"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However, high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives. IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million. Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R. The milling of asbestos ore has been done primarily by a series of steps involving crushing, dry-grinding and aspiration using large quantities of air to release the fibres. Contrast this process to those practiced in the purification of virtually every other mineral. Ores other than asbestos are crushed and milled using an aqueous slurry in rod, ball or pebble mills. The finely ground mineral, still as a slurry, undergoes beneficiation by froth flotation, heavy media separation, hydrocyclones or any of the other aqueous techniques currently employed in mineral processing.One of the driving forces behind the use of air instead of water as a means of separating asbestos is the nature of the aqueous asbestos slurry. While most slurries of minerals contain as much as 80070 solids and can still be pumped and transported, asbestos slurries become highly viscous with as little as 10070 solids. These high viscosities reduce the pumpability of the slurry and create severe handling problems. Mills become prohibitively large and uneconomical due to having to handle slurries containing only 10% rock and 90% water.Health-related issues have affected the use of asbestos in many countries. In Canada, the asbestos-producing provinces have introduced stricter occupational legislation to improve safety in the workplace. This primarily means strict control minimizing release of air-borne asbestos fibres . Quebec and Ontario have set limitations of airborne asbestos at 2 (2) and 1(3) fibre per cubic centimetre of air. With present milling technology, maintaining these low levels in the workplace requires constant vigilance."

"Review of prototype testing of two types of three-phase, argon stabilized reactor/furnace indicates specialized advantages for both, as compared with existing metallurgical furnace technology. They are: the direct-arc, plasma-torch furnace (Knipp); and the indirect, plasma extended-arc reactor (PEAR), developed at the University of Toronto.IntroductionA unique type of three-phase AC, plasma extended-arc reactor, (PEAR), shown in Figure la with gravity feed, has been undergoing development at the University of Toronto, during the past fifteen years: argon gas, introduced axially through drilled-holes in ordinary graphite electrodes, increases the length of indirect arcing and improves electrical stability while decreasing electrode consumption as compared with the performance of AC electric arc furnaces (EAF 's). Meanwhile and independently, a three-phase, transferred arc plasma furnace (Fig. 1b) has been developed by the Krupp Research Institute in Germany, using argon-stabilized, water- cooled plasma-torches with thoriated tungsten electrodes.Accordingly, the two types of furnace are similar as to both three phase and stabilized operation, but otherwise they differ in several respects, ranging from indirect versus direct-arcing to principal intended application and current state of practical development. Between them they raise questions: (I) of their present or fore seeable economics in comparison with existing processes they are intended to replace , (see Heinke and Neuschutz, 1986, for a review of the merit s of AC and DC plasma-torch furnaces); and (2) of the state of development and accessibility of their plasma theory-in-common."

"Niobium and tantalum are strategic metals for electronic and alloys industries. They are produced by pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy but most of the niobium and tantalum production processes are not environmentally friendly. For instance, in the hydrometallurgical route, niobium and tantalum separation can only be achieved by liquid-liquid extraction in the presence of hydrofluoric acid by taking advantage of the difference in niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in fluoride-based media. Therefore, the environmental footprint of hydrometallurgical processes for the production of niobium and tantalum could be clearly lowered by replacing HF or NH4F by greener media such as alkaline solutions in which high solubility of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) can be achieved.The development of such new efficient and environmentally friendly hydrometallurgical processes requires a fine description of the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in alkaline solutions. Unfortunately, literature data show a huge discrepancy on niobium(V) and tantalum(V) speciation in such media. This paper gives a brief overview of the niobium(V)-tantalum(V) production processes and paves the way to the development of alternative processes in alkaline media by presenting and discussing recent advances in the physicochemistry of niobium(V) and tantalum(V) in these media.INTRODUCTIONNiobium and tantalum are strategic metals since they are used for the production of alloys and super alloys, capacitors and magnets in strategic industries such as electronic, aeronautics and automobile. WE should indeed feel proud and satisfied with the accomplishments of our great mining and metallurgical. industries during the past quarter of a century, for they have vastly exceeded those of any previous period of like duration. 1 feel that Canadians, and particularly those in the mining industry, should know more concerning the important role our industry will be called upon to play in the present war. Our Empire metals will be an outstanding factor in this conflict. Every man connected with the industry, from the lowest paid labourer to the highest official, can feel proud that his every effort results in more and more production of those metals which will help to give the Empire supremacy. He can feel assured that, by sticking to his job and by putting his whole heart into his work, he is making a contribution towards winning the terrible struggle in which our Empire and our gallant French allies are engaged. These two great peoples will have ro bear the brunt of the task of ridding the world of the menace of those who would set up force. and might in the place of right and justice in the settlement of international affairs. As the present European crisis developed, it became evident that they, alone, would have to accept the challenge and fight the enemies of Democracy to ensure the survival of the small nations of Europe and, indeed, of the great democratic powers themselves. The acquisitive eye of the German leaders had looked far ahead and they had realized that the eastern European states, already reeming with population, were no solution to Germany's space problem; but they thought that these states could be gobbled up one by one, each in turn strengthening Germany's might until it could successfully challenge France and England. No glimmer of doubt dimmed their vision. The two great democracies once subdued, they could proceed to seize Canada and the United States. This clone, they would have an abundance of room to expand, as well as those resources-grain, timber, cotton, nickel, iron, lead, zinc, copper, gold, silver, sulphur, oil-which German statesmen have always coveted. Von Ribbentrop, von Alvensleben, Bernstorff, and many others have made exhaustive studies of our resources. German rulers had been told that the French would not fight and that the British could not. They knew of the rust on the British war machine. There was no cloud in the sky; their fond dream was at last robe fulfilled.

"Antimony in smelted copper anodes has been shown to cause problems in electrorefining including brittleness of starter sheets. In order to improve deposit properties, a study was conducted examining the effect of anode chemistry on cathode ductility and electrolyte chemistry. Two industrial anodes with different molar ratios of As/(Sb+Bi) were used in laboratory electrorefining experiments with commercial electrolyte, and the addition of commercial glue and Avitone. The ductility of 21-hr copper deposits was evaluated by a 180° bend test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and metallography were performed on unbent specimens to characterize the deposit structure. Increasing the anode As/(Sb+Bi) molar ratio from 0.54 to 3.8 resulted in an increase, on average, from four to eight bends to failure in cathode material produced. Significantly lower concentration of antimony (V) in the electrolyte was detected when operating with the higher molar ratio anode. The presence of (111) and (200) planes was noted in cathode material produced from the higher molar ratio anode suggesting that mixed growth character could be responsible for the observed increase in bend test results. The ductility of the starter sheet materials was improved by a higher anode molar ratio.INTRODUCTIONThe presence of antimony in copper electrorefining electrolyte has been reported to cause problems in cathode production (Hiskey, 2012; Peng, Zheng & Chen, 2012; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan & Lian-Sheng, 2006; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan, Wang, Xiao & Zhang, 2010; Wang, Chen, Zhou-Lan, Wang, Xiao & Tang, 2011; Wesstrom, 2014). To better understand the impact of antimony, laboratory scale electrorefining experiments were conducted using industrial inputs (anodes, cathodes and electrolyte). The influences of anode chemistry on the valences of antimony and arsenic in the electrolyte were monitored and correlated to physical cathode characteristics, such as a bend test to failure and crystallographic orientation.Commercially, starter sheets are produced by electrorefining impure cast copper anodes onto titanium blanks. The starter sheets are then hung in an electrorefining or electrowinning cell using loops of bent starter sheet material. These loops, in the absence of sufficient ductility, fail resulting in cathodes falling into the electrolysis cells. It is thought that the reduction in ductility can be related to anode composition; in particular, the molar ratio of arsenic to antimony plus bismuth As/(Sb+Bi). It has been stated that maintaining this ratio above 2:1 results in numerous improvements to electrorefining operations (Baltazar, Claessens & Thiriar, 1987; Kamath, Mitra, Radhakrishnan & Shetty, 2003; Krusmark, Young & Faro, 1995; Noguchi, Itoh & Nakamura, 1995; Wenzl, 2008)."

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Since the 1957 initiation of deposition of mill tailings at the Heath Steele mine, New Brunswick, periodic detailed studies of the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy have been conducted, thereby providing a unique opportunity to examine the geochemical evolution of a sulfide rich mine>tailings impoundment. When deposited, the tailings contained about 85 wt% sulfide minerals, 1 wt% to 3 wt% carbonate minerals, and 12 wt% to 14 wt% alumino silicate minerals. Mineralogical examination of samples of the tailings from deep in the impoundment indicates that little oxidation occurred prior to tailings deposition. The mill process-water deposited with the tailings was neutral to slightly basic and contained low concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As. Sampling of the tailings five years after deposition indicated that sulfide-oxidation reactions, occurring near the tailings surface, had decreased the tailings-water pH and increased the concentrations of Fe, S042-, Cu, Zn and Pb (up to 10 000 mglL, 25 000 mg/L, 2.5 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 4.5 mg/L, respectively). In 1975, ten years after decommissioning, the tailings could be divided into three zones: an upper oxidation zone in which sulfide oxidation is actively occurring, a hardpan layer, 15 cm to 20 cm thick, composed of tailings cemented by secondary Fe minerals, and an underlying reduction zone in which the tailings are relatively tin oxidized (Boorman and Watson, 1976). Chemical analyses indicated the presence of low-pH waters containing very high concentrations of SOi-, Fe, and other metals (up to 63 600 mg/L SO42-, 28 600 mg/L Fe, 10 mg/L Pb, 600 mg/L Cu and 4000 mg/L Zn), suggesting that there was a period of intense sulfide oxidation between five and ten years after tailings deposition. More recent sampling, conducted some 20 years after the end of tailings deposition, indicates that relatively little change has occurred in the last ten years, thereby suggesting that the hardpan layer has provided an impediment to the downward movement of dissolved constituents. Analyses of the tailings solids show increased accumulations of many metals at or near the depth of the hardpan layer. Evaluations of the long-term evolution of the tailings can be enhanced by comparison of descriptions of the tailings with descriptions of the gossan that overlay the massivesulfide orebody prior to mining. At Heath Steele, this comparison suggests that many of the mechanisms controlling the distribution of metals in the tailings will probably persist over geologic time.

THE material improvements which have been made in the practice of exploiting oil and gas reservoirs in the United States during recent years may be attributed largely to: (1) The necessity for drilling deeper wells at costs not much greater than was formerly expended on shallower wells. (2) The necessity for producing oil at a lower cost per barrel. (3) A growing recognition of the importance of the nature of production practice upon ultimate yield of oil and gas. The first two of these factors result, to a large extent, from the fact that a greater proportion of new development has been deeper development, and these wells have been drilled in the face of progressively lower per well allowables. In California, for instance, maximum allowables have declined from 400 barrels per day in March, 1938, to 156 barrels per day in September, 1940, and during this same period some 125 wells were drilled to the deeper 10,000-foot producing horizons discovered during this time. The third item listed above results from our increasing knowledge of the basic factors which influence the amount of recovery we may expect from reservoirs. In addition to the longer-range planning now being undertaken by the more prudent operators, State proration and conservation laws have focused attention upon the importance of methods conducive to obtaining progressively greater quantities of the hydrocarbons in place. In a paper of this length it will be possible to discuss only a few of the recent advances. An effort has been made to select the more important of these and to indicate, where possible, the factors which have made these advances possible.

"Since the advent of large volume flotation machines, Cominco Ltd. has actively studied possible application of such machines to their various milling operations. A number of installations have been made and more are on the drawing board. This paper gives a description of these units, information as to choice of equipment, and information as to operating experience. Mechanical and operating details of six installations are summarized. Three different types of machines are discussed.Pine PointThe original Pine Point zinc flotation circuit comprised conventional roughing with two stages of cleaning. Over the years with increase in feed tonnage there have developed two adverse conditions; namely, a reduction in zinc concentrate grade coupled with an increase in MgO in the concentrate. This resulted in higher freight payments along with more severe smelter penalties. An intensive test program, in 1971, showed that the concentrate grade could be raised by 1.5 units of zinc along with a reduction in MgO from 0.8% to 0.47.. Subsequently this was done by adding two additional stages of cleaning using 16 cells of Denver 200-V's. The project was completed in January 1973 at a cost of $510,000 to give an estimated annual savings of about $390,000.Selection of the Denver Model 200-V was based on minimum floor space requirement, availability, and favourable operational and maintenance experience with Denver 100’s. As it happens it was possible to ""shoe-horn"" the 16 cells into place with a minimum of plant alteration. Some problems have been encountered with a tendency to ""sand up"" at high pH, particularly at the corners. Otherwise operational service has been very good."

THE concentration of tin in the tailing from Sullivan ore has been de-scribed by H. R. Banks, superintendent of the Sullivan concentrator, in a paper presented at the annual meeting of the B.C. Division of the Institute in October, 1941(1). The reduction of the concentrate EARLY EXPERIMENTAL WORK Experimental work on the smelting of Sullivan tin concentrate was done in Trail. Preliminary tests in the laboratory indicated that the concentrate could be successfully treated in an electric furnace. A small electro-thermic pilot plant was built and, at the same time, reduction tests were made in an oil-fired reverberatory furnace. Both types of treatment gave satisfactory results. It developed that no fluxes, other than those already in the ore and in the ash of the reducing agent (either coke or coal), were needed. By using an excess of iron, a complete recovery of the tin in the slag was obtained, but with 20 to 30 per cent iron in the tin. A counter-current treatment was thus indicated, viz., the primary slag was first treated with hard-head (iron-tin alloy) from the refining and final slag smelting, producing tin with 2 to 4 per cent Fe. This secondary slag was subsequently treated with scrap iron to produce tin-iron alloy, and a final slag low enough in tin to waste. By following this line of endeavour, a tentative flow-sheet was drawn up and a successful operation was established. Without resorting to electrolytic refining, a metal comparable in purity to standard tin was produced. Metallurgical results and operating costs were found to be very similar with an electric furnace or a fuel-fired furnace. 'However, electric furnace smelting was chosen because the furnace required was smaller, and because some doubt existed as to the cleaning of the final slag in the reverberatory furnace reduction.

All segments of the economy will be affected one way or another by the far-reaching budget proposals; the mining industry did not escape untouched.Important changes will be introduced which will alter some of the fundamentals of structuring mineral resource ventures in Canada. This month, Tax Notes examines these changes, and also summarizes the other highlights of this key federal budget.IntroductionFinance Minister MacEachen's budget, with its lower personal tax rates, loophole plugging and tax shelter bashing, represents the biggest shakeup in our tax system since tax reform in 1971. In his budget, presented in the House of Commons on November 12, Mr. MacEachen proposed substantially lower tax rates for middle and upper income individuals, with the top federal and provincial tax rate dropping to about 50%, but in return he eliminated most of the opportunities for individuals, and corporations, to reduce or defer taxes through a wide variety of tax shelter and tax planning mechanisms.Although many of those budget proposals that dealt with the resource industries focused on the implementation of the September 1, 1981 agreement reached by the federal and Alberta governments concerning the National Energy Program (see Tax Notes in the December 1981 issue of the Bulletin), the budget also contained some proposed amendments that would have significant implications for investment in the mining industry.This month, Tax Notes examines these latter proposals, and also summarizes very briefly those budget proposals which are not unique to the resource sector."

"The Rexspar uranium deposits are located near Birch Island in central British Columbia. The property lies within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Cordilleran Orogen. Gneiss, schist, tuffaceous and porphyritic trachyte are the main rock types encountered on the property. These rocks are of pre-Late Triassic or probable Mississippian age.Lenticular bodies of mica and pyrite-rich rock are the host of three closely spaced uranium deposits and are found close to a fluorite deposit. The altered trachytic rock as well as the fluorite and uranium deposits are found in the upper part of the trachyte unit. The latest tonnage estimates are 1,441,820 tonnes averaging 23.46% CaF, for the fluorite deposit, 490,966 tonnes of 0.084% U10afor the 'W' deposit, 164,290 tonnes of 0.074% UP8 for the ""B"" deposit and 459,124 tonnes of 0. 071 o/o UP8 for the ""BD"" deposit.A hydrothermal replacement origin was first proposed for the fluorite and uranium deposits. The mineralizing and altering solutions would have been genetically related to a felsic batholith outcropping a few kilometres south of the property. Another hypothesis has been proposed more recently. A volcanic centre has been tentatively identified in the upper part of the trachyte unit, close to the mineral deposits. The fluorite and uranium deposits could possibly be volcanogenic, rather than related to the Cretaceous felsic batholith.IntroductionFluorite and uranium mineralization occur on the property of Consolidated Rexspar Minerals and Chemicals Ltd. in central British Columbia. The exploration and development works executed over the years are summarized in this paper. The deposits and their geological environment are described but the origin of the mineralization has not been definitely established."

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting commenced production at the No. 12orebody, a lead/zinc/copper/silver deposit, situated some seventeen miles southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick, in 1964 at 4100 tonnes per day. Today it operates at 10500 tonnes per day.Brunswick has utilized underground incentives since commencement of operations. Early incentive systems were “off the wall"" based on those in effect at other properties then manipulated to fit, often hack calculated from actual performances to tm1ve at the desired result. If subsequent payouts were considered too high the rates were simply reduced, often retroactively. A large amount of this was' subjective and depended to a large extent on whoever was handling the bonus, in conjunction with senior mine department staff.In 1971, it was' decided that a more scientific approach was needed, particularly with the introduction of the new cut-and-fill mining. After some research, a system based on Work Study was selected. Another major mining company employing such a system loaned one of their experienced employees to train some Brunswick personnel in the art of Work Study and conversion of data to incentive rates, and in 1972, the first such developed incentive rate was-introduced.Along the way, borrowing from others where necessary, a set of Brunswick principles and parameters were developed. While refined to some extent, these remain basically the same today.Improvements in methods and equipment have resulted in improved performance and reduced costs. The use of underground incentives has played an important role in this. A/though individual bonus earnings have steadily increased, bonus cost per tonne has remained nearly constant - in real dollars, it has regularly decreased. These are two of the main parameters of a successful system."

IN July, 1937, Asbestos Corporation, Limited, installed an automatic conveyor-belt scale at their King mine, Thetford Mines. The equipment was purchased 'on trial' and its performance has proved entirely satisfactory to the staff. The scale was manufactured by the Toledo Scale Company, of Toledo (Ohio) and Windsor (Ont.) and was installed by one of the Scale Company's engineers. The electrical recording equipment was installed by Keith Mercer, Reg'd, of Montreal, Canadian agents for the manufacturers, the Builders Iron Foundry, of Providence, Rhode Island. The recording equipment consists of a duplex weight-transmitter attached to the scale-head, a duplex totalizer with differential relays, a belt-speed compensator, a rate-of-delivery recorder, and a rate-of-delivery indicator. As it was desired to run the mill at maximum capacity, it was necessary to know the rate of feed at all times, so that any lessening of rate of feed or delays would be recorded and could be corrected. After having determined the rate of feed to the mill (100 per cent capacity), it was required to have weighing and recording instruments which would show: (1) The rate of feed per hour. (2) Any variations .in the load. (3) Any delays and the duration and time of the delays. Rate of tonnage recorders in the mill superintendent's office and at the point of feedi.ng were necessary, as was automatic control between the mill superintendent and the feed man. It was desired to have a permanent record of total tonnage fed per shift or day; weighing and recording mechanism had to have sensitivity to record all previously mentioned conditions. Mechanism had to be of rugged construction, and be so built that it would stay in good operating condition, with the minimum amount of adjustment and supervision.

Prior work on effects of lamellar orientation on creep rates and other mechanical properties have shown that having lamellae parallel to the tensile axis provides optimal creep resistance and good strength. Consequently, a directional solidification system was used to examine the effect of solidification rate on the development of crystals with lamellae parallel to the growth direction. The nominal chemical composition of TiAl ingots was Ti-46A1-2Mo-2Nb (at%) and the ingots were 20 mm in diameter and 180 mm long. The master alloy bars were placed in a high purity yttria mold on a copper chill plate and raised into the hot zone of a Bridgman furnace. The alloys were melted and then directionally solidified at withdrawal rates of 4, 8, and 12 mm/min. As-cast specimens were sectioned at positions of 4, 22, 66, 111, and 155 mm from the bottom of the ingot to evaluate microstructure and crystallographic texture as a function of distance from the bottom of the ingot. The directionally solidified microstructure consists of continuous columnar grains with fully lamellar structure, a network morphology of primary 13, yttria particles, and interlocked columnar boundaries. For all three ingots, the texture at 4 mm shows many peaks, with isolated strong peaks, and a slight tendency toward <111> plane normals within about 20° of the cylindrical axis. At 155 mm, all specimens showed substantially stronger clustering of <111> orientations near the cylinder axis, with the strongest clustering of poles occurring for the 8 and 12 mm/min specimens. Analysis of diffraction peaks indicates that strongly compressive residual stresses in the radial direction are present in the casting. "The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. developed a guide of minimum standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves for the purpose of informing the general public. The SME Guide has been adopted by the Society.History1. In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Inc., the President of SME formed Working Party #79, Ore Reserve Definition, with the mission to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration results, resources, and reserves. A Subcommittee was appointed by the Working Party to draft these guidelines and submit recommendations to SME. The Subcommittee's recommendations were published by SME in the April 1991 issue of ""Mining Engineering"", and as a document entitled ""A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves"" (the SME Guide) in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996, when Working Party #79 was renamed the SME Resources and Reserves Committee and became a standing committee.In 1994, the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) started a concerted international effort to create a set of international definitions for reporting mineral resources and mineral reserves. An ad-hoc International Definitions Group was formed, with representatives from mining and metallurgical institutions from the United States (SME), Australia (AusIMM), Canada (CIM), the United Kingdom (IMM) and South Africa (SAIMM). A major breakthrough came on October 18, 1997 when the CMMI International Definitions Group met in Denver, Colorado and reached a provisional agreement (the Denver Accord) on definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Concurrently, and since 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) was developing an international framework classification for mineral resources and mineral reserves. Starting in October 1998, joint meetings were held in Geneva between the CMMI International Definitions Group and the UN-ECE Task Force, resulting in agreement to incorporate the CMMI definitions into the UN framework classification."

"Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized. These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. In this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dissolving huge cavities in the evaporites. The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds. In at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation.Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore wne, and drops in topography > 10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies. Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

"In the early 1930s during the course of test work with a simple gold ore, it was evident that the time required to dissolve the gold by cyanidation was very much longer than should have been needed theoretically for the maximum size gold particles in the ore, A similar conclusion appeared to be valid for other gold ores. In a cyanidation system there are many factors which can influence the dissolution rate of gold, and a decision was made to investigate the more obvious variables, because a literature survey at the time showed that with the exception of the work of Yamazarki on the dissolution of silver in cyanide solution, virtually no attention had been given to this subject, Our work was not reported because the intention was to do this on completion of the Study, but owing to the demands on the Section's personnel for other work the investigation was never completed. Although other investigators have since studied the problem, the methods which we adopted and some of the conclusions may be of interest to metallurgists concerned with gold ore treatment.Form of GoldExperiments with gold ores were not possible because of the number of uncontrollable variables present in a gold ore-cyanidation system, therefore pure metal and reagents were used. Initially some experiments were carried out with gold leaf, but it was soon apparent that metal in this form was unsuitable because the uneven thickness of the leaf caused it to break up into pieces and. there was difficulty in determining precisely when complete dissolution had taken place, Numerous factors both expected and unexpected were found to influence considerably the results and much experimental work was necessary to establish the procedures which were finally adopted, Experiments were carried out with gold in the form of foil, wire, rings and sols. Finally, gold foil in the form of cylinders was adopted for most of the experiments although some work with gold in the sol form was included in the programme. Also some experin1ents were carried out with a gold ore to see if effects which were obtained with sodium chloride on gold sols were applicable to gold ores."

Load Haul Dump vehicles (LHD) are extensively used in underground mining however equipment design and operating conditions contribute to restricted operator?s visibility. The inability to clearly see people, objects or hazards around the machine has contributed to a number of accidents including fatal injuries. In order to identify vehicle design characteristics resulting in restricted and blocked sightlines visibility assessments are traditionally completed in the field. However, field methods are unable to evaluate visibility under dynamic operating conditions and are limited in their ability to provide feedback on the impact of various operator characteristics such as sitting height, for example. Results of this research show computer simulation and virtual reality can be successfully used to evaluate visibility during the operation of LHD vehicles. In order to benefit from virtual reality applications the work environment, LHD vehicle and human posture need to be represented as accurately as possible. A computer simulation program with ergonomic ana lysis features, Classic JACK 3.1, was successfully used. Threedimensional CAD models of LHD vehicles were developed from manufacturer specifications and pictur es taken from LHD vehicles currently in use. The LHD models were imported into the JACK environment, a digital human was positioned in the cab of the LHD vehicle and the vehicle and human where driven over a typical mine route. Real-time feedback in the JACK program was used to identify what the operator could see under different operating conditions. Machine characteristics and operating scenarios resulting in impaired visibility were successfully identified with this method. The JACK program can also provide real-time feedback on the human?s joint forces and torques, strength requirements, postural comfort, and metabolic energy expenditure. As a result, this method could be used to successfully evaluate musculoskeletal injury risk factors along with system design recommendations to improve workplace safety and productivity in any setting. The LHD VRML files imported into JACK have also been combined with environment files into other VR software packages (e.g. Maverik) to view in a VRL facility, managed by MIRARCO at Laurentian University. The VR models using these packages can be viewed in stereo to provide better appreciation of spatial visibility issues.

During the last few years, low cement castable refractories found more application in industry, because of good low and high temperature mechanical properties.In the case of alumina based castables ,usually fume silica or reactive alumina are used as superfines in the matrix to form mullite at high temperature which depends to source of alumina . Mullite network formation improves the hot mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of bodies. The mullitisation of andalusite (so called primary mullite) also produces a certain amount of rich silica glass, part of it being expelled out of the grain. This phenomenon restrict the application of andalusite low cement castable in pig iron ladle. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time and undischarged pig iron are the main ones.Therefore monolithic refractories such as castables which increase thermal shock resistance could be substituted. Regarding to ternary phase diagram of Al2O3-SiO2-CaO ,fumed silica was selected as fine particle.After optimization of particle size distribution by using of modified andreasen equation and rehological properties ,different mixture were composed with andalusite ,fume silica, reactive alumina,secar 71 ,SiC and kyanite.All aggregates system components were mixed dry for 1 min in hobart mixer .After water addition wet mixing was continued until getting flowing about 4 min.The ready mixes were poured in the moulds of of 25mm X 25mm X 140mm with vibrations .After demoulding the samples were cured for 24 hrs and dried at 110OC/18hrsand then fired at 1100-1500OC. Physical ,mechanical ,phase analysis(XRD) and microstructure studies (SEM)were carried out according to ASTM standards. Results showed that by addition of kyanite ,more mullite phase formed through the matrix but,because of expansion occured during this phase transformoration, some cracks formed and mechanical properties decreased.By SiC addition the silica film on the surface of SiC lead to improvement of mechanical properties at high temperature
