand tons annually. On December 3l, 1959, there were 54 furnace and 20 merchant oven-coke plants in existence in the United States.

The tests described herein were made in the course of a series of experiments on coal-mine ventilation factors which the Bureau of Mines has beep; conducting for the past two years at its experimental mine near Bruceton, Pa. The object of the present tests was to determine the leakage of two air locks which had been placed in the experimental mine as hart of the equipment for tests on friction factors. Position of the Doors. The first or inner lock gas across the aircourse between No. 1 and No. 2 left butt entries, and forced the air through these butts. An air-measuring suction in No. 1 butt determined tae volume passing at tent point.

"The Hog Creek mine, in lot 92 of the 17th district in Towns County, Georgia, was examined in 1890 by F. P. King, who reported the existence there of a 4-foot vein of corundum. The mine is about 2 miles west of Hiawassee, on the southern side of Ramey Mountain. Ed Burch, of Hog Creek, holds the surface rights, and the mineral rights appear to be vested in the heirs of William R. McConnell, who formerly owned and prospected the property.Examination by the Bureau of Mines showed the workings to be caved, but it was thought advisable to open the mine and uncover the reported vein. The Bureau's work consisted, of trenching and cleaning out the pits and shaft.William R. McConnell, the former owner, prospected the property in about 1890. At some tine during that operation, the prospect was visited by Francis P. Kings a geologist with the Georgia Geological Survey.3/King reported that a 4-foot vein of corundum was exposed g feet below the surface in the main cut and was opened for 20 feet along the strike. He also reported that the so-called ""Georgia rubies"" were taken from this mine.The main mine is about 2,000 feet- north of Hoc Creek on a timbered southern slope of Ramey Mountain. It lies at an altitude of about 2,100 feet, approximately 100 feet above the high-water level of the Catuga reservoir, which floods Hog Creek to a quarter of a mile above its confluence with the Hiawassee River. The nearest water is a small branch about 1,000 feet to the west.Chlorite schist is the principal host rock. It has been intruded by irregular masses of a very herd periodtite rock possibly troctolite. The schist near the surface is extremely weathered, presenting white and red laminations parallel to the schistosity. At a depth of 40 feet in the cross-cut it appears as a fine-grained green-chlorite schist. The schist strikes about N. 350 E. and dips 800 to the southeast.No corundum vein was found, and if any existed it must have been mined out after King's visit. In the pit, about 15 feet west of the shaft, approximately 150 pounds of zoisite and an occasiona1 small crystal of corundum were found imbedded in schist about 18 feet below the surface, near hard, dense troctolite."

A new nonclogging water spray system for continuous-mining machines has been developed under contract with the Bureau of Mines. This paper presents installation and operating guidelines for the system, which consists of improved and easily maintained machine-mounted hardware, including an inline Y-strainer, a hydrocyclone, a backup filter, and two quick-opening valves for flushing particulates from the strainer and hydrocyclone. Underground tests with continuous-mining machines have shown that when properly installed and maintained, the new sys tern virtually eliminates nozzle clogging and thus greatly reduces spray maintenance. The sys tern is relatively inexpensive and has been installed on typical continuous-mining machines for a total cost under $1,000.

This Bureau of Mines survey of methane emissions indicates that total daily emissions have declined from 227 MM ft3 in 1971 to 214.7 MM ft3 in 1973. The highest average daily emissions in million cubic feet per day observed in U.S. bituminous coal mines were, in decreasing order, Monongalia County, W. Va. , 40.7 ; Marion County, W. Va. , 23.1 ; Buchanan County, Va. , 22.1; Washington County, Pa., 12.4; Greene County, Pa., 11.7; McDowell County, W. Va. , 11.4; Cambria County, Pa., 9.8; Jefferson County, Ala. , 9.5; Wyoming County, W. Va., 6.0; Marshall County, W. Va., 4.8; and Indiana County, Pa., 4.8.

The degree of reduction of various silica-graphite mixtures was studied in a batch reactor to determine optimum physical conditions for maximizing the carbothermic reduction of silica. The extent of interaction was determined for reactant mixtures in loose powder and briquet forms at pressures less than 0.01 torr and temperatures up to 1,445° C. Molar ratios were varied from 0.05 to 6.5 with maximum reaction at a ratio of about 1.5. The solid-solid reaction did not appear to involve gaseous intermediates. The extent of reaction better correlated with the number of interparticle contacts than with the true surface area of the reactants. Carbonized dextrose was a better reductant than graphite.

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. The law of June 5, 1911, suplements and amends the Laws of April 21, 1810 (the basic law) and May 2, 1837. The Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, coordinates the provisions of the Law of June 5, 1911, with those of the Laws of April 21, 1810, of May 2, 1837, and of July 8, 1865, that have remained in force, as well as with certain articles of the Law of September 1, 1913, which revisad the system of taxation. The revised code has been brought together in one volume.3 All citations in this abstract refer to the coordinating Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, unless it is otherwise specifically indicated.

The characteristics of leaders under the duress of an emergency are important in the development of emergency planning, training, and in the management of an actual emergency. Knowledge of human behavior is an important component in the formation of emergency strategies. The U.S. Bureau of Mines analyzed the leadership behavior in three underground mine fire escapes. The subjects described their escapes during open-ended interviews. Data were coded according to: (1) evidence of leadership behavior, (2) evidence of lack of leadership behavior, and (3) characteristics of the individual in each group who led the subjects out of the mines. This paper discusses the profile of six individual leadership characteristics which emerged from the data.

The Bureau of Mines sponsored an investigation of the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of selected ingredients employed in the formulation and manufacture of conveyor belts. This work was done to supplement similar studies of samples from finished conveyor belts and thus provide basic data for correlation of the potential toxic behavior of a finished belt with that of the individual ingredients. This report covers the study of (1) basic polymers (styrene-butadiene, neoprene), (2) reinforcing fibers (Nylon 6,6, Dacron, viscose rayon), (3) flame-retardant plasticizers (tritolyl phosphate-isomeric mixture, tri-p-tolyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, tris (dichloropropyl) phosphate), (4) plasticizers (diphenylphtha1ate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate), and (5) a vulcanization accelerator (2-mercaptobenzothiazole).

This is the final report on Project CR-102 under the auspices of the Department of Environmental Resources, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania .1 The project was activated on January 5, 1970, with financial support from Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the Pennsylvania Coal Research Board, and the Water Quality Office of the Environmental Protection Agency (WQO-EPA)2 through Grant 14010 EST to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Work on the project was conducted according to the procedures outlined in BCR Research Program Proposal RPP-164R, dated April 24, 1969, and a subsequent Revulsion of Scope, dated February 25, 1970. This report covers the entire project period from January 5, 1970, through March 25, 1971.

A.5 Conclusions and Recommendations The illustrative simulations in the previous section have demonstrated 1. Flexibility of the program to simulate a wide variety of configurations and cases. 2. Ability of the program to predict evacuation time within a small margin of error (5 percent -.n a case considered). 3. Usefulness of the program in making some of the evacuation decisions. The above leads to a conclusion that the computer program can provide a useful tool in evaluating mine evacuation in the event of a fire. "One of the main functions of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as authorized by Congress, is to investigate safety and health conditions, to disseminate information regarding safe and unsafe practices in mining, and to aid in improving safety and health conditions of mining communities and in promoting the welfare of the miner. Among several methods of reaching the miner and interesting him in safety work, perhaps the most effective is through the 11 mine safety stations and 11 railroad cars known as mine rescue, or more correctly, mine safety cars.Frequently, the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information regarding the purpose, equipment, personnel, and construction of its safety cars used in the field service. It is the intention of this circular to present to the mining public in particular, and to the public in general, some definite information regarding these safety cars and their functions.The cars are operated throughout the mining fields of the United States and are headquartered as follows (see fig. 1): Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. M.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa; Car 11, Anchorage, Alaska.One of the most important purposes of the U. S. Bureau of Mines safety cars is to render service at mine fires and explosions where human life is endangered. State mine inspectors and other interested persons are supplied with itineraries of the car operating in their districts from time to time, so that they may know at all times where the car can be found in case of emergency. When these disasters occur the car may be reached direct or through its field headquarters, and upon receiving word of a mine disaster, or request for assistance, it immediately proceeds to the scene of trouble. Frequently a special locomotive is supplied by the railroads and in many instances the movement of the car is given the right of way over all other railway traffic. Upon reaching the destination, the facilities and personnel of the car are immediately available for rescue and recovery operations.Following most mine disasters a thorough investigation is made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and a confidential report is submitted to the operator. The information gained in this manner from a large number of mine fires and explosions, together with the knowledge gained from the experimental work carried on at the Experimental mine of the bureau at Bruceton, Pa., serves as a basis upon which the bureau is able to recommend preventive measures whereby similar occurrences may be averted. The bureau car is often used as headquarters for the investigating engineer when such an examination is being made."

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

The fire end explosion hazard of excessive coal-dust deposits in mines has been recognized for many years, and important measures have been developed for reducing dust formation and to alley loose dust near its source. Nevertheless, in the course of normal mining it has been estimated that 1 to 3 percent (in some thin, friable seams up to 10 percent) of the total coal mined is reduced to dust of through-20-mesh fineness. In highly mechanized, continuous mining operations the production of fines is even greater. Most dust is trapped near its point of origin and removed from the mine, but large quantities are transported by the air current and by haulage into entries, where the greatest proportion settles on the floor and the balance on the rib and roof surfaces. The latter is generally finer in particle size than the floor dust; this, coupled with its more advantageous position for dispersion, makes the rib-roof dust (also to be referred to as overhead dust) a greater potential explosion hazard.

This report describes preliminary experiments by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the practicability of adding raw pellets of taconite concentrate to blast furnace feeds. The usual industrial practice is to harden the pellets by heating before they are charged to the furnace. The Bureau research demonstrated that raw pellets could be successfully smelted in an experimental furnace with no significant change in coke consumption and only a moderate increase in dust losses. The dust loss was 43 pounds per ton of metal for an all-pellet charge, compared with 7 pounds per ton for an all-sinter charge. Raw taconite pellets undergo only slight degradation during charging to the furnace if 1 percent bentonite is used as a binder. INTRODUCTION Fines and concentrates must be consolidated or agglomerated into larger masses before they can be smelted in a commercial blast furnace. Such agglomeration is usually done by sintering, pelletizing, nodulizing, or briquetting. Sintering has been the more common practice, but with the advent of taconite concentrates pelletizing is increasing in importance.
