Dear All, I am looking for information about vibrations and effects on fish in pools. A tunnel blast is planned to be carried out as close as 300 meters to a freshwater fish growing plant. What is the vibration criteria for fishes in pools? Your comments will be highly appreciated.

This paper examines the effect of prill size consistency, internal particle density, and oil absorbency on Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO)-emulsion blends. By analyzing these physical properties of prill and the nature of the blending process, a mathematical model has been developed to theoretically predict blend densities. Calculated densities can now be compared to actual field densities to give an operator a basis for comparing various manufacturers' emulsions and Ammonium Nitrate (AN) during bid solicitation. The lowest priced emulsion and/or AN may not be the most economical, due to the impact of specific physical characteristics. These factors dictate the blending mechanics and resulting density yields for various mixes. The research was driven from observed 'field' mixing relationships and data. Ultimately, such a model can be an effective tool in evaluating blends from a cost and performance basis.

A real-time system for prediction of the effect of meteorological conditions on airblast overpressure levels has been established in the Hunter Valley Coalfield in Australia. Real-time meteorological data from continuously operating sounding equipment and a predictive meteorological model is input to an atmospheric refraction model that enables the effect of meteorology on airblast overpressure levels in the area surrounding the blast site to be evaluated. Graphical outputs from the model, which are superimposed over a scaled airphoto of the mine and surrounding area, show the extent that airblast levels will be increased. When combined with inputs that quantify the effect of blasting specifications, the airblast levels that will result in the surrounding area from the combined effect of blasting specifications is determined. The model permits those responsible for blasting to make more accurate decisions on suitable times that blasting may take place to conform with applicable airblast limits.

The Empire Mine initiated production in 1963. Since then the unit operations of drilling and blasting have evolved continually in order to meet the increased mining requirements demanded by plant expansions in 1968, 1973 and 1980. Additionally, advance mine planning has become an integral part of proper pit development and is necessary to insure uniform blending of the distinct ore horizons contained within the mine area. Blasting practices have been modified to facilitate the autogenous grinding system utilized at Empire and pioneered in the Iron Ore Industry. Technical innovations in the explosives industry, as well as, progress regarding on site blast engineering methods have substantially increased the use of ammonium nitrate explosives and helped to establish efficient charging procedures. In addition, the recent introduction and use of ammonium nitrate fueled with nitropropane and methanol indicates that it is a viable substitute for aluminized ANFO.

Geologic structures are one of the crucial parameters in blast design. Structural geology and rock properties influence drilling patterns, blast layout, and initiation systems. A comprehensive understanding of structural characteristics is essential to achieve the desired blasting objectives. This paper aims to identify geologic features in a bench using images obtained from the drone. Images obtained from mine site are annotated for geological features such as faults and joints. Semantic segmentation of images is achieved using an encoder and decoder structure available in the machine-learning pipeline. The encoder consists of initial convolution and pooling layers to capture essential features of the geology and rock patterns from two-dimensional RGB images. Batch normalization is used to put all the features on the same scale. These images are then inputted as training data for the machine-learning algorithm. Machine learning model is trained on sub-section of interest to achieve reasonable accuracy. Initially, 1000 best annotations were used to train the model and additional samples were added later to achieve more accuracy and avoid iteration of machine learning model in wrong convergence. After the model achieves reasonable accuracy, it is used to recognize geological features on new data. Geological features identified on the new data can be used by the blasting crew in blast design and keeps the geological maps updated that can help the geotechnical team.

The application of new technologies, methodologies, and the use of new products in mining operations is a practice that is becoming more common in the industry every day, added to the new challenges and restrictions found in the operation. In the city of Tierra Amarilla, the interaction between mining operations and the community presents a constant challenge given the proximity to the community and the limitations that this presents. Explosive charge mass, in conventional blasting using traditional explosives (ANFOs, packaged explosives for example) limits the explosive charge lengths (they are reduced), impacting the explosive charge productivity. To improve the productivity of explosive charge and fragmentation, the use of low-density explosives was proposed, allowing the increase of the explosive charge length, trying to maintain the vibration levels within the established limits (2mm/s), preserving the fragmentation of the rock in the required sizes. The present study shows the results obtained from the application of low-density bulk emulsion for production blasting charges using upward and downward fan drillings. During this process, 18 blasting events were carried out, of which 8 were Up-hole loading (average density of 0.75 gr/cc) and 10 with Down-Hole loading (average density of 0.95 gr/cc). In summary, a total of 110,760 tons of ore have been broken, using low density emulsion, meeting the proposed objectives such as: 33% reduction of vibrations, 12% overbreak (within the theoretical design), P80 of 11in and 4.6% in fines.

Detonating cord is a staple of the explosives industry, used widely in the civil and defense industries. Detonating cord is a thin, flexible plastic tube filled with pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). It has many applications in mining, construction and military disciplines. For civil applications, it is used to connect and initiate a series of blastholes in a desired pattern. In the defense sector, it can be used as a detonating agent, a priming agent or alone as an explosive charge. Research has been done to understand the initiation and detonation physics on the detonating cord. However, its sympathetic detonation characteristics needed to be further analyzed.

The paper presents the vibration and sound emission measurement campaigns carried out in 2007 in preparation for the Ceneri-Basistunnel construction. We also present the vibration measurement campaign conducted during the construction of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel. Both tunnels form an integral part of the Swiss Federal Railway Company Neue Eisenbahn Alpentransversale project (NEAT). This strategic project comprised the construction of several new tunnels. Its aim is the improvement of the existing infrastructure. The improved infrastructure will be able to accommodate a larger volume of railway traffic that is also crossing the Alps at higher speeds. The construction of the Ceneri-Basistunnel commenced in 2006. Both the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel and the Ceneri- Basistunnel are located underneath densely populated areas. Therefore, noise and vibration emissions have to be kept to a minimum and must not exceed applicable codes of practice. In order to identify the most appropriate blasting strategy for the yet to be constructed Ceneri-Basistunnel, blasting trials were conducted. The paper presents the findings of these trials and identifies ways to reduce both noise and vibration emissions from blasting. The construction of the first phase of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel took place between 1999 and 2003. While the first phase is already in operation, the construction of the second phase has been postponed (commencement originally due in 2007). The Zimmerberg-Basistunnel connects the outskirts of Zürich with the city centre. As the tunnel site was not located close to the surface near populated grounds, no special measures were needed to reduce the noise emissions from blasting. However during the construction of the tunnel, the vibration emissions from blasting were monitored on more than 50 locations on the surface. The paper presents the analysis of some of the data. An emphasis is placed on the appropriate synopsis and presentation of data for documentation purposes.

Blasting was conducted for the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in the Columbia River near Saint Helens, Oregon during 2009 and 2010 to deepen the navigation channel as a final phase of a dredging project to accommodate larger container ships. The Columbia River Channel Improvement Project (CRCI) required 4 months to blast and dredge 300,000 yd3 (229,366 m3) of basalt from the bottom of the channel to allow Post-Panamax vessels with drafts up to 50 ft (15.2 m) access to the Ports along the River. Explosives charges were limited to 90 lbs (40.8 kg) per delay for the protection of fish and marine life in the area. A fish mortality study and marine mammal monitoring program was also required by the Corps. Underwater overpressure monitoring was required for each blast and peak overpressures measured 10 ft (3.1 m) above the river bottom 140 ft (42.7 m) from the closest blast hole were not to exceed 70 psi (483 kPa) with a cautionary level of 40 psi (276 kPa). Specifications required sampling rates of 500k S/s and PCB Peizotronics tourmaline pressure sensors. The Corps granted permission to co-locate additional ceramic-type sensors at different sampling rates to design redundant monitoring systems 140 and 300 ft (42.7 and 91.4 m) from blasting and develop a site-specific overpressure attenuation model for the project. This paper presents the correlations of overpressure with cube-root scaled distance factors, a comparison of measurements using three different pressure sensor systems, and a discussion of blast design influence on overpressure measurements.

In the exploitation of low grade mineral deposits, blasting engineers are vitally concerned with maximizing the efficiency of explosive fracturing of rock while simultaneously limiting deleterious environmental affects to acceptable levels. Efficiency can be inferred from radiating seismic waves. Likewise, seismic waves carry direct information on damage potential. The usual approach to this problem is to measure the maximum signal level close to a blast, where it is difficult to instrument and where the signal complexity is intensified by mixtures of wave types and by local heterogeneities. Near-field sites are usually more easily monitored and more readily interpreted. Therefore, a study is being conducted to determine if variations in multi-hole, delayed blasts produce measurable changes in the spectra of seismic waves recorded in the near-field and if these spectra can be correlated with close-in strong motions and affects. To date, power spectra for the well-developed phase Lg and its early coda have been computed and are found to vary measurably when nominal changes occur in blast conditions. Up to a distance of about 50 km the spectra of Lg and its coda appear to be dominated by body wave characteristics (thus source-controlled), whereas beyond 50 km path affects seem to dominate. Additional data must be collected to fully explore the consistency of near-field Lg observations and to verify their usefulness as diagnostics of the engineering affects of blasting.

This study was intended to simulate the blasting model using notched-hole with numerical approach. Numerical analysis approach was applied to compare and evaluate the blasting model using notched-hole and circular hole. To implement non-linear dynamic blasting model, blasting analysis was carried out with AUTODYN code. Behavior of two models was compared and evaluated using AUTODYN and visual analysis and quantitative evaluation based on pressure and stress to verify the effect to induce the destruction territory to the specific direction when blasting with notched hole was attempted.

This paper describes a magazine security system using two readily available cellular telephone-based technologies. The system is comprised of vibration sensors and remote cameras. The system is used at a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) licensed explosives storage location in Pennsylvania to comply with PA Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) regulations. The system provides instant notification to the licensee via cellular modems, text messaging, phone call, and e-mail. Likewise, the licensee can control the system remotely over the internet and using text messaging commands. The vibration sensors attach to the door of the metal type I magazines magnetically and detect any movement or vibration. The cameras trigger on movement and thermal radiation changes and can also be triggered manually to check alarms received from the vibration sensors. The previous system was comprised of a base unit and magnetic strips. The magnetic strips were powered by a hard line from the control unit and mounted on the doors and top of magazine creating a bond, that when broken triggered an alarm. Our main issues with the unit were the delay in alert times and tech support. Because of these issues, we decided an upgrade was necessary. Compared to that previous system used at this site, these new systems are highly affordable, carefree and reliable.

Today, as adverse market conditions continue to influence the surface coal industry, it has become necessary that all functions of the surface mining process become as efficient as possible. High production with reduced manpower is the winning combination of staying competitive in the market place. We at AMAX Coal are committed to staying in the coal business, but we have always been committed to providing a safe work environment for our people and will continue to do so in the future. Approximately two years ago, our Midwest mines installed state of the art lightning detection and warning systems at our mines. This paper will cover its application at Delta Mine; the benefits and problems encountered, and the impact this system has had on Delta Mine.

The large iron deposits in the northern region of Brazil located in the Amazon Craton have in common the presence of natural cavities. These cavities primarily occur in the upper layer of the ore body, formed above hematite mineralization. Their origin remains a topic of debate, often associated with hydrothermal drainage processes and erosive evolution. Over time, these cavities have become integral to the local environment, each contributing to the regional ecosystem of fauna, flora, and the significance of speleothems found within them. Managing these cavities poses a significant challenge for iron mines in the area. On one hand, they must preserve the cavities from anthropogenic actions, while simultaneously handling heavy equipment and large volumes. In 2023, the development of the mine took place towards the cavity under study, revealing systematic deviations in vibrations recorded during nearby detonations as the blasting got nearer. To address this, a work plan was put in place, emphasizing a straightforward approach: constructing lithology-specific vibration models, defining charge abacuses, and optimizing timing to reduce charge amplification. Implementing this methodology significantly improved adherence to the vibration limit, resulting in an around 50% reduction in standard error. This paper presents the consolidated work that allowed mining activities to continue in the area through controlled blasting, effectively mitigating potential anthropogenic damage in sensitive areas.

In the design of explosively driven penetration devices, understanding the impact conditions between the explosively propelled penetrator and the target is one of the most important steps in optimizing the performance of the device. These impact conditions are especially prevalent when a shaped charge jet impacts concrete, which is not an ideal target material. The specific impact conditions, including but not limited to the impact angle and jet properties, create a great deal of variability that affects the performance and penetration of the shaped charge. The large amount of impurities and voids in concrete, along with its heterogeneous nature and the general strength characteristics, make concrete a non-ideal material for shaped charge jet penetration. These material characteristics lead to a highly non-linear deformation behavior of the concrete target during a hyper-velocity impact.

The emission of particulate material is one of the several parameters related to environmental control in mining operations near communities. Blasting is an event that generates and leaves a large amount of dust in suspension, which can cause discomfort to communities, generating complaints that can compromise the operational continuity of the mine. The proper management of these environmental impacts is a key factor to ensure a good relationship with the neighborhoods, making a responsible mining in harmony with the environment, giving sustainability to the mining business in the medium and long term. The main goal of this work is to present different techniques and technologies applied in a large-scale open pit mine in Brazil, with operations close to a community, to minimize the emissions of particulate material into the atmosphere. For this, different technical solutions were implemented. First, a non-conventional blasting technique was introduced that incorporates special charging and timing configurations, generating a first upper layer that serves as a blanket to contain a second, higher-energy lower layer. An optimal stemming was also defined in order to minimize ejections and maximize cratering, using the scaled depth of burial theory as well as video and fragmentation analysis. In addition, changes were made in the timing between decks (to guarantee a minimum time between layers) and between holes (changing the initiation point opposite to the free face). Finally, additional measures such as humidification of the bench, use of a wind vane to identify wind direction and the construction of a physical barrier between the mine and the community were implemented as additional mitigation measures. By applying the above techniques together, in some specific zones of the mine, it was possible to considerably reduce the ejections generated by blasting versus conventional blasting without the above measures, which was demonstrated in the field with dual blasts trials. Additionally, it was possible to achieve a vibration reduction in the community of ~30%. This work demonstrates how, by applying these technical solutions, it was possible to minimize the dust and vibrations generated by blasting allowing this operation to do sustainable mining

This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Special projects required special equipment as this project was safely and quickly installed.

During my nearly 30 years with ATF, (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives), I conducted hundreds of inspections. In many cases hours of time were wasted because the licensee or permittee, who had basically done everything right, was not prepared for the audit. In these cases, required documents were scattered, personnel were unprepared and no plan was in place. This paper will provide some simple steps to avoid these embarrassing delays. A list of common violations is also provided.
