An alternative method for dewatering slurry (tailings) is the use of geocontainers (MacTubes). The practical application of this work was carried out in the concentrator plant of the Raura Mining Company, located in the occidental mountain between Huánuco and Lima in Peru?s central highland. For the development of the research, the MATLAB R2012a software MGeST (v. 1.0) was used (Slurry Geocontainer Maccaferri Treatment). MGeST is used for sizing MacTubes, which allows determination of the most important design parameters, such as height (H), filling residual pressure (P1O ), strength of geosynthetic (T), and dehydration height. Compared with GeoCoPS v. 3.0, there is a maximum difference of 3% between the results obtained. The tailing to be treated in the MacTube have a specific weight of 11.62 kN/m3. After several tests it was determined that a MacTube of an apparent opening size of 0.22 mm was required for this specific weight.

The Flash Smelting process is the most used production method for primary copper in the world. The basic idea of the Flash Smelting is to utilize the thermal value of sulfidic concentrates and melt the reaction product, in controlled conditions, without a need for external energy. This basic principle is utilized both in matte smelting and in Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting Processes. In this paper, the behavior of normal (CuFeS2) concentrate of FSF-process is compared to the behavior of high grade feed material produced by Outokumpu Concentrate Upgrade Process with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CPD) simulation using add-in subroutines developed by Outokumpu Technology. Results consist of the information concerning the behavior of the suspension, reaction efficiency and other parameters concerning the reactions of the feed material. It will be shown that, using the Upgrade Process, the throughput of copper from the Flash Furnace can be almost tripled.

"Data handling is an important step in the development of a simulator of a mineral processing circuit. The model requires representative data of the scenario to be modeled. The model development involves protocols that must be followed very closely to complete a successful project.Data handling of large and diverse datasets (metallurgical test results, geological data, mining models, historical data, etc.) is a key element of the model. The information needs to be processed, reconciled, interpreted, modeled and presented to support the design or the optimization of a mineral processing plant.Best practice recommends that teams from different disciplines (such as mining, metallurgy, geology and environmental) interact to define the most important variables that could influence the simulator. For example by adopting a geometallurgical approach in the earlier stages of the project, it is possible to consolidate the number of main ore rock types in a testwork program (saving money and time) by involving geologists and metallurgists in the sample selection and data interpretation.Planning the development of a model involves an understanding of the software capabilities but also the limitations and the magnitude of the data required to calibrate the model in case of changes in the project.A successful model requires a deep understanding of the circuit to be modeled and thus plant personnel should be considered as members of the team.This paper describes the use of the "state of the art" tools for data analysis, simulation and optimization; and shows three practical examples of the use those tools in the design of mineral processing plants."

It is the purpose of this paper to present an initial report on the construction and operation of the Fluo-Solid roaster at the property of Campbell Red Lake Mines, Ltd., Balmertown, Ontario. The roaster prepares for subsequent cyanidation the bulk flotation concentrate obtained from four hundred tons per day of gold ore. The mill flow-sheet 'includes jigging and amalgamation; flotation; cyanidation of flotation tailing; and roasting followed by cyanidaition of flotation concentrate plus amalgamation tailing. Overall mill recovery for the year 1950 was 90.2 per cent. Recovery possible by straight cyanidation of this ore would not exceed 80 per cent. The ore contains considerable arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as well as pyrite, with lesser quantities of nickel, zinc, and copper minerals. The mineralization is for the most part extremely fine. The roaster first went into operation on August 7th, 1949, and at the end of 1950 it had roasted 10,916 tons of concentrate. The average recovery of gold from calcine during that period was 94.86 per cent in the primary stage of calcine cyanidation. The average assay of calcine residue from primary cyanidation for the entire period was 0.37 oz. per ton. Both laboratory tests and plant metallurgical balance calculations indicate a further recovery of approximately 10 per cent of this 0.37 oz. when the calcine residue is again cyanided, in the flotation tailing cyanidation circuit.

Since the discovery by conventional prospecting of the Horne deposit in 1920, the Noranda area has produced 82 million tons of copper-zinc-gold-silver ore from sixteen massive sulphide bodies. Recent exploration in the area has consisted of systematic studies employing geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Due to the depth of the deposits being sought, surface geo-physical surveys are limited in their effectiveness as DIRECT indicators. However, because of the geological environment, surface geophysical methods, and the Induced Polarization method in particular, can be success-fully employed as INDIRECT indicators of ore deposits. Examples of survey results from various properties in the Noranda area illustrate the advantages and limitations of the Induced Polarization method as an exploration tool in this area.

The rapid expansion of exploration drilling with anticipated production facilities for oil and gas in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories has created a demand for granular construction materials. This paper discusses the technique adopted and experience gained by the authors from several major resource evaluation programs in this remote area. The first part of the paper describes a methodology for deposit identification, logistics of helicopter and ground-based drilling operations and the sampling difficulties which are unique to permafrost: soils. The second part describes the exploitation of a large glaciofluvial deposit at YaYa Lake on Richards Island. Granular construction material is sparse in the delta region relative to projected demand. Exploitable sources of granular materials for aggregates or construction borrow are found in glaciofluvial deposits of Pleistocene age or in outcrops of Paleozoic bedrock. Glaciofluvial landforms can be located by reference to published surficial geology maps coupled with airphoto interpretation. Preliminary assessment of these features in a large region is most economically carried out during the summer months with a drill that is transportable by helicopter. Once prospective borrow pit sites are identified, a detailed ground-based winter drilling program must be undertaken to establish aggregate quality and quantity, and to provide information on natural features which could affect development. The glaciofluvial terrain has been highly modified by the formation of massive ground ice within the gravel deposits. This presents some unique pit development problems which are not encountered in a normal bedrock quarry operation.

ANY attempt to forecast the mineral resources of a largely unknown region is hazardous and, in the case of the Northwest Territories, such a task is even more hazardous than usual. This is not merely because of the immense territory involved (over a million and a quarter square miles), only a small fraction of which has ever been explored or prospected, but also be-cause both the geology and mineral deposits thus far examined show many unique features, and, finally, because the region is being actively prospected at the present time. However, in view of the present widespread interest in Canada's mineral resources, a brief compilation of what is known regarding mineral occurrences and geology in the explored parts of the far north seems timely. From these assembled data, a few inferences are warranted as to future mineral production from this region. HISTORY The story of mineral discovery in the Canadian northwest is a fascinating one. As well, it abundantly illustrates the importance of mineral occurrences in indicating future mining possibilities. The same sequence of events has repeated itself too often to be merely fortuitous.? In most cases, the dis-covery of a mineral deposit of possible economic value has been foreshadowed by the finding of the valuable mineral or an associated mineral in the same district, generally in small quantity, by an early explorer or traveller. Thus, John Franklin reported oil seepages from the base of Bear Rock, near Nor-man, at almost the very spot where oil was struck nearly one hundred years later. Again, some would-be Klondikers, deterred by the hardships of the route, remained to prospect around Great Slave lake, and were the first to report the Pine Point lead-zinc occurrences there and the gold-bearing veins on Yellowknife bay. Sporadic prospecting followed at the latter locality for over thirty years before the recent rich strikes were made. Similarly, in 1847, Dr. John Rae picked up a boulder of copper ore south of Rankin inlet, on Hudson bay. More than eighty years later, a body of copper-nickel sulphides carrying values in platinum metals was found at this locality. Also, the report of cobalt bloom on the east coast of Great Bear lake brought back by a Geological Survey of Canada party in 1900 was a factor in the events leading to the discovery of silver and radium there in 1930.

"Calcium ferrite slags are currently used in a number of copper-converting processes. Despite the industrial importance of this system the phase equilibria have not been fully investigated. Characterization of this slag system is necessary to improve the control of process parameters, including fluxing and operating temperatures. Recently, a modified experimental method has been developed; this involves rapid quenching of slag samples equilibrated at high temperatures with the resulting phase assemblages analysed using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). In the present study, experiments were completed under controlled temperatures and oxygen partial pressures using CO/C02 or H2/C02 gas mixtures. The investigated slags were supported during equilibration by a substrate of the primary phase. This technique removes the limitations arising from the use of crucibles and facilitates rapid quenching of the melt. Experiments were carried out at 1200°C and 1250°C (1473 Kand 1523 K) and in the composition range 0-40 wt.% Cu20, 0-25 wt. % CaO and 45-80 wt. % Fe203. Liquidus and solidus data are reported for the primary phase field of spinel between the oxygen partial pressures of 10-4.5 to 1 o- 6-5 atm. The analyzed compositions of liquids and solids are used to construct the phase diagram of ""Cu20"" -CaO-""F ez03"" system in equilibrium with metallic copper at fixed oxygen partial pressures."

"Discrete-element method (DEM) modelling is a powerful tool for studying particulate systems within the mineral processing industry. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the power draw, load behaviour, and impact energy profile of an experimental ball mill under different milling conditions. The variables considered were mill rotational speed (percent critical speed), ball size, and lifter face angle. The simulation results indicated that the grinding efficiency would be enhanced by using 80% critical speed, 30 mm ball diameter, and 45° lifter face angle. These findings can be useful in guiding actual ball milling tests involving an ore sample.RÉSUMÉ La modélisation par méthode des éléments distincts (MED) est un outil puissant qui permet d’étudier les systèmes particulaires au sein de l’industrie de traitement des minerais. Des simulations par MED ont été menées de façon à étudier le profil de la consommation énergétique, du comportement de la charge et de l’énergie de rupture d’un broyeur à boulets expérimental dans diverses conditions de broyage. Parmi les variables prises en compte figuraient la vitesse de rotation du broyeur (vitesse critique en pourcentage), la taille des boulets et l’angle de coupe de la cornière élévatrice. D’après les résultats de la simulation, on pourrait améliorer l’efficacité de broyage en utilisant une vitesse critique de 80 %, un diamètre de boulet de 30 mm et un angle de coupe de 45 ° de la cornière élévatrice. Ces résultats peuvent se révéler utiles pour les essais concrets de broyage à boulets impliquant un échantillon de minerai."

Site inspection is an important component of safety management system. In current practices, the inspectors evaluate the safety condition on a construction site with the assistance of a standardised checklist. However, the checklist emphasizes on evaluating the implementation of safety management system, but provides limited task-specific check items for assessing whether the individual construction tasks are conducted under safe condition and in a safe manner. To address this issue, the research presented in this paper aims to provide safety practitioners with comprehensive and taskspecific safety information to promote effective risk identification and facilitate strategic risk control during site inspection. Specifically, this research first builds a project-specific safety information database, which stores potential risks and control measures for each construction task. The research team then develops a mobile decision support tool to retrieve information from the database and support safer decision-making on site. The tool supports users in two ways: one is to provide daily risk checklists and risk control strategies to guide step-by-step inspection alongside the project schedule; the other is to let users input any safety-related keywords during the safety inspection process and the tool returns relevant safety information by applying text mining algorithms. It is ongoing research. This paper presents an overall research framework and discusses the progress in developing safety database and data retrieval concepts. The outcome of the project will help enhance safety management practices and reduce possible risky working conditions on a construction site.

The use of dewatered mine tailings as backfill material (commonly referred to as ‘paste’ backfill), is the most practiced form of backfill in Canada providing significant environmental benefits by reducing the size of external tailings facilities and improved economics through enhanced resource recovery. Paste backfill operations reuse filtered mine tailings with a cementitious binder and water to create a slurry that is hydraulically transported to refill underground stopes, later forming a structural network of cemented tailings in the mine stopes. Unlike typical structural applications that utilize General Use (GU) Portland cement; modern paste backfill operations maximize strength performance by blending Portland cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) or other supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). GGBFS and other SCMs offer key performance benefits and carbon reductions; however, the availability of these SCMs is rapidly dwindling in today’s carbon-constrained economy. This paper examines the development of an alternative binder system that provides similar performance and carbon reduction to that of GGBFS for mine backfill operations. The binder utilizes the chemical reaction between a reactive source of aluminosilicates and available calcium from calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide to replace between 50 to 100% of GGBFS. The performance of the binder is examined with insights into the hydration mechanisms that generate mechanical strength in the cemented paste network. Paste backfill slurries require precise engineering to create a material that maintains flowability during pipeline transport and generates enough strength to meet operational targets once placed in the stopes. Engineering of such slurries requires large amounts of water to be added to the binder-tailings matrix, far exceeding the typical water to binder ratios used in concrete mix designs. This characteristic of paste backfill warrants great emphasis on understanding the hydration mechanisms of the binder used in the paste backfill system. GU cement is typically composed of 50-70% tricalcium silicate and 15-30% dicalcium silicate.  The hydration mechanisms of these compounds consume 4 to 6 units of water to mineralize into calcium silicate hydrate cemented phases that result in compressive strength development. Cementitious aluminate and aluminosilicate phases make up 5-20% of GU cement and aid in secondary performance characteristics such as set time. Certain calcium aluminate hydrate phases such as monocarboaluminate and ettringite mineralize 10 to 32 units of water into their crystalline structure. Hydration products such as ettringite are traditionally avoided in construction applications due to their propensity for volumetric expansion after cement setting, leading to micro-fissures and subsequent strength degradation (known as ‘sulfate attack’). This paper proposes that such hydration products benefit the strength development in paste backfill slurries with the aforementioned characteristics due to their greater potential to mineralize free water. The newly developed calcium aluminosilicate binder is designed to replace 50-100% GGBFS or other SCMs used in paste backfill systems and meet operational strength requirements by providing exceptional hydration characteristics through cementitious reactions. Additionally, the aluminosilicates used have a minimal carbon footprint and a secure supply outlook, thereby allowing mine operators access to a low-carbon binder option throughout the mine’s lifespan.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

"The paper describes the CDN$400 million expansion at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited’s operations. The company has continuously produced copper and zinc at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant since 1930. The paper details the company’s operational turnaround since 1995 and “The 777 Project” which includes two new mines, expansion and modification of the concentrators, expansion of the zinc pressure leach plant, a new zinc electrolytic cellhouse and modifications to the copper smelter gas handling system to reduce ground level gas emissions. IntroductionHudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited (HBMS) was incorporated in 1927 to mine and process the world-class Flin Flon copper and zinc orebody. Ore concentration and metallurgical facilities were constructed in Flin Flon. The metallurgical complex capability is currently 89 000 tonnes of copper metal and 98 000 tonnes of zinc metal from both HBMS and purchased concentrates.Flin Flon, with a population of 7000, is in Manitoba and partly in the province of Saskatchewan. The location is isolated with Winnipeg 800 km to the south and Saskatoon 500 km southwest.Today, three underground mines feed the Flin Flon concentrator, one feeds the Ruttan concentrator at Leaf Rapids, 200 km to the north of Flin Flon, and Chisel North mine feeds the Snow Lake concentrator (Fig. 1).The Flin Flon volcanic massive sulphide proximal and distal orebodies are within the Flin Flon greenstone belt which stretches from the west of Flin Flon to the east of Snow Lake, a distance of 250 km. The belt is approximately 100 km wide before disappearing below the paleozoic cover to the south."

IN this paper we shall examine the Why, Where and How concerning the agglomeration of iron ores and concentrates. Fig. l answers the questions @f why there is so much interest at the present time in the art of agglomeration. The use of sinter or pellets in the blast furnace has materially increased their rated •capacity. ':'President Hains Company Ltd. Engineering J. S. McMahon ( 1) reports an increase from 653 tons of .pig iron per day to 1140 tons of pig iron per day with the use of a 100 per cent sinter burden on one of his blast furnaces. In the United States the use of 100 per cent pellets has increased pig iron production from approximately 1800 tons per day to over 3000 tons pig iron per day (2). Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

In civil engineering, geophysics solves specific problems; as for example, what is the depth to bed-rock along the axis of a proposed dam? The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. The geophysical tools employed in the three fields are, however, quite similar; the differences are mainly in the objectives.The Natural Geophysical ExplorationThe terms geophysics and geophysical exploration have been used heretofore and will .be employed in what follows. The question is, therefore, What is geophysical exploration?Geophysical exploration is a line of field work where measurements are made at the ground surface with special instruments to get geological subsurface information. Briefly stated, geophysics is a form of exploration that supplements geological work. It is a blend of physics and geology since physical measurements are made •at the surface of the ground that can be interpreted in terms of subsurface conditions."
