"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. The Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) Navachab single stage SAG mill has provided an excellent setting for incremental optimization. Over the past decades, several interventions have resulted in marked improvements in specific performance; including steel ball scat removal, re-design of the mill lifters, replacement the pebble crusher and cyclone cluster, as well as the use of a vibrating screen in place of a discharge trommel. Recent initiatives now include an operating fine DMS circuit, studies on pre-crushing of the ROM feed and also fine-screening as an alternative to hydrocyclone classification. The current optimized state of the Navachab mill allows it to operate at approximately 20% higher efficiency when compared to mills of similar shell dimensions in gold mining, treating similar ore. This paper describes the systematic improvement of the SAG circuit to its current state.

Sulfate-reducing passive bioreactors efficiently treat acid mine drainage (AMD) by increasing its pH and alkalinity and by removing metals as sulfide precipitates, in addition to hydroxides and carbonates. However, the new mining legislation sets discharge limits based on physicochemical parameters and on the non-toxicity of treated effluent as well. In this study, toxicity was assessed for effluent from 3.5 L column bioreactors filled with mixtures of natural organic carbon sources and operated at two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 7.3 d and 10 d for the treatment of a highly contaminated AMD. Acute toxicity was observed for D. magna, and a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure was performed to identify potential toxicants. To help the interpretation of the toxicity results, metal partition in the effluent was also determined by filtration and ultrafiltration, while geochemical modeling was performed for metal speciation evaluation. The 10 d HRT effluent was nonacutely lethal for rainbow trout but acutely lethal for D. magna, whereas the 7.3 d HRT effluent was toxic for both organisms. The toxicity to D. magna was eliminated by 2 h of aeration for the 10 d HRT effluent, and the TIE procedure suggested iron as a cause of toxicity. However, the 2 h aeration eliminated the toxicity of the 7.3 d HRT effluent, only if performed after the pH rising to 9.3. Data regarding metal speciation indicated instability of both effluents during aeration and were consistent with the toxicity being caused by iron. The study indicates that design of passive treatment should include sufficient HRT and posttreatment aeration to meet acute toxicity requirements. In SAG mills fed with a variety of ore types, hard packing between the shell lifters can come and go depending on rock type and rock size distribution and the presence of a binder. Packing can appear in all sizes of SAG mills, and can be tenacious. High ball impact forces (depending on ball size) in larger mills may compact and encourage packing. Packing can have a negative impact on milling performance and a change in shell liner design may be required to remove it. However shell liner design changes need to be managed with care to ensure liner reliability. In smaller mills control of packing can extend shell plate wear-life and may help to maintain milling performance in fixed-speed mills through the liner wear-cycle.

The speciation of Uranium in silica-rich depositional layers in the proximity to uranium ore deposits was investigated using micro X-ray fluorescence (VESPERS beamline), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Laser-Ablation ICP-MS, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman Spectroscopy. The heterogeneous Si-rich laminations contain micrometer-size inclusions of secondary uranyl-minerals. The U concentration in these layers range from several ppm to lower weight percent and the U 4f spectra indicate variable U6+ : U4+ ratios. Correlation between the concentrations of U and other metals (M) suggests the presence of M-U-bearing nanoparticles or species within the amorphous silica matrix.

This paper details results from laboratory simulation of an innovative underground bioleaching process. The underground reactors are periodic flushed with recycled leachate to remove uranium that accumulates within the reactor water. This leaching cycle has been recreated within the laboratory. This study examines the influence of varying cycle protocol on uranium leaching. Protocol variants examined include variation of flushing frequency, flush volume, leachate recycle, nutrient solution (NPK) addition to reactors and Fe(III) sulphate addition to reactors. The presented data highlight the dramatic improvements in uranium recovery that might be achievable by varying the operating protocol for the actual underground reactors.

TiN coating has a wide range of tribological applications from wear reduction of cutting tools to erosion protection of gas turbine engine compressor components. The performance of TiN coating depends on its microstructure, mechanical properties and adhesion strength which are influenced by the coating deposition process. In this study the effects of cathodic arc deposition conditions on the microstructure, hardness, adhesion and erosion resistance of TiN coating were investigated experimentally. It was found that varying deposition temperature, substrate bias and N2 pressure could derive a processing window in which TiN coating with superior erosion performance can be fabricated.

Cold gas dynamic spray (CGDS) has been considered a potential technique to produce the metallic bond coat for TBC applications, because of its fast deposition rate and low deposition temperature. This paper presents the influence of spray processes for bond coat, including air plasma spray, high velocity oxy-fuel, and in particular CGDS, on the oxidation performance of TBCs with a Co-32Ni-21Cr- 8Al-0.5Y (wt.%) bond coat. Oxidation behaviour of the TBCs was evaluated by examining the coating microstructural evolution, TGO growth behaviour, and crack propagation during thermal exposure at 1050°C. The relationship between the TGO growth and crack propagation will be discussed.

This poster presents results obtained from an experimental test set-up called CUAPS (curing under applied pressure system) allowing to assess the performance and quality of cemented paste backfill (CPB) materials. CUAPS can be used for carrying out a series of tests: one-dimensional consolidation, saturated hydraulic conductivity, pore-water pressure dissipation, and curing under uniaxial stress. The poster presents CUAPS testing preliminary results including uniaxial compression tests (UCS) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). It was demonstrated that CUAPS-consolidated CPB materials cured under time-dependent stresses provide higher UCS values than standard mould (undrained and unconsolidated) CPB samples. This may be explained by the release of excess pore water within backfill that gives rise to a significant reduction in the total porosity of fresh CPB materials prior to hardening and thus, to higher mechanical strength (UCS) gain. The results obtained from MIP highlighted a good correlation between CUAPSconsolidated and mould-unconsolidated CPB samples. MIP results were also related to UCS values in order to predict the final CPB mechanical strength.

Inconel 600 pipes welded to Carbon-Steel are used in CANDU nuclear reactors. Fracture of these welded tubes would have important consequences in term of safety, and therefore their mechanical properties need to be better understood. In this study, the weld region was analyzed at various length-scales using optical microscopy, micro hardness testing, small and large scale tensile testing and digital image correlation (DIC). Large grains were observed in the weld region and smaller grains in the Inconel and carbon steel base metals. Micro-hardness profiles showed variations across the weld and through thickness and were justified in terms of residual stresses in the sample. Large tensile samples were extracted from the welded pipe and were used to identify the material in which fracture initiates. In addition, the local strains in each material were obtained using digital image correlation. Local stress-strain curves were built from the DIC data and compared to stress-strain curves obtained from miniature tensile samples extracted from the carbon steel, Inconel and weld regions. The results demonstrate the advantage of using DIC for extracting local material properties in dissimilar weld systems. Variations in the materials stress-strain curves thought thickness are also presented and emphasize the need for obtaining a complete map of the mechanical properties in the weld region for predictive models to be accurate. Preliminary fracture studies will also be presented.

Introduction Pneumatic jackleg rock drills are commonly used in underground mining operations. These tools are known to expose their operators to hand-arm vibration levels in the order of 20-35 m/s2 weighted (Wh). Thus, the majority of the workers who have cumulated several years of jackleg rock drill operation are affected by related health problems such as Raynaud's syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome. Up to now, no efficient personal safety device was available to protect pneumatic rock drill operators against hand-arm vibration (HAV). To address this problem, an anti-vibration handle prototype for jackleg drills has been developed in a previous study. Then, a multi-partner project was launched to refine the prototype and commercialize an effective anti-vibration handle for pneumatic rock drills.

Mineralogical controls exert significant control over the extraction of uranium from its ores. Uranium speciation, associated mineralogy, deportment and uranium mineral availability are all factors of consideration when assessing leachibility. This study presents data from laboratory uranium extractions undertaken on several contrasting uranium ores from a wide range of orebodies. The results provide insight into the mineralogical factors of importance when considering uranium extraction. These results are presented within the wider context of geometallurgy and demonstrate how geometallurgical assessment, even at an early stage of mine development, can greatly assist in the design of a suitable extraction scheme.

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ‘Mine to mill’ strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.
